Key Information

History

[edit]

In November 2009, ProSiebenSat.1 Media announced the new women's channel Fem-TV, whose name changed to Sixx at the beginning of February 2010. The name change was intended to establish Sixx as the sixth channel on the remote control, just like other channels do: Das Erste, ZDF, Das Vierte or ProSieben.[1]

In an interview in August 2010 with the industry magazine Kontakter, the then station manager Hofem-Best said that 80 percent of the viewers were women and that the most popular series included Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy and Damages. More in-house productions are currently planned, such as Galileo for women.[2]

Since 2012, the station has also worked with commercial breaks, mostly between 6:00PM and 9:00PM.[3]

In July 2013, the station received a new design and image concept. Animated chicken replaced the real white ones as testimonial.[4]

In early February 2010, the planned channel was renamed "sixx", adopting a modern, edgy spelling with a double "x" to convey and contemporary appeal, with the number six nodding to the hoped-for sixth position on remote controls. This rebranding emphasized a fresh, bold identity aimed at women navigating modern life, with content selections like American series and talk shows hosted by figures such as . The channel officially launched on May 7, 2010, at 8:15 PM CET under the slogan "sixx. I want that, too.," with initial programming focused on for women aged 14 to 49, including dramas, reality formats, and advice-oriented shows. Rebranding and Subsequent Changes

In July 2013, sixx underwent a significant with the introduction of a new logo and an updated animated design that incorporated stylized s as a recurring motif, intended to modernize the channel's visual identity and enhance its appeal to female audiences. This refresh transformed the channel's on-air graphics and promotional materials, positioning the animated as a versatile sidekick in trailers to inject playfulness while maintaining a sleek, contemporary aesthetic. Earlier, in September 2011, sixx temporarily introduced a programming block dedicated to preschool content, airing Saturdays from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. as part of a collaboration with to diversify its early-morning lineup. The block, which featured animated series for young children, operated under a cooperation agreement extending through August 2013 but was discontinued thereafter, allowing sixx to refocus on its core demographic of women aged 25-49. On February 1, 2021, Ellen Koch was appointed managing director of sixx, succeeding Wiebke Schodder and taking responsibility for the channel's overall content strategy during a period of accelerating decline in traditional linear television viewership. Koch, who had joined ProSiebenSat.1 in 2010 and contributed to sixx's early operations, served in the role until November 2023 and emphasized innovation and digital adaptation, aligning the channel with broader industry shifts toward streaming amid shrinking linear audiences. On October 1, 2025, Wiebke Schodder returned as managing director. By 2023, sixx deepened its integration with the Joyn streaming platform, enabling on-demand access to episodes for up to three weeks following their linear broadcast, thereby extending reach beyond traditional TV schedules. This move supported ProSiebenSat.1's full acquisition of Joyn that year, consolidating sixx's content within a unified free streaming ecosystem to combat fragmentation in viewer habits. In response to 2024's market challenges, including intensified competition from streaming services and softening linear ratings, sixx pivoted toward an increased emphasis on formats to drive engagement and viewer retention. The channel premiered new reality series such as "Das Medium: ", alongside plans for expanded reality programming in subsequent seasons to leverage high-involvement genres popular with its target audience.

Overall, sixx's programming underscores entertainment tailored for women through relatable, empowering German-language content.

Foreign-Language Acquisitions

Sixx maintains a significant portion of its schedule with foreign-language content, primarily acquired from international producers and dubbed into German to appeal to its target demographic of female viewers aged 14 to 49. The channel's core imported lineup features prominent US dramas, including long-running series like and , which emphasize emotional depth, relationships, and suspenseful storytelling. These acquisitions are facilitated through strategic partnerships with major US studios, such as those under , enabling sixx to secure rights for multiple seasons of high-profile shows. Additional US imports include investigative procedural Elementary and supernatural drama (broadcast as Charmed - Zauberhafte Hexen), both sourced via Paramount Global deals that provide access to complete seasons for extended runs. Complementing the dramas, sixx incorporates and programming from abroad to diversify its offerings and engage viewers with aspirational and transformative content. Notable examples include home renovation series Fixer Upper (Fixer Upper - Umbauen, einrichten, einziehen!), which highlights family dynamics and design challenges, and reruns of influential talk formats, though the emphasis remains on US-origin shows that align with themes of personal growth and empowerment. The channel also dedicates daily slots to foreign telenovelas and feature films, selected for their focus on romance, family conflicts, and emotional narratives that resonate with female audiences; representative acquisitions include serialized soaps emphasizing heartfelt drama and cinematic stories of resilience. Since its launch in 2010, sixx has adopted an acquisition strategy centered on bulk output agreements with US studios, prioritizing early to mid-seasons (typically 1 through 10) of enduring series to support marathon broadcasts and build viewer loyalty through familiarity. These deals, renegotiated periodically to adapt to changing content availability, allow the channel to maintain a cost-effective mix of evergreen imports amid shifts in global distribution. In recent years (2023–2025), sixx has expanded its international scope with additions like the Australian reality series Hochzeit auf den ersten Blick - Australien (Married at First Sight Australia), integrated into dubbed daytime schedules to offer fresh relational experiments and broaden appeal beyond traditional US fare. All foreign acquisitions undergo German dubbing to ensure seamless integration into the channel's localized viewing experience.

Broadcast and Distribution

Technical Specifications

Sixx broadcasts in a native (HDTV) format, providing a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels interlaced at 50 fields per second, which aligns with European PAL-based standards for smooth motion in 50 Hz systems. For compatibility with legacy standard-definition (SD) systems, the signal is downscaled to at 720×576 pixels, ensuring accessibility on older receivers while maintaining the core content quality. This dual-format approach supports sixx's availability across , , and without requiring specialized equipment for basic viewing. The channel adheres to a 16:9 for all programming, optimizing the viewing experience for modern flat-screen displays and avoiding letterboxing or pillarboxing distortions common in older 4:3 content. This standard is encoded using MPEG-4/AVC (H.264) compression for HD feeds, which efficiently handles the higher data rates needed for detailed imagery in drama series and lifestyle shows. Audio transmission on sixx defaults to stereo (two-channel) format using or AAC encoding, suitable for general broadcasts and ensuring clear dialogue and music across all platforms. Select programs, particularly high-profile films and series, offer enhanced for immersive experiences, available primarily through and cable distributions where bandwidth permits. This optional multi-channel audio elevates viewer engagement without compromising compatibility for stereo-only setups. Transmission occurs via multiple digital standards to cover diverse reception methods in its primary markets. Satellite delivery uses DVB-S2 modulation with 8PSK (8-phase shift keying) on the Astra satellite at 19.2°E orbital position, operating at frequencies such as 11,464 MHz horizontal polarization with a symbol rate of 22,000 and FEC 2/3 for robust signal integrity over long distances. Cable distribution employs DVB-C, the standard for coaxial networks in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, delivering the full HD feed with MPEG-4 encoding. Terrestrial broadcasting in Germany utilizes DVB-T2 for high-efficiency over-the-air reception, as integrated into the Freenet TV platform, supporting HEVC (H.265) for future-proofing where applicable. These protocols ensure low error rates and high reliability, with adaptive modulation to handle varying signal conditions. Sixx maintains a continuous 24-hour programming schedule, filling off-peak hours with automated playlists of repeats, infomercials, and thematic blocks to provide uninterrupted access for viewers in all time zones across its broadcast regions. This round-the-clock operation relies on centralized systems managed by ProSiebenSat.1, minimizing downtime and enabling seamless transitions between live and pre-recorded content.
