Swedenborg experiences a profound spiritual crisis, marked by intense emotional and psychological turmoil. He feels a deep sense of his own inadequacy and a need for divine guidance. This crisis precipitates his shift towards religious and mystical concerns.

Swedenborg experiences his first major spiritual vision in April 1745, while in London. He claims to have seen Jesus Christ, who commissioned him to reveal the inner spiritual meaning of the Bible to humanity. This vision marks a turning point in his life, leading him to dedicate himself to theological pursuits.

Following his vision, Swedenborg resigns from his position at the Board of Mines to devote himself entirely to the study of the Bible, Hebrew, and theology. He believes he is being prepared for his divinely appointed task.
