The piandao (片刀) is a type of Chinese sabre (dao) used during the late Ming dynasty and through the Qing dynasty. A curved[1] dao meant for slashing and draw-cutting, it bore a strong resemblance to the Persian shamshir.[2] A fairly uncommon weapon, it was generally used by skirmishers in conjunction with a shield.

Piandao is a supporting character in the American animated television series Avatar: The Last Airbender, depicted as a non-bending master swordsman, bladesmith, and calligrapher from the Fire Nation.[1] A secretive member of the Order of the White Lotus, he mentors Sokka—a Water Tribe warrior and strategist—by teaching him advanced swordsmanship techniques, including the creation and use of a custom "space sword," while emphasizing discipline, creativity, and balance in combat.[2] His training regimen incorporates diverse arts like calligraphy and painting to hone mental focus, underscoring his philosophy that the way of the sword transcends national or elemental boundaries.[1]
Introduced in the third season episode "Sokka's Master," Piandao resides in a fortified estate adorned with subtle White Lotus symbols, reflecting his hidden allegiance to the society dedicated to preserving knowledge and balance.[3] Voiced by actor Robert Patrick, the character also trained Prince Zuko in swordsmanship during his youth, as shown in the series, highlighting Piandao's influence on key figures across the Fire Nation.[3] His design draws inspiration from Sifu Kisu, the show's real-world martial arts choreographer, incorporating authentic sword forms to blend Eastern martial traditions with the series' fictional world-building.[3]
In the series finale, "Sozin's Comet, Part 4: The Phoenix King," Piandao fights alongside Iroh and other White Lotus members in the liberation of Ba Sing Se from Fire Nation forces, contributing to the effort to end the Hundred Year War.[4] This role cements his status as a wise, principled warrior who rejects blind loyalty to empire in favor of global harmony, embodying themes of redemption and non-bending prowess central to Avatar: The Last Airbender's narrative.
