Key Information

In 2016, he joined the Philippine reality search Pinoy Boyband Superstar, but did not make the cut to be part of the band. He was thenpart of a horror-fantasy drama series called La Luna Sangre.[2][3][4] The trailer of his latest film Glorious reached more than 5 million views on its first day of release.[5]

Early life

[edit]

Labrusca was born on August 7, 1995, in Houston, Texas, in the United States.[6] He is the son of Filipino actor Boom Labrusca and Filipina singer Angel Jones.[7] He grew up in Los Angeles, California with his mother, step father (Boom Dayupay) and sister. When he was 9, his family moved to Vancouver, Canada. He then flew to the Philippines to pursue his career in show business.

Career

[edit]

Before Labrusca auditioned for Pinoy Boyband Superstar, he was already a face of various TV commercials. He became more popular when he played the guy who broke a girl's heart (Elisse Joson) in the viral McDonald's TV ad entitled Tuloy Pa Rin in 2016.

During his audition in Pinoy Boyband Superstar, he was unexpectedly reunited with his biological father Boom Labrusca. He successfully became one of the top contenders and went up to the Top 7 for the grand finals. He did not make it to the Top 5 as the final member of BoybandPH.

He made his acting debut in 2017 via TV5's Wattpad Presents with Louise delos Reyes. Later, he joined La Luna Sangre, which is considered as his first break playing the role of Jake Arguelles.

Personal life

Labrusca is a United States citizen and a US passport holder.[9][10] He is unmarried.[10]

Controversies

[edit]

On January 3, 2019, shortly after landing at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), Labrusca allegedly yelled curses at Bureau of Immigration officers after they stamped his passport for a 30-day stay only, which is the maximum visa-free stay in the Philippines for US passport holders. Labrusca was using his American passport at that time and had no work visa. However, he mistakenly believed that he was covered by the Balikbayan Program's one-year visa-free stay.[11][12] A spokesperson of the Bureau of Immigration explained that the Balikbayan Program "is for former Filipinos and their immediate family members who are traveling with them. If these family members are not traveling with them, then they are not qualified." Labrusca was not accompanied by an immediate family member at that time.[12][13] Labrusca was widely criticized for the incident, and Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. suggested his deportation.[14] The following day, Labrusca apologized to the immigration officers and admitted that he did not know the full details of the Balikbayan Program, but maintained that he did not curse or shout at any officer.[15]

In June 2021, Labrusca was charged with alleged acts of lasciviousness and slight physical injuries for an incident that happened 5 months before, on the night of January 16, 2021, where allegedly, a drunk Labrusca unstrapped a woman's top to expose her breasts before forcefully pulling her to sit on his lap. He also allegedly choked a man on that same night.[16][17] In July, the physical injuries case was dismissed by the Makati prosecutor's office since the complaint was filed "more than two months from the date of its alleged commission, the crime is already extinguished by reason of prescription."[18] In March 2022, the acts of lasciviousness case was dismissed citing no probable cause.[19]

The pivotal shift solidified during 2017-2018 through , a series produced by , in which Labrusca portrayed Jake Arguelles across 185 episodes, transitioning from peripheral appearances to a recurring support role that honed his screen presence amid ensemble casts and serialized narratives. Concurrently, his involvement escalated with the 2018 Cinemalaya entry ML, directed by Benedict Mique and produced independently for the circuit, where he played a sheltered teenager confronting martial law under a retired general's influence, emphasizing historical reenactment over commercial appeal. Labrusca has attributed his pursuit of acting to an innate affinity for inherited from his parents, rather than a premeditated strategy, aligning with his pre-2017 modeling timeline where commercial gigs predominated but lacked narrative depth. A pivotal role came in the 2020 web series Hello Stranger, where Labrusca portrayed Xavier De Guzman, a confident basketball player who evolves from rival to romantic partner with classmate Mico during virtual school sessions. Produced by ABS-CBN's Black Sheep as its inaugural digital project, the romantic comedy emphasized pandemic-era themes of isolation and digital intimacy, marking Labrusca's entry into the emerging Boys' Love (BL) genre tailored for online audiences. The series' structure—weekly episodes freely accessible via streaming—facilitated broader reach beyond traditional TV, fostering collaborations like Labrusca's on-screen chemistry with JC Alcantara, which propelled BL's niche appeal in local media. Labrusca's television work later expanded into serialized dramas, showcasing genre versatility from light romance to antagonism. Film Roles

Labrusca gained prominence in Philippine cinema with his lead role as Carlo, a college student entangled in a psychological horror narrative exploring the traumas of martial law, in the independent film ML (2018), directed by Benedict Mique Jr. and co-starring veteran actor Eddie Garcia as a retired colonel. The film, an entry at the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival, depicted Carlo's confrontation with historical violence during a visit to the colonel's home, marking Labrusca's breakthrough in a genre blending suspense and social commentary on authoritarianism. His performance drew attention for portraying youthful naivety clashing with generational reckoning, though the film's niche release limited mainstream box office data. Subsequent roles showcased versatility, including Bradley in the sports drama Double Twisting Double Back (2018), centered on gymnastics and personal ambition, and Gardo in the ensemble comedy The Mall, The Merrier! (2019), which highlighted interpersonal dynamics in a commercial setting. In U-Turn (2020), he played Robin, navigating moral dilemmas in a thriller about hit-and-run consequences, expanding his range into ethical suspense. These early films positioned Labrusca as an emerging talent in indie and mid-budget productions, often emphasizing character-driven conflicts over high-production spectacle. Despite initial discomfort, he viewed the experience as growth-oriented, prioritizing authenticity over conventional heroism in a market favoring restrained portrayals.
