Plot
Synopsis
Bong Ye-bun works as a veterinarian in the serene rural town of Mujin, where life is peaceful and largely free of crime.[3] One night, while treating an injured cow during a meteor shower, she experiences a bizarre incident that grants her psychometry powers, enabling her to glimpse the past of people or animals specifically by touching their hindquarters.[6] Warm-hearted and curious, Ye-bun begins experimenting with her newfound ability to uncover hidden truths in her daily life.[3] When Moon Jang-yeol, a hot-tempered detective demoted from Seoul to the local station, arrives in Mujin, he discovers Ye-bun's secret and recruits her to assist in solving petty local crimes using her powers.[7] Their unlikely partnership blends humor and tension as they tackle everyday mysteries, from lost items to minor thefts, while Ye-bun navigates the ethical challenges of her invasive ability.[8] However, the duo soon faces a escalating threat when a series of murders shatters the town's tranquility, forcing them to investigate a chilling serial killer case that ties into deeper secrets.[1] Amid the investigations, Ye-bun's personal life intertwines with the case through her interactions with Kim Seon-woo, a kind but enigmatic convenience store worker who becomes a romantic interest and complicates her growing bond with Jang-yeol.[3] The 16-episode series structures its narrative around episodic cases that gradually expose a town-wide conspiracy involving corruption, hidden pasts, and supernatural elements, building toward a larger mystery that tests the limits of Ye-bun's powers and her relationships.[9]Themes
"Behind Your Touch" employs supernatural elements, particularly the protagonist Bong Ye-bun's psychometry ability activated by touch, as a metaphor for uncovering hidden truths beneath the surface of a seemingly idyllic rural village. This power symbolizes invasive empathy, allowing characters to access memories and secrets, while also highlighting vulnerability, as unintended physical contact can lead to ethical dilemmas and personal exposure. The mechanic underscores the tension between connection and intrusion in close-knit communities.[10] The series offers social critique of systemic corruption in rural South Korea, exposing local power abuses through figures like influential assemblymen who manipulate police and community decisions. It addresses economic disparities and cover-ups, such as real estate scams that devastate livelihoods yet fail to alter voter loyalties, illustrating apathy and resilience in the face of exploitation. These elements reveal the fragility of community bonds in isolated settings.[9][10] Blending romance and comedy with darker mystery, the narrative uses lighthearted rom-com tropes—like misunderstandings and quirky partnerships—to contrast the weight of secrets and investigations, emphasizing themes of second chances and the restorative power of community ties. The humor arises from the absurdity of the supernatural premise, providing levity amid suspense, while romantic tensions explore the costs of withheld truths.[10][9] Character growth is driven by the supernatural powers, forcing personal reckonings: Ye-bun transitions from isolation due to her "useless" ability to empowerment as she aids others, fostering emotional connections. Similarly, Jang-yeol grapples with ambition clashing against integrity under corrupt influences, leading to self-reflection and apologies for past misjudgments. These arcs highlight healing through mutual support and adversity.[10][9]Cast
Main cast
Han Ji-min portrays Bong Ye-bun, a shy veterinarian in the rural town of Mujin who acquires psychometry powers after an accident, allowing her to glimpse a person's past by touching their buttocks; as the central protagonist, she navigates the challenges of her newfound abilities in both her professional life and amateur investigations.[3][5] Lee Min-ki plays Moon Jang-yeol, an ambitious and hot-tempered detective previously with Seoul's violent crime unit, who is demoted to Mujin's small police station and brings his investigative expertise while developing romantic tension with Ye-bun.[3][11] Suho depicts Kim Seon-woo, a kind-hearted and mysterious part-time worker at Mujin's convenience store who serves as Ye-bun's first love from her past, providing comic relief and emotional support through his naive demeanor and local insights.[3][12] Together, Ye-bun, Jang-yeol, and Seon-woo form an unlikely investigative trio, where Ye-bun's psychometric abilities complement Jang-yeol's detective skills and Seon-woo's knowledge of the town, enabling them to tackle a series of mysterious crimes in Mujin.[3][5]Supporting cast
Joo Min-kyung plays Bae Ok-hee, Ye-bun's close friend who runs a local store, whose overzealous and comedic antics provide comic relief while assisting in investigations and highlighting the lighter side of small-town life.[13][14] Yang Jae-seong portrays Jung Ui-hwan, Ye-bun's maternal grandfather and former director of Jeong Animal Hospital, whose presence underscores family dynamics and the historical roots of the Bong family within the Mujin community.[3][13] Kim Hee-won appears as Won Jong-muk, the chief of the Mujin Police Station's violent crimes department, serving as an authority figure whose decisions influence departmental tensions and contribute to the unfolding institutional conflicts in the series.[3][15] Park Hyuk-kwon stars as Park Jong-bae, a local shaman operating General MacArthur's Fortune Telling shop, whose mystical involvement adds layers to the town's supernatural elements and subplots involving corruption and hidden secrets.[3][13] Additional supporting roles enrich the community ensemble, including Park Sung-yeon as Jung Hyeon-ok, Ye-bun's aunt, who embodies familial support and town traditions, and Jung Yi-rang as Na Mi-ran, a detective in Jang-yeol's squad whose teamwork briefly intersects with the protagonist trio during key cases.[3][11]Special guest appearances
The series features several special guest appearances that provide episodic depth and humor, particularly in early and concluding episodes, without disrupting the central narrative arcs. In episodes 1 and 15, Jung Jin-gak appears as a concerned dog owner, whose role ties into the protagonist Bong Ye-bun's initial discovery and later reflection on her psychometric powers, adding a layer of everyday relatability to the supernatural elements.[13] Episode 1 introduces additional one-off characters through Song Chi-hoon as a doctor, who assists in a medical consultation scene, and Yoon Sang-won as a pickpocket, highlighting minor criminal incidents in the rural setting to establish the show's blend of mystery and comedy. These brief roles effectively ground the premiere in local intrigue.[13] Michael E. Gomes makes a cameo as fisherman Ali in a coastal subplot, contributing to a side investigation that enriches the village's quirky community dynamics without extending into recurring plotlines.[13] The finale in episode 16 includes high-profile cameos by Lee Jung-eun and Jang Do-yeon, whose appearances inject surprise and levity into the resolution of the serial killer case, enhancing the emotional closure for the main characters. Such guest spots, including various idols and actors in humorous interludes or subtle teases related to the overarching serial killer mystery, serve to diversify the episodic cases and maintain viewer engagement by offering fresh perspectives and comic relief throughout the season.[16]Episodes
Overview
Behind Your Touch is a 2023 South Korean television series comprising 16 episodes, each approximately 60 to 70 minutes in length.[5] It premiered on JTBC on August 12, 2023, and concluded on October 1, 2023, airing two episodes per weekend on Saturdays and Sundays at 22:30 KST.[3] The series adopts a hybrid structure, blending standalone procedural cases—where petty crimes are investigated using the protagonist's psychometry powers—with an overarching serialized mystery centered on a serial killer and systemic corruption in a rural town.[2] This format allows for self-contained stories in early episodes that progressively tie into the central plot arc involving a veterinarian and a detective solving crimes together.[1] The overall narrative was crafted by writers Lee Nam-kyu, Oh Bo-hyun, and Kim Da-hee, while directors Kim Seok-yoon and Choi Bo-yoon oversaw production, employing dual direction to maintain dynamic pacing throughout the season.[17] Structured as a single season, the show delivers a complete resolution to its mysteries, with no renewal announcements made as of 2025.[18]List of episodes

Production
Development
The series was greenlit by JTBC in late 2022 as a co-production with Netflix, marking an early collaboration aimed at blending domestic broadcasting with global streaming distribution. Screenwriters Lee Nam-gyu, Oh Bo-hyun, and Kim Da-hee were attached from the outset, drawing on rural mystery tropes to craft a narrative centered around a veterinarian's unexpected psychometric abilities in a seemingly idyllic small town.[21][3] The initial concept positioned the story as a light supernatural comedy focused on quirky everyday cases solved through the protagonist's powers. This intent positioned the series as a bridge between lighthearted K-drama staples and broader thriller appeal, facilitating its simultaneous JTBC airing and worldwide streaming debut.[22][15] Directors Kim Seok-yoon and Choi Bo-yoon joined the project in late 2022, bringing experience from prior JTBC works to emphasize a seamless mix of comedy, romance, and suspense that would resonate internationally. Their vision highlighted the contrast between the town's laid-back vibe and escalating mysteries, ensuring the supernatural elements served both plot progression and character development.[3][23] With a targeted run of 16 episodes, the production was budgeted to support high production values suitable for Netflix's global platform, prioritizing quirky powers like psychometry to attract viewers seeking feel-good fantasy with investigative twists.[22][15]Casting
Han Ji-min was cast in the lead role of Bong Ye-bun, a veterinarian with psychometric abilities, drawing on her proven comedic timing in supernatural-themed projects such as Our Blues (2022). Her involvement was confirmed as part of the project's early development, with the main cast lineup including her and Lee Min-ki reported by November 2022.[24] Lee Min-ki joined as Moon Jang-yeol, the hot-blooded detective, selected for his prior experience portraying investigators in dramas like My Liberation Notes (2022).[25] The pairing of Han and Lee was highlighted in JTBC's 2023 lineup announcement in November 2022, emphasizing their chemistry for the rom-com elements.[25] EXO's Suho was announced for the role of Kim Seon-woo, the mysterious convenience store worker, in June 2023, chosen to leverage his idol crossover appeal and marking his first lead role following his military discharge in September 2022.[26] This casting aimed to balance established actors with Suho's fresh post-military debut in a major drama.[27] Supporting roles were filled progressively.[28] The complete lineup was publicly confirmed by JTBC on June 21, 2023.[29]Filming
Principal photography for Behind Your Touch commenced in September 2022 and wrapped up after five months in February 2023, allowing sufficient time for post-production ahead of the series' premiere on August 12, 2023.[30] The production was filmed entirely in South Korea, with the majority of scenes shot in South Chungcheong Province to authentically capture the rural, small-town atmosphere of the fictional Mujin.[31][30] Specific locations included rural areas evoking veterinary practices and local police environments central to the plot, contributing to the series' grounded, community-focused aesthetic.[30] During filming, the production team adhered to strict animal welfare guidelines, ensuring the safety of the various animals featured in scenes involving the veterinarian protagonist.[32]Original soundtrack
