Birth and family
Choi Jong-hyun, professionally known as Changjo, was born on November 16, 1995, in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, South Korea.[10] He was raised in the natural surroundings of Gangwon Province—known for its mountains and scenic landscapes—which shaped his formative years. Changjo comes from a family that includes his parents and an older sister, though details about his parents remain private. His regional background in Gangwon, a province emphasizing outdoor activities and traditional Korean rural life, contributed to a grounded childhood, with Changjo later expressing nostalgia for "those days running around in nature."[11] From a young age, Changjo displayed a keen interest in dance and music, inspired by Big Bang's Taeyang and the group's dynamic performances. His stage name, Changjo, meaning "to create" in Korean, reflects his early aspiration to innovate through dance and build a new world via artistic expression. Although he once dreamed of becoming a bodyguard, these passions in performing arts ultimately guided his path toward formal training.[10][11]Education and training
In Chuncheon, he attended local schools, including Chuncheon Middle School and Chuncheon Agricultural High School, completing his secondary education there despite the demands of his burgeoning career.[12] His family provided support during the subsequent move to Seoul, enabling him to pursue professional opportunities in the entertainment industry.[11] Around the age of 12 to 13, Changjo began exploring dance through local workshops and self-practice, which honed his skills and motivated him to seek formal entry into the K-pop training system. After auditioning at several agencies, he auditioned successfully for TOP Media via the "Andy's Choice" open audition held from June to August 2009, when he was 13 years old.[13] This marked the start of his pre-debut training period under TOP Media, beginning in late 2009, during which he underwent intensive lessons in dance, vocals, and performance to prepare for group activities.[10] By early 2010, at age 14, Changjo was officially accepted into the Teen Top lineup as the main dancer, vocalist, and maknae, following rigorous evaluations that highlighted his natural talent in choreography and stage presence.[11] The approximately one-year training phase emphasized building versatility, with a focus on synchronized group dancing and vocal harmony, aligning with TOP Media's emphasis on dynamic performances. Later, after his debut, he continued higher education by enrolling in the Practical Music program at Hoseo University in Seoul.[14]Career
Debut with Teen Top (2010–2014)
Changjo debuted as the maknae of the six-member boy group Teen Top under TOP Media on July 10, 2010, with their first stage performance of the title track "Clap" from the single album Come Into the World on MBC's Music Core.[15] The album was released the previous day, marking the group's entry into the K-pop scene with a high-energy dance track that highlighted their youthful charisma and synchronized choreography.[16] At just 14 years old, Changjo served as the main dancer, lead vocalist, and youngest member alongside CAP, Chunji, L.Joe, Niel, and Ricky, bringing dynamic dance moves and vocal support to the group's teen pop sound.[17] Teen Top's early promotions emphasized their fresh image, earning them a nomination for Best New Male Artist at the 2010 Mnet Asian Music Awards shortly after debut.[18] In 2011, Teen Top built on their debut momentum with two major releases: the mini-album Transform in January, featuring the upbeat "Supa Luv," which became a breakout hit and topped Korean music charts, and Roman in July, led by the romantic "No More Perfume on You" that showcased their evolving vocal harmonies and stage presence.[19] These promotions solidified their popularity, leading to their first music show win on SBS's Inkigayo for "Supa Luv" in February, a milestone that moved their producer Andy of Shinhwa to tears.[19] Changjo, as the main dancer, played a key role in the group's intricate routines, often taking center positions during live performances to emphasize his agile footwork and energy. The year also saw the group expand internationally, with initial fan meets in Japan laying the groundwork for future tours.[20] By 2012, Teen Top released the mini-album aRtisT in April, with the emotional ballad "To You" as the title track, demonstrating their versatility beyond dance tracks and earning critical praise for its heartfelt lyrics and arrangements.[21] The group embarked on their first Japanese showcase tour in June, performing to sold-out crowds and further boosting their Asian fanbase.[20] As the youngest member, Changjo faced challenges adjusting to the rigorous schedule and public scrutiny at a tender age, including balancing growth spurts with demanding dance practices, but he quickly grew into his role, contributing to Teen Top's reputation for polished, high-impact performances.[22] In 2013, they launched their debut European tour, "TEEN TOP SHOW! Live Tour in Europe," visiting multiple countries and performing hits like "Miss Right" from their first full-length album No.1.[21] These early years up to 2014 established Teen Top as a rising force in K-pop, with Changjo's dance prowess becoming a signature element of their global appeal.Solo debut and group activities (2015–2022)
Following his early years with Teen Top, Changjo continued to contribute significantly to the group's music and performances from 2015 onward, balancing these commitments with his growing solo pursuits. In 2015, Teen Top released their sixth EP, Natural Born Teen Top, on June 22, featuring the lead single "Ah-Ah," where Changjo provided key vocal parts and assisted in choreography development, drawing on his expertise as the group's main dancer.[23][12] The EP highlighted the group's evolving sound, blending pop and R&B elements, and Changjo's input in dance routines helped emphasize synchronized footwork that became a signature of their live stages. Over the subsequent years, Teen Top issued sporadic releases amid member schedules, including the 2020 digital single "To You 2020" on July 10—a reimagined version of their 2012 track to mark the group's 10th anniversary—where Changjo again handled prominent vocals and choreographic elements to maintain the high-energy performance style.[24][10] Changjo made his solo debut on November 16, 2019, with the digital single "Never Anything" (기다려), an R&B ballad about instant attraction, featuring rapper V-Hawk.[25] As a songwriter, he co-wrote the lyrics alongside V-Hawk and co-composed the track with Heo Seong-jin and Lee So-won, marking his first foray into full creative control outside the group.[26] The release, under TOP Media, showcased Changjo's smoother vocal delivery and emotional depth, differentiating it from Teen Top's upbeat group dynamics. Building on this, he followed with "Hurting U" on August 25, 2021, a mid-tempo track exploring heartbreak, which he fully composed and arranged independently.[27] Later that year, on December 28, Changjo collaborated with fellow Teen Top member Niel and Hwanhee on "Suddenly" for the TOP VOICE project, blending their vocals in a harmonious pop piece that underscored his versatility in joint efforts. In 2022, he released "Beautiful" on July 16, a dance-pop single he wrote, composed, and arranged, emphasizing themes of self-appreciation through upbeat rhythms and his signature dance flair.[28]Military service and post-discharge (2023–present)
Changjo enlisted for mandatory military service in the Republic of Korea Army on November 20, 2023, as the last member of Teen Top to do so, and was assigned to the military band where he performed throughout his 18-month term.[29][30] He completed his service and was discharged on May 19, 2025, marking the full reunion of Teen Top's active members. Immediately following his discharge, Changjo hosted a YouTube live stream to reconnect with fans, expressing gratitude for their support during his hiatus and sharing initial plans for his return to music.[30][31] In the months after his discharge, Changjo resumed solo activities with the release of his digital single "Trapped In My Head" on September 8, 2025, followed by "STAY DOWN" on October 1, 2025, "All In My Zone" on October 17, 2025, and "Light Up My Way" on November 3, 2025, all showcasing his continued evolution in R&B-infused pop.[32][33][4][34] He also held his first solo Asia fan meeting tour, "The Blooming Hour: CHANGJO," with the Seoul performances taking place on June 29, 2025, at SA Hall, where he performed hits and engaged directly with audiences.[35] Concurrently, he contributed to Teen Top's group promotions, including their full-unit comeback album Just 15, Just Teen Top in August 2025, their first release in two years, and a performance at the Hanter Music Festival on November 5, 2025.[3][36] Reflecting on his 15 years in the industry since Teen Top's 2010 debut, Changjo has shared in post-discharge interviews insights into his personal growth, emphasizing resilience gained from career challenges and military life, as well as ambitions to explore more songwriting and acting opportunities moving forward.[22]Filmography
Films
Changjo made his feature film debut in 2015 with Makgeolli Girls (막걸스), a comedy-drama directed by Kim Ki-young and released on May 21, 2015, in South Korea.[37] The film, with a runtime of 103 minutes, follows high school student Cho-rong (played by Hong Ah-reum), who revives her family's traditional makgeolli brewery using her late father's recipe, enlisting her friends to enter a contest amid school rivalries and personal challenges.[38] Changjo portrayed Kang-ho, the male lead and Cho-rong's romantic interest, a supportive classmate who navigates the group's dynamics and budding romance while dealing with conflicts involving a rival student.[8] His performance marked his transition from idol singer to actor, leveraging his youthful appeal and on-screen presence honed through Teen Top's high-energy performances.[39] The film received mixed reception, earning a 5.9/10 rating on IMDb from 25 users and a more positive 9.0/10 average on AsianWiki based on 51 votes, praised for its lighthearted portrayal of rural Korean life, friendship, and entrepreneurial spirit among youth.[40][37] Changjo's role as Kang-ho was noted for its sincerity and charm, contributing to the film's focus on heartfelt relationships, though the movie's limited theatrical run—screened on just 20 screens and attracting only 2,410 admissions—reflected modest box office impact.[38] As his sole major film appearance to date, the project built on Changjo's idol image by emphasizing expressive, relatable characters in feel-good narratives, aligning with his strengths in dynamic, engaging portrayals rather than incorporating explicit dance elements.[41] No additional film roles or cameos have been reported through 2025.[7]Television dramas
Changjo made his acting debut in the 2014–2015 web drama Sweden Laundry, airing on MBC Every1, where he portrayed Yong Soo-chul, a young laundry shop worker navigating personal growth and relationships in a quirky laundromat setting. His performance as the earnest protagonist contributed to the series' lighthearted tone, earning praise for his natural comedic timing in a coming-of-age story. In 2017, he took on a lead role in the mystery web drama My Brother Disappeared on Naver TV Cast, playing Gong Joong-ki, a detective unraveling family secrets and disappearances.[42] The character's investigative arc drove the plot's suspenseful narrative, blending thriller elements with emotional depth, and showcased Changjo's versatility in dramatic roles. That same year, Changjo appeared in a guest role in the tvN crime thriller Criminal Minds, depicting a part-time flyer distributor in an episode focused on psychological profiling and abductions.[8] His brief but impactful supporting performance added to the series' tense atmosphere, highlighting everyday vulnerability amid high-stakes investigations.[10] Since his military discharge in May 2025, Changjo has not appeared in any television dramas as of November 2025.[3]Variety and reality shows
Changjo gained recognition for his dance prowess on Mnet's dance competition variety show Hit the Stage in 2016, where he participated as a solo contestant in the final episode, delivering a standout performance that highlighted his precise and dynamic choreography skills.[43][44] He made guest appearances on MBC's How Do You Play? in 2023 alongside his Teen Top members, engaging in playful games and collaborative segments that showcased aspects of idol daily life and group camaraderie.[45] This episode contributed to renewed fan interest in the group, helping them re-enter the public spotlight after a period of reduced activities.[46] In 2020, Changjo appeared as a guest on episode 20 of KBS2's Idol League Season 2, participating in competitive games that allowed him to demonstrate his agility and competitive spirit in an idol-focused setting.[14] Prior to his military enlistment, Changjo joined tvN's travel variety show Music in the Trip in 2023 as a regular member of Team Danyang across its 10 episodes, where he shared personal anecdotes and behind-the-scenes insights into his career, fostering deeper connections with fans through relaxed, unscripted interactions.[14] In August 2025, following his military discharge, Changjo appeared with Teen Top on MBC every1's Weekly Idol (Episode 707, aired August 29, 2025), taking part in signature segments like random play dance and games to promote their 15th anniversary comeback album.[3]Discography
Solo singles
Changjo made his solo debut on November 16, 2019, with the digital single "Never Anything" (Korean: 기다려), featuring V-Hawk.[47] This R&B ballad explores themes of longing and waiting in a budding romance, capturing the intensity of love at first sight through its smooth vocals and emotive production.[6] The track did not enter major South Korean music charts but received positive initial feedback from fans for its heartfelt lyrics, which Changjo co-wrote.[48] Following his debut, Changjo released "Hurting U" on August 25, 2021, as his second digital single.[49] The song delves into the pain of a deteriorating relationship, blending R&B elements with introspective lyrics about emotional turmoil and regret. Like its predecessor, it did not chart prominently but was praised by listeners for its vulnerable delivery and Changjo's vocal range. In 2022, he issued "Decrescendo" on April 25, marking a shift toward more subdued, reflective tones.[50] This track examines fading emotions in love, using a gradual musical build-up to symbolize emotional decline, and garnered appreciation from fans for its artistic depth. Later that year, on July 16, "Beautiful" followed, offering a brighter contrast with uplifting R&B vibes centered on admiration and fleeting beauty in connections. These releases highlighted Changjo's growing involvement in songwriting, with each single showcasing his evolution from straightforward R&B to more nuanced explorations of love and loss. During his military service, Changjo contributed to soundtracks, including the solo track "Starry Night" from Music in the Trip OST Part. 4, released on November 25, 2023.[51] The ballad evokes serene nighttime reflections on companionship and dreams, fitting the drama's travel-themed narrative, and was well-received by audiences for its soothing melody and emotional resonance.[52] After his discharge from military service on May 19, 2025, Changjo resumed solo activities with a series of English-language singles, signaling a bolder, more experimental phase.[53] "Trapped In My Head," released on September 8, 2025, features a sensual R&B sound with themes of inescapable obsession and inner conflict, accompanied by a visual film that emphasizes evocative imagery and received enthusiastic fan acclaim for its addictive rhythm and mature visuals.[54] This was followed by "STAY DOWN" on October 1, 2025, an empowering track about resilience and self-empowerment amid challenges, which fans lauded for its motivational lyrics and dynamic production.[33] Most recently, "All In My Zone" arrived on October 17, 2025, delving into themes of immersion in personal space and identity, with its official audio highlighting introspective beats that continued to draw positive reactions from supporters for showcasing Changjo's artistic growth.[55] On November 3, 2025, he released "Light Up My Way," an R&B single about finding guidance and hope in dark times.[56] Throughout his solo discography, Changjo's style has evolved from classic R&B heartbreak anthems to more introspective works exploring identity and self-discovery, often with his direct input in composition.[57] These releases, while not achieving widespread chart dominance, have built a dedicated fanbase appreciative of his authentic emotional expression.[58]| Title | Release Date | Notes |
