Shortly after its release, the song was featured in the soundtrack of opera O Sétimo Guardião, by Rede Globo, and also entered the top 50 viral of Spotify globally. Giulia Be
View on GrokipediaBiography
Early life
Giulia Bourguignon Marinho, known professionally as Giulia Be, was born on August 13, 1999, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to entrepreneurs Paulo Marinho, a businessman and politician, and Adriana Marinho, a former interior designer who later became her manager.[11][12] As the youngest of four siblings, she grew up alongside brothers André Marinho, a presenter and comedian, and Danyel Marinho, in a family with ties to law and business, including several attorneys among her relatives.[13][12] Raised in Rio de Janeiro, Giulia attended local schools where she initially aspired to a career in human rights law, inspired by figures like Amal Clooney, and performed vocals at school events and Mother's Day celebrations without stage fright.[12] Her early exposure to music came naturally; she began playing the piano and guitar intuitively as a child and composed her first song at the age of eight.[12] Lacking formal music training, she developed her skills through self-directed practice, including an impromptu performance during a Maroon 5 concert while in high school, which highlighted her budding talent.[12] At age 17, Giulia launched a YouTube channel featuring simple cover songs, which quickly attracted attention from a manager within 30 days and marked her initial foray into online visibility.[12] She was accepted into prestigious institutions like Barnard College at Columbia University and several UK universities but deferred her enrollment to focus on music, ultimately not returning to formal education.[12]Personal life
Giulia Be maintains close ties with her family, who have provided ongoing support since her professional debut. Her mother, Adriana Marinho, transitioned from an interior design career to become her full-time manager in 2019, advocating for key releases like the breakthrough single "Menina Solta" and securing a global publishing deal with Sony Music Publishing.[12] Following her signing with Warner Music Brasil in 2018, her parents endorsed her decision to pursue music full-time at age 17, allowing her to postpone college.[12] She has brothers, including André Marinho, a political commentator for a Brazilian conservative radio station, and the family resides within walking distance in Rio de Janeiro, where they occasionally appear together on her social media.[14][12] In her romantic life, Be announced her engagement to Conor Kennedy, an American environmental activist and son of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., on August 12, 2024, after dating since February 2022.[15][16] Kennedy proposed with a Tiffany & Co. ring during a private moment, and the couple, who met in Los Angeles, blend their Brazilian-American backgrounds in their relationship.[17] Be relocated from Brazil to the United States to be with him, marking a significant personal milestone.[15] Be prefers to shield her personal life from public scrutiny, rarely delving into non-professional topics in interviews, which focus primarily on her music and acting projects.[18] This approach underscores her emphasis on privacy amid a rising career, with limited disclosures about work-life balance or personal challenges during tours. As of 2025, she and Kennedy reside primarily in Los Angeles, while maintaining strong connections to her roots in Rio de Janeiro; the couple has no children.[14]Career
Musical career
Giulia Be signed with Warner Music Brasil in 2018 at the age of 19, marking the start of her professional music career.[2] Her debut single, "With You" in collaboration with DJ Zerb, was released the same year and introduced her to audiences with its electronic pop sound.[2] In 2019, Be achieved her breakthrough with the single "Too Bad," which served as the soundtrack for the popular Brazilian telenovela O Sétimo Guardião, boosting her visibility on national television.[19] Later that year, "Menina Solta" became a major hit, reaching number one on the Portuguese singles chart and earning a double diamond certification in Brazil from Pro-Música Brasil for over 200,000 equivalent units sold.[20] This success solidified her presence in both Brazilian and Portuguese markets, with the track accumulating millions of streams and establishing her as an emerging pop artist. Be continued her momentum with the release of her debut extended play, Solta, in May 2020, which featured tracks building on her early hits and peaked at number 47 on the Portuguese albums chart.[21] Following a series of singles in 2021, including collaborations that expanded her reach, she delivered her debut studio album Disco Voador in November 2022 under Warner Music Brasil. The album received a deluxe edition in 2023, incorporating additional tracks and further showcasing her evolution in pop production. In October 2024, Be signed with Sony Music Latin Iberia to pursue international expansion, aligning with her growing global fanbase.[2] This move preceded a new creative era announced in October 2025, highlighted by the release of "fool for love" on October 26 as an upbeat dance-pop track, followed by the trilingual pop single "bye bye bahía" on October 31, and "viciada" earlier in the year.[22] The self-titled project GIULIA BE plans to include 21 original songs in English, Portuguese, and Spanish through 2026.[22] As of November 2025, Be's music had surpassed 1 billion total streams on Spotify, reflecting her commercial impact.[3] She supported these releases with live tours across Brazil and Portugal from 2022 to 2024, performing at venues and festivals to connect with fans in her home market and key international territory.[23]Acting career
Giulia Be entered the acting field without formal training, leveraging her experience from music videos and performances to secure her debut role through a Netflix opportunity announced in November 2021. She was cast alongside Henry Zaga in the Brazilian romantic drama Beyond the Universe (original title Depois do Universo), directed by Diego Freitas, with filming commencing that month in São Paulo. The production marked her first foray into narrative acting, where she portrayed Nina, a musically gifted teenager navigating lupus and the wait for a kidney transplant, infusing the character with authenticity drawn from her own background as a singer-songwriter.[24][25] The film premiered on Netflix on October 27, 2022, earning praise for Be's debut performance, particularly her portrayal of a resilient, piano-playing protagonist whose emotional vulnerability and on-screen chemistry with Zaga resonated with audiences and critics alike. Reviewers highlighted her natural expressiveness and ability to convey the complexities of youth amid adversity, contributing to the movie's status as one of Netflix Brazil's most-watched non-English language titles at launch. This acting milestone intersected directly with her music career, as Be composed and performed original songs for the soundtrack, including the titular track "Depois do Universo," which coincided with the release of her debut album Disco Voador shortly after the film's premiere.[26][27][4] Following the film's success, Be paused music activities for several months to focus on the project, demonstrating early challenges in balancing acting commitments with her touring and recording schedule. While she has since prioritized her musical endeavors, including international releases and live performances, Be has occasionally referenced the acting experience as a fulfilling extension of her artistry, though no subsequent roles have been announced as of 2025.[12][2]Artistry
Musical style
Giulia Be's music is rooted in pop and contemporary R&B, frequently incorporating Latin pop, dance-pop, nu-disco, and synthwave elements to create a vibrant, genre-blending sound. Her work draws from Brazil's tropicalismo movement, merging it with disco and urban influences to evoke a sense of cultural fusion and rhythmic energy. This foundation is evident in her debut album Disco Voador (2022), where synth-driven tracks and Latin-infused beats highlight her ability to balance accessibility with experimental flair.[28] Her production style has evolved through collaborations with international teams following her 2024 signing with Sony Music Latin Iberia, emphasizing polished, multicultural arrangements.[2] For instance, the 2025 single "fool for love," released on October 23, 2025, results in lush pop textures with upbeat dance elements that underscore themes of romantic vulnerability.[29] Similarly, "bye bye bahia," released on October 31, 2025, integrates Latin rhythms including reggaeton and dembow with synthesizers to craft an empowering Spanish-language track, marking a shift toward more organic and border-crossing sonics as the second chapter in her ongoing trilingual audiovisual project GIULIA BE, which plans 21 songs in English, Portuguese, and Spanish through 2026.[8][22] Critics have praised Be for seamlessly blending global pop sensibilities with Brazilian identity, creating catchy, heritage-infused melodies that resonate internationally.[6] Her vocal delivery, often emotive and layered, complements these productions, as seen in empowerment anthems like "menina solta," which maintains an upbeat tempo of 92 BPM to convey themes of self-assurance.[30] This approach has positioned her as a promising voice in contemporary Brazilian pop, evolving from initial teen-oriented releases to a more mature, multilingual catalog by 2025.[22]Influences
Giulia Be's musical inspirations draw heavily from Brazilian icons who emphasize emotional expression and cultural fusion. She has cited Anitta for her empowering pop anthems that blend urban rhythms with global appeal, Marisa Monte for her nuanced vocal phrasing and introspective songcraft, and Tropicália pioneers like Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, Rita Lee, and Gilberto Gil for their innovative mix of traditional Brazilian elements with experimental sounds. These influences are evident in her incorporation of poetic Portuguese lyrics and rhythmic vitality, as seen in tracks inspired by Gal Costa's "Objeto Não Identificado" on her album Disco Voador. Internationally, Be admires artists such as Janis Joplin and Amy Winehouse for their raw vulnerability in conveying personal turmoil.[31][32][18] Her cultural roots in Rio de Janeiro profoundly shape her creative output, immersing her from childhood in Brazil's vibrant musical landscape. Raised in a city pulsing with samba, funk carioca, and bossa nova traditions, Be absorbed these genres through local scenes and family exposure, fostering a lifelong affinity for rhythmic, dance-oriented expressions. This foundation led to her strategic use of Portuguese in songs like "Menina Solta," which broadened her appeal across Lusophone markets by evoking Brazil's communal energy and resilience. Additionally, her eclectic tastes—spanning classical music, 1970s rock, and global pop—reflect a home environment that valued creativity, with her mother Adriana Marinho serving as manager.[18][33][32] Thematically, Be's work evolved from empowerment and self-love in her early releases to deeper explorations of vulnerability and healing. "Menina Solta" (2019) embodies independence and female autonomy, written in just 15 minutes as a spontaneous declaration of breaking free from relational constraints, resonating as a global anthem for young women asserting their freedom. By her 2025 singles like "fool for love," co-written with her brother Dany Marinho, she delves into romantic vulnerability and emotional recklessness, allowing herself to embrace love's chaos amid heartbreak. Her family's artistic legacy, including collaborative songwriting sessions with Dany, further nurtures this introspective turn.[18][34][33][35][22] Be's artistry matured post-2022 with Disco Voador, transitioning from teen-centric, fun-oriented pop to more introspective narratives influenced by extensive global tours that exposed her to diverse audiences and languages. These experiences prompted a multilingual approach in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, allowing her to weave personal healing themes—such as overcoming insecurities—with broader emotional empathy, marking a phase of greater maturity and global connectivity.[31][32][35]Discography
