Limited public details exist on her mother or siblings, with no verified records indicating additional family members influencing her early years.

Following this debut, Chatterjee appeared in select Bengali television serials, broadening her initial familiarity with performance mediums beyond cinema. These early television engagements, though limited in scope and not individually detailed in major reports, contributed to her foundational skills in acting before her teenage years. By age 10, she had thus accumulated practical exposure to scripted roles, dialogue delivery, and industry workflows in Kolkata's regional entertainment scene. This phase preceded her more prominent lead roles in the early 2000s, during which personal life events like an early marriage temporarily paused her momentum.

Acting career

Film debut and breakthrough roles

Srabanti Chatterjee made her film debut as a child artist in the 1997 Bengali drama , directed by and produced under the banner of . She played the role of Maya, a supporting character in a story involving family separation and reunion, alongside lead performers as Sagar Mukherjee and as Shipra. This marked her first starring position as the female lead (heroine), in a narrative following a wayward youth confronting family challenges and pursuing love through boxing. The film was a box-office success, grossing significantly in West Bengal theaters and propelling Chatterjee to stardom in Tollywood at age 16, after which she took a five-year hiatus before her next release.

Chatterjee attained early commercial success with her lead role in the sports-drama (2003), directed by Rabi Kinagi, which became a hit and marked her transition from child artist to adult lead actress in Bengali cinema. The film, co-starring Jeet, grossed significantly relative to its era's Bengali productions and helped solidify her popularity among audiences in . Subsequent films further demonstrated her market appeal, including the romantic thriller Amanush (2010), a remake of the Telugu film Anthahpuram, which achieved superhit status with an estimated box office collection of ₹4 and boosted her pairing with . Political involvement

Entry into politics and motivations

Srabanti Chatterjee entered politics on March 1, 2021, by formally joining the (BJP) in , ahead of the Legislative Assembly elections scheduled to commence on March 27. She was inducted into the party in the presence of BJP West Bengal president Dilip Ghosh and national general secretary , who handed her the party flag during the ceremony. Prior to this affiliation, Chatterjee had been publicly associated with the (TMC)-led government's Kanyashree scheme, a state initiative for girl child education and welfare promoted under , though she held no formal political role. Chatterjee articulated her motivations as a desire to contribute to Bengal's development after decades of governance by the Left Front (34 years) and TMC (10 years), expressing inspiration from Narendra Modi's national vision. In statements following her induction, she emphasized working "for the people on the ground" and urged voters to give the BJP an opportunity in the elections to realize the party's goal of transforming into Sonar Bangla (Golden Bengal), a reference to economic and social prosperity. This entry marked her transition from a prominent figure in Bengali cinema to active political involvement, positioning her as one of several celebrities recruited by the BJP to bolster its campaign against the incumbent TMC in the 294-seat assembly.

2021 West Bengal election campaign

Srabanti Chatterjee joined the (BJP) on March 1, 2021, in , in the presence of senior leaders including , Dilip Ghosh, and , amid the party's efforts to recruit Bengali celebrities to bolster its challenge against the ruling (TMC) in the upcoming assembly elections. She was promptly fielded as the BJP candidate from the Paschim constituency in district, a seat previously held by TMC's Partha Chatterjee. Chatterjee's entry into politics was framed by party leaders as leveraging her popularity from Bengali cinema to connect with urban voters disillusioned with TMC governance, though critics within the opposition ecosystem dismissed such celebrity candidacies as opportunistic. During the campaign, which spanned eight phases from March 27 to April 29, 2021, Chatterjee conducted door-to-door canvassing and public rallies in Paschim, emphasizing issues like alleged TMC , post-poll violence concerns, and demands for central schemes' implementation. On April 2, 2021, she led a massive rally at Chowrasta starting at 10 AM, followed by similar events on April 4 at Mondal Para (Ward No. unspecified) from 8:30 AM. Her campaign aligned with BJP's broader narrative of "Poriborton" (change), highlighting her prior association with state schemes like Kanyashree under TMC as a point of contrast to her current stance against incumbent mismanagement, though this shift drew accusations of flip-flopping from TMC supporters. In the election held on April 17, 2021, for Paschim (part of the fourth phase), Chatterjee secured 63,894 votes but lost to TMC's Partha Chatterjee, who won with 114,778 votes—a margin of 50,884—while CPI(M)'s Nihar Bhakta received 47,509 votes. The BJP's statewide performance improved to 77 seats from 3 in 2016, but Chatterjee's defeat reflected TMC's strong incumbency in urban pockets, with in Paschim at approximately 72%. Post-results, some BJP insiders attributed losses in celebrity-contested seats, including hers, to insufficient grassroots mobilization despite high-profile endorsements.

Departure from BJP and aftermath

On November 11, 2021, Srabanti Chatterjee announced her departure from the (BJP) via a tweet, stating she was "severing all ties" with the party. She had joined the BJP on March 1, 2021, ahead of the elections, and contested unsuccessfully from the Behala Paschim constituency, where she polled 68,098 votes against the winning candidate Sujit Bose's 92,941 votes. Chatterjee cited the party's "lack of initiative and sincerity" in advancing Bengal's interests as her primary reason for quitting, expressing disappointment that it had not fulfilled commitments to the state's development post-election defeat. She had maintained a low profile within the party after the BJP's failure to form the government in May 2021, amid a broader exodus of some celebrity recruits. BJP leaders dismissed the exit as inconsequential, with state spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya stating it would have "no impact" on the party's operations or public perception in . Following her departure, Chatterjee did not affiliate with another political party or engage in visible electoral activities, shifting focus back to her acting career with no reported further political involvement through 2024.

Controversies

Scrutiny over personal relationships

Srabanti Chatterjee has faced significant public and media scrutiny due to her three marriages, each ending in divorce, which have been widely discussed in Bengali circles for their rapid dissolutions and associated personal conflicts. Her first marriage to director in 2003 produced a but ended amid allegations of discord, with the couple divorcing around 2014 after reports of extramarital involvement on her part surfaced in tabloid coverage. The second union with model Krishan Vraj in 2016 lasted less than a year, dissolving in 2017 with Chatterjee citing in interviews, though details remained private and drew limited backlash at the time. The most intense scrutiny arose from her to cabin crew member on April 19, 2019, which deteriorated within months, leading to separation by early 2020 and formal proceedings initiated by Chatterjee in September 2021 at Alipore Court in . Singh publicly accused Chatterjee of emotional abuse, body-shaming him by calling him "fat" and "incapable of sex," and defaming him on to sway public opinion during the legal battle. In response, Chatterjee sought in October 2021, escalating the feud, while Singh filed counter-cases in December 2022 alleging she withheld financial information and spread false rumors about him, potentially damaging his reputation. These exchanges fueled trolling, with netizens criticizing her for repeated marital failures and questioning her partner choices, particularly as the remained unresolved by 2024 despite Singh moving on to a new relationship. Further attention came in January 2022 when Chatterjee was photographed with an unidentified man described as a new boyfriend amid the ongoing litigation with , prompting about her personal stability and commitments. While supporters defended her autonomy in relationships, critics in media outlets highlighted a pattern of short-lived unions, attributing scrutiny to her high-profile status in Tollywood, where personal lives often intersect with professional image. No criminal charges stemmed from these disputes, but the public airing of grievances amplified perceptions of volatility in her romantic history. In April 2023, members of "The Fitness Empire," a in , North , co-owned or endorsed by Srabanti Chatterjee, filed a police complaint at Madhyamgram accusing her of . The , which opened in November 2020 at Star Mall, reportedly closed abruptly after the vacation in March 2023, with its last post on March 6, 2023, leaving subscribers unable to access services despite payments including Rs 18,000 for yearly subscriptions, Rs 7,500 for admission, and Rs 4,000 for personal trainers. Complainants alleged the gym had become unresponsive and was demanding additional fees for personal trainers, prompting demands for refunds on previously paid amounts. Chatterjee responded via a statement denying direct operational involvement, attributing her limited role to commitments with film projects and the television show Dance Bangla Dance 12. She claimed to have been "cheated" in the business and assured subscribers of refunds, while initiating legal action against individuals associated with the for alleged and financial misconduct. No further public resolution or court outcomes have been reported as of the latest available information.

Political opportunism allegations

Srabanti Chatterjee joined the (BJP) on March 1, 2021, shortly before the West Bengal assembly elections, and was fielded as the candidate from Behala West constituency against Trinamool Congress heavyweight Partha Chatterjee. She lost the election, after which the BJP failed to form the government in the state. On November 11, 2021—approximately seven months after joining and eight months after her candidacy announcement—Chatterjee resigned from the BJP, stating she was "severing all ties" due to the party's "lack of initiative and sincerity" in addressing West Bengal's development needs. Her brief tenure drew criticism amid a wave of post-election departures from the BJP in West Bengal, where she was grouped with other "prominent deserters" during a time of broader accusations of "politics of opportunism" and MLAs acting as "weathercocks" by switching allegiances for personal gain. BJP leaders downplayed the impact of her exit, asserting it would not affect the party's operations in the state. Chatterjee's move was portrayed by some observers as emblematic of celebrity politicians entering the fray for electoral visibility only to withdraw after defeat, though she maintained her decision stemmed from principled dissatisfaction rather than self-interest. No formal charges of were leveled against her in legal or official party proceedings, and her aligned with a pattern of reduced engagement by several Tollywood figures post-polls.

Public reception and impact

Srabanti Chatterjee has garnered recognition primarily through industry awards for her acting in Bengali films. In 2017, she received the Kalakar Award for Best Bengali Film Actress for her performance in Shikari. She was also honored with the "Queen of Tollywood" title at the same ceremony. For her lead role in Ardhangini (2023), she secured multiple accolades, including the West Bengal Film Journalists' Association Award, a Award at the Filmfare Awards Bangla, and the Tele Cine Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Female). However, formal accolades remain limited compared to peers, with no major national awards like National Film Awards documented.

Criticisms from media and public

Chatterjee encountered media scrutiny for entering politics with limited prior experience, particularly after joining the BJP ahead of the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections and contesting unsuccessfully from West against TMC's Partha Chatterjee. Following her electoral defeat, BJP leader and former Governor criticized her along with fellow actress candidates Parno Mitra and as "politically stupid" in tweets on May 4, 2021, faulting their campaign decisions, including traveling in an air-conditioned luxury bus deemed out of touch with voters. Her decision to quit the BJP on November 11, 2021—seven months after joining and citing the party's "lack of initiative and sincerity" for —prompted portrayals in media as a short-lived political stint, adding to perceptions of her venture as impulsive. When she attended a TMC program on November 25, 2021, BJP state president accused her of opportunism, remarking that the party was "happy to get rid of such opportunists" who offered only "lip service." Public criticism has manifested through trolling, which Chatterjee acknowledged in a February 2023 , stating that repeated scrutiny had taught her to stay calm and focus on work rather than be affected. In March 2022, she faced additional media and public attention for allegedly breaching the Wildlife Protection Act by posing with a chained during a shoot, though she claimed ignorance of the law and cooperated with forest officials' inquiry.
