Background and recording

Development

"Come Thru" was primarily written by songwriter and , with additional contributions from Usher Raymond IV, , Jr., Aubrey Robinson, Kendall Bailey, and London Holmes. The collaboration between Walker and Usher originated during the creation of Walker's debut studio album, Over It, released in 2019. Walker, who cited Usher as a key influence on her R&B sound, initially shied away from direct interaction with him, avoiding conversations at multiple industry encounters. However, Usher persisted, confronting her during their fourth meeting and insisting they discuss working together, which led to the . As Walker later recalled, "I always ran away from him until, like, the fourth time. He was, like, ‘You’re gonna talk to me!’" To honor Usher's legacy in R&B, the track incorporates a sample from his 1997 hit "You Make Me Wanna...", transforming elements of the original into a contemporary nod to nostalgia. This underscores the song's theme of relational while bridging Walker's modern style with Usher's foundational contributions to the genre.

Production

"Come Thru" was produced by , Boobie, and Roark Bailey. , Summer Walker's producer and then-boyfriend, built the song's beat around the sample from Usher's 1997 single "You Make Me Wanna...".

The track's sonic palette blends sensibilities with trap-soul influences, characterized by 's signature style of rhythmic, bass-driven beats. It progresses through verses, pre-choruses, choruses, and post-choruses, with Usher providing a solo verse, culminating in a runtime of 3:01. Instrumentation features smooth, atmospheric synths layered over deep 808 bass lines and understated hi-hats, fostering an intimate, laid-back atmosphere at a of 152 beats per minute (half-time feel of 76 BPM) in the key of . This combination evokes a modern trap-R&B hybrid while honoring Usher's classic soulful delivery alongside Summer Walker's emotive, approach.

Lyrical content

"Come Thru" centers on the theme of a casual, late-night invitation for a hookup, depicting non-committal intimacy between two lovers who prioritize physical connection over emotional attachment. The narrative unfolds from dual perspectives, with initiating the encounter in her verses by expressing lingering desire and urging spontaneity, while Usher responds in his verse with a cautious yet reciprocal interest, acknowledging the complications of their situation. The chorus, shared by both artists, reinforces mutual desire through the repeated line "Come thru, so I can do you how you like," emphasizing the song's focus on immediate gratification without deeper promises. Key lyrics highlight the spontaneity and underlying emotional guardedness of the encounter. For instance, Walker's line "Hit me up when you gettin' off work" captures the impulsive, everyday of the invitation, suggesting a low-stakes rendezvous after daily routines. Subtle references to restraint appear in phrases like "This ain't what I'm really used to" and Usher's cautionary "Be sure you're ," which a reluctance to fully invest emotionally, portraying the hookup as a temporary escape rather than a committed bond. These elements contribute to the song's portrayal of modern R&B romance as thrilling yet guarded. The dynamic builds tension through alternating verses that mimic a conversational exchange, aligning with the R&B tradition of call-and-response to heighten the seductive interplay. Walker's opening verse sets the tone of yearning, prompting Usher's responsive verse that mirrors and advances the invitation, creating a push-pull reflective of their non-committal dynamic. This structure culminates in the harmonized chorus, where their voices overlap to convey shared urgency, enhancing the track's intimate, feel.
