The service, managed through partnerships like as the MVNE, caters to budget-conscious users by bundling affordable smartphones and SIM options for hotspots and home , contributing to its popularity as an accessible entry into mobile connectivity.

History

Origins and Launch in Germany

Aldi Talk, also known as MEDIONmobile, originated as an extension of the supermarket chain's discount model into the sector, aiming to provide low-cost prepaid mobile services without long-term contracts to leverage its widespread retail footprint in . The service was developed in partnership with , utilizing that carrier's network infrastructure, with acting as the mobile virtual network enabler (MVNE) to handle technical operations. This move reflected Aldi's strategy of entering adjacent markets with simplified, no-frills offerings to attract price-sensitive consumers already shopping at its stores. The service launched on 7 December 2005, with introducing ALDI TALK as a prepaid mobile . Starter sets containing SIM cards were made available exclusively through Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd stores, priced affordably to emphasize the discounter's in mobile communications. The initial tariffs focused on basic voice and services without contracts, aligning with the prepaid market's growth in at the time. Following the debut, ALDI TALK was integrated into Aldi's ongoing product assortments, with starter sets resuming availability from February 1, 2006, for Nord and February 2 for Süd, marking a permanent expansion. This quick follow-up ensured sustained distribution and helped establish the amid from other discounter-backed MVNOs. The service's early success stemmed from its seamless retail integration, allowing customers to purchase and top up credits alongside groceries.

Expansion and Growth

Aldi Talk experienced significant growth following its launch, leveraging Aldi's extensive retail network of over 4,000 stores in for distribution and tariff sales, which facilitated rapid customer acquisition among price-sensitive consumers seeking affordable prepaid mobile services. By 2018, industry estimates placed its customer base at 6 to 8 million, establishing it as a leading independent prepaid provider in a market dominated by discounter MVNOs. The provider's expansion was supported by its MVNO partnership with Deutschland (operating as O2), initially via the network acquired in 2014, allowing access to nationwide coverage and subsequent upgrades to LTE and infrastructure without owning or towers. This enabled service enhancements, including higher data allowances and roaming, contributing to sustained and . Online sales through alditalk.de further accelerated, with e-commerce revenue reaching approximately $81.3 million in 2024, reflecting a 10-20% year-over-year increase driven by digital activations and app-based management tools. By April 2025, Aldi Talk's active customer numbers exceeded 8 million, underscoring its position as one of Germany's largest prepaid operators amid a competitive landscape where MVNOs captured significant prepaid market segments. A key milestone in diversification occurred in early 2025, when introduced contract tariffs through Aldi Talk for the first time, targeting a broader demographic beyond prepaid users and comprising a single-digit of O2's overall 40 million customer base. This move, combined with persistent low-price strategies, positioned Aldi Talk for projected revenue growth of 20-50% in 2025.

Recent Developments

In 2024, ALDI TALK reintroduced its annual packages (Jahres-Pakete) from November 14 to December 31, offering up to 50 GB more data volume at the same prices starting from €69.99 for 365 days of all-net , flat, and data including EU roaming. From early June 2025, the provider launched upgraded annual tariffs with expanded data options up to 350 GB (including access), transitioning from limited-time availability to more permanent marketing to enhance long-term . The Kombi packages were also revised, with the entry-level S variant increasing from 4 GB to 6 GB of high-speed data for €8.99 over four weeks, alongside all-net calling and , to better compete in the prepaid segment. ALDI TALK maintains its MVNO partnership with the O2 network (), where rollout continues to expand in 2025, though coverage lags slightly behind leading operators in some rural areas.

Business Model

MVNO Structure and Partnerships

Aldi Talk functions as a (MVNO), reselling mobile services through wholesale agreements with host mobile network operators (MNOs) without owning , cell towers, or core transmission . This structure allows Aldi to leverage its discount retail model for low-cost prepaid offerings, focusing on customer acquisition via in-store distribution and competitive pricing rather than network investment. In Germany, its primary market, Aldi Talk operates through a cooperation between ALDI Nord, ALDI Süd, MEDION AG, and Telefónica Germany. ALDI Nord and ALDI Süd serve as exclusive retail and distribution partners, providing starter sets and recharge vouchers in their stores. MEDION AG functions as the mobile virtual network enabler (MVNE), acting as the contractual partner for customers (originally under the name MEDIONmobile), and managing customer service, logistics, and the online portal. Telefónica Germany supplies the network infrastructure, using the O2 network (formerly incorporating the E-Plus network following its acquisition by Telefónica in 2014) for voice, data, and services; the long-term partnership dates back to the brand's 2005 launch. Services are integrated with O2's , /LTE, and capabilities. Internationally, Aldi employs similar MVNO models tailored to local partners. In , operating as Aldi Suisse Mobile since 2010, it collaborates with Sunrise Communications for network access, emphasizing prepaid subscriptions without contracts. In , branded as ALDImobile and launched in 2009, it uses Telstra's wholesale network under an MVNO agreement, providing and partial coverage to approximately 97% of the population via Telstra's 850 MHz sites. These partnerships enable Aldi brands to prioritize , such as simplified billing and retail bundling, over development, though they may face constraints in network prioritization during congestion compared to the host MNO's direct customers.

Pricing Strategy and Tariffs

Aldi Talk employs a discount-oriented strategy characteristic of its company's no-frills retail model, focusing on prepaid tariffs with transparent, low monthly equivalents, no contracts, and minimal administrative fees to target price-sensitive customers seeking flexibility over bundled services. As a light MVNO reselling access on the (O2) network, it leverages from Aldi's distribution channels and digital self-service tools to maintain slim margins while offering higher allowances than many competitors. This strategy prioritizes volume-driven growth through aggressive value enhancements, such as the September 2025 update that boosted data volumes in Kombi-Pakete by 66% at unchanged prices, positioning Aldi Talk as a low-cost leader in Germany's prepaid segment according to independent comparisons. Tariffs auto-renew every four weeks if credit suffices, with options to pause or switch without penalties, and include roaming parity for calls, , and data. The core offerings are the Kombi-Pakete, which bundle Allnet flats for calls and in and the with high inclusions supporting up to 100 Mbit/s:
PaketPrice (€/4 weeks)Data VolumeAdditional Features
S8.9925 GBUnlimited 1 GB bookable at no extra cost; EU roaming included
M13.9950 GBAs above; suitable for moderate users
L18.99100 GBAs above; for heavy data needs
These plans start with a 10 € credit on new SIMs and allow on-demand Unlimited GB add-ons for 1 € per GB beyond inclusions. For lighter usage, the Basis-Tarif operates on a pay-per-use model with 0.11 € per minute or SMS in Germany/EU and data at approximately 0.03 €/MB, providing an entry point without recurring commitments. Separate data-only Pakete range from 4.99 € for 2 GB (S) to 14.99 € for 10 GB (L) over four weeks, with 5G access. Jahres-Pakete offer annual commitments for further savings, such as the XS variant at a fixed low rate including basic flats but limited data. These annual tariff packages do not include a SIM card; they are booked onto an existing active ALDI TALK SIM card. For new customers, a separate Starter-Set (including SIM card) must be purchased and activated, though it can be bought together with the Jahres-Paket in ALDI stores, often at a promotional price (e.g., €2.99 instead of €9.99 as of early 2026). This tiered structure ensures accessibility across usage levels while undercutting full MVNOs and MNOs on per-GB costs.

Retail Integration and Distribution

Aldi Talk maintains tight integration with Aldi's retail operations by distributing its core products—Starter SIM cards, top-up vouchers, and annual tariff packages (Jahres-Pakete)—exclusively through Aldi supermarkets in Germany. These items are available at checkout counters in all stores operated by both Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd, enabling impulse purchases amid routine grocery shopping. Starter Sets, regularly priced at €9.99 and including €10 initial credit, contain the SIM card and facilitate immediate activation for new users. Jahres-Pakete do not include a SIM card and are booked onto an existing active ALDI TALK SIM card; however, new customers can purchase a Jahres-Paket together with a Starter Set at ALDI store checkouts, often at a promotional price for the Starter Set (e.g., €2.99 instead of €9.99 as of early 2026), allowing simultaneous activation of a new SIM and booking of the annual package. Top-up vouchers, denominated at €5, €15, or €30, are also stocked in the checkout area, supporting ongoing prepaid recharges without requiring online access. This model leverages Aldi's extensive store network—over 4,500 locations nationwide—to minimize distribution costs and reach price-sensitive consumers directly at the point of everyday retail interaction. While physical retail forms the primary channel, online sales of Starter Sets via alditalk.de provide a supplementary distribution avenue, particularly for customers preferring digital activation. This hybrid approach ensures broad while embedding the service within Aldi's discount retail ecosystem, where products complement low-price grocery offerings without dedicated telecom outlets.

Services and Features

Prepaid Plans and Data Options

ALDI TALK offers exclusively prepaid services without contracts, basic fees, or fixed terms, enabling users to recharge credit flexibly via app, online portal, or stores. The tariff structure is based on a pay-as-you-go base tariff supplemented by bookable packages, with no minimum turnover or contract durations required. The popular offerings are the Kombi-Pakete, 4-week bundles combining unlimited national calls and (Allnet-Flat) with high data volumes supporting speeds up to 100 Mbit/s where available, plus roaming inclusion. On September 15, 2025, data allowances across these packages increased by 66% at unchanged prices to enhance value for users. Occasionally, ALDI TALK offers Jahrespakete, which are annual tariff packages providing Allnet-Flat calls and SMS, a data volume allowance, and EU roaming for 365 days upon a one-time payment. These packages do not include a SIM card and are booked onto an existing active ALDI TALK SIM card. For new customers, a separate Starter-Set (including SIM card) must be purchased and activated, though it can be bought together with the Jahres-Paket in ALDI stores, often at a promotional price (e.g., €2.99 instead of €9.99 as of early 2026).

For users preferring minimal commitments, a basic prepaid tariff applies per-use rates after initial 10 € starter credit, with calls at 9 cents per minute, SMS at 9 cents each, and data billed incrementally unless add-ons are selected. Historically, ALDI TALK was known for the Community-Flat offering reduced or free calls between ALDI TALK customers; this has largely been integrated into the Allnet-Flat of Kombi-Pakete, but remains bookable as an option in the base tariff. Data options extend beyond bundles via standalone Daten-Pakete, bookable as 4-week add-ons to the base tariff or alongside voice services, providing targeted internet access with 5G compatibility. If the included data volume is exhausted before the end of the 28-day period, customers can book additional volume through Speed-Resets or further data packages.

Network Coverage and Technology

Aldi Talk functions as a (MVNO) utilizing the infrastructure of , which operates the O2 mobile network. This arrangement grants Aldi Talk customers full access to O2's , including its LTE and capabilities, without owning physical spectrum or base stations. The partnership originated with , acquired by in 2014 and integrated into the O2 , ensuring continuity in network utilization. O2's network supports for high-speed data transmission, with typical download speeds exceeding 50 Mbit/s in compatible areas, and non-standalone (NSA) deployment since 2019. Since summer 2023, Aldi Talk has offered 5G access in its tariffs without additional cost in standard combination packages where technically available and with a compatible device, with download speeds typically up to 50 or 100 Mbit/s depending on the tariff and conditions. The service supports Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and Wi-Fi Calling (WLAN-Calling), enabling higher voice call quality and better reachability in buildings. Standalone (SA) remains unavailable for Aldi Talk users, as it is not yet rolled out for on the host network. Coverage maps for Aldi Talk direct users to O2's interactive tool, confirming equivalent availability without MVNO-specific restrictions. As of 2025, O2 provides coverage to approximately 95% of Germany's population, with ongoing expansions targeting full nationwide reach by year-end through upgrades at over 1,000 sites and activation of around 200 new masts in the first half of the year alone. 4G LTE extends to over 92% population coverage, bolstered by recent rural enhancements including 1,600 site improvements. While urban areas exhibit strong reliability—earning O2 a "sehr gut" rating in independent tests—rural penetration has historically lagged behind competitors like and but has improved markedly via spectrum refarming and new infrastructure. Aldi Talk users can verify local status via the provider's live network check tool for real-time outage detection.

Customer Management Tools

Aldi Talk provides customer management primarily through the free ALDI TALK and the Mein ALDI TALK , enabling prepaid users to handle account functions without contractual obligations or direct agent interaction. The app, available on and the Apple since at least 2011, supports Android and devices and has received user ratings averaging 4.0 out of 5 from over 236,000 reviews as of October 2025. Key app functionalities include querying balance, topping up via vouchers (in denominations of €5, €15, or €30) or direct bank debit, monitoring volume and consumption history, booking or canceling options such as packages or call minutes, and viewing invoices. Users can also update personal details, manage automatic top-ups, and access support resources like directly within the interface. The web portal mirrors these features, allowing via phone number and (or alternative usernames), with additional options for immediate recharges and option changes accessible 24/7.
  • Credit and Usage Monitoring: Real-time balance checks and detailed logs of voice, SMS, and data usage to prevent overages in the prepaid model.
  • Tariff Management: Self-booking of add-ons like the Allnet Flat for unlimited calls or boosters, with cancellations effective immediately.
  • Payment Options: Integration for SEPA setups and scanning, reducing reliance on physical stores.
In countries like Australia (under ALDI Mobile), analogous tools via the My ALDI Mobile portal offer similar self-service for balance checks and plan adjustments, adapted to local networks. These digital tools emphasize low-friction prepaid management, aligning with Aldi Talk's discount retail model by minimizing staffed support costs.

Operations by Country

Germany

Aldi Talk commenced operations in Germany in 2005 as a prepaid mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) under the Aldi supermarket brand, targeting budget-conscious consumers with no-contract tariffs sold exclusively through Aldi stores. The service is operated by Medion AG, which functions as the mobile virtual network enabler (MVNE), handling technical and customer-facing aspects while leveraging Aldi's retail distribution. Aldi Talk utilizes the Telefónica Deutschland network, encompassing O2 and the former E-Plus infrastructure, providing nationwide 4G LTE and 5G coverage with speeds up to 150 Mbit/s in supported areas. This partnership, established post-2014 E-Plus acquisition by Telefónica, enables cost-efficient access to robust infrastructure without Aldi owning spectrum or towers. Operations are segmented by Aldi Nord (northern Germany) and Aldi Süd (southern Germany), though offerings remain standardized under a unified brand and website. Core services include flexible prepaid tariffs such as Tarif S (9.99 € every 4 weeks for 15 GB data, unlimited calls/ in /), Tarif M (14.99 € for 30 GB), and Tarif L (19.99 € for 60 GB), with no basic fees or long-term commitments. Additional options encompass Kombi-Pakete for higher data (up to 100 GB), routers, and app-based management for top-ups, usage tracking, and number porting incentives like a 10 € bonus. Distribution relies on starter kits available in over 4,000 supermarkets, emphasizing in-store activation and impulse purchases tied to grocery shopping. As a discounter, Aldi Talk holds a leading position among German MVNOs, ranking among the top five by revenue and serving millions of users focused on affordability over premium features. Its model has pressured incumbents to lower prices, though coverage in rural areas mirrors Telefónica's, occasionally trailing or in remote regions.

Switzerland

ALDI Mobile functions as a (MVNO) in , leveraging the of Sunrise Communications AG for nationwide coverage including capabilities. The service emphasizes low-cost, flexible mobile plans without mandatory contract terms, aligning with 's discount retail model by distributing SIM cards and starter kits exclusively through ALDI SUISSE outlets. Available offerings include prepaid tariffs for pay-as-you-go usage and monthly subscriptions such as the Basic plan, which provides unlimited calls and SMS within alongside 8 GB of data, and the Swiss Unlimited Extra plan featuring unlimited high-speed data domestically. International roaming options extend to select European countries, the , and with bundled minutes and data add-ons, though usage incurs standard rates outside designated zones. Pricing starts at competitive levels, with features like lifetime discounts applied to eligible long-term subscriptions to encourage without binding commitments. Customer self-service is supported via the ALDI Mobile app, enabling remote monitoring of balances, data usage, and plan adjustments, alongside online account management through the official portal. Network performance relies on Sunrise's infrastructure, which covers urban and rural areas effectively, though speeds and availability vary by location as per standard MVNO dependencies on host operator quality.

Australia

ALDImobile launched on 6 March 2013 as Aldi's prepaid mobile service in , offering SIM-only plans distributed through Aldi supermarkets. It functions as a (MVNO), reselling access to the Wholesale Mobile Network, which delivers coverage to over 98.5% of the Australian population and in populated areas. The service emphasizes low-cost prepaid tariffs with features like data rollover, unlimited national calls and texts on select plans, and long-validity options such as 365-day packs—for instance, a $120 annual plan providing 120 GB of data (equivalent to 10 GB monthly). Plans start from $5 starter kits for pay-as-you-go usage, with higher tiers offering up to 100 GB monthly for $49, and recent updates in November 2023 introduced access on eligible plans. eSIM support is scheduled for rollout across all plans in October 2025 to simplify activation. By March 2024, ALDImobile had expanded to 1.7 million customers, positioning it as Australia's largest MVNO by subscriber base. Earlier metrics from 2019 indicated over 650,000 users, during which it secured multiple Customer Satisfaction Awards for mobile providers, achieving an 83% satisfaction rate. Customer management occurs via a dedicated app for balance checks, usage tracking, and recharges, alongside in-store support at locations. Network prioritization follows 's wholesale structure, placing ALDImobile behind direct customers but ahead of some other resellers during congestion.

Austria

HoT Hofer Telekom, the mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) brand operated in association with Aldi Süd's Austrian subsidiary Hofer, launched on January 2, 2015, marking the entry of discount supermarket-backed telecom services into the Austrian market. The service was introduced by Hofer Telekom und Service GmbH, a subsidiary of Ventocom GmbH, as Austria's first independent MVNO without its own infrastructure. Initial offerings undercut competitors with a bundled package of minutes, SMS, and data for €9.90 per month, distributed exclusively through Hofer stores and online. HoT utilizes the network of Austria ( Telekom) for its services, providing nationwide coverage including LTE and, since expansions, capabilities where available. For new customers, connectivity relies fully on this infrastructure, while some legacy subscribers may access portions of the Hutchison Drei Austria network as regulated by the Austrian telecommunications authority RTR. SIM cards are available for €1.99 at Hofer outlets, with activation via call, , or data usage, emphasizing a prepaid model without contracts or annual fees. By September 2020, HoT had acquired one million subscribers, reflecting strong uptake among price-sensitive consumers shopping at Hofer. Current prepaid tariff packages include options like the €9.90/30-day plan offering 1,000 minutes or and 55 GB of LTE/ data (with roaming inclusion under "Roam like at home" rules), alongside higher-tier bundles for heavier users and social tariffs for eligible low-income households. Additional features encompass number portability at no cost, app-based management for top-ups and usage tracking, and international calling add-ons. HoT maintains operations without its own licenses, focusing on cost efficiency through retail integration and minimal overhead, with handled via and online portals.

Slovenia

HoT Hofer Telekom, operating as HoT mobil, represents Süd's (MVNO) services in under the Hofer retail brand. Launched on May 11, 2017, it functions without its own infrastructure, partnering with A1 Slovenija for access to , , /LTE, and later networks. Ventocom serves as the mobile virtual network enabler (MVNE) managing technical operations. SIM cards and top-ups are distributed exclusively through Hofer stores across , with customer support provided digitally via the website and app, eliminating the need for physical service centers. The service emphasizes prepaid, contract-free plans with a commitment to unchanging low prices since inception, positioning it as a budget-oriented option integrated with Aldi's discount retail model. As of 2025, HoT maintains fully digital account management, including app-based payments, voucher top-ups, and tariff selections. Core offerings include data-heavy packages like the unified HoT Giga plan, introduced in April 2024, providing unlimited domestic data, calls, and for €14 per month, alongside smaller starter tariffs for basic usage. These plans leverage high-speed and LTE coverage from the host network, with no binding contracts or hidden fees, appealing to cost-conscious consumers. Roaming options extend to countries under fair-use policies inherent to the underlying infrastructure. HoT has achieved rapid growth, claiming status as Slovenia's fastest-expanding VMNO, driven by consistent service expansions without price hikes and strong retail integration via over 80 Hofer locations at launch, now expanded nationwide. This model has sustained operations without reported discontinuations, maintaining relevance in a competitive market dominated by full operators like A1, , and Telemach.

Reception and Market Impact

Market Share and Performance Metrics

Aldi Talk holds a significant position in the German mobile market as a leading (MVNO), with over 7.5 million customers reported as of October 2024. This subscriber base represents approximately 7% of Germany's total mobile subscriptions, which stood at around 105 million in 2023. Among prepaid and discounter providers, Aldi Talk is the market leader, outperforming competitors like Connect and Blau in customer numbers. Performance metrics highlight strong and satisfaction. In a January 2025 survey of over 500,000 respondents, Aldi Talk achieved the highest customer loyalty rate among mobile providers, with respondents indicating they would choose the service again. A separate 2025 reader poll ranked it first in the segment with over 26% of votes for best provider, ahead of Congstar and Otelo. These figures reflect effective low-cost and reliable service on the network, contributing to sustained growth despite a stable overall mobile market. In other operating countries such as , , and , Aldi Talk maintains a niche presence but lacks dominant data comparable to , where it benefits from Aldi's extensive retail footprint for distribution. eCommerce revenue from its German online platform reached $81.3 million in 2024, indicating robust top-up and activation activity with projected 20-50% growth into 2025.

Consumer Benefits and Competition Effects

Aldi Talk provides consumers with prepaid mobile tariffs characterized by low entry costs and flexibility, typically starting at around €7.99 for basic bundles without long-term contracts, appealing to budget-conscious users and those avoiding commitments. This model, leveraging the (O2) network, delivers access to speeds up to 100 MBit/s in supported areas, with recent updates in increasing volumes in combo packages by up to 100%, such as 60 GB options for extended periods. Annual prepaid plans, refreshed in November , offer sustained value through options like 12 months of service with escalating allotments, reducing per-month costs for light to moderate users. Additional perks include global data usable in over 100 countries and integration with stores for easy SIM acquisition and top-ups, enhancing accessibility for everyday shoppers. These features position Aldi Talk as a viable alternative for expats and short-term residents, often ranking among top prepaid options alongside competitors like Connect due to its cost-efficiency and EU-wide inclusion. As a prominent (MVNO) in , Aldi Talk contributes to heightened price competition in the prepaid segment, where providers face ongoing pressure to match discounter tariffs amid a market saturated with low-cost alternatives. Its strategy of bundling affordable, high-data plans has indirectly compelled major operators and fellow MVNOs to enhance offerings, fostering broader consumer gains through reduced average tariffs and improved value propositions across the industry. By capturing notable —evident in its appeal to and stable user base—Aldi Talk exemplifies how MVNOs erode pricing power of traditional networks, promoting efficiency without compromising essential coverage via host .

Criticisms and Customer Satisfaction

Aldi Talk has received mixed customer satisfaction ratings, with professional surveys indicating relatively high loyalty and tariff quality, while user-generated reviews highlight persistent issues with service and network performance. In the Connect Kundenzufriedenheit Mobilfunk survey for 2025, Aldi Talk ranked third among branded providers with a score of 126 points and a grade of 1.7 (good), trailing only Blau and ahead of competitors like Lidl Connect. Similarly, independent tests from Stiftung Warentest in 2025 recommended several Aldi Talk prepaid and unlimited tariffs for their value and fairness, awarding the Jahres-Paket L a score of 4 in a prepaid comparison and praising unlimited options like Tarif M for cost-effectiveness without excessive throttling. Aldi Talk has also been recognized for highest customer loyalty in evaluations by Deutschland Test and Focus Money, attributing this to transparent pricing and reliable billing. Criticisms frequently center on responsiveness and processes, with users reporting long wait times, unhelpful support, and difficulties in resolving billing or porting issues. On , Aldi Talk holds a low average rating of 1.9 out of 5 from over 4,270 reviews as of late 2025, where complaints include rude staff, unauthorized charges, and challenges in obtaining refunds for unused credit upon cancellation. These user reviews, while self-selected and potentially skewed toward negative experiences, contrast with higher marks in structured surveys, suggesting service gaps may disproportionately affect dissatisfied customers who seek resolution. Network-related grievances are common due to reliance on () infrastructure, which Stiftung Warentest rated "good" overall in 2024 but noted weaker rural coverage; specific incidents include a multi-month outage in in 2025 affecting thousands of users' mobile data and voice services. Additional points of contention involve throttling after high usage thresholds and limitations, though these align with standard MVNO practices and have been deemed fair in Warentest fairness assessments. In CHIP's 2025 prepaid tariff test, Aldi Talk earned a "good" (1.63) overall, praising affordability but docking points for occasional speed inconsistencies tied to the host network. Despite these, retention remains strong among price-sensitive users, as evidenced by awards, indicating that criticisms do not universally deter adoption in urban areas with better O2 signal strength.

Discontinued Operations

Belgium

Aldi Talk launched its (MVNO) services in on February 21, 2007, operating on the Base network and offering prepaid SIM cards sold exclusively through supermarkets. The service targeted occasional users with competitively priced prepaid options, including starter packs providing initial call credit. In 2017, Aldi announced the discontinuation of Aldi Talk operations, citing inability to comply with new Belgian mandating customer identification registration for prepaid SIM cards to curb anonymous use by terrorists. The , enforced by regulators, required operators to collect and verify user data, a process Aldi stated it could not implement effectively. All services ceased on June 6, 2017, with existing customers instructed to exhaust their credit balances or port numbers to alternative providers before that date. The withdrawal followed voluntary suspension of new prepaid card sales, as Aldi was among operators unprepared for the registration requirements amid heightened security concerns post-terror attacks. No revival or successor service has been introduced by in since the shutdown.

Netherlands

entered the Dutch market in July 2009 as a prepaid (MVNO) under the branding of Aldi unit Mobile. Services were distributed exclusively through supermarkets, targeting budget-conscious consumers with low-cost prepaid tariffs, including calls at €0.06 per minute. The service relied on the network for nationwide coverage, providing access to , , and later infrastructure equivalent to KPN's offerings. Over its 13-year operation, Aldi Talk maintained a focus on simple, no-contract prepaid plans with options for voice, , and bundles, appealing to occasional users and those avoiding long-term commitments. Subscriber estimates in the early years placed it among smaller MVNOs, with growth tied to Aldi's retail footprint of over 400 stores in the . Operations ceased on June 30, 2022, with announcing the full discontinuation of its Dutch mobile brand, halting all new activations, top-ups, and ongoing services. The decision aligned with broader retail divestitures from non-core telecom activities, though no explicit reasons such as financial losses or market saturation were detailed in announcements. Existing customers received assistance to port numbers and migrate to competing providers, including guidance on alternative prepaid options from carriers like or . Post-discontinuation, shifted emphasis back to its primary grocery operations, eliminating in-store telecom sales.
