"Take You Dancing" is a song by American singer Jason Derulo. It was released as a single on July 21, 2020, by Atlantic Records, a sister of his previous home label Warner Records.[2][3] The song was written by Teemu Brunila, Derulo, Emanuel "Eman" Kiriakou, Sarah Solovay and Shawn Charles. Some reviewers remarked that the song is reminiscent of Charlie Puth’s “Attention” (2017).
On January 28, 2021, it was added as DLC for the video game Fuser.[4]
At the APRA Music Awards of 2022, the song was nominated for Most Performed International Work.[5]
In February 2024, the song was included on Derulo's fifth studio album Nu King.[6]
Background

Writing and Inspiration
During the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Jason Derulo aimed to craft an uplifting song to address the widespread isolation and challenges faced globally. He noted, "In these times, we all need a song that's going to uplift us," emphasizing the track's role as "a light in these trying days" amid lockdowns and uncertainty.[2][6] Derulo drew personal inspiration from his long-standing career in pop and R&B, where dance has served as a core element of his performances and music, seeking to foster joy and escapism for listeners confined at home. This motivation reflected his evolution as an artist who frequently incorporates energetic, dance-oriented tracks to connect with audiences emotionally. The initial songwriting sessions for "Take You Dancing" took place in early 2020, involving Derulo alongside collaborators Teemu Brunila, Emanuel Kiriakou, Sarah Solovay, and Shawn Charles. These sessions focused on developing a vibrant, feel-good composition that aligned with Derulo's vision for positivity.[2] "Take You Dancing" was released as a standalone single on July 21, 2020, through Atlantic Records, independent of any immediate album plans.Recording and Production
The recording sessions for "Take You Dancing" were completed in mid-2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, with the intent to create an uplifting track for listeners.[2][7] Production was led by Teemu Brunila and Emanuel "Eman" Kiriakou, who focused on crafting a polished pop sound through layered vocals, synth-driven elements, and programming to achieve a vibrant, dance-oriented texture.[7][2] Brunila contributed keyboards, guitar, bass, and programming, while Kiriakou handled additional production, editing, and recording engineering.[7] Jason Derulo recorded his lead vocals during these sessions, incorporating playful ad-libs such as "if you know what I mean" to add flirtatious emphasis and energy to the track.[8] The full personnel includes: Jason Derulo on vocals; writers Teemu Brunila, Jason Derulo, Emanuel Kiriakou, Sarah Solovay, and Shawn Charles; producers Teemu Brunila and Emanuel Kiriakou; recording engineers Ben Hogarth and Teemu Brunila; mixing engineer Serban Ghenea; editing engineer Emanuel Kiriakou; assistant engineers John Hanes and Scott Desmarais; and mastering engineer Chris Gehringer.[7][9][10]Composition and Lyrics
Musical Style
"Take You Dancing" is classified as a dance-pop track incorporating disco and Latin-inspired influences, with a runtime of 3:10 in 4/4 time at 113 beats per minute (BPM).[11][12][13] The song's structure follows a verse-chorus form, featuring a prominent pre-chorus build-up that heightens tension before the chorus, accented by falsetto hooks and synth-driven instrumentation produced by Teemu Brunila and Emanuel Kiriakou.[14][15] The track integrates retro disco beats reminiscent of 1970s funk, including an uncredited interpolation of the "Y.M.C.A." riff by the Village People, characterized by groovy basslines and rhythmic percussion, seamlessly blended with modern electronic dance music (EDM) drops that amplify its dancefloor energy.[1] This fusion creates a vibrant, infectious sound designed for club play, with synth layers providing a contemporary sheen over the nostalgic elements.[16][17] Set primarily in D minor, the song's harmonic progression—centered around i-iv-V progressions common in dance-pop—contributes to its upbeat, club-ready vibe, evoking urgency and release through rising tensions and explosive choruses.[18][19] The Latin influences manifest in percussive rhythms and melodic flourishes, enhancing the track's global appeal and rhythmic drive.[13]Lyrical Themes
The lyrics of "Take You Dancing" center on a theme of seduction presented as an invitation to dance, employing double entendres to imply sexual intimacy. The chorus repeatedly urges, "Let me take you dancing, if you know what I mean," where the phrase "take you dancing" serves as a euphemism for leading a romantic interest to a more private, physical encounter, such as "two-step to the bedroom, we can do more than two positions."[2][14] This playful disguise allows the song to maintain an upbeat, accessible facade while conveying overt desire, with lines like "I wanna take you down right now" further emphasizing the pursuit of immediate gratification.[13] Beyond the flirtatious pursuit, the lyrics explore escapism and the yearning for physical connection, using metaphors of movement and rhythm to symbolize uninhibited passion. Phrases such as "Run away, run away" and "Anything could happen" evoke a sense of spontaneous freedom from everyday constraints, positioning the dance floor—or bedroom—as a realm of pure sensory release.[14] The rhythm of the body in motion mirrors the heartbeat of desire, with suggestions of shared drinks like "Tequila and vodka" amplifying the intoxicating pull toward intimacy.[2] These elements blend the thrill of nightlife escapism with a deeper call for tactile, rhythmic union. Jason Derulo's vocal delivery reinforces the suggestive narrative through a flirtatious style, incorporating ad-libs and inflections that heighten the innuendo. His smooth, teasing phrasing on lines like "Bet you taste expensive, kinda like I'm 'bout to" adds a layer of seductive charm, making the lyrics feel intimately directed.[13] This approach echoes the mature undertones in his earlier hit "Swalla," where party-anthem energy similarly masks explicit themes of desire through playful wordplay.[20] The disco influences in the track's groove further amplify the dance motif, tying verbal seduction to physical sway.[14]Visuals and Promotion
Music Videos
An official lyric video for "Take You Dancing" was released on August 7, 2020, via Jason Derulo's YouTube channel.[21] The official dance video for "Take You Dancing" was released on July 22, 2020, via Jason Derulo's YouTube channel, showcasing Derulo alongside a group of professional dancers executing the song's signature TikTok choreography in a spacious warehouse setting.[22] The video emphasizes synchronized, high-energy moves designed to encourage viewer participation, aligning with the track's uplifting theme amid the COVID-19 pandemic.[1] Complementing the dance video, the official music video premiered on August 27, 2020, also on YouTube, directed by Christian Breslauer and produced by Blank Square Productions and The Lucky Bastards.[5] It expands on the dance motifs with vibrant, colorful sequences featuring Derulo in solo and ensemble routines across urban Los Angeles locations, blending dynamic camera work with thematic elements of escapism and joy. The video includes scenes filmed at Derulo's mansion in Tarzana, Los Angeles.[23][24] The dance video, in particular, quickly amassed over 100 million views on YouTube by early 2021, fueling widespread global dance challenges on social media platforms like TikTok.Live Performances
"Take You Dancing" debuted live on ABC's Good Morning America during its Summer Concert Series on July 24, 2020, formatted as a live music video to align with the song's dance-centric theme.[25] Derulo performed the track with high-energy choreography, marking the song's first public stage interpretation amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. Later that year, on December 15, 2020, Derulo delivered a medley combining "Take You Dancing" with his hit "Savage Love" during the live finale of season 19 of The Voice on NBC.[26] The performance showcased seamless transitions between the two tracks, emphasizing Derulo's vocal range and dance moves in a studio setting with backup dancers.[27] In 2023, the song featured prominently at the Afro-Latino Festival in Genk, Belgium, where Derulo's rendition incorporated lively crowd engagement typical of festival atmospheres.[28] This outdoor performance highlighted the track's upbeat rhythm, drawing enthusiastic responses from attendees celebrating Afro-Latino culture. The song became a staple in Derulo's 2023-2024 Nu King World Tour, integrated into the main setlist across international dates.[29] Key renditions included the March 23, 2024, show at Wiener Stadthalle in Vienna, Austria, and the March 27, 2024, concert at Mediolanum Forum in Assago (Milan), Italy, where it energized audiences with synchronized lighting and choreography.[30][31]Commercial Performance

In the United Kingdom, the song peaked at number 7 on the Official Singles Chart and spent a total of 30 weeks in the top 100.[32] It also ranked at number 93 on the UK year-end singles chart for 2020, reflecting its strong performance throughout the latter half of the year.[33] In the United States, "Take You Dancing" reached a peak of number 57 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it charted for 8 weeks.[4] On the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, the track performed even stronger, topping the list at number 1 for three non-consecutive weeks and maintaining a presence for over 20 weeks overall.[34] This success on genre-specific charts underscored its appeal in dance and electronic music circles. In Canada, the song peaked at number 15 on the Canadian Hot 100. The song saw notable airplay success across Europe. It topped the Hungary Rádiós Top 40 chart, as well as the Romania Airplay 100 and the CIS Airplay chart (TopHit). Additionally, it entered the top 10 in Norway, peaking at number 10 on the VG-lista singles chart, and in Ireland, where it reached number 7 on the Irish Singles Chart.[35][36] Several other European airplay charts saw top-10 placements, contributing to its regional traction. In Australia, "Take You Dancing" peaked at number 10 on the ARIA Singles Chart and remained on the listing for 22 weeks.[37] The track's performance in Asia was more gradual, with moderate charting on airplay surveys such as Japan's, where it entered the top 100 but did not achieve top-10 status.[38] Remixes, including a reggaeton version released in late 2020, helped extend its chart longevity into 2021 across multiple territories.| Country/Chart | Peak Position | Weeks on Chart | Source |
