Development

Concept and design

Assemble with Care originated as a follow-up project to ustwo games' acclaimed series, shifting focus toward tactile, meditative gameplay that prioritizes emotional engagement over intricate puzzle-solving mechanics. The developers aimed to create a distinct experience that builds on their expertise in , emphasizing and a sense of calm restoration. At its core, the game's concept revolves around using the repair of sentimental objects as a for mending fractured human relationships, drawing from ustwo's passion for emotional narratives intertwined with the charm of analogue items from the . Players assume the role of Maria, a traveling restorer, whose hands-on interactions with everyday artifacts like cameras and tape decks reveal deeper stories of connection and among the townsfolk. This approach was inspired by the developers' desire to evoke nostalgia through physical, hand-crafted elements that carry personal significance. The fictional town of Bellariva was designed as a sun-soaked coastal locale to foster a sense of warmth, , and tight-knit community ties, serving as the backdrop for Maria's restorative journeys. This setting draws from 1980s aesthetics and personal childhood memories of the team, enhancing the game's themes of healing and rediscovery. Early prototyping centered on refining the repair mechanics to achieve a balance between broad and satisfying tactile feedback, ensuring players feel the meditative of disassembly and reassembly without overwhelming complexity. These iterations honed interactions that integrate seamlessly with the narrative, making object restoration a intuitive gateway to emotional insights.

Production

Assemble with Care underwent an 18-month development period beginning in early 2018, with games serving as both the developer and publisher. The project peaked at a team of around 12 members, including four programmers, three artists, two designers, one sound engineer, and additional contributors such as a producer/writer and a technical artist. Key roles included lead programmer Matthew Newcombe, lead designer Joel Beardshaw, lead artist Chris Cox, art director David Fernández Huerta, producer/writer Adrienne Law, and sound designer Thomas Williams. The game was built using the Unity engine to ensure cross-platform compatibility, particularly for mobile devices, with a custom build pipeline that incorporated automated testing via the Unity Test Framework to streamline iterations. Technical art played a central role in achieving the stylized 2D visuals and animations, employing custom shaders for effects like vertex displacement and to create a hand-painted, organic "boiling" motion at 5 frames per second, evoking animated films such as The Old Man and the Sea. Artists focused on a storybook aesthetic with shifting brush stroke textures and performance optimizations, such as precomputed texture sampling over algorithmic noise, to maintain fluidity on mobile hardware. A major challenge was implementing the touch-based disassembly and reassembly puzzles to feel intuitive and tactile on mobile screens, requiring extensive prototyping that narrowed 16 initial ideas to two viable concepts over the first year. Developers iterated on object selection using a collaborative "cool wall" of sketches, ensuring pieces fit narrative needs, mechanical complexity, and screen constraints while prioritizing "juicy" interactions for a satisfying real-world feel. Behind-the-scenes efforts included refining object physics through visual scripting tools like Fungus for puzzle automation and testing, alongside audio feedback integration by the sound team to enhance disassembly cues and emotional depth in interludes. Writers like Adrienne Law contributed to the heartfelt narrative segments, weaving personal stories around restored objects to amplify the restorative theme.

Gameplay

Mechanics

Assemble with Care features a core puzzle system centered on the disassembly and reassembly of antique objects, such as cameras, telephones, and music boxes, using intuitive touch gestures on mobile devices. Players manipulate parts by tapping to select components, dragging to remove or reposition them, rotating to unscrew elements, and swiping to connect wires or align pieces, simulating hands-on restoration work. This process involves identifying broken or worn parts, replacing them with provided spares from a toolkit, and ensuring all elements fit correctly to complete the repair. The mechanics emphasize precision without complexity, allowing players to experiment freely as the game provides visual and haptic feedback for correct actions. The game progresses through 13 episodic levels, each dedicated to repairing a single object with escalating complexity, such as navigating multiple internal layers, handling delicate fragile pieces, or managing intricate wiring setups. Levels are self-contained, building skills incrementally from simple battery replacements to more involved mechanical reconstructions, while maintaining a short duration suitable for brief sessions. There are no failure states, timers, or penalties for mistakes, fostering a relaxed pace that encourages exploration, trial-and-error, and patient problem-solving over rushed performance. Tactile controls are optimized for mobile touchscreens, enhancing the immersive feel of physical tinkering. Upon successful reassembly and functional testing of an object, players unlock memories in the form of wordless cutscenes that reveal the personal stories and emotional significance tied to each repaired object, providing closure to each repair task and motivating progression. These memories act as collectibles without additional gating, directly tied to puzzle completion to reinforce the satisfaction of restoration. The absence of competitive elements or scoring keeps the focus on the therapeutic joy of fixing, making the mechanics accessible and enjoyable for casual play.

Presentation and controls

Assemble with Care features a stylized 2D art style characterized by a storybook aesthetic, incorporating hand-drawn elements and vibrant colors that evoke the sunny coastal town of Bellariva. The visuals draw inspiration from painted , utilizing real-time rendering with techniques to create a painterly feel, including a "boiling" effect achieved through stepped vertex displacement at 5 frames per second to mimic hand-drawn imperfections. Smooth animations accompany the movement of object parts during disassembly and reassembly, enhancing the organic flow of interactions. The game's sound design emphasizes satisfying tactile audio cues, such as the clicks of turning screws, snaps of fitting pieces, and subtle mechanical sounds from materials like wood, plastic, and metal, which add texture and weight to the restoration process. These effects, inspired by elements and physical recordings like hand chime cymbals for metallic rattles, contribute to an immersive, playful experience. Complementing this is a gentle orchestral composed by Thomas Williams, blending piano, nostalgic synths, and acoustic instruments to underscore the meditative tone, with influences from film scores promoting calm and reflection. Touch controls serve as the primary , enabling drag-and-drop interactions for manipulating parts during repairs, which supports the precise disassembly required in puzzles. On PC versions, these are adapted for and keyboard, maintaining similar fluidity through point-and-select , with controller support also available and separate volume controls for , effects, and music. The journal interface allows players to view repaired objects and unlocked memories, presented as a personal scrapbook from Maria's perspective, facilitating exploration of the narratives tied to each item.
