Fox Entertainment is an American entertainment company owned by Fox Corporation known for television production and distribution. The company was formed in 2019 after The Walt Disney Company's acquisition of 21st Century Fox, with offices in Midtown Manhattan and Los Angeles, California. The company is the successor to the Fox Entertainment Group, which shut down and merged with the Walt Disney Studios in 2019. Fox Entertainment’s programming is created for the Fox Broadcasting Company, MyNetworkTV, and Tubi;[2][3] Fox First Run serves as the syndication arm of the former, as well as a television distribution company for Fox Television Stations. It serves as the production arm for Fox.

Key Information

History

[edit]

Fox Entertainment emerged in 2019 subsequent to the acquisition of Fox's former television studio, 20th Century Fox Television, along with other assets acquired by Disney.[4] On August 6, 2019, Fox Entertainment expanded its portfolio by acquiring the animation studio Bento Box Entertainment.[5] Subsequent developments included a collaboration with Caffeine in April 2020 to produce the AniDom Beyond Show, hosted by Andy Richter.[6] Initially intending to foster scripted and unscripted projects through a division called Sidecar, aimed at developing content for both Fox's broadcast network and external platforms, Fox later dissolved Sidecar in June 2020, citing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the industry.[7][8]

In August 2021, Fox Entertainment entered into an overall deal with Gordon Ramsay to establish Studio Ramsay Global, which absorbed Ramsay's pre-existing business with All3Media and would oversee his future endeavors.[9] September 2021 saw Fox Entertainment's acquisition of TMZ from WarnerMedia for approximately $50 million.[10] Subsequent developments included signing Wonwoo Park, creator of the South Korean format King of Mask Singer, which had been adapted by Fox as The Masked Singer, to a first-look deal in November 2021, and the acquisition of television film studio MarVista Entertainment in December 2021, with an emphasis on content production for its streaming service Tubi.[11][12] Exploring content for internal Fox streaming service Fox Nation, the entertainment division created new episodes of Cops and a follow-up to A&E series Duck Dynasty called Duck Family Treasure.[13][14]

Further expansion occurred in February 2022 with the acquisition of the Gumby franchise.[15] In September 2022, Fox Corporation launched Fox Entertainment Studios, its inaugural foray into wholly in-house television production, premiering its first show, Monarch, on September 11, 2022.[16] Additionally, Fox Entertainment re-entered the international distribution arena by establishing Fox Entertainment Global.[17]

In January 2023, Fox Entertainment and Hulu announced a new multi-year deal encompassing in-season streaming rights for Fox's primetime shows.[18] By July 2023, Fox Entertainment declared its commitment to television production in Ireland, establishing the largest unscripted production hub and confirming its role as the global hub for the American hit cooking competition series Next Level Chef with Gordon Ramsay.[19][20] Amid the 2023 Actors' and Writers' strikes, the entertainment division underwent a realignment to strengthen alignment with its parent entity, Fox Corporation.

On March 27, 2024, Fox Entertainment's operations were restructured into three groups: Fox Television Network, Fox Entertainment Studios and Fox Entertainment Global, with Fernando Szew named as head of the second unit.[21] Around 30 employees were subsequently laid off in July 2024.[22]

In October 2025, Fox Entertainment invested in vertical video company Holywater. As part of the deal, Fox Entertainment Studios will create and produce more than 200 vertical video titles for My Drama over the next two years.[23]In the same month, Fox Entertainment acquired an equity stake in B.J. Novak's restaurant pop-up brand Chain, also entering a first-look deal to develop television and media projects based on the concept.[24]

Through subsidiaries such as FOX Entertainment Studios and partnerships with creators like Gordon Ramsay's Studio Ramsay Global, it maintains a growing library of owned and emphasizes provocative, audience-engaging storytelling amid an industry shift toward streaming and in-house production.

History

Origins in Fox Broadcasting

The , serving as the foundational platform for Fox Entertainment's origins, was launched on October 9, 1986, by Australian-born media proprietor via his conglomerate. This marked the first major U.S. debut since the ceased operations in 1956, positioning Fox as a challenger to the established "Big Three" networks—ABC, , and —through a strategy emphasizing youth-oriented, irreverent programming delivered to independent stations rather than traditional affiliates. The network's featured a late-night variety/talk show hosted by , airing initially on Saturdays and Sundays to response while navigating FCC regulations on network-station ownership. Early content production drew heavily from 20th Century Fox's television division, which Murdoch had bolstered through News Corporation's 1985 acquisition of a in the studio's assets, enabling in-house development of original series amid limited initial syndication options. By April 1987, Fox expanded into prime time with shows like and , the latter spawning the animated hit , which premiered as a short segment in 1987 and evolved into a full series by December 17, 1989, solidifying Fox's reputation for boundary-pushing animation and sitcoms. These efforts, produced under the umbrella of what would later formalize as Fox's entertainment studios, prioritized edgy, countercultural appeal to demographics underserved by competitors, contributing to the network's growth from a weekend-only service to a full seven-night schedule by the early 1990s. This programming foundation laid the groundwork for Fox Entertainment's evolution, as the network's success in cultivating iconic franchises demonstrated the viability of independent production models outside Hollywood's traditional , influencing subsequent expansions into , , and global syndication. By leveraging Murdoch's —combining station ownership with content creation—Fox Entertainment emerged as a prolific supplier of and scripted fare tailored to the broadcast network's disruptive .

Restructuring after Disney Acquisition

Following the completion of The Walt Disney Company's $71.3 billion acquisition of 21st Century Fox's entertainment assets on March 20, 2019, —the spun-off entity retaining , , and related properties—restructured its television production operations to operate independently from Disney-owned studios such as the former 20th Century Fox Television (rebranded as ). Fox Entertainment was formally established the following day, on March 21, 2019, as a centralized production division under , focused on creating original scripted, unscripted, and alternative programming for the Fox Broadcasting network and other distribution platforms. This formation addressed the gap left by Disney's acquisition of key production infrastructure and , shifting Fox toward in-house development, co-productions, and talent partnerships rather than relying on acquired studio output. Leadership transitioned under Charlie Collier, who had been appointed CEO of Fox Entertainment in October 2018—prior to the deal's closure—to spearhead the post-acquisition strategy, starting his role on November 1, 2018, and reporting to CEO . Collier's mandate emphasized innovative, network-specific content, including reboots and new series like the continuation of 9-1-1 under Fox's banner, while exiting executives such as Gary Newman, former chairman of Fox Television Group, facilitated the pivot to a leaner, broadcast-focused model. The restructuring prioritized cost efficiency and agility in a streaming-dominated landscape, involving the consolidation of production teams and a reduction in legacy dependencies, though specific headcount figures from the 2019 transition remain undisclosed in public reports. Subsequent refinements, such as the July 2024 layoffs of 30 positions amid broader cost-cutting, built on this foundation but were not directly tied to the initial Disney deal.

Expansion and Key Milestones (2019–2025)

Following the divestiture of select assets to , which closed on March 20, 2019, reorganized its remaining entertainment operations under Fox Entertainment, focusing on television production, animation, and alternative content development. This entity retained key creative assets and began operating independently to produce scripted, unscripted, and animated programming for broadcast, streaming, and international distribution. A pivotal early expansion occurred on August 6, 2019, when Fox Entertainment acquired , an Emmy Award-winning animation studio responsible for series such as . The deal, valued under $50 million, allowed Bento Box to function as a standalone unit while expanding Fox's animation capabilities across platforms, including content for Fox Broadcasting and . Between 2020 and 2023, Fox Entertainment prioritized internal content scaling amid industry shifts toward streaming, though major structural expansions were limited; annual reports highlighted portfolio growth through partnerships like those enhancing unscripted formats, but without large-scale acquisitions. On March 27, 2024, Fox Entertainment announced a comprehensive restructuring under CEO Rob Wade, dividing operations into three pillars: FOX Entertainment Studios for global production, FOX Television Network and FOX Entertainment Streaming & Global for linear and digital distribution, and Worldwide Sales & Licensing for international monetization. This realignment included leadership promotions, such as Michael Thorn to president of entertainment, and aimed to streamline content pipelines for multi-platform delivery; it was followed by operational adjustments, including the elimination of approximately 30 positions in July 2024 to optimize efficiency. In 2025, Fox Entertainment accelerated diversification through strategic deals. On March 6, it secured a multi-year first-look agreement with Jamie Foxx's Foxxhole Productions for unscripted and alternative content development. September saw a broadcast-direct deal with producer Hank Steinberg for priority scripted projects. Culminating the year's expansions, October 8 brought a reciprocal first-look deal with HarperCollins Publishers to adapt literary properties into television series, fostering cross-media synergies. The following day, Fox took an equity stake in HOLYWATER, a vertical video platform, committing to produce over 200 microdrama and short-form series to tap the $8 billion global market and leverage the FOX Studios Lot for creator-driven content. These moves positioned Fox Entertainment for growth in short-form digital and IP-driven programming amid evolving viewer habits.

Corporate Structure

Divisions and Subsidiaries

Fox Entertainment's structure centers on FOX Entertainment Studios, an in-house production division launched in September 2022 that develops scripted series such as Animal Control and , alongside unscripted formats. This division also incorporates animation production through its subsidiary , which operates studios in , , and , creating content like Bob’s Burgers, , and for broadcast and streaming platforms. FOX Alternative Entertainment functions as the dedicated unscripted arm, producing reality and alternative programming including The Masked Singer and LEGO Masters, emphasizing innovative formats for the FOX network and third-party partners. Complementary subsidiaries include MarVista Entertainment, acquired in fiscal 2022, which generates approximately 80 original movies annually and distributes a library exceeding 2,500 hours of content across more than 125 territories to outlets like Netflix and Hulu. Additional entities under Fox Entertainment encompass Studio Ramsay Global, a culinary-focused venture producing shows such as Next Level Chef and Kitchen Nightmares in partnership with Gordon Ramsay, and FOX Entertainment Global, handling international content licensing and sales. Syndication efforts are supported by Fox First Run, while scripted development includes XOF Productions, and entertainment news via TMZ, which delivers celebrity coverage through syndicated programs and digital platforms. Tideline Entertainment operates as an independent film label within the portfolio.

Leadership and Governance

Rob Wade has served as of Fox Entertainment since October 2022, succeeding Charlie Collier. Prior to this appointment, Wade held the position of President of Alternative Entertainment and Specials at Fox, overseeing unscripted programming such as The Masked Singer and Gordon Ramsay's Food Stars. Under his leadership, Fox Entertainment has emphasized expansion in alternative content and studio operations, including a 2024 restructuring that integrated network unscripted oversight under Michael Thorn and placed Szew in charge of studios. As a division of , Fox Entertainment's leadership operates within the broader corporate framework overseen by 's Executive Chair and CEO, Lachlan K. Murdoch, who has held these roles since the company's formation in 2019 following the acquisition of assets. Murdoch, son of founder , directs strategic decisions across 's portfolio, including television production and . Fox Entertainment's governance aligns with Fox Corporation's structure, which includes a chaired by and comprising independent members such as former U.S. House Speaker Paul D. Ryan and Australian politician . The board maintains standing committees, including the for financial oversight, the Compensation Committee for executive remuneration, and the Nominating and Committee for director selection and ethical standards, as outlined in the company's Statement of adopted in 2019. This framework emphasizes board independence, with a majority of non-management directors, and enforces policies on conflicts of interest and compliance.

Content Production

The division prioritizes narratives with procedural elements and character-driven stories, reflecting a to deliver accessible, high-stakes content amid shifting viewer habits toward streaming and linear TV. In the 2024-25 programming slate, returning dramas include 9-1-1: Lone Star, a first-responder series focusing on a firehouse, and Accused, an format examining criminal cases from the defendant's viewpoint, both sustained by strong viewership metrics despite industry-wide pressures. Additional dramas in the lineup feature Alert: Missing Persons Unit, centered on FBI agents handling abductions, and The Cleaning Lady, an action-thriller about a medical professional entangled in crime, both exemplifying Fox Entertainment's emphasis on female-led procedurals with international co-production ties. In March 2025, Fox Entertainment Studios signed a multiyear first-look deal with Jamie Foxx's production company, encompassing both scripted and unscripted projects, aimed at developing original content leveraging Foxx's creative input and industry connections. To bolster its presence in emerging digital formats, Fox Entertainment acquired an equity stake in Holywater in October 2025, a company specializing in AI-generated microdramas and vertical video content; the collaboration plans to produce over 200 original vertical series annually, focusing on short-form narratives for mobile platforms, while integrating ad sales and brand partnerships to tap into the $8 billion global vertical video market. Reception and Impact

Achievements and Commercial Success

Fox Entertainment's television operations have demonstrated robust commercial performance, with the broader Television segment reporting $9.33 billion in revenues for 2025, an 18% increase from the prior year, fueled by higher affiliate fees, from major events, and content licensing deals. This growth reflects strong advertiser demand for Fox's broadcast slate, including primetime entertainment programming that consistently ranks among the network's top performers in key demographics. Key scripted series have driven viewership and syndication value, such as 9-1-1: Lone Star, which averaged 4.3 million total viewers in the 2024-25 season, positioning it as one of Fox's strongest ongoing dramas. Unscripted hits like The Masked Singer have similarly sustained high engagement, contributing to Fox's leadership in alternative programming ratings during multiple seasons. These achievements, tracked via Nielsen metrics and official filings, affirm Fox's competitive edge in producing high-return entertainment assets despite broader industry shifts toward streaming.

Criticisms, Controversies, and Industry Challenges

Fox executives, including Alternative Entertainment president Rob Wade, defended the casting, stating there were "no regrets" as it aligned with the show's emphasis on unexpected reveals, though the incident highlighted tensions between entertainment unpredictability and public perceptions of endorsement. Similarly, host Nick Cannon's retention on The Masked Singer drew scrutiny after his 2020 dismissal from NBC's for anti-Semitic comments, with critics arguing applied inconsistent standards compared to peer networks. These episodes underscore broader critiques of Alternative Entertainment's unscripted slate for prioritizing spectacle over sensitivity to cultural flashpoints, though the division maintains such formats drive viewership in a fragmented market.
