Early life
Adetayo Olajide "Tayo" Edun was born on 14 May 1998 in Islington, London, England.[10] He is the son of a Nigerian father and a mother from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, which has shaped his multicultural identity and interest in representing Nigeria internationally.[11] Edun credits his mother as his primary supporter during his formative years, noting her encouragement to follow his own passions rather than parental expectations.[12] Growing up in London, he developed an early connection to football amid England's competitive youth environment.[11]Youth career
Edun joined the Fulham Academy at under-11 level, beginning his youth development with the club.[13] He progressed through the age groups, initially playing primarily as a left-back while also featuring in central midfield.[14] In 2015, at the age of 17, Edun signed his first professional contract with Fulham, agreeing to terms until June 2017.[15] During the 2015–16 season, he made four appearances for the Fulham under-21 side in the Professional Development League 2, often deployed in central midfield.[14] Edun earned a senior debut for Fulham on 9 August 2016, starting in a 3–2 EFL Cup win against Leyton Orient at the age of 18.[3][16] In July 2017, he extended his contract with Fulham for a further three years, until 2020, recognizing his potential as an England youth international.[3] Over the next two seasons, Edun continued to feature regularly for the under-21 team, making 12 appearances in the Premier League 2 during 2017–18.[17] He also made two appearances for the under-21s in the 2018–19 EFL Trophy.[18]Club career
Fulham
Edun joined the Fulham academy at under-11 level and progressed through the youth ranks, initially playing as a defender before transitioning to a versatile midfielder role.[13][3] He made his debut for the Fulham under-18s during the 2013–14 season at age 15, though limited by competition for places.[19] By the 2016–17 season, he had become a key figure in the under-23 side, contributing significantly in Premier League 2 with notable stats in chances created and interceptions.[20][21] Edun made his senior professional debut for Fulham on 9 August 2016, starting in a 3–2 EFL Cup first-round victory away to Leyton Orient at age 18.[22][13] He featured in three cup matches that season, totaling 278 minutes without scoring.[23] In July 2017, following his international success with England under-19s, Edun signed a new three-year professional contract with Fulham, securing his place in the first-team setup.[3] His Championship league debut came on 18 November 2017, starting in a 1–1 home draw against Derby County.[24][25] Over the 2017–18 season, he made two league appearances (96 minutes) and two cup outings (171 minutes), again without goals or assists.[23] To gain further experience, Edun was loaned to Championship side Ipswich Town on 3 August 2018 for the 2018–19 season, where he made six appearances and scored once.[26][23] With his contract set to expire in summer 2020, he departed permanently on 10 January 2020 to join Lincoln City on a two-and-a-half-year deal.[13] In total, Edun recorded seven senior appearances for Fulham across all competitions, all without goals.[23]Lincoln City
Tayo Edun joined Lincoln City on a permanent transfer from Fulham in January 2020, signing a two-and-a-half-year contract as a versatile left-sided player capable of operating as a left-back or midfielder.[13][27] He made an immediate impact, debuting in a 1-0 League One victory over Blackpool on January 18, 2020, where his composed and elegant performance earned praise from manager Michael Appleton, who likened him to a "Rolls Royce."[27] Over the remainder of the 2019-20 season, Edun featured in 15 league matches, contributing to Lincoln's solid mid-table finish despite a late red card in a 0-0 draw against Gillingham in February 2020, which Appleton appealed but ultimately stood.[28] In the 2020-21 campaign, Edun became a key figure in Lincoln's promotion push, making 41 league appearances and helping the team secure a fourth-place finish and a playoff spot.[29] He scored two goals across all competitions that season: a long-range strike in a 2-7 EFL Cup defeat to Liverpool on September 24, 2020, and a first-half opener in a 2-1 league win at AFC Wimbledon on January 2, 2021.[30][31] Edun started in the League One playoff final against Blackpool at Wembley on May 30, 2021, but Lincoln lost 1-1 (5-3 on penalties), denying promotion to the Championship despite his strong overall form that season.[32] He expressed frustration at not rewarding the fans with promotion, highlighting the club's widespread community support.[32] In the early part of the 2021-22 season, Edun scored an early goal in a 1-1 league draw away to Gillingham on August 7, 2021, after which a Gillingham supporter shoved him in the back, leading to the fan's later three-year stadium ban.[33] Across his time at Lincoln, he provided nine assists. Edun departed Lincoln in the 2021-22 season after 64 appearances and three goals in total, transferring to Championship side Blackburn Rovers on August 31, 2021, for an undisclosed fee reported around £500,000, with Lincoln retaining a future sell-on clause.[34][35]Blackburn Rovers
Tayo Edun joined Blackburn Rovers on a permanent transfer from Lincoln City on 31 August 2021, signing a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee.[36][37] Edun made his debut for the club on 18 September 2021, coming on as a substitute in a 2–1 away victory against Swansea City in the EFL Championship.[38] Primarily deployed as a left-back, he featured regularly in the 2021–22 season under manager Tony Mowbray, contributing to Blackburn's push for the play-offs, though they finished sixth and were eliminated in the semi-finals.[39] His versatility allowed him to play in midfield at times, and Mowbray praised his adaptability and potential following early appearances.[39] In the 2022–23 season, Edun's involvement decreased amid increased competition at left-back and a squad rebuild following Mowbray's departure and the appointment of Jon Dahl Tomasson.[40] He made fewer starts, often appearing as a substitute, and struggled to regain a consistent role. Over his two-year spell at Ewood Park, Edun accumulated 34 appearances across all competitions without scoring a goal.[41] Edun departed Blackburn on 25 July 2023, transferring to Charlton Athletic for an undisclosed fee as part of a squad overhaul under Tomasson.[41][42]Charlton Athletic
Edun joined Charlton Athletic from Blackburn Rovers on 25 July 2023, signing a two-year contract with an option for a third year for an undisclosed fee.[6] The 25-year-old left-back and midfielder was described by manager Dean Holden as a player the club had pursued extensively, highlighting his versatility and experience in the Championship.[6] In his debut season (2023–24), Edun became a regular in the League One squad, making 26 league appearances with 21 starts, accumulating 1,792 minutes and providing two assists.[43] One notable contribution came in a 2–2 draw against Portsmouth on 11 November 2023, where he assisted Conor McGrandles' late equalizer. However, his campaign included disciplinary challenges, such as a controversial second yellow card leading to a red in a 1–0 loss to Northampton Town on 23 January 2024, after which he issued a public apology, noting it was his fourth career red card—all from accumulating two bookings.[44][45] Across all competitions that season, he featured in 33 matches. During the 2024–25 season, Edun's involvement was more limited before his departure, with three appearances in the EFL Trophy, including scoring the opening goal in a 2–1 group stage win over Cambridge United on 17 September 2024—a left-footed shot from the left side of the box.[46][47] Overall, in 18 months at the club, he made 37 appearances, scored one goal, and recorded two assists.[48] Edun departed Charlton on 16 January 2025, signing a permanent deal with Peterborough United until the end of the 2024–25 season for undisclosed terms.[49]Peterborough United and Stockport County
On 16 January 2025, Edun joined Peterborough United on a permanent transfer from Charlton Athletic, signing a contract until the end of the 2024–25 season.[49] During his time with the club in League One, he featured as a left-back, making 17 appearances and contributing 2 goals.[2] His performances included starting all of his matches, accumulating 1,466 minutes on the pitch, and providing 2 assists, though he received 3 yellow cards and 2 red cards across the campaign.[9] In May 2025, Edun rejected a second contract offer from Peterborough United, signaling his intent to seek opportunities elsewhere at the season's conclusion.[50] Following the expiration of his deal, he transferred to Stockport County on 19 June 2025 as a free agent, signing a two-year contract until June 2027.[51] The move reunited him with League One football, where he was positioned as an attacking full-back to bolster the team's defensive and offensive options from the left flank.[2] Edun began pre-season training with Stockport ahead of the 2025–26 campaign but has yet to make his debut due to an ankle injury sustained in pre-season, as of November 2025.[52][53]International career
England U17
Edun represented England at under-17 level, earning his first call-up in 2014. He featured in four matches between January and October 2015, including selection for the 2015 UEFA European Under-17 Championship and the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile.[54][55]England U19
Edun earned his first call-up to the England under-19 squad in November 2016 for UEFA European Championship qualifying matches against Luxembourg, Wales, and Greece.[56] He made his debut as a substitute in the 3-2 loss to Wales on 12 November 2016 at Nantporth Stadium in Bangor, replacing Stephy Mavididi in the 70th minute.[56] The previous day, he had started and played the full 90 minutes in the 2-0 victory over Luxembourg on 10 November 2016 at Corbett Sports Stadium in Rhyl. Two days after the Wales match, he was an unused substitute in the 2-0 victory over Greece on 15 November 2016.[57] In March 2017, Edun featured in the elite qualifying round, starting in the 3-0 win against Norway on 22 March 2017 at St. George's Park, where he scored England's second goal with a left-footed shot from the edge of the area just after the restart.[58] He also started the subsequent 3-0 triumph over Spain on 24 March 2017, helping secure qualification for the finals with a strong defensive display in midfield.[59] Edun was included in the 20-man squad for the 2017 UEFA European Under-19 Championship finals in Georgia, announced on 26 June 2017, alongside players like Mason Mount and Ryan Sessegnon.[60] He started all group stage matches: the 2-0 win over Bulgaria on 3 July 2017, the 1-0 victory against the Netherlands on 6 July 2017, and the 4-1 semi-final success versus Germany on 9 July 2017, where England advanced with braces from Ben Brereton and Sessegnon.[61][62][63] In the final against Portugal on 15 July 2017 at the Boris Paichadze Stadium in Tbilisi, Edun started but received a second yellow card in the 86th minute, resulting in a red card; England still won 2-1 to claim the title, with goals from Easah Suliman and Lukas Nmecha.[64] Overall, Edun made eight appearances for the England under-19s, contributing one goal and playing a key role in their successful qualification and championship-winning campaign under head coach Keith Downing.[60][58][64]England U20
Edun earned seven caps for the England under-20 team between 2017 and 2018, featuring primarily as a left-back or central midfielder in the U20 Elite League and friendly fixtures.[65] His international debut came on 31 August 2017, starting in a 3–0 friendly win against the Netherlands at St. George's Park, where he played 70 minutes before being substituted for Todd Cantwell.[66] Edun followed this with a brief substitute appearance in a 0–0 draw with Switzerland on 4 September 2017, entering in the 75th minute.[67] In October 2017, Edun started and played 75 minutes in a 5–1 away defeat to Italy during the U20 Elite League, contributing to England's midfield alongside players like Reece Oxford and Marcus Edwards.[68] He then came on as a 60th-minute substitute in a 4–0 home victory over the Czech Republic five days later.[69] Later that month, on 14 November 2017, Edun started in a 2–1 loss to Germany in Zwickau, exiting after 61 minutes for Harvey Barnes in a match that marked England's first defeat of the campaign.[70] Edun returned to the starting lineup for the U20 Elite League in March 2018, making brief substitute appearances in losses to Poland (18 minutes on 22 March) and a full 90-minute outing in a 3–0 win over Portugal on 27 March at the Etihad Stadium, where England dominated with goals from Phil Foden, Mason Greenwood, and Reiss Nelson.[65][71] These appearances highlighted Edun's versatility in defensive and midfield roles during a transitional period for the Young Lions under coach Keith Downing.Career statistics and honours
