2012–15: Formation and early EPs

[edit]

With Confidence formed in mid-2012 with Jayden Seeley, Josh Brozzesi, and Samuel Haynes, who had all attended high school together. Shortly thereafter, member Inigo Del Carmen joined, and the four began posting videos on YouTube where they released their debut single "Stand Again" for free download on 27 April 2013.[4] The band then released their debut EP Youth independently on 1 July 2013,[5] and saw reasonable success, receiving national radio-play on Australian stations 2Day FM and Triple J.[6] Alongside the Youth EP release, With Confidence played their first Australian tour supporting The Never Ever.[7] The band went on to play local supports for 5 Seconds of Summer,[8] The Getaway Plan,[9] and The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus,[10] continuing to build a following.

On 8 January 2014, guitarist Samuel Haynes was announced as no longer being a part of With Confidence.[11] The band continued writing as a three-piece and on 31 March released the new single and debut music video "I Will Never Wait".[12] They supported this release with their first national headline tour in April, selling out multiple shows including Sydney's "The Lair" (The Metro Theatre).[13] On 3 September, the band returned to four-piece status when previously touring guitarist Luke Rockets was announced as an official member.[14] They continued keeping the year busy touring and supporting the likes of You Me at Six, Tonight Alive,[15] Marianas Trench, The Maine, and Kids in Glass Houses.[16] The band released their second EP Distance on 13 January 2015.[17] This was shortly followed by their second headlining tour, again selling out multiple venues throughout Australia.

2016–17: Hopeless Records and Better Weather

[edit]

On 4 January 2016 the band announced they had signed to American independent record label Hopeless Records. They coincided this news with new single and music video "We'll Be Okay".[18] Following this the band announced an Australian headline tour set to take place in April, with support from Harbours.[19] On 5 April they released their new single "Keeper" along with the announcement that their debut album Better Weather was going to be released on 17 June worldwide. Following their Australian headline tour, the band travelled to Japan to tour with The Wonder Years, ROAM & Cautioners. Directly after the Japanese tour, With Confidence travelled to the UK to support As It Is alongside American band Jule Vera. After the UK tour the band voyaged across to the US to appear on the entirety of the Vans Warped Tour.[20]

On 21 July, the band released a music video for their Harry Potter-referencing song "Voldemort".[21] Bassist Jayden Seeley said at the time that "“’Fear of a name only increases fear of the thing itself.’ Voldemort is my personification of mental illness and this song is a big, happy and carefree fuck you to Voldemort.“"[21] On 17 October, the band announced they were releasing two new versions of the songs. One would be an acoustic version and the other features John Floreani of Trophy Eyes. The songs were released on 18 October.[22]

Upon returning to Australia the band were on the road almost immediately again, supporting Motion City Soundtrack[23] & 5 Seconds of Summer[24] before heading out on their own album tour in October to celebrate the album that charted at #22 on the ARIA Charts. In December, it was announced they would be a part of Kerrang!'s American Superhits Green Day Tribute CD, covering "Wake Me Up When September Ends".[25]

In February 2017, the band headlined a tour in the UK and Europe, with support from Milestones, Broadside, and Safe To Say.[26] In April, they embarked on tour in the US to support State Champs, along with Don Broco and Against the Current.[27] In May, they returned to the UK for a co-headlining tour with Set It Off.[28]

In November 2017, the band put out a statement that they had parted ways with lead guitarist, Luke Rockets, after alleged sexual misconduct.[29][30] The band subsequently dropped the remaining dates of their US tour.

2018-2021: Love and Loathing and line-up change

[edit]

Following their break from touring With Confidence announced a late February return show at the Chain Reaction in Anaheim, shortly followed by the announcement of their spot on Warped Tour 2018.[31] They announced their second studio album Love and Loathing on 11 June shortly before their run on Warped Tour, along with its lead single "That Something".[32] On 17 July, the band released their second single, "Jaded" along with a music video.[33] The album was released on 10 August 2018.

In 2019, With Confidence released a cover of Train's "Drops of Jupiter" as part of the Hopeless Records Songs That Saved My Life, Vol 2 compilation. Drummer Josh Brozessi says the band made a playlist of songs from the 90s and 2000s before choosing Train's hit as their cover after "a few rehearsals." They chose "Drops of Jupiter" over songs like Third Eye Blind's "Jumper" and New Radicals' "Get What You Give."[34]

On 26 March 2021, the band announced via Instagram the addition of guitarist Scotty Mac.[35]

2022: Tours and Breakup

[edit]

From May to June 2022, With Confidence supported Stand Atlantic on their F.E.A.R. World Tour. Later that fall, the band joined Real Friends on their North American tour. Ahead of the tour's start, the band announced on social media that they were to break up after the tour and a small run of shows in Australia.[36]

Style and influences

[edit]

AllMusic biographer Neil Z. Yeung wrote that the band "carries the blink-182 torch of pop-punk."[37]

With Confidence have cited influences from bands the Dangerous Summer, Kings of Leon, Blink-182, the Wonder Years, the Strokes, and La Dispute on their Facebook. Along with Blink-182, All Time Low, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the Dangerous Summer mentioned in their interview with Beers with the Band on YouTube.[38][39]

The band uses mental health as theme throughout their debut album, as shown in songs such as "Voldemort".[40]

The group signed with Hopeless Records in 2016 and released their major-label debut album Better Weather that year, followed by Love and Loathing and Other Youth Anxieties in 2018 and a self-titled album in 2021. In November 2017, the band parted ways with Rockets amid allegations of sexual misconduct involving a minor, continuing thereafter as a trio. With Confidence toured internationally, including appearances on the Vans Warped Tour, but announced their disbandment in September 2022, concluding with a final Australian tour.

History

2012–2015: Formation and early EPs

With Confidence formed in mid-2012 in , , when high school friends Jayden Seeley (lead vocals and bass), Josh Brozzesi (drums), and Samuel Haynes (guitar) began playing together in the local pop punk scene. The trio embraced a DIY , rehearsing informally and performing at small venues to hone their sound, drawing initial attention through covers of established pop punk tracks alongside originals exploring themes of youth, relationships, and emotional turmoil. The band's debut extended play, Love, Death & All the Rest, arrived in 2013 as a self-produced and self-released effort distributed primarily through digital platforms like . This four-track EP captured their raw energy and helped cultivate a grassroots following via local gigs and word-of-mouth sharing among peers. By 2014, Haynes departed the group, leading to the addition of guitarist Inigo Del Carmen, which stabilized the lineup for further development. In 2015, With Confidence issued their follow-up EP, , again independently produced and released digitally, featuring polished production that reflected growing songwriting maturity while maintaining their high-energy style. The release coincided with expanded touring, including their first interstate performances across and a support slot on a national tour with UK band As It Is, which broadened their audience and generated buzz from smaller labels scouting emerging acts. These efforts solidified their reputation in the Australian underground, setting the stage for broader opportunities without compromising their independent roots.

2016–2017: Hopeless Records signing and Better Weather

Following support tours with Neck Deep and State Champs across Australia in early 2016, including dates at Sydney's Metro Theatre on January 9 and Melbourne's Arrow on Swanston on January 14, With Confidence signed with American independent label Hopeless Records, with the deal announced on January 4. The band recorded their debut full-length album Better Weather with producer Stevie Knight and mix engineer Kyle Black, releasing it on June 17, 2016, through Hopeless Records. The album debuted and peaked at number 22 on the ARIA Albums Chart. To promote Better Weather, With Confidence made their United States touring debut on the Vans Warped Tour throughout the summer of 2016, performing multiple dates including Shakopee, Minnesota, on July 24. This exposure marked the band's initial breakthrough in international markets, leveraging the Hopeless signing to expand beyond Australian audiences.

2018–2021: Love and Loathing, lineup changes, and touring

With Confidence released their sophomore album Love and Loathing on August 10, , via . The record, produced by Mike Green, featured a polished sound emphasizing catchy melodies alongside emotive lyrics addressing first loves, breakups, and personal introspection. It debuted on the Heatseekers Albums chart, marking the band's expanding presence in the scene. Following the album's launch, the band maintained live momentum with extensive touring, including headlining shows and festival appearances across , the , and in 2018 and 2019. To bolster their performances amid a shifting lineup, they incorporated additional guitar support for international dates, sustaining high-energy sets drawn heavily from the new material. The onset of the in 2020 disrupted planned tours and promotions, as with much of the live , leading to widespread postponements and a pivot toward virtual engagements for fan connection. With Confidence adapted by focusing on re-promotion of Love and Loathing tracks through platforms, preserving audience engagement amid global venue closures.

2022: Final tours and disbandment

On September 10, 2022, With Confidence announced via that they would disband after a decade together, with their forthcoming and Australian tours designated as final performances. The band's statement highlighted sustained enjoyment in creating and performing music but underscored a collective decision for closure, without reference to external conflicts, financial issues, or scandals. The U.S. leg featured co-headlining dates with Broadside, marking the band's concluding North American appearances before shifting to Australia. Australian farewell shows occurred in November 2022, including performances on November 25 at The Corner Hotel in Melbourne, November 26 in Sydney, and the final concert on November 27 at The Triffid in Brisbane. Following the show, band members shared reflections on , reiterating origins rooted in pure musical passion and expressing gratitude to supporters, while confirming no ongoing disputes or pressures influenced the split. As of 2025, the band's official website and assets remain operational but inactive, with no indications of revival or legal entanglements.

Musical style and influences

Genre characteristics and evolution

With Confidence's core sound is rooted in , defined by fast-paced rhythms with tempos typically between 98 and 145 beats per minute, driving guitar riffs, and layered dual vocals that emphasize anthemic, hook-driven choruses. This structure supports introspective lyrics centered on struggles, interpersonal relationships, and themes of loss, delivered with emotional intensity characteristic of the genre's blend of accessibility and vulnerability. The band's early self-released EPs, such as Love, Death & Distancing (2013) and Apologise (2014), showcased a raw, unpolished aesthetic aligned with DIY punk traditions, prioritizing energetic live-wire delivery over studio refinement. Following their 2016 signing to , releases like Better Weather introduced cleaner production values, pairing gritty vocal performances with calculated instrumentation for broader appeal. Subsequent albums, including Love and Loathing (2018), further matured this approach through punchy mixes and glossy effects, enhancing melodic clarity while retaining punk's propulsive edge. This progression reflects a shift toward professional engineering without diluting the foundational upbeat aggression, as evidenced by consistent genre classifications as across music databases.

Key influences and comparisons

Vocalist Jayden Seeley has cited growing up listening to , New Found Glory, , and Blink-182 as key early influences, emphasizing their role in shaping the band's foundations. del Carmen referenced alongside tracks like "Supersoaker" and "" for melodic catchiness and vocal delivery. Seeley further highlighted Blink-182's full discography as a direct template, particularly influencing tracks like "Voldemort" through its punk energy and humor-infused lyricism. These draw from 2000s Warped Tour-era acts, with members expressing intent to revive the era's upbeat, relatable pop punk formula—characterized by fast tempos, gang vocals, and personal storytelling—rather than pioneering new elements. The band positioned itself as carrying forward Blink-182's torch, blending ‘90s punk roots with early scene staples like New Found Glory's hooks and Yellowcard's violin-tinged emotion, evident in With Confidence's own melodic choruses and self-deprecating themes. Stylistically, With Confidence parallels contemporaries like in high-energy delivery, shared tour circuits including bills, and comparable reliance on scene-standard production for accessible, radio-friendly tracks. Both acts achieved mid-tier chart success through emulation of proven templates—' Around the World and Back (2015) peaking at No. 17 on Independent Albums, mirroring With Confidence's Better Weather (2016) entry at No. 16—underscoring causal factors like label support (Pure Noise for , Hopeless for With Confidence) over stylistic novelty. This alignment reflects broader scene dynamics where bands sustain viability by iterating on established formulas from New Found Glory and , prioritizing emotional accessibility over innovation.

Controversies

2017 sexual misconduct allegations

In November 2017, With Confidence's guitarist Luke Rockets faced allegations of with a minor, stemming from an anonymous post claiming he engaged a 14-year-old fan in explicit online conversations and attempted to meet her. The band responded on November 13 via , announcing Rockets' immediate dismissal, a zero-tolerance policy for behaviors compromising fan safety, and no prior awareness of the claims. Days later, on November 15, frontman Jayden Seeley was accused via of pressuring a then-15-year-old fan (in 2013, when Seeley was 21) to send nude photos, with the accuser asserting Seeley knew her age. Seeley issued a denial, stating interactions were minimal and one-sided; the accuser had misrepresented her age as 18, sent unsolicited explicit images and propositions (including offers of , which he rejected), and that he neither requested photos nor pursued further contact upon learning details that raised doubts. No criminal charges or civil lawsuits were filed against Rockets or Seeley, and investigations by authorities are absent from public records. The allegations, emerging amid a broader wave of unverified social media accusations in the pop-punk scene (often amplified by outlets without independent corroboration), prompted Unify Gathering festival to drop the band from its 2018 lineup. With Confidence announced an indefinite hiatus on December 18, 2017, halting tours and album recording to address fallout, but resumed operations thereafter, issuing further releases and tours without recurrence of similar claims. Online discourse, including fan analyses, highlighted potential inconsistencies in Seeley's accuser's narrative—such as her proactive explicit overtures and age deception—questioning the claims' foundation absent forensic or legal validation.

Band members

Final lineup

The final lineup of With Confidence, active until the band's disbandment announcement on September 12, 2022, comprised and Jayden Seeley (2012–2022), and backing vocalist Inigo Del Carmen (2012–2022), drummer Joshua Brozzesi (2012–2022), and (c. 2018–2022). This configuration followed lineup adjustments in the late , including the addition of Mac as a second to enhance live performances and recording stability after earlier member departures. The band performed no further shows or releases post-2022, marking the end of their activities as a unit.

Former members

Guitarist Samuel Haynes was a founding member of With Confidence, serving from the band's formation in 2012 until his departure in 2014. Luke Rockets joined as lead following Haynes' exit and contributed to the band's early recordings and tours until November 13, 2017, when the group announced his immediate removal. Following Rockets' departure, With Confidence operated as a three-piece for several years, with no further permanent exits among the core rhythm section of vocalist Jayden Seeley, guitarist Inigo Del Carmen, and drummer Joshua Brozzesi until the band's 2022 disbandment. This relative stability in the foundational lineup supported consistent touring and album production post-2017.
