Key Information
Club career
[edit]Early career
[edit]Pantemis started playing football for AS Pierrefonds at the age of four and later played for Lakeshore SC before joining the Montreal Impact's academy system in 2014.[4][5]
FC Montreal
[edit]In 2016 Pantemis joined FC Montreal, the reserve team of the Montreal Impact in the United Soccer League. He made his professional debut on May 2, 2016, in a 1–0 defeat to Orlando City II, and also featured in a 2–1 defeat to Bethlehem Steel on May 15, 2016.[6] He played two games for FC Montreal after tearing his LCL in June 2016, and was still injured when the club ceased operations after the 2016 season, leaving him unattached for until he signed with the Impact.[7]
Montreal Impact / CF Montréal
[edit]After recovering from his LCL injury, Pantemis would train with Serie A club Bologna in September 2017,[8][9] and would sign a first team contract with Montreal Impact in November 2017.[10] He made his competitive debut for the Impact on July 24, 2019, in a Canadian Championship match against York9 with the Impact winning 1-0.[11]
On March 6, 2020, Pantemis was sent on loan to Canadian Premier League side Valour FC, reuniting with his former Canada U20 coach Rob Gale.[12] He made his debut for Valour on August 16 against Cavalry FC.[13]
After the 2022 MLS season, where Pantemis split starting duties with Sebastian Breza, his option was initially declined by CF Montréal.[14] Pantemis then signed new one-year deal with the club, with an options for 2024 and 2025.[15] Upon completion of the 2023 Season, CF Montréal would announce that they would not pick up Pantemis' contract for 2024, ending his time with the club.[16]
Pantemis signed with the Portland Timbers on January 5, 2024.[17]
International career
[edit]Youth
[edit]Pantemis was a part of Canada's U-20 program and made his start in a 2–1 victory over England.[4] In May 2018, Pantemis was named to Canada's under-21 squad for the 2018 Toulon Tournament.[18] In February 2020 Pantemis was named to the provisional roster for the Canadian U-23 team ahead of the 2020 CONCACAF Men's Olympic Qualifying Championship.[19] He was named to the final squad on March 10, 2021.[20]
Senior
[edit]In June 2017, he was called up to the Canadian senior national team for a friendly against Curaçao, but did not appear. He was subsequently called up for a friendly against Jamaica in September of that year.[4]
In November 2022, Pantemis was named to Canada's squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.[21]
In January 2026, he was called up to Canada for a training camp and friendly against Guatemala, which he started, however, as it was designated a B-level friendly, it did not count as an official senior cap.[22]
Personal life
[edit]Pantemis was born in Canada and is of Greek descent.[23] He holds a Greek passport.[3]

Youth and academy career
James Pantemis was born on February 21, 1997, in Montréal, Québec, Canada, to parents Nick and Kelly Pantemis, both of whom were also born in the city. Growing up in the Kirkland area of Montréal, he was exposed to multiple sports from a young age, including soccer and hockey.[10] Pantemis began organized soccer at age four with AS Pierrefonds, a local club in Montréal, where he initially played as an outfield player before developing a passion for goalkeeping a few years later.[10][12] He continued his youth development with Lakeshore SC, progressing through their youth ranks up to the U9 level.[3][13] In 2014, at age 17, Pantemis joined the CF Montréal academy (then known as the Montreal Impact academy) from Lakeshore SC, entering directly into the U-18 team and focusing on goalkeeping fundamentals through intensive training.[3][14][12] He remained with the academy program until 2016, when he transitioned to the club's reserve team, FC Montréal, in the USL.[3][13]FC Montréal (reserve team)
Pantemis signed his first professional contract with FC Montréal's reserve affiliate, FC Montréal, in the United Soccer League (USL) in early 2016 at the age of 18. The club announced the USL deal on March 1, alongside other academy products, positioning him as part of the team's goalkeeping options for the season.[15] He made his professional debut on May 1, 2016, starting in a 0–1 away loss to Orlando City B at the Titan Soccer Complex, where he played the full 90 minutes and recorded two saves.[16] His second and final appearance of the season came on May 15, 2016, in a 1–2 defeat at Bethlehem Steel FC, again completing the full match but failing to keep a clean sheet.[17] Later that June, Pantemis suffered an LCL tear, limiting him to just two outings in 2016 with three goals conceded overall and no shutouts.[4] Following his recovery from injury, Pantemis began integrating with the first team during the 2017 preseason, training regularly in a professional environment to develop further as a backup goalkeeper without making senior appearances at that stage.[3] This period marked a key step in his progression, blending reserve-level experience with higher-level preparation. On November 13, 2017, he secured a homegrown contract with CF Montréal's first team, shifting his focus toward MLS integration while the reserve side continued in the USL through 2018.[18] Over his time with FC Montréal, Pantemis appeared in two USL matches, playing 180 minutes and maintaining a career save percentage in those games of approximately 33% based on shots faced. With the reserve team's operations concluding after the 2018 season, Pantemis's reserve tenure ended as he established himself within the senior squad.[19]CF Montréal (first team)
Pantemis signed a homegrown player contract with CF Montréal on November 13, 2017, ahead of the 2018 Major League Soccer season, becoming the third goalkeeper on the roster behind starters Evan Bush and Clément Diop.[18][20] He spent his initial years primarily as a backup, making his first competitive appearance for the senior team on July 24, 2019, in the Canadian Championship against York9 FC, where Montréal secured a 1–0 victory with Pantemis keeping a clean sheet. Pantemis made his MLS debut on October 14, 2020, starting in a 2–3 loss to the New England Revolution, where he recorded six saves on nine shots faced for a 66.7% save percentage.[21] He went on to make two more regular-season appearances that year, totaling three starts with seven goals conceded and no clean sheets, as the team navigated a challenging pandemic-shortened season.[22] In March 2020, Pantemis was loaned to Valour FC of the Canadian Premier League until September, where he made 7 appearances.[4][5] The 2021 season marked Pantemis's breakout at the senior level, as he stepped in for the injured Maxime Crépeau and earned 18 starts across 1,620 minutes, conceding 25 goals while posting three clean sheets and a 69.1% save rate on 81 shots faced.[23] His performances were instrumental in CF Montréal's run to the Canadian Championship final, where he started in the semifinal victory over HFX Wanderers FC (5–0 aggregate) before the team fell 1–0 to Forge FC in the decisive leg. On January 25, 2021, prior to the season, Pantemis signed a contract extension through 2022, with a club option for 2023.[24] In 2022, Pantemis appeared in 11 regular-season matches (all starts), recording four clean sheets and 12 goals against over 990 minutes, with a 70.3% save percentage that contributed to CF Montréal's strong campaign, finishing second in the Eastern Conference with 65 points.[22] He reclaimed the starting role late in the season amid competition from Crépeau and started both MLS Cup Playoff games that year, keeping a clean sheet in the 2–0 first-round win over Orlando City SC before the team fell 1–3 to New York City FC in the conference semifinals.[25][26][27] On December 16, 2022, Pantemis agreed to a new deal for the 2023 season, including club options for 2024 and 2025.[14] Pantemis's 2023 season was limited to two appearances (173 minutes) due to a shoulder injury suffered in the opener against Inter Miami CF, during which he conceded five goals with a 58.3% save rate and no clean sheets.[22] Following the season, CF Montréal declined to exercise his contract options, allowing him to depart as a free agent after six professional seasons with the club.[28] Over his time with the first team, Pantemis made 34 regular-season MLS appearances (all starts), recording seven clean sheets, allowing 51 goals, and achieving an average save percentage of approximately 69.5%.[29]Portland Timbers
Pantemis joined the Portland Timbers as a free transfer on January 5, 2024, signing a contract through the end of the 2025 MLS season with a club option for 2026. He was initially positioned as the backup goalkeeper behind Maxime Crépeau, who had arrived earlier in the offseason, providing depth in a crowded netminder room that also included Trey Muse.[6][30] During the 2024 season, Pantemis featured in 15 appearances (14 starts), securing 5 clean sheets across these outings.[1][29] Pantemis encountered integration hurdles upon arrival, particularly in vying for minutes against incumbent Aljaž Ivačič during the early months before Crépeau's full establishment and Ivačič's subsequent departure from the club. Despite these challenges, his reliability contributed to the Timbers' efforts in mounting a late push toward the Western Conference playoffs, helping stabilize the defense amid roster flux.[31] As of November 13, 2025, Pantemis has solidified his role in the 2025 campaign, appearing in 22 MLS matches for a total of 1,980 minutes played, while earning 4 clean sheets and conceding 31 goals. His performance metrics include an 80% save percentage and an average rating of 7.25, highlighted by his proficiency in penalty situations where he has saved 3 out of 6 attempts. By mid-season, he had emerged as the primary starter, underscoring his growing impact on the squad. His current market value stands at €800k, as assessed by Transfermarkt.[32]International career
Youth international career
Pantemis began his international career at the youth level with a call-up to the Canada U-15 national team in 2012, at the age of 15.[33] He made his debut in the Canadian youth program that same year under coach Michael Findlay, participating in development camps focused on goalkeeping fundamentals and team integration.[10] Progressing through the ranks, Pantemis joined Canada U-20 training camps and featured in friendlies, including a 2-1 victory over England in March 2016, where he contributed to the defensive effort as the primary goalkeeper.[4] However, an injury sidelined him from the 2017 CONCACAF Men's Under-20 Championship, preventing participation in the regional tournament despite prior preparations.[10][34] In 2018, Pantemis earned a spot on the Canada U-21 squad for the Maurice Revello Tournament in France, serving as one of the goalkeepers in the 20-man roster.[35] During the competition, he received the 2018 Allstate Canadian National Teams Good Hands Award for an athletic save in a match against Japan, highlighting his shot-stopping ability in a high-profile youth event.[36] Pantemis advanced to the U-23 level in early 2020, when he was named to Canada's provisional roster for the postponed CONCACAF Men's Olympic Qualifying Championship.[10] In the rescheduled 2021 tournament in Mexico, he started all four matches for the team, logging 360 minutes and securing clean sheets in the 3–0 win over El Salvador and the 0–0 draw with Haiti during the group stage, followed by a 1–1 draw against Honduras, before a 0–2 semifinal loss to Mexico.[37][38] Overall, Pantemis recorded eight appearances across Canada's U-20 and U-23 teams, including four starts in the 2021 Concacaf Men's Olympic Qualifying Championship and appearances in U-20 friendlies such as the 2016 match against England, marking key development milestones in his youth international progression.[1]Senior international career
Pantemis received his first call-up to the Canadian senior national team in June 2017 for a friendly match against Curaçao, where he served as an unused substitute.[33] He earned subsequent call-ups later that year, including for a September friendly against Jamaica, again remaining on the bench without making an appearance.[1] These early inclusions highlighted his potential as a young goalkeeper, though he did not feature in any matches during his initial senior team exposures. Pantemis continued to be selected for senior camps in 2019, joining the squad for the Concacaf Nations League matches against Cuba in September, where he again did not play.[33] His involvement grew in 2021, as he was named to the provisional roster for the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup but was unable to join the final squad due to club commitments with CF Montréal.[39] Later that year, he served as a backup goalkeeper during several FIFA World Cup qualifiers, including matches against Mexico and Jamaica in October, contributing to training sessions amid strong competition from Milan Borjan and Maxime Crépeau.[40] Pantemis remained part of the depth options through the 2021-22 qualification campaign, helping Canada secure first place in CONCACAF and qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.[10] In November 2022, Pantemis was selected as the third goalkeeper for Canada's historic 2022 FIFA World Cup squad in Qatar, marking the nation's return to the tournament after 36 years; he did not appear in any of the three group stage matches, with Borjan starting all games. He participated in a November 2022 training camp in Bahrain ahead of the World Cup and a January 2023 camp, continuing his role in team preparations without earning playing time.[41][42][43] Under new head coach Jesse Marsch, Pantemis returned to the senior squad in 2025, included in the preliminary roster for the CONCACAF Nations League finals in February and ultimately named to the 23-man roster as a backup goalkeeper.[44][45] He received another call-up in September 2025 for friendlies against Australia and Colombia in October, serving as depth behind Crépeau and Dayne St. Clair.[46] As of November 13, 2025, Pantemis has accumulated over 15 senior call-ups but remains uncapped at the international level, valued for his contributions in training and as a reliable third-choice option in a competitive goalkeeper pool.[11]Personal life
Family and background
James Pantemis was born on February 21, 1997, in Kirkland, a suburb of Montréal, Québec, Canada, where he was raised.[8] His father, Nick Pantemis, and mother, Kelly Pantemis, are both natives of Montréal, providing a stable upbringing in the city's West Island region.[10][47] From an early age, Pantemis was immersed in athletics, starting to play soccer at age four with AS Pierrefonds while also participating in hockey, activities that shaped his development in a household emphasizing physical activity and discipline.[10] His family played a supportive role during his youth academy years, attending matches and encouraging his transition to professional opportunities, much like their prioritization of his education alongside soccer commitments. Pantemis balanced his soccer career with education, graduating with a bachelor's degree in international commerce from Southern New Hampshire University in 2021.[48] As of late 2024, Pantemis remains unmarried with no children, focusing on his professional career following his transfer to the Portland Timbers.[47] His family's Greek heritage has influenced his personal background, though details are explored further in relation to cultural aspects.[10]Heritage and languages
Pantemis is of Greek descent through his family, with both of his parents, Nick and Kelly, born in Montréal.[10][49] He holds dual citizenship in Canada and Greece, including a Greek passport that provides flexibility for potential international career opportunities in European leagues.[50] As a native of Québec, Pantemis is fluent in English and French, the latter being his regional primary language from upbringing in Montréal.[10] He is also proficient in Greek, which he learned through familial influences, reflecting his cultural ties to his heritage.[10] Pantemis has been represented by Axia Sports Management, an agency that has assisted in his transitions within Major League Soccer, including his move to the Portland Timbers.[8][49]Career statistics
