Development process

The development of Football Manager 2022 was led by , the London-based studio under , with studio director overseeing the project. The team, which had grown to over 230 members by 2021, adopted a restructured production approach following the challenges of the previous title, incorporating agile methodologies with weekly sprints and cross-disciplinary "feature pods" comprising engineers, artists, designers, and producers to streamline collaboration and integration. Development began immediately after the release of Football Manager 2021 on November 24, 2020, and continued through 2021, culminating in the game's completion ahead of its November 8, 2021, launch. The process centered on updating the game's extensive database to reflect the 2021-22 football season, including player transfers, form, and league structures, ensuring alignment with real-world events at the start of each new career save. A primary challenge involved integrating vast real-world data, gathered by over 1,300 volunteer researchers worldwide who act as the game's data scouts, compiling information on players, clubs, and competitions. This was complemented by official partnerships, such as the licensing agreement with the (EFL) for accurate representation of its 72 clubs across the Sky Bet Championship, League One, and League Two. The further complicated efforts, affecting team health, remote workflows, and scheduling, though the studio avoided incorporating pandemic elements like empty stadiums into the core to maintain pre-crisis realism. Key innovations included enhancements to the AI governing player interactions, improving realism in dynamics like and relationships, alongside an expanded database that surpassed prior entries through millions of annual attribute adjustments and updates by the . This iterative process, informed by the agile framework, allowed for more responsive development and a larger, more detailed environment.

Gameplay

Core mechanics

Football Manager 2022 centers on a detailed where players assume the role of a football club manager, overseeing key operational aspects including player transfers, regimens, financial budgeting, and squad selection within a of . Transfers involve and negotiating deals for new signings or sales to strengthen the team while adhering to transfer windows and wage structures, often requiring careful financial planning to maintain club stability and comply with regulatory limits like Financial Fair Play. Training modules allow customization of individual and group sessions to enhance player fitness, skills, and tactical familiarity, directly impacting match performance and injury risk. Squad selection occurs pre-match, factoring in player condition, morale, and positional requirements to form optimal lineups and benches across domestic and international competitions. The game's match engine provides a 3D visualization of fixtures, rendering realistic player animations, ball trajectories, and atmospheres for an immersive viewing experience in various camera angles, from wide overviews to action. During matches, real-time tactical adjustments enable shifts in formation, mentality, or pressing intensity to counter unfolding events, with the engine calculating outcomes based on predefined player roles—such as complete forward or deep-lying playmaker—that define individual responsibilities like positioning and . Opposition analysis tools, including pre-match reports and in-game highlights, offer insights into rival strengths and weaknesses, allowing managers to exploit gaps through targeted instructions. This system emphasizes strategic depth, where tactical cohesion and player execution determine results in simulated 90-minute games. Career mode forms the progression backbone, enabling multi-season narratives where managers guide clubs through league hierarchies, pursuing promotions via playoff victories or consistent standings while risking relegation based on poor results and board expectations. Advancements can unlock international management opportunities, such as leading national teams in qualifiers and major tournaments like the , alongside club achievements in cups and continental events. Dynamic elements like youth academy graduates and contract renewals drive long-term growth, with success measured by trophies, reputation gains, and career milestones over potentially decades. The simulation draws from an expansive database encompassing over 130 playable leagues across 53 countries, capturing real-world structures from top-tier divisions like the to lower pyramids in nations such as and . Player attributes, rated on a 1-20 scale, quantify abilities in categories like pace for speed, finishing for goal-scoring precision, and mentality for composure under pressure, informing , development, and on-pitch simulations. These ratings, combined with hidden traits like determination, create nuanced player profiles exceeding 500,000 individuals.

New features

Football Manager 2022 introduced the , a centralized tool accessible via a new sidebar tab, designed to provide managers with comprehensive performance insights to refine tactics and strategies. This feature aggregates data from matches and training sessions, featuring visualizations such as overall match momentum graphs that track team control over time, pass networks illustrating player connections and ball movement patterns, and defensive breakdowns highlighting vulnerabilities in opponent setups or own team structures. By integrating (xG) metrics and other statistical overlays, the Data Hub enables data-driven decision-making, allowing users to compare team performance against benchmarks and adjust formations accordingly. A significant interaction upgrade came in the form of the new staff meeting system, which facilitates deeper with backroom personnel through structured weekly dialogues covering topics like coaching assignments, player development, staffing needs, and squad planning. These meetings feature branching conversation options, enabling dynamic discussions on team performance, individual player morale, tactical strategies, and long-term club goals, thereby simulating real-world managerial oversight and fostering more immersive staff relationships. Tactical innovations in Football Manager 2022 included the addition of the wide centre-back role, a new positional duty for defenders in the DCL or DCR slots that blends central defending with wide support, akin to a full-back's contributions but anchored in the backline to suit modern three- or five-at-the-back formations. This role allows centre-backs to overlap into midfield areas during possession while maintaining defensive width, enhancing fluidity in systems like 3-5-2 or 5-2-1-2 without exposing the core defense. Complementing this, the game revamped its pressing mechanics with a brand-new system incorporating triggers tied to the line of engagement and defensive line settings, which more realistically simulates team-wide pressure intensity and accuracy while factoring in player stamina depletion for sustained traps. These changes build upon the core match engine by introducing greater nuance to high-pressing styles, affecting both AI and user-controlled teams. Scouting received substantial enhancements in Football Manager 2022, with an overhauled package emphasizing global recruitment through refined and predictive tools. Improvements include more accurate youth intake projections based on regional talent pools and facility investments, alongside data-driven talent identification that leverages the for reports on opposition players and prospects. This system streamlines international searches by prioritizing high-potential targets via enhanced filters and comparisons, altering transfer dynamics with a revamped player value model that better reflects market realism and negotiation leverage.
