Film career
Bulbuli Panja made her debut in Bengali cinema with the 2012 romantic comedy Bapi Bari Jaa, directed by Sudeshna Roy and Abhijit Guha, where she portrayed Biltu's Wife in a supporting role.[13] The film follows five childhood friends navigating post-college life, relationships, and adventures in Kolkata, with Panja's character contributing to the ensemble's comedic and familial dynamics through her portrayal of a supportive spouse. Her performance in this light-hearted narrative marked her entry into Tollywood, leveraging her television popularity to secure film opportunities.[7] In 2017, Panja appeared in three feature films, establishing her presence in diverse genres. She played a supporting role in Bolo Dugga Maiki, a romantic drama directed by Raj Chakraborty, which explores a young couple's marital challenges amid infertility, family obligations, and adoption, centered on Antor (Mimoh Chakraborty) protecting his goon father's legacy while reconciling with his wife Shaon (Oindrila Sen).[14] In Cockpit, directed by Kamaleshwar Mukherjee, she essayed the role of Captain Dibyendu Rakshit's mother (also Dibakar Rakshit's wife), adding emotional depth to the aviation thriller about a pilot's high-stakes emergency landing after an engine failure, blending suspense with family ties.) Her character underscores the personal stakes in the film's tense narrative of crisis management and heroism.[15] Additionally, in One, directed by Birsa Dasgupta, Panja took on a supporting role in this action thriller remake of the Tamil film Thani Oruvan, depicting an honest police officer's battle against corruption and a cunning antagonist. Panja continued with supporting roles in 2022 releases. In Khela Jawkhon, directed by Arindam Sil, she portrayed Urmi's mother in a psychological thriller that delves into a woman's disorienting confrontation with reality following a nightmare, emphasizing themes of perception and familial support. She also featured in Clown, directed by Rik Chatterjee, contributing to the drama's exploration of justice, protest, and resistance through an ensemble cast addressing social upheaval.[16] In 2023, Panja appeared in the political thriller Mir Zafar Chapter 2, directed by Sreelekha Mitra, playing a pivotal role in a story set against village politics and betrayal, alongside stars like Srabanti Chatterjee and Ferdous Ahmed.[17] She has also acted in short films, including the 2022 Bengali short Aaloy Fera, directed by Prosenjit Das.[18] Panja's film roles often embody archetypal supporting figures such as wives and mothers in Tollywood productions, providing emotional grounding and relational context to lead characters' journeys across comedies, thrillers, and dramas.[12]| Year | Film Title | Role | Director(s) |
