Serious Sam 2 is a first-person shooter video game developed by the Croatian studio Croteam and published by 2K Games.[1] Released on October 11, 2005, for Microsoft Windows and Xbox, it serves as the sequel to Serious Sam: The Second Encounter.[2][1] In the game's single-player campaign, players control protagonist Sam "Serious" Stone, who travels across diverse planets—including jungles, swamps, tundras, and futuristic cities—to battle hordes of alien enemies led by the antagonist Mental while collecting fragments of a powerful medallion to ultimately defeat him.[2]
The gameplay emphasizes frantic, arcade-style action characteristic of the series, with over 40 levels spread across seven unique environments, featuring more than 45 enemy types, seven massive bosses, and a variety of classic and new weapons such as the Serious Bomb and Cannon.[2] Players can utilize environmental elements like turrets and vehicles, and the game supports cooperative multiplayer for up to 16 players as well as deathmatch modes, with built-in NPC allies enhancing the chaotic combat encounters.[2] This design amplifies the over-the-top, high-intensity shooting mechanics, focusing on sheer volume of foes rather than complex storytelling or realism.[3]
Upon release, Serious Sam 2 received generally positive reviews for its humor, visual style, and multiplayer features, though some critics noted pacing issues and less refined level design compared to its predecessors.[4] It holds aggregate scores of 72/100 on Metacritic for both PC and Xbox versions, with praise from outlets like IGN (8.2/10) for its "explosive action" and 1UP awarding it an A grade as a "twisted roller coaster ride."[4][5] The title has since been re-released digitally by Devolver Digital on platforms like Steam, and received a 20th anniversary update in October 2025 featuring gameplay fixes, new content, and mod support, maintaining a cult following among fans of retro-style shooters.[2][6]
