Ever Oasis[2] is an action-adventure role-playing video game developed by Grezzo and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 3DS handheld game console. Revealed at E3 2016, the game was released in North America, Europe, and Australia in June 2017 and in Japan the following month. It was directed and produced by Koichi Ishii, the creator of the Chocobo and Moogle as well as the Mana series at Square Enix.

The story sees the player character, a young Seedling born from the Great Tree, working together with the water spirit, Esna to build the last oasis in a vast desert and helping out new residents along the way. The gameplay blends action role-playing elements with town management and dungeon crawling. Upon release, critical reception was generally positive, with points of praise going to the presentation and feedback loop of town building and management.

Plot

[edit]

Ever Oasis tells the story of Tethu/Tethi, a young Seedling, who with the help of a Water Spirit named Esna creates an oasis after Tethu/Tethi's brother, Nour, gets kidnapped and the Oasis falls to Chaos. As the player journeys to find more residents, they fight the creatures that have been taken over by Chaos. On the adventure, the player discovers several villages belonging to other races, such as the Drauk, the Serkah and the Lagora. Together with new allies, the player must work together with them to create the perfect Oasis as Tethu/Tethi continues to uncover the mystery of what happened to their brother.

Gameplay

[edit]

In the game, players try to build a prosperous oasis by completing missions in dungeons and caves in the desert. Players can form a party of up to three characters and battle enemies that are possessed by Chaos in real-time combat with the ability to switch between three party members. Players can forage for materials in caves and puzzle-filled dungeons that can be used to restock Bloom Booths. The Bloom Booths can produce Dewadems, which are a form of currency. Other Seedlings can join the player's oasis and can create their own unique Bloom Booth, which can be ranked up through restocking and completing quests. There are some Seedlings, however, that cannot create Bloom Booths. Members of other tribes who the players meet in their journey can help by joining on missions and exploring for materials. These materials can also be used to synthesize equipment and items at the player's treehouse.[3] The game is influenced by ancient Egyptian aesthetics.[4] It is considered a spiritual successor to the Mana series.[5]

Development

[edit]

Ever Oasis was announced at E3 2016. An announcement trailer was shown and a demo with mission gameplay was played on stream, although the game was not playable for the public at the event. A free demo was made available to the public at E3 2017. The demo was also released on the Nintendo eShop.

Story and Setting

Plot

Ever Oasis is set in the vast desert world of Vistrahda, a harsh environment where a corrupting force known as Chaos has spread, devastating landscapes and transforming creatures into aggressive monsters. In this unforgiving realm, oases created by ancient pacts between inhabitants and water spirits once provided sanctuaries, but Chaos has destroyed all but one, leaving it as the final refuge for survivors fleeing the encroaching decay. The narrative explores themes of creation and renewal amid inevitable decline, drawing on lore that depicts the world's origins through harmonious bonds now threatened by Chaos's entropic influence. The story centers on Tethu (or Tethi, depending on the player's gender choice), a young member of the race, whose existing home oasis falls to a Chaos assault early in the tale, scattering its inhabitants and forcing Tethu into a role of . Partnered with , a benevolent who guides and empowers Tethu with the ability to cultivate from seeds, the establishes a new oasis as a budding central hub for rebuilding society. This act marks the beginning of Tethu's journey as a guardian, tasked with restoring balance to Vistrahda by countering Chaos's spread. The core narrative arc unfolds across multiple chapters, where Tethu ventures into Chaos-infested territories to recruit members from scattered tribes, such as the Drauk or Serkah, thereby expanding the oasis and forging alliances essential for . As the story progresses, Tethu uncovers ancient secrets tied to the world's lore, including the origins of Seedlings' pact-making abilities and the cyclical forces of creation versus Chaos-induced decay that have shaped Vistrahda's history. These revelations build toward escalating confrontations with Chaos manifestations, culminating in a climactic battle that tests the protagonist's resolve to preserve the last bastions of life. Throughout, Esna's counsel provides pivotal insights into the lore, emphasizing the interplay between nurturing growth and resisting inevitable entropy.

Characters and World

The player assumes the role of a young , selectable as either Tethu (male) or Tethi (female), with options to customize appearance including skin tone and eye color. are a plant-inspired race symbolizing resilience in arid environments, capable of harnessing wind-based abilities like the Green Gale to support allies in exploration. The partners closely with , a benevolent who serves as a guide, emotional companion, and enabler of oasis creation, visible only to the hero and embodying the vital essence of water in the desert world. Esna's design draws from the necessity of water in harsh settings, fostering a dynamic relationship that encourages player curiosity about her thoughts and reactions. Supporting characters hail from diverse tribes, each contributing unique cultural traits and abilities that enrich the oasis community. The Lagora , rabbit-like skilled with dual blades, faces chronic shortages and builds settlements atop massive cacti, emphasizing themes of survival and resource scarcity. The Serkah, scorpion-like warriors, inhabit rocky islands connected by bridges, known for their strength and defensive prowess. Drauk, reptilian and proud, represent endurance with their lizard-inspired forms suited to heat. The enigmatic Noots, hybrid penguin-owl , act as transient visitors emerging during lunar events, shopping impulsively at Bloom Booths with non-verbal communication that highlights themes of mystery and transience. Tribal leaders and residents, such as the resourceful Sol from the Lagora, embody these groups' motivations, often driven by the need to protect their dwindling homelands from environmental collapse. Antagonists consist of Chaos-corrupted monsters, aggressive beasts spawned from the dark force known as Chaos, which corrupts wildlife and erodes the land's fertility. This shadowy entity ties into the world's , representing a cataclysmic power that once shattered prosperous civilizations and their protective oases. The game's universe unfolds in Vistrahda, a vast post-apocalyptic desert wasteland formed from the ruins of a once-lush ancient , where sand dunes and caves conceal remnants like massive from a forgotten era. Oases serve as rare magical sanctuaries, sustained by the Great Tree—an immense, life-giving entity born from Seedling- spirit pacts—that channels vital energy to combat . This lore draws on Egyptian-inspired mythology, portraying a world transformed by the spirits' waning power against Chaos, with tribal cultures adapting through affinities: for sustenance in Lagora settlements, for mobility among Seedlings, and earth-bound resilience for Serkah and Drauk. The interplay of these elements underscores themes of harmony and renewal amid inevitable decay.

Gameplay

Oasis Management

In Ever Oasis, the oasis functions as a customizable central hub that begins as a simple spring at the base of the Great Tree, gradually expanding into a bustling settlement as players develop its and . This growth transforms the initial barren area into a self-sustaining community, with facilities such as shops, farms, and inns constructed as Bloom Booths to support economic and social activities. Players access the build via the bottom screen to place these booths in available spaces, selecting locations that optimize traffic flow and functionality. As the oasis levels up—primarily through completing quests and establishing a variety of Bloom Booths—it unlocks additional , adds aesthetic elements like greenery and monuments, and strengthens protective features such as the rainbow barrier against external threats. Resource management is integral to maintaining and expanding the oasis, involving the collection of materials from external explorations to stock Bloom Booths and enable their operation. Residents, recruited by completing visitor quests during outings, are assigned to specific jobs at these facilities based on their individual preferences and skills, such as a Seedling suited for a fruit shop or bakery. This assignment generates income in the form of Dewadems, the in-game currency, while producing goods that attract more travelers and contribute to overall prosperity. Keeping booths well-stocked prevents downtime, boosts efficiency, and provides bonuses like increased player health and power, creating a feedback loop where successful management fuels further development. Social elements play a key role in oasis progression, with resident happiness directly influencing town growth and community vitality. Happiness is cultivated by fulfilling residents' personal needs through interactions and resource provision, as well as organizing events like festivals that enhance bonds and . Strong relationships among residents and with the player encourage expansion, as content inhabitants are more productive and likely to support new initiatives. The town's layout centers on areas like Plaza for communal gatherings, the Main Road connecting key facilities, and the Synthesis Tree for integrating synthesized items into daily operations, evolving from sparse setups to a interconnected, thriving .

Exploration and Combat

Exploration in Ever Oasis centers on navigating a vast overworld map dominated by arid deserts, interspersed with caves, temples, and occasional lush pockets like forests. Players control the protagonist alongside two AI-controlled companions, venturing out from the central oasis to gather materials, uncover hidden areas, and interact with travelers. The expands as is made, revealing new biomes such as the sandy expanses of Qarr Dunes, which serve as the initial exploration hub filled with cacti, sand waves, and scattered ruins. Companions play a crucial role in traversal, utilizing unique abilities like digging through sand piles, across gaps, or deploying protective barriers to shield against environmental hazards such as scorching heat or wind gusts. Combat unfolds in real-time action-RPG style, emphasizing fluid management and tactical positioning against Chaos-infected enemies that roam the and infest deeper areas. The can switch between four primary weapon types—sword for close-range , boomerang () for ranged throws and retrieval, wand for magical projectiles, and for precise ranged attacks—allowing adaptation to enemy patterns and distances. Battles involve chaining light and heavy attacks into combos, executing roll-dodges to evade assaults, and leveraging affinities, as many Chaos foes exhibit weaknesses to specific weapon types or companion skills, such as fire-based attacks against water-vulnerable targets. Party switching occurs seamlessly mid-fight, enabling players to revive fallen allies or call in specialized abilities, like area-of-effect blasts or bursts, to maintain momentum; however, poor timing often leads to quick defeats, rewarding calculated rather than aggressive play. Dungeon crawling forms the core of deeper exploration, with temples and caves featuring multi-room layouts packed with environmental puzzles, spike traps, and collapsing floors that demand companion-specific solutions—such as using a Nour race member's wind gust to clear sand blockades or a Miura's rolling form to navigate tight passages. These areas include hidden items beneath deceptive sand layers, uncoverable via abilities like Green Gale, which also aids in revealing puzzle hints through skill icons. Encounters escalate with tougher Chaos variants and culminate in boss fights against massive, multi-phase adversaries that exploit arena hazards and require weapon swaps to target weak points. Non-hostile creatures encountered during these delves, often resembling the game's anthropomorphic races, can be persuaded to join the oasis as residents after assistance in combat or puzzle resolution, adding their unique skills to future parties. Progression in and is tightly linked to resident-driven quests, which prompt ventures into map sections for fetch tasks or traveler rescues, gradually unveiling biomes and unlocking fast-travel points like Aqua Gates for healing and saves. Successful runs yield materials that briefly enhance oasis facilities, while leveling companions unlocks advanced and traversal tools, encouraging repeated forays into evolving threats. Nighttime heightens danger, spawning stronger enemies and altering paths with shifting sands.

Synthesis and Progression

In Ever Oasis, the synthesis system revolves around the Synthesis Tree, a central crafting hub accessed from the player's home oasis, where materials gathered from —such as monster drops and foraged items—are combined to create weapons, armor, tools, and consumables like healing vulneraries. Recipes for these items are progressively unlocked through resident expertise, as inviting and fulfilling requests from oasis inhabitants expands available options by revealing new crafting paths tied to their skills and stories. This mechanic emphasizes , requiring Dewadems as currency alongside specific ingredients, with greyed-out recipes indicating needed advancements in oasis growth or further expeditions. Character progression centers on the Tethu, who levels up primarily through gained from completing quests and engaging in battles, unlocking enhanced stats and access to diverse styles via weapon-specific skill trees. Tethu can equip various weapons like swords, wands, boomerangs (), or crossbows—excluding spears, hammers, and twin blades reserved for other races—each offering unique attack patterns and abilities, such as the wand's burrowing explosions, which evolve with level-based improvements in power and range. Companions, forming the three-member Triad party, similarly advance through shared , upgrading their inherent abilities like area-of-effect or item-finding boosts, allowing players to switch between them mid- for synergistic Triad attacks that combine individual skills for greater impact. These upgrades foster strategic party composition, with passive traits like attack power enhancements scaling alongside active arts that consume a special gauge. Inventory management supports customization through dedicated equipment slots for weapons, armor, and accessories, which provide targeted stat boosts such as increased attack, defense, or XP gain for the entire party. Players can mix and match gear for optimized builds, including cosmetic options for character appearances and oasis decorations, while excess materials are stored in a home chest to fuel ongoing synthesis. In the endgame, advanced synthesis yields rare items from high-level materials, like obsidian shards or ancient bones, enabling progression loops where crafted gear unlocks tougher dungeons, yielding even rarer drops to repeat the cycle and achieve maximum level 30 for Tethu and companions. This iterative process ties crafting directly to narrative closure, as stronger equipment facilitates confronting Chaos-infested labyrinths with multi-phase bosses requiring precise stat synergies.

Development

Conception and Design

Ever Oasis was conceived by director Koichi Ishii as a blend of action RPG elements from the Mana series with life-simulation mechanics inspired by Animal Crossing, aiming to create a "waterfront adventure" set in a vast desert environment. The core idea stemmed from Ishii's trip to Egypt a decade prior, which sparked the theme of protecting and nurturing an oasis amid desolation, shifting focus from individual character progression to communal guardianship of a vital water source. This vision emphasized a "Egyptian fantasy" world called Vistrahda, where ancient oases had withered due to fading spiritual powers, prompting players to revive nature through exploration and alliance-building. Central to the design were pillars like the oasis as an evolving hub for interaction, where recruited allies operate Bloom Booths to foster growth and , drawing on life-sim ideals of shared living. Monster recruitment mechanics were inspired by , allowing players to befriend and command creatures for dungeon delving and oasis defense, while nature themes underscored environmental restoration and the interplay between water, sand, and spirits. was prioritized to evoke emotional , with the oasis serving as a dynamic base that reflects player choices in ally management and resource allocation. Ishii's influences included his prior work on Square Enix titles like Final Fantasy and the series, which informed the RPG combat and narrative depth, alongside Grezzo's experience remastering The Legend of Zelda games for , shaping the action-adventure hybrid structure. Early prototypes on hardware tested the scale of town-building against exploration demands, ensuring fluid party-based combat with up to three allies and intuitive oasis expansion without overwhelming the portable platform's capabilities. Ishii began development by sketching world maps and defining foundational rules—such as elemental compositions, racial dynamics, and climatic shifts—to unify the game's mechanics and lore.

Production and Team

Grezzo, a Tokyo-based studio founded in 2006, handled the full development of Ever Oasis in close collaboration with Nintendo, incorporating feedback from the publisher's staff to refine controls, visuals, and gameplay feel in line with established Nintendo design principles. Koichi Ishii, Grezzo's president and the creator of Square Enix's Mana series, served as producer and director, drawing on his experience with action RPGs to guide the project's vision. Character designs were led by Yoshinori Shizuma, a veteran anime and manga artist, while concept artists Masaki Yasuda and Yumi Kikuoka contributed detailed illustrations for environments, items, and inhabitants, ensuring a cohesive Egyptian-inspired fantasy world. Key technical challenges centered on adapting real-time party-based combat and dynamic town-building mechanics to the hardware, including optimization for rendering expansive desert landscapes and bustling oasis settlements without significant performance dips. The synthesis system presented additional hurdles, requiring the implementation of an extensive array of recipes—spanning weapons, armor, accessories, and consumables—derived from materials gathered during exploration, to support player progression and customization. These elements demanded iterative adjustments to maintain fluid gameplay on the portable console's limitations. Art production emphasized hand-drawn concept artwork to capture the game's diverse biomes, from serene oases to chaotic desert ruins, with monsters and creatures designed to evoke a sense of wonder and threat through varied tribal aesthetics and environmental integration. The soundtrack, composed by Sebastian Schwartz under Ishii's sound production oversight, contrasted peaceful, melodic tracks evoking the tranquility of oasis life with intense, rhythmic compositions underscoring tense battles against desert foes, amplifying the narrative's themes of harmony versus corruption. Development progressed through milestones such as the game's reveal at , where playable demos highlighted core mechanics, followed by internal testing to achieve balance between oasis management simulation and action RPG exploration. Final stages involved polishing stereoscopic 3D compatibility to enhance depth in dungeon puzzles and open-world traversal, ensuring the title fully leveraged the family systems' capabilities upon its 2017 launch.
