Early life
Jay Mingi was born on 22 October 2000 in Hackney, London, England.[5][1] There is limited public information available regarding Mingi's family background or early upbringing.[1] Mingi developed an early interest in football, with his initial exposure coming through playing in local parks and at school in Hackney. He stands at a height of 1.85 m (6 ft 1 in), a physical attribute that later influenced his development as a defender.[1] Mingi transitioned to organized youth football by joining the academy at West Ham United.[6]Youth career
Mingi joined the West Ham United academy at the age of seven in 2007, beginning his youth football development in the club's schoolboy setup.[6] Over the next 11 years, he progressed through the age groups, regularly featuring for the U16 side before signing a two-year scholarship deal in the summer of 2017.[7] [6] In the 2017–18 season, he made 16 appearances (all starts) for the U18 team in the U18 Premier League. He appeared in 3 league matches the following season and made 1 appearance for the U23s, while training with that squad.[8] Despite his contributions, Mingi was released by West Ham in the summer of 2019 at the age of 18, as the club did not offer him a professional contract amid intense competition for places in defensive positions and his declining status in the youth team hierarchy.[7] Shortly after, in April 2019, he trialed successfully with Charlton Athletic and signed a professional contract in May, transitioning to their academy where he trained primarily with the U23 side during the 2019-2020 season.[9] [10] Throughout his youth career at both clubs, Mingi participated in development leagues such as the U18 Premier League and cup competitions including the FA Youth Cup, where he demonstrated versatility by playing in multiple backline roles, including centre-back and defensive midfielder.[8] [11] However, he did not achieve any major honors during this period.[8]Club career
Charlton Athletic
Mingi joined Charlton Athletic's academy in 2019 following his release from West Ham United, before securing a one-year professional contract extension in July 2020 at the age of 19.[12] This deal came after a period of development in the club's youth setup, where he contributed to under-23 matches and trained alongside senior players to enhance his physical conditioning and positional understanding.[13] His senior debut arrived on 30 September 2020 in the EFL Trophy group stage against Brighton & Hove Albion U21s, where he started at right-back in a 1–1 draw at The Valley.[14] Mingi's versatility across defensive roles, honed during his youth career, enabled this opportunity in a backline reshuffled by injuries and rotations. He made one further appearance that season on 10 November 2020, again in the EFL Trophy, scoring his first senior goal—assisted by Marcus Maddison—in a 3–1 group stage victory over Leyton Orient.[15] These two outings marked his only senior exposure at Charlton, with no League One starts or substitute appearances due to strong competition from established defenders like Ryan Inniss and Jason Pearce. Throughout the 2020–21 campaign, Mingi served primarily as a backup option, regularly participating in first-team training sessions to build tactical awareness and physicality under manager Lee Bowyer.[16] Despite the limited minutes, the experience provided valuable exposure to professional environments, though he sought greater opportunities elsewhere. In May 2021, Charlton offered him a new contract extension, but he was ultimately released on 1 July 2021 at the end of his deal.[17][18]Portsmouth
Mingi joined Portsmouth on a free transfer on 24 September 2021, signing a one-year professional contract following a successful trial after his release from Charlton Athletic.[19] The versatile midfielder, capable of playing in defence, was immediately loaned to National League club Maidenhead United on 5 October 2021 for an initial one-month spell, which was extended until 3 January 2022 to aid his development in senior non-league football. During this period, he made 10 appearances and scored once, netting in a 3–2 league victory over Wrexham on 26 October 2021. Upon returning to Portsmouth, Mingi made his league debut on 5 March 2022, substituting in the 78th minute as a midfielder during a 4–0 home win against Accrington Stanley in EFL League One.[20] Over the subsequent seasons, he featured sparingly as a squad player, often in defensive rotations, accumulating 20 league appearances without scoring between 2021 and 2023.[8] In May 2022, the club triggered an option to extend his contract by a further year.[21] Mingi contributed to Portsmouth's mid-table finish in the 2022–23 League One season, where they ended eighth with 70 points, four short of the playoffs, though his opportunities were limited by injuries, including a knee issue that sidelined him for much of the campaign, and competition for places.[22][23] Mingi's time at Portsmouth concluded in June 2023 upon the expiry of his contract; despite an offer for a new three-year deal, he opted to leave as a free agent in pursuit of more consistent playing time.[24]Colchester United
Mingi joined Colchester United on 1 September 2023, signing a two-year contract on a free transfer following his departure from Portsmouth.[25] The 22-year-old defender quickly established himself as a right-back in EFL League Two, making his debut in a 0–2 league defeat to Tranmere Rovers on 9 September 2023, where he came on as a substitute after 33 minutes.[26] During the 2023–24 season, Mingi featured in 25 league appearances for Colchester, starting 19 of them, and made a total of 28 outings across all competitions.[26] He scored his sole goal for the club on 29 March 2024, netting a dramatic stoppage-time winner in a 2–1 victory over Newport County that proved crucial in their survival bid.[27] The strike, a powerful finish from the edge of the box, was later voted Colchester's Goal of the Month for March. Mingi contributed to Colchester's defensive efforts during a challenging campaign that saw the team flirt with relegation, ultimately finishing 22nd and securing their League Two status by three points.[28] He demonstrated versatility by occasionally shifting to centre-back, where he impressed with solid performances, including in draws against promotion contenders Walsall and Mansfield Town in March 2024.[29] His progress was hampered by injuries, notably a hamstring issue sustained in November 2023 that sidelined him for 59 days and caused him to miss 12 matches until mid-January 2024.[30] Additionally, a red card for two bookings in a 5–0 loss to Forest Green Rovers on 14 October 2023 led to a one-match suspension.[31] Mingi departed Colchester at the end of his contract in June 2024, having agreed to join newly promoted League One side Stockport County for an undisclosed fee on 24 May 2024.[32]Stockport County
Mingi joined Stockport County on 24 May 2024, becoming the club's first summer signing after their promotion to EFL League One, securing a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee from Colchester United.[33][34] During the 2024–25 season, he competed for the right-back position, making 11 league appearances without scoring goals. Mingi started in several opening fixtures, including the 2–0 victory over Cambridge United on 10 August 2024, and adapted to the increased pace of League One competition. He also featured in one EFL Cup match that season.[35] On 1 September 2025, Mingi moved to EFL League Two club Crewe Alexandra on a season-long loan to secure regular playing time and support his development.[36][37] He made his debut for Crewe the next day, earning his first minutes in a 7–1 EFL Trophy win against Chesterfield on 2 September 2025.[38] By mid-November 2025, Mingi had featured in multiple matches for Crewe, including League Two fixtures and the FA Cup first-round loss to Doncaster Rovers on 1 November 2025, where he started and contributed to build-up play.[39] He started in the EFL Trophy group-stage match against Burton Albion on 11 November 2025, contributing to Crewe's 3–1 victory, and was an unused substitute in the 0–0 League Two draw against Oldham Athletic on 15 November 2025.[40][41]Playing style and statistics
Playing style
Jay Mingi primarily operates as a right-back or centre-back, with versatility extending to a defensive midfield role focused on ball-winning duties. His ability to switch positions, such as from central midfield to wide centre-back or right wing-back, has been highlighted by coaches for demonstrating tactical intelligence.[34][42] Mingi's key strengths lie in his defensive acumen and ball progression from the back. He excels at ball interceptions and demonstrates strong ball-carrying. His physical presence, aided by a 185 cm frame, contributes to his overall defending. However, Mingi has areas for improvement, including passing and aerial duels. He tends to commit fouls frequently, reflecting an aggressive ball-winning style. Over his career, Mingi has evolved from a raw academy defender into a more composed ball-player, particularly during his time at Colchester United, where a strong second-half performance showcased enhanced progressive passing under coaching emphasis on versatility.[42][33]Career statistics
As of 19 November 2025, Jay Mingi has recorded 59 appearances and 2 goals in league competitions, alongside 78 total appearances and 4 goals across all competitions.[43][44] The table below details his professional statistics, covering EFL League One and League Two, National League (during loans), EFL Trophy, FA Cup, and EFL Cup.| Season | Club | League (Apps/Goals) | Cup (Apps/Goals) | Total (Apps/Goals) |
