Key Information
History
[edit]Brother Clyde was formed in late 2009, when country music singer-songwriter Jeffrey Steele, pop singer John Waite, and country singer Phil Vassar recruited Billy Ray Cyrus into the band.[4] The supergroup was announced through Cyrus' Twitter account, and reported on several music blogs.
However, in June 2010, Cyrus announced the new line-up for the band, excluding its three original members, which has led to some criticism due to the fact that the original members recruited Cyrus to the band, which has led some people in the music community to believe that Cyrus took control of the band. Cyrus also released information on their debut single, "Lately", as well as the upcoming release of its self-titled debut album, Brother Clyde.
"Lately" was released to radio on June 29, 2010, and the group's debut album was released on August 10, 2010, via Fontana Records. Cyrus produced the album himself, and wrote or co-wrote most of the songs with a "rock-n-roll attitude".[4] The music video for "Lately" premiered on July 20, 2010.[5] Cyrus also directed the music video.
To promote the release of the album, Brother Clyde performed "Lately" on the August 3, 2010 episode of Lopez Tonight.[6]

Formation (2009)
In April 2009, songwriter Jeffrey Steele announced the formation of a new supergroup called Brother Clyde, recruiting country artists Billy Ray Cyrus and Phil Vassar alongside rock singer John Waite to collaborate on a project blending their respective styles.[4] The announcement came during the Tin Pan South Songwriters Festival in Nashville, where Steele highlighted the group's intent to create music simply for enjoyment amid their demanding schedules, with initial rehearsals planned to start soon after.[4] The supergroup was conceived in late 2009 in Los Angeles as an alternative rock endeavor, allowing Cyrus to venture beyond his country music background into grunge and [Southern rock](/page/Southern rock) influences.[1] Planned as a vocal-focused ensemble, Brother Clyde was intended to feature Cyrus, Steele, Waite, and Vassar sharing responsibilities for songwriting and lead vocals, emphasizing their collective strengths as performers and creators.[1] During this early phase, the members began developing original material that would form the basis of their self-titled debut album, drawing on themes of personal reflection and social issues to craft a sound rooted in 1990s alternative rock. Subsequent adjustments to the lineup occurred due to scheduling conflicts, shifting the project toward a fuller band configuration.[1]Lineup changes and debut (2010)
In early 2010, Billy Ray Cyrus completed recording for Brother Clyde's self-titled debut album, produced under the Buena Vista and Fontana labels, marking a shift toward a full rock band sound blending grunge and Southern rock elements.[5][1] On June 30, 2010, Cyrus announced the band's restructured lineup, transitioning from its original 2009 conception as a vocal supergroup with collaborators Jeffrey Steele, Phil Vassar, and John Waite—prevented from participating due to scheduling conflicts—to an instrumental ensemble featuring drummer Samantha Maloney (formerly of Mötley Crüe, Hole, and Eagles of Death Metal), guitarist Jamie Miller (of theSTART and formerly Snot), guitarist Dan Knight, and bassist Dave Henning, with Cyrus on lead vocals.[6][1] The debut single "Lately," featuring rapper King Phaze and co-written by Morris Joseph Tancredi, was released digitally on June 29, 2010, accompanied by a music video.[7][5] The full album followed on August 10, 2010, with Cyrus having written or co-written most tracks, including a duet with Dolly Parton on "The Right Time" and a cover of Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line" recorded live in 1998.[5][6] Promotional efforts were limited, including live debut performances such as at the Worthstock festival in Kansas City on June 5, 2010, where the band played "Lately," and a showcase at the Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles on July 29, 2010.[8] In late 2010, following the album's release, Cyrus suspended activities with Brother Clyde to pursue solo projects, leading the band into an indefinite hiatus without formal disbandment.[1]Artistry
Musical style
Brother Clyde's music is primarily classified as alternative rock, incorporating elements of country rock and southern rock that blend frontman Billy Ray Cyrus's established country roots with robust rock instrumentation. This fusion creates a sound that evokes the raw energy of southern rock traditions while adopting the gritty edge of early 1990s grunge, as Cyrus himself described it as "an evolution of early '90s grunge meets southern rock."[9] The band's debut album exemplifies this hybrid, drawing on Cyrus's narrative-driven country lyricism but recontextualizing it within a harder rock framework to appeal to broader audiences.[5] Central to their sonic identity are prominent electric guitars delivering riff-heavy arrangements, paired with driving drums that propel tracks forward with intensity. Songs like "Lately" showcase this through heavy, dark hard rock structures augmented by rap verses from guest artist King Phaze, resulting in an anthemic yet brooding atmosphere that contrasts sharply with Cyrus's lighter solo country output. Layered vocals, often featuring Cyrus's versatile baritone alongside harmonies, add depth and a sense of supergroup camaraderie, enhancing the tracks' emotional weight without overpowering the instrumental drive.[3] This instrumentation shifts the band away from acoustic-driven country toward a more electrified, Los Angeles-infused rock aesthetic, reflecting the diverse backgrounds of its members in established rock acts.[1] The production on Brother Clyde's recordings emphasizes polished, radio-friendly arrangements that balance raw rock aggression with accessible melodies, facilitating crossover potential between rock and country listeners. Reviews highlight this approach in tracks like the blues-inflected "Crawl," where clean mixes underscore guitar riffs and rhythmic propulsion, avoiding overly experimental detours in favor of structured, hook-laden compositions suitable for mainstream play.[10] Overall, the band's style represents a deliberate departure from Cyrus's traditional country solo career, embracing a harder-edged rock identity that honors southern rock heritage while aiming for contemporary relevance.[9]Influences and songwriting
Brother Clyde's musical influences were drawn from the varied backgrounds of its members, blending Billy Ray Cyrus's roots in country music storytelling—evident in his narrative-driven hits like those on his 1992 debut Some Gave All—with hard rock energy from drummer Samantha Maloney's experience with Mötley Crüe, Hole, and Eagles of Death Metal, as well as grunge and nu-metal elements from guitarist Jamie Miller's tenure with Snot.[1][11] The band's songwriting process emphasized collaboration, particularly on their 2010 self-titled debut album, where Cyrus co-wrote the majority of tracks alongside contributors like Morris Joseph Tancredi (co-writer of "Lately") and James Dean Hicks (co-writer of "Son of a Gun"), focusing on introspective themes of personal redemption and strained relationships as explored in songs like "Lie to Me" and "Crawl."[5][12][13] Cyrus handled production duties, infusing a raw rock 'n' roll attitude into the sessions to capture unfiltered emotion.[11] Guest features played a key role in diversifying the sound, with New York rapper King Phaze—credited on hits like DMX's "Yonkers Anthem"—adding hip-hop-infused verses to "Lately," bridging rock riffs with urban lyricism to address contemporary struggles like war and loss.[2] This integration highlighted the band's experimental edge, contrasting Cyrus's country origins with grunge-inspired elements reminiscent of Nirvana and Alice in Chains.[9] As a supergroup, Brother Clyde leveraged the members' collective experience for an authentic rock expression, prioritizing genuine interplay over polished perfection despite the album's commercial release framework, resulting in a sound that felt immediate and unpretentious.[10]Band members
Original lineup
The original lineup of Brother Clyde was formed in 2009 as a supergroup consisting of four prominent vocalists and songwriters: Billy Ray Cyrus, Jeffrey Steele, John Waite, and Phil Vassar.[1] This initial configuration emphasized collaborative songwriting and vocal harmonies, without dedicated instrumentalists, reflecting the members' established careers in country and rock music.[1] Billy Ray Cyrus served as lead vocals and primary songwriter, bringing his experience as a country music star—best known for the 1992 hit "Achy Breaky Heart"—while transitioning toward rock influences in this project. Jeffrey Steele contributed vocals and songwriting expertise, renowned in Nashville for co-writing major country hits such as Tim McGraw's "The Cowboy in Me."[14] John Waite provided vocals and songwriting, drawing from his background as a rock veteran who fronted the band The Babys in the late 1970s and achieved solo success with the 1984 power ballad "Missing You."[15] Phil Vassar added vocals and songwriting, leveraging his status as a country artist whose debut single "Just Another Day in Paradise" topped the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in 2000.[16] The group's formation centered on this vocal and creative core, though the members' demanding schedules later prompted a shift to a more traditional band structure with added musicians.[1]Final lineup
The final lineup of Brother Clyde was assembled in 2010 to facilitate live performances and the recording of the band's self-titled debut album, shifting from the original vocal-focused core to a full instrumental ensemble emphasizing a rock sound. This configuration consisted of five members, with Billy Ray Cyrus providing continuity as the lead vocalist and guitarist from the band's inception.[3] Billy Ray Cyrus served as lead vocals and rhythm guitar, drawing on his established country-rock background to anchor the group's energetic delivery. His role extended to production oversight for the debut album, where he co-wrote much of the material to infuse a raw, rock 'n' roll edge.[5] Samantha Maloney handled drums, bringing her extensive experience from high-profile rock acts including Mötley Crüe, Hole, and Eagles of Death Metal, which contributed to the band's hard-hitting rhythm section and live intensity.[11][2] Jamie Miller played lead guitar, recognized as a session musician with credits in rock bands such as Snot and theSTART, adding aggressive riffs and solos that defined the album's alternative rock texture.[3] Dan Knight contributed guitar, supporting the dual-guitar attack as a rock performer whose work bolstered the band's onstage dynamics during their 2010 promotional appearances.[3] Dave Henning provided bass, rounding out the rhythm section with steady low-end drive essential for the full-band execution of tracks like "Lately" and enabling the group's transition to cohesive rock performances.[3] Collectively, this lineup enabled Brother Clyde to deliver high-energy live shows, such as their July 2010 Roxy Theatre debut, and realized the debut album's polished yet gritty rock aesthetic, distinguishing it from Cyrus's solo country work.[10]Discography
Studio albums
Brother Clyde released a single studio album during its existence, the self-titled Brother Clyde, on August 10, 2010, through Fontana/Buena Vista Records.[5][12] The album marked Billy Ray Cyrus's venture into alternative rock as the band's frontman and primary creative force.[5] Co-produced by Billy Ray Cyrus, Matt Bolton, and Morris Joseph Tancredi, the record was tracked across multiple studios in the Los Angeles area, including By Studios in Venice and Transformer Studios in Burbank.[13][17] Cyrus co-wrote the majority of its tracks, blending rock elements with country influences.[5] It debuted and peaked at number 40 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart.[18] The album features 9 original tracks and a cover, with guest appearances from Dolly Parton, Trace Cyrus, and King Phaze.
