History

Origins in Hallmark Media

Hallmark Cards entered the media landscape in 1991 by forming Crown Media Inc., a subsidiary aimed at acquiring cable television systems and programming assets, marking the company's initial foray into broadcasting beyond its core greeting card business. In 1998, Crown Media acquired a 22.5 percent stake in Odyssey Holdings, the operator of the Odyssey Network, a cable channel with religious programming roots. Odyssey originated from the 1992 merger of the American Christian Television System (ACTS), launched in 1984, and the Vision Interfaith Satellite Network (VISN), established in 1988 by the National Interfaith Cable Coalition to provide uplifting, faith-based content across denominations. By 2001, following Crown Media's full acquisition and corporate reorganization, Odyssey rebranded as the Hallmark Channel, shifting from its explicit faith-based focus to broader family-oriented entertainment while retaining subtle inspirational elements, such as adaptations of evangelical novels like the "Love Comes Softly" series. This evolution laid the groundwork for Hallmark's media portfolio diversification, as the grew into a powerhouse for original programming by the mid-2010s. The network's success, including the production of over 30 original movies annually—many centered on romance and holiday themes—created an abundance of content that exceeded the channel's capacity to air without diluting its core identity. To address this, Crown Media launched a second targeted network in by rebranding the Hallmark Movie Channel as Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, dedicating it to genre-specific mystery dramas and acquired series, which allowed for better utilization of non-romance content like the "" franchise. By 2016–2017, internal strategies at Crown Media focused on further expansion to repurpose dramatic content from its growing library, avoiding any overlap that could undermine the Hallmark Channel's emphasis on uplifting romances. This approach mirrored the niche-targeting pattern established with the rebrand, culminating in the October 2017 launch of Hallmark Drama as the third network in the portfolio, spotlighting timeless dramatic movies and series for family audiences.

Development and Expansion (2017–2023)

Hallmark Drama, the precursor to Hallmark Family, soft-launched on October 1, 2017, as the third linear cable network in Crown Media Family Networks' portfolio, initially airing acquired dramas and classic titles from the Hallmark library to target family audiences seeking uplifting storytelling. The rollout began with carriage on select providers, including Layer3 TV, and expanded to nearly 20 million homes by 2019 through strategic distribution agreements that leveraged the established popularity of sister networks and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries. Distribution expanded rapidly in the following years, surpassing 42 million homes by August 2020 amid ongoing carriage renewals with cooperatives like the National Cable Television Cooperative (NCTC), which secured multiyear access for members to Hallmark Drama alongside its siblings. Viewership trends showed steady growth, particularly benefiting from during Hallmark Channel's annual holiday programming surges that drew broader viewership to the ecosystem. Content strategy shifted from heavy reliance on drama reruns to curated themed blocks, including -oriented evenings featuring inspirational series and movies, while introducing limited originals like the short-form holiday competition "Christmas Cookie Countdown" in 2019 to test audience engagement. The posed significant challenges from 2020 to 2021, prompting Crown Media—rebranded as in August 2022—to suspend on-location production for new content in March 2020, which forced greater dependence on the existing library of acquired and archived dramas to maintain scheduling amid industry-wide shutdowns. Adaptations included enhanced use of streaming via the Hallmark TV app for authenticated subscribers, helping sustain accessibility during lockdowns. By 2022, the network ventured into international syndication through Hallmark Media International, distributing select programming to markets in and to broaden its global footprint. Pre-rebrand performance solidified by 2023, with Hallmark Drama maintaining steady viewership in its niche family audience, underscoring its role in the portfolio's overall success and paving the way for strategic evolution. In February 2024, Hallmark Drama rebranded as Hallmark Family to better reflect its focus on timeless, family-oriented storytelling centered around themes of , , and .
