Goon Affiliated is the fourth studio album by American rapper Plies.[1] It was released on June 8, 2010, by Big Gates Records, Slip-n-Slide Records and Atlantic Records.

Background

[edit]

Goon Affiliated was recorded between the fall of 2009 and the spring of 2010, set to be released just six months after Plies' previous album, Da Realist. As early as April 2009, Plies began assembling his "dream team" roster of rappers and producers for the project, immediately after the release of his single "Plenty Money".[2] Plies explained that having his brother with him during the recording of the album was very important.[3]

In an August 2009 interview with MTV.com,[3] Plies discussed the meaning behind the track "First 48":

"I got a song right now called 'First 48,' " the Florida native revealed. "It's wrapped around the whole TV series 'The First 48 Hours.' I'm telling you on the record: 'Everybody is a goon until they catch a case/ When the detectives get to the talking/ All that gangsta sh-- fades away/ The first 10 minutes, dog, you started off straight/ Detective applied a little pressure, you turn around and break.' That whole situation for me, that intro, I'm sitting here watching TV, and I didn't know it was that many unreal dudes still left in the streets," he continued. "I just focused on that situation. That's one of them records on my album I call 'choir rehearsal.' I know everybody is gonna sing it every time I perform it."

Additionally, Plies explained the title of the album:

"Goon Affiliated, I had the pleasure of having my brother home for this album," he told us of the LP's title while parked on his tour bus in ATL. "He actually came up with the title of this album. The three previous albums, 'real' was incorporated into the album title. For me, we felt Goon Affiliated wasn't too gangsta, wasn't too soft. It was right in the middle. Kids in the suburbs could have goon friends and be goon affiliated. You could be a street cat and not call yourself a 'goon' but have goon homeboys and be goon affiliated. Or you could be a goon and be goon affiliated. It's a whole diverse situation for me."[3]

The song "Look Like", which features rap verses from Young Jeezy & Fabolous is the first song on any of Plies' albums to feature other rappers.[4]

Promotion

[edit]

In June 2009, Plies allegedly threw $12 into a concert crowd in Atlanta, Georgia, in promotion of Goon Affiliated, as he performed his final single before Goon Affiliated, "Plenty Money".[5] Later that month, Plies released his track "Becky". In April 2010, Plies announced his "Goon Affiliated 25 Day Giveaway Contest". Fans called a toll-free hotline from May 1 to May 25, 2010, and if Plies picked up the phone, the caller won a prize. Plies pledged to give away iPads, jewelry from his personal collection, as well as scholarships for college, health care payments, mortgage payments, and other big-ticket items.[6]

Singles

[edit]

"Becky", the first official single was released in June 2009 and peaked at number 32 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart[7] and number 14 on the Hot Rap Tracks chart,[7] The second single was "She Got It Made", featuring Bei Maejor. It was released on March 5, 2010. The first promotional single was "Medicine", featuring Keri Hilson. It peaked at number 47 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and number 21 on the Hot Rap Tracks. This track didn't make the final product.

Goon Affiliated is the fourth studio by American rapper Plies, consisting of 15 tracks that blend thugged-out Southern hip-hop with R&B influences. Released on June 8, 2010, through Big Gates Records, , and , the album explores themes of street loyalty, pride, and explicit sexual content, often centered on Plies' concept of "goons" as tough, reliable associates from his hometown. Notable tracks include the lead single "," an explicit anthem produced by , and "Look Like" featuring Young Jeezy and , alongside other guest appearances from on "Kitty Kitty" and Fella on "Awesome." Upon its release, Goon Affiliated debuted at number five on the US chart, moving 56,300 copies in its first week according to Nielsen SoundScan. The album garnered mixed critical reception, with praise for its high-energy beats and humorous, raunchy delivery in tracks like "Goonette" and "Rob Myself," but criticism for repetitive lyrics and overall lack of substance.

Background and development

Concept and inspiration

The album title Goon Affiliated derives from Plies' longstanding self-identification with "goons," a term he uses to describe loyal, street-tough individuals shaped by the hardships of hood life in his hometown of Fort Myers, Florida. Plies has explained that this affiliation stems directly from his upbringing in such environments, where survival instincts and unwavering solidarity defined daily existence. His brother and manager, Big Gates, reinforced this by noting that the "goon" narrative captures universal hood experiences, attracting both those immersed in street "horror" and outsiders who embrace its authenticity through Plies' music. The project's inspiration emerged amid Plies' accelerated career momentum, marking his fourth studio album in under three years following the December 2008 release of . This quick succession allowed Plies to pivot back toward unfiltered street rap, drawing from personal and familial influences like Big Gates—a and former whose street credibility and guidance shaped Plies' artistic direction. Plies emphasized prioritizing genuine storytelling and authenticity in his lyrics, stating that true rap lies in relatable truths rather than embellished wordplay. Plies positioned Goon Affiliated as a deliberate return to his core fanbase by prioritizing hood-rooted themes that balanced grit with accessibility, avoiding extremes of overt gangsta posturing or softened commercialism. In pre-release discussions, he described the title's appeal as "right in the middle," enabling suburban listeners to affiliate through friendships while resonating with street audiences and dedicated "goons" alike. This focus on inclusivity while maintaining raw honesty aimed to reconnect with supporters from his mixtape era onward. To visually and narratively introduce the "goon" ethos, Plies participated in a November 2009 photo shoot that captured his rugged persona and launched a webisode series, Growing Up Goon Affiliated, featuring personal stories with Big Gates to highlight their shared background.

Recording process

The recording sessions for Goon Affiliated took place over approximately six months, from fall 2009 through spring 2010, following the release of Plies' previous album in December 2008. This compressed timeline allowed for a swift follow-up project amid Plies' rising profile with . Primary recording occurred at Chalice Recording Studio in , , with additional sessions at D2 Music Studios and Hot Beats Recording Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, Deep Productions Studio in , and Patchwerk Studios in Atlanta. Key producers included , who handled the track "" with its polished, radio-friendly sound; J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, contributing atmospheric beats including to "She Got It Made"; and , who provided trap-influenced production on tracks like "Awesome" and "Bruh Bruh," emphasizing heavy 808 bass and street-oriented rhythms. Guest features were integrated during collaborative sessions, with recording his vocals for the bonus track "Goonette," adding signature hooks, and Fella contributing to "Awesome" and "Chirpin'," enhancing the album's regional flavor through joint studio work. Plies maintained a hands-on role throughout, personally writing all his lyrics to ensure authenticity and alignment with his "goon" persona, drawing directly from personal experiences without ghostwriters.

Composition

Musical style

Goon Affiliated exemplifies Southern hip-hop and , infused with prominent trap and elements that define the 2010s Florida rap landscape. The album's sound draws from the region's raw, street-level energy, blending aggressive rhythms with a polished edge suitable for both underground and mainstream audiences. Production on the record emphasizes dramatic, glitzy beats characterized by synth-heavy arrangements, booming 808 bass lines, and rapid patterns that drive the momentum. Notable contributions include the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League's orchestral flourishes on "Rob Myself," which add cinematic depth to the track's intense atmosphere. Other highlights feature the bouncy, piano-led beat on "," crafted by for a club-ready vibe, and the forceful synth assaults on "Flaw," courtesy of Big Jones, underscoring the album's confrontational tone. These elements create a cohesive yet varied sonic palette, with repetitive, anthemic hooks optimized for replay in high-energy settings. The overall runtime clocks in at 55 minutes across 15 tracks, balancing aggression with accessibility. Relative to Plies' prior release Definition of Real, Goon Affiliated marks a pivot to harder-edged, less melodic production, amplifying gritty realism at the expense of broader pop appeals. This evolution reinforces the album's commitment to unfiltered Southern authenticity, prioritizing heavy percussion and minimalistic arrangements over crossover-friendly ballads.

Lyrical themes

The lyrical themes in Goon Affiliated center on the celebration of "goon" loyalty, portraying it as an adherence to a street code that emphasizes and distrust of fake friends, often referred to derogatorily as "pussy niggas." In tracks like "Flaw," Plies critiques disloyal associates who under pressure, reinforcing the value of unwavering among true allies. Similarly, "Rob Myself" humorously explores by fantasizing about robbing oneself as the ultimate target due to accumulated wealth, underscoring a where from others is anticipated but personal integrity remains paramount. Hood life narratives dominate the album, depicting the harsh realities of , , and in urban environments. "Get My Niggas Out" conveys for incarcerated friends, with Plies expressing stress over funding their legal defenses and vowing support to free them from jail, highlighting the ongoing toll of street involvement. "Bruh Bruh" delves into interpersonal conflicts and slang-laden exchanges that reflect everyday tensions and resolutions within the community, using repetitive phrasing to mimic authentic . These stories prioritize raw over redemption, painting a consistent picture of a unforgiving world. Gender dynamics in the lyrics blend objectification with boasts of empowerment and romantic loyalty, often delivered through explicit language. "Goonette" objectifies women by framing them as extensions of the goon lifestyle—loyal female counterparts who share in criminal exploits, such as receiving a pink ski mask as a gift—while also portraying a tender, spoiling relationship. Tracks like "She Got It Made" mix misogynistic undertones with self-aggrandizing claims of providing luxury, such as five-star suites, to deserving partners. This duality extends to broader sexual bravado, as seen in "Good Dick," where Plies positions himself as dominant in intimate encounters. Humor and bravado infuse the album's delivery, with Plies' mumbled, surly style adding ribald, lowbrow jokes that contrast heavier street tales. In "Awesome," he employs playful mockery, targeting New Yorkers and white women with exaggerated Florida-centric boasts, turning bravado into comedic exaggeration. "" amplifies this through absurd, repetitive chants that transform explicit content into awkward comedy. Overall, the tone is unapologetically aggressive, lacking and differing from more vulnerable expressions in Plies' prior work, as it prioritizes bold, surface-level assertions of toughness and indulgence.

Additionally, behind-the-scenes footage from a November 2009 photo shoot highlighted goon imagery, with Plies posing in rugged, street-oriented setups to emphasize the album's themes of loyalty and toughness.
