George VI was born at Sandringham House in Norfolk, England, as the second son of King George V and Queen Mary. He was named Albert Frederick Arthur George and was known as 'Bertie' to his family and close friends.
Naval and Military Service

Albert attended naval college and served in the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force during the First World War, including participating in the Battle of Jutland. This period shaped his early life and military career.
