Biography
[edit]
Amel Bent grew up in the Paris suburb of La Courneuve[1] with her Algerian father and Moroccan mother. She has a brother and a sister.[1][2] Her career jump started after making it to the semi-finals of the reality TV show Nouvelle Star 2, France's version of Pop Idol. Although her performance did not make it to the finals, she was still noticed by some of the show's producers, and would end up making her début album later that year, titled: Un Jour d'été, released in late 2004. The album would sell more than 550,000 copies in France alone,[3] but the success of the album would ultimately be derived from the single "Ma philosophie", which would sell more than 500,000 copies, staying at the No. 1 slot in France for more than six weeks during and after sales.
In 2012, Bent was one of the contestants during the Third Season of Danse avec les stars. She and her partner Christophe Licata finished in second place, but won the celebrity dancing show's Christmas special.[4]
For her single "Je reste" 2011, Bent co-starred with the actor from Metal Hurlant Chronicles Karl E. Landler.[5][6]

Family and heritage
Amel Bent, born Amel Bent Bachir on June 21, 1985, in Paris, France, is the daughter of an Algerian father and a Moroccan mother, reflecting her Maghrebi heritage.[1][4] Her full name carries Arabic roots, with "Amel" meaning "hope" and "Bent" signifying "daughter of," followed by "Bachir," the name of her maternal grandfather.[5] She grew up with one brother and one sister in a family shaped by her North African origins, which have profoundly influenced her cultural identity.[6][7] In July 2025, Bent obtained Algerian nationality to honor her paternal lineage, expressing pride in her dual heritage and the emotional connection to her father's roots despite his absence during her childhood.[8][4] Raised primarily by her mother after her parents' separation, Bent's upbringing in the Paris suburb of La Courneuve was marked by the blending of French and Maghrebi cultural elements, fostering a bilingual environment influenced by Arabic language and traditions.[9]Upbringing and early interests
Amel Bent was born on 21 June 1985 in Paris, but grew up in the Paris suburb of La Courneuve.[1][4] La Courneuve, particularly the Cité des 4000 housing project where she grew up, was a multicultural, working-class neighborhood marked by socioeconomic challenges and a diverse immigrant population that shaped her resilient worldview.[10][11] She received her early education in local schools in La Courneuve, later earning a scientific baccalauréat while initially pursuing studies in psychology.[1] From a young age, Bent immersed herself in music, discovering her vocal talent through informal practice at home and community spaces.[12] Her early influences included the powerful vocals of Whitney Houston, the rhythms of Algerian raï music reflecting her North African heritage, and French chanson artists like Charles Aznavour, introduced by her mother.[1][12] As a teenager, Bent cultivated creative hobbies such as writing poetry to express her emotions and performing songs at family gatherings, where she first shared her voice with loved ones.[12] These experiences evolved into her initial amateur singing opportunities at local youth centers, including the Maison des Jeunes et de la Culture (MJC), where she honed her skills through regular rehearsals starting around age 11.[10][1]Career beginnings
Nouvelle Star participation
Amel Bent, then 18 years old, auditioned for the second season of the French talent competition Nouvelle Star in 2004, marking her entry into the public eye as an aspiring singer. Selected during the casting phase in Lille, she performed "I Surrender" by Céline Dion followed by "La Bohème" by Charles Aznavour, showcasing her emotive delivery and versatility across genres. The judges' panel, consisting of Marianne James, Manu Katché, André Manoukian, and Dove Attia, delivered mixed feedback: while Katché praised her "super voix" and James offered enthusiastic approval, Attia controversially dismissed her as a "very good karaoke singer," voting no; Bent advanced nonetheless with three yes votes out of four.[13] Throughout the competition, Bent progressed steadily to the live shows, captivating audiences with soulful renditions that highlighted her R&B influences from childhood exposure to artists like Whitney Houston and Stevie Wonder. A standout moment came in the seventh prime on April 29, 2004, where she delivered a compelling cover of "Fallin'" by Alicia Keys, earning widespread acclaim for its raw emotion and technical poise, followed by "Savoir aimer" by Florent Pagny. Her performances consistently demonstrated strong stage presence and vocal control, drawing positive critiques from judges like James, who lauded her interpretive depth, though some noted areas for refinement in phrasing. Bent's journey culminated in the semi-finals, where she finished in third place overall, eliminated just short of the finale amid stiff competition from finalists Steeve Estatof and Julien Laurence.[14][15] Despite her elimination, Bent's visibility on Nouvelle Star generated immediate media buzz, positioning her as a breakout talent in the French pop scene and leading to a swift professional breakthrough. Shortly after the season concluded, she secured a recording contract with Sony BMG, which propelled her toward her debut album release later that year. Attia later expressed regret over his initial critique, acknowledging Bent's talent and supporting her burgeoning career.[16]Debut single and album
Following her exposure on Nouvelle Star, Amel Bent released her debut single "Ma philosophie" on November 29, 2004.[17] The track, co-written by Bent and rapper Diam's alongside Blair Mackichan, debuted at number one on the French Singles Chart and remained there for six consecutive weeks.[17] It amassed over 500,000 units sold, earning a diamond certification from SNEP on June 15, 2005.[18] Bent's debut album, Un Jour d'été, followed shortly after on November 30, 2004, blending R&B and pop influences with contemporary French chanson elements. The record peaked at number three on the French Albums Chart and achieved platinum status in France, with sales surpassing 500,000 copies by early 2006.[19] Its success was largely propelled by the lead single "Ma philosophie," which helped establish Bent as a rising star in French urban pop.Music career
Early albums and singles (2004–2007)
Following the success of her debut album Un Jour d'été, which achieved platinum certification in France for sales exceeding 300,000 units, Amel Bent released several singles that solidified her presence on the French charts between 2005 and 2006.[20] The third single from the album, "Ne retiens pas tes larmes," written by Franck Sitbon, peaked at number 5 on the French Singles Chart and contributed to the album's ongoing commercial momentum by exploring themes of emotional vulnerability in relationships. This period marked Bent's early stylistic foundation in R&B-infused pop, blending soulful vocals with introspective lyrics that resonated with a young audience. Bent's second studio album, À 20 ans, arrived on June 15, 2007, via Jive/Epic Records, reflecting on themes of maturity, family, and personal growth as she turned 20.[21] The album featured 14 tracks, including the poignant "Chanson pour papa," a dedication to her father that captured familial longing through heartfelt balladry, and "Compliquée," which delved into relational complexities. Produced with a mix of pop and emerging urban elements, it earned gold certification from SNEP on June 20, 2007, for 75,000 units sold, establishing Bent's commercial viability beyond her debut.[22] Lead single "Nouveau Français", released on June 18, 2007, with a duration of 3:22, produced by Volodia Kore, and with lyrics by Lionel Florence and Pascal Obispo, debuted at number 3 on the French Singles Chart in June 2007, showcasing Bent's evolving sound with its energetic R&B rhythm and commentary on cultural identity.[23][24] The title track "À 20 ans," featuring a collaboration with rapper Diam's, peaked at number 13 on the Ultratip chart in Belgium and number 42 in France, infusing urban pop influences through Diam's verse on resilience and ambition, which broadened Bent's appeal in the French hip-hop scene.[25] These releases collectively sold over 100,000 units in France during 2007, highlighting Bent's transition toward a more dynamic, genre-blending style while maintaining her pop core.[26]Mid-period releases (2008–2019)
Amel Bent returned with her third studio album, Où je vais, released on December 4, 2009, via Jive Epic. The album marked a transitional phase in her sound, blending pop with introspective R&B elements, exploring themes of love, self-doubt, and personal direction through tracks like the title song "Où je vais" and "Je me sens bien." This release represented her experimentation with more mature lyrical content. In 2011, Bent released Délit Mineur on November 28, marking her return to a fuller pop-R&B fusion with urban undertones. The lead single "Je reste," issued on October 17, became one of her notable mid-career hits, peaking at No. 29 on the French Singles Chart and staying on the chart for 20 weeks.[27] The album's themes centered on emotional vulnerability and relational struggles, with songs like "Toi" and "Les chansons tristes" highlighting resilience in the face of heartbreak. Following this, Bent released Instinct on February 24, 2014, via Jive Epic, which delved deeper into contemporary R&B and chanson influences. The album addressed themes of inner strength and romantic introspection, featuring tracks such as "Instinct," "Ma chance," and "Tiens le coup," the latter incorporating rap-inspired elements for a more dynamic urban edge.[28][29] Following Instinct, Bent focused on family life, including the births of her first two children in 2016 and 2017, before returning with her sixth studio album Demain on May 17, 2019, through Capitol Music France.[30] Preceded by the single "Si on te demande" in 2018, the album included collaborations like "C'est la folie" with Soprano and tracks such as "T'aimer de trop," blending pop with subtle R&B grooves to explore growth and perseverance.[31][32] This work solidified her evolution during a decade defined by comebacks and thematic maturity.[33]Recent works (2020–present)
In 2021, Amel Bent released her seventh studio album, Vivante, which marked a significant return to her musical roots following a period of television commitments.[34] The album featured collaborations with artists such as Vitaa, Dadju, and Imen Es, blending pop and R&B elements with introspective lyrics.[35] A key single from the project, "Jusqu'au bout" featuring Imen Es, was released earlier that year and became a standout track, emphasizing themes of perseverance and self-empowerment.[36] A deluxe video edition of Vivante followed in 2022, incorporating visual content to enhance the album's narrative depth.[37] After focusing on family and select media appearances, Bent announced her eighth studio album, Minuit une, in early 2025, positioning it as a more personal and intimate exploration of motherhood, relationships, and emotional vulnerability.[38] Released on May 16, 2025, the album comprises 11 tracks, including "Décharge Mentale," which opens with raw reflections on sleepless nights and creative struggles; "La norme," addressing societal expectations; and "Météore" featuring Nadjee, a duet evoking fleeting connections.[39] Minuit une debuted at number three on the French iTunes Albums Chart and peaked at number two, reflecting strong initial fan engagement despite a competitive market.[40] To promote Minuit une, Bent performed a free concert at Westfield Forum des Halles in Paris on May 16, 2025, drawing crowds under the venue's canopy for an evening set that highlighted tracks from the new album alongside career highlights.[41] Building on this momentum, she announced a major headline show at Accor Arena on April 29, 2026, celebrating two decades in music with an anticipated large-scale production.[42]Television and media appearances
Coaching roles on The Voice
Amel Bent began her tenure as a coach on The Voice Kids France during season 5, which aired from October 2018 to December 2018, alongside fellow coaches Jenifer, Soprano, and M. Pokora. In this junior edition aimed at singers aged 6 to 15, she mentored emerging young talents, often guiding them toward expressive performances in genres like R&B, reflecting her own musical background. Although her team did not claim the season's victory—that honor went to Emma Cerchi from Soprano's team—Bent's involvement marked her entry into the franchise's coaching panel, where she emphasized building confidence in young performers through personalized feedback.[43] She returned for season 6 of The Voice Kids France, broadcast from September to October 2019, continuing to nurture a diverse roster of child contestants with a focus on emotional delivery and vocal technique suited to R&B influences. This season proved particularly successful for Bent, as her contestant Soan Arhimann, a 12-year-old from Saint-Denis, won the competition in the finale on October 25, 2019, performing Daniel Balavoine's "SOS d'un terrien en détresse" to secure the title with strong public support.[44] Bent's celebratory reaction highlighted her investment in her team's growth, describing the victory as a shared emotional milestone that reinforced her role as a supportive mentor for budding artists.[43] Her two-season stint on the kids' version established her as an approachable coach who prioritized passion and authenticity over technical perfection alone. Transitioning to the adult competition, Bent joined The Voice France as a coach starting with season 9 in January 2020, serving alongside Marc Lavoine, Pascal Obispo, and Lara Fabian. Over four seasons through 2023, she coached contestants spanning genres but often highlighted emotional resonance in performances, drawing from her R&B roots to encourage heartfelt interpretations. Notable talents from her teams included Rita Kassid in season 9, whose audition rendition of Édith Piaf's "La Vie en rose" moved Bent to tears and prompted an immediate turn, underscoring her affinity for raw, emotive vocals. In season 12 (2023), Bent guided Micha to the finale, where the contestant delivered powerful duets like a cover of Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's "Shallow" alongside Bent and teammate Arslane, finishing as runner-up to Aurélien Vivos.[45] Her coaching approach, characterized by vulnerability and encouragement of personal storytelling through song, helped propel several participants to advance far in the competition. In September 2023, following the conclusion of season 12, Bent announced a deliberate break from television commitments, including her role on The Voice, to refocus on her music career.[46] In a candid Instagram post on September 25, she explained the decision as necessary to return to songwriting and studio work, stating, "La route s'arrête là pour moi," while committing to a new album that would reconnect her with fans through authentic material.[47] This hiatus directly facilitated her musical resurgence, culminating in the release of her eighth studio album, Minuit Une, in 2025, which featured introspective tracks like "Décharge Mentale" and marked a creative renewal after years dominated by TV obligations.[48] The break allowed Bent to prioritize artistic output, leading to a tour announcement and renewed emphasis on live performances that echoed the emotional intensity she instilled in her former contestants. In November 2025, Bent announced her return as a coach for season 15 of The Voice France, set to air in 2026, joining Florent Pagny, Lara Fabian, and Tayc.[49]Other television engagements
Amel Bent has made notable guest appearances on several French television programs, showcasing her music through performances and discussions about her career. In December 2020, she performed the duet "Jusqu'au bout" with Imen Es at the NRJ Music Awards broadcast on TF1, an event where she was also nominated for French Female Artist of the Year.[50][51] She has frequently appeared on the France 5 talk show C à vous, delivering live performances and sharing insights into her professional journey. For instance, in January 2021, Bent offered an acoustic version of her single "1,2,3," and in February 2025, she performed "Décharge mentale" during an episode focused on her latest releases.[52][53] In May 2025, she joined a special live edition of C à vous broadcast from the Cannes Film Festival, where she promoted her acting debut in the film Ma Frère and reflected on her transition from music to screen.[54] Bent also engaged with talent competition formats outside her coaching commitments, appearing as a guest performer on TF1's Star Academy in October 2025. During the second prime of the season, she duetted with contestant Ambre on "Le droit à l'erreur" and with Léa on "Tourner la tête," providing mentorship-like interaction through shared performances.[55] In October 2025, Bent made a guest appearance on the finale of The Voice Kids France season 11, performing a duet of "Ma philosophie" with contestant Kimon.[56]Other ventures
Acting roles
Amel Bent made her television acting debut in 2013 with a guest role in the French comedy series Scènes de ménages, where she portrayed the character Amel, a nurse attending to one of the show's elderly protagonists, in the prime-time special episode "Entre amis."[57][58] Her performance in this light-hearted domestic sketch series marked an early foray into scripted comedy, blending her public persona with a fictional caregiver role amid the show's ensemble of quirky couples.[58] In 2021, Bent transitioned to a more dramatic role in the television film Les Sandales blanches, directed by Christian Faure, playing the lead character Malika Bellaribi, an Algerian immigrant who overcomes physical disability and social barriers to pursue a career as an opera singer in post-colonial France.[59] This biographical drama, inspired by the real-life story of opera singer Malika Bellaribi-Le Moal, featured Bent in her first major acting role, highlighting themes of resilience and cultural integration in immigrant communities.[60] Also in 2021, she made a guest appearance in an episode of the Canal+ series Validé.[61] Bent has also made minor on-screen appearances, including a single episode in the 2020 Belgian game show Kemps, where she appeared as herself in a celebrity challenge format involving card-matching competitions.[62][63] This non-scripted guest spot underscored her versatility in media but remained outside her primary acting pursuits.Dance and variety shows
Amel Bent participated in the third season of the French dance competition Danse avec les stars in 2012, the local adaptation of Dancing with the Stars. Paired with professional dancer Christophe Licata, she competed over several weeks, performing a range of styles including tango, paso doble, samba, and jive. Her routines were noted for their energy and technical improvement, with standout performances such as a samba to "Samba de Janeiro" by Bellini that incorporated Brazilian flair and earned praise for its vibrancy. In the jive during week three, Bent received scores of 8 and a 9 from judge Marie-Claude Pietragalla, highlighting her dynamic footwork and enthusiasm. Throughout the season, she achieved high scores, including a peak of 37 points, and garnered strong public support, with many observers arguing she deserved the overall victory over winner Emmanuel Moire due to her consistent progress and charisma. Bent and Licata finished as runners-up on December 1, 2012.[64][65][66] Following her strong showing in the main season, Bent returned for the holiday-themed special Danse avec les stars fête Noël on December 22, 2012, broadcast on TF1. Teaming up with dancer Christophe Licata for a cha-cha to "Flashdance... What a Feeling" by Irene Cara, her performance emphasized joyful lifts and precise synchronization, receiving perfect 10/10 scores from all judges for both technical and artistic merit. The routine was celebrated for its uplifting energy and Bent's radiant presence, which helped her secure additional "coup de cœur" bonuses from judges Pietragalla and Chris Marques. She ultimately won the special, outperforming competitors including Sofia Essaïdi and M. Pokora, in an episode that drew 4.6 million viewers. This victory provided Bent with a sense of redemption after the season finale and further showcased her versatility in light entertainment formats.[67] In addition to dance competitions, Bent made guest appearances on variety programs during her early career, enhancing her visibility as a performer. In 2010, she appeared as a musical guest on the long-running talk and entertainment show Vivement dimanche, hosted by Michel Drucker, where she performed selections from her album Où je vais. These spots allowed her to connect with broader audiences through live music and casual discussions, blending her singing talents with the show's eclectic format.[68]Discography

Her debut single, "Ma philosophie", released in late 2004, marked her breakthrough, topping the French Singles Chart for several weeks and earning a diamond certification from SNEP for over 500,000 units sold.[77] The track, co-written with Diam's, showcased Bent's emotive vocals and themes of self-acceptance, contributing to the success of her debut album Un Jour d'été. Subsequent singles from the same album, such as "Le droit à l'erreur" (peaking at No. 7) and "Ne retiens pas tes larmes" (peaking at No. 5), also performed strongly, solidifying her presence on the charts.[78] In 2007, Bent released "Nouveau Français" as the lead single from her second album À 20 ans, which peaked at No. 3 on the French Singles Chart.[78] In 2011, Bent released "Je reste" as the lead single from her album Délit mineur, which debuted at No. 29 on the French Singles Chart and spent 20 weeks in the top 100, reflecting her evolving style with introspective lyrics about perseverance in relationships.[27] The song received widespread radio airplay and helped propel the album to gold status in France. Later singles like "Où je vais" (2009, peaking at No. 4) demonstrated her versatility, incorporating dance elements while maintaining emotional depth.[78] Bent has also excelled in collaborations, often featuring on tracks that highlight her vocal range alongside prominent French artists.
