Plot
Raundal centers on Shiva, a hot-headed young farmer in rural Maharashtra's Ahmednagar district, who lives with his father, mother, and grandfather in a close-knit family that relies on agriculture for survival.[4] Shiva Jadhav wants to serve the country by joining the army but he fails in his training and gets back to his village, leading him to embrace farming as his path forward, where he demonstrates exceptional skill in cultivating sugarcane.[1] His family's dynamics are marked by traditional values from his father and grandfather, contrasted with his mother's supportive nature, creating tensions as they navigate daily hardships together.[4] The narrative follows Shiva's initial success with a bountiful harvest, which promises prosperity but quickly turns into economic distress when a corrupt sugar mill syndicate exploits local farmers by offering unfair prices for their produce.[3] This central conflict highlights the systemic barriers in rural agriculture, as Shiva grapples with the injustice of being unable to sell his crops at a viable rate despite his expertise in growing them.[1] The story escalates into an action-drama as Shiva rallies against the powerful local structures controlling the mills, fighting for fair pricing and justice for himself and his village.[3] Throughout, the film underscores themes of rural exploitation and a farmer's unyielding resilience in the face of systemic corruption within the agricultural sector, portraying the harsh realities of Maharashtra's sugarcane economy without delving into resolution details.[1]Cast
Bhausaheb Shinde portrays the protagonist Shiva Jadhav, a resilient sugarcane farmer navigating personal and familial challenges in rural Maharashtra.[7] His performance marks a prominent lead role following his earlier work in the film Khwada.[8] Neha Sonawane plays Nanda, Shiva's love interest who provides emotional support.[7][3] Yashraaj Dimbale appears as Bittu Sheth, the corrupt sugar mill owner and main antagonist.[9][4] Surekha Dimbale takes on the role of Shashi Jadhav, Shiva's mother offering maternal guidance within the household.[7] Ganesh Deshmukh embodies Gulbya Jadhav, Shiva's father and a traditional family figure.[7] Shivraj Walvekar features in a supporting role as Anna (Vikram Shinde), father of the antagonist Bittu Sheth.[9][4] Sanjay Lakade plays Pandurang Jadhav, Shiva's grandfather.[4]Production
Development
Raundal was directed and written by Gajanan Nana Padol, who drew inspiration from the real-world exploitation faced by farmers in Maharashtra's sugarcane belt, where issues like unfair pricing from sugar mill syndicates have long plagued small-scale agricultural producers.[3][10] The film emerged as an action-drama to spotlight agricultural corruption, with Padol emphasizing an authentic depiction of rural life to resonate with audiences familiar with these struggles.[4] Development of the project began around 2022 under the banner of Bhoomika Films and Entertainment, in association with Rise Business Group.[11] Key producers included Balasaheb Shinde, Dr. Purushottam Bhapkar, Pramod Bhaskar Chaudhary, and Bhausaheb Shinde, who also stars as the lead Shiva Jadhav.[11][12] Scripting focused on weaving these socio-economic themes into a narrative of resistance, prioritizing grounded storytelling over sensationalism to highlight systemic injustices in the farming community.[3] The production adopted a low-to-mid budget approach, estimated at approximately ₹5 crore, characteristic of many Marathi films aiming for regional impact without heavy reliance on visual effects.[11][13] Financing emphasized cost-effective choices, such as utilizing practical rural settings to capture the essence of Maharashtra's agrarian landscape, aligning with Padol's vision for realism.[4]Filming
Principal photography for Raundal took place in 2022, extending over several months primarily in rural Maharashtra to authentically depict the farming landscapes essential to the narrative.[14] The film was shot mainly in sugarcane fields and villages across Maharashtra for exterior scenes, capturing the everyday life of agricultural communities.[4] The background score was noted for its impact in enhancing the film's authenticity.[4]Release and distribution
Theatrical release
Raundal was granted a UA certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for its Marathi version on March 1, 2023, with a runtime of 146.32 minutes for theatrical release.[14] The film was released on March 3, 2023, across theaters in Maharashtra and select cities in India.[2] The promotional campaign for Raundal emphasized the film's themes of a farmer's struggle against exploitation, beginning with a motion poster unveiled on January 30, 2023, followed by the official trailer on February 20, 2023, distributed via YouTube to generate buzz among Marathi-speaking audiences.[15][12] Marketing efforts included posters that highlighted the action-oriented narrative and rural setting, shared through social media platforms and local promotional events targeting both urban and rural viewers in Maharashtra.[16] These strategies aimed to connect with audiences by underscoring the protagonist's fight for fair prices, leading to an initial box office opening that reflected strong regional interest.[5]Home media
Following its theatrical run, Raundal became available for digital streaming on Amazon Prime Video starting August 11, 2023, where it is offered in its original Marathi language with English subtitles.[17][18] The platform's global reach has made the film accessible to international audiences, particularly the Marathi diaspora, though availability may vary by region due to licensing.[19] The film received its world television premiere on the regional channel Pravah Picture on October 8, 2023, providing broadcast access to viewers in Maharashtra and surrounding areas.[20] No official physical media releases, such as DVD or Blu-ray, have been announced or distributed through major retailers as of November 2025. Ancillary rights for Raundal were acquired by Amazon Prime Video post-theatrical release, extending the film's reach beyond cinemas and contributing to its sustained visibility among streaming audiences.Reception
Critical reception
Raundal garnered mixed reviews from critics, who praised its authentic depiction of rural farmer struggles while critiquing its narrative execution. On IMDb, the film holds an average user rating of 7.3 out of 10, based on 10,297 votes.[1] No Tomatometer score is available on Rotten Tomatoes, as insufficient critic reviews have been aggregated.[21] Anub George of The Times of India awarded the film 3 out of 5 stars, commending its "good bones" and effective action sequences that provide "cathartic moments of violent comeuppance," but noting it falters as a one-time watch due to mid-range acting and uneven pacing.[3] The review highlights the authentic portrayal of a quick-tempered farmer's fight against corrupt sugar mill syndicates, aligning with broader acclaim for the film's raw energy in addressing real-world agricultural exploitation in Maharashtra.[3] Lead actor Bhau Shinde's performance as the protagonist Shiva was seen as solid, effectively capturing the character's hot-headed resilience amid rural hardships, though some found the supporting cast lacking conviction.[3][4] Critics pointed to an uneven screenplay and predictable plot developments as major drawbacks, with the single-track narrative failing to sustain interest over its lengthy runtime.[4] Some over-the-top dramatic elements, including excessive violence, were noted as detracting from the story's emotional depth, despite its strong thematic foundation in farmer issues.[6] The Film Information review echoed this, describing the direction and editing as average and the overall entertainment value as insufficient to quench audience expectations, though background music added impactful authenticity.[4] Overall, Raundal was appreciated for its social relevance within Marathi cinema, spotlighting pertinent issues like fair pricing for harvests, but received mixed feedback on its entertainment quotient, with execution often undermining its promising premise.[3][4]Box office
Raundal collected approximately ₹2.8 crore at the box office in India as of its theatrical run in 2023, on a reported budget of around ₹3 crore.[22] The film opened with ₹0.10 crore on its first day, building to ₹0.36 crore over the opening weekend, and maintained a modest performance throughout its run.[23] [24] It was considered a semi-hit, recovering most of its costs, though it did not rank among the top 10 highest-grossing Marathi films of 2023 according to some trackers.[25][22] The film performed primarily in theaters across Maharashtra with limited national distribution; its release on Amazon Prime Video provided additional ancillary revenues, contributing to overall financial viability.[18] Positive word-of-mouth from audiences helped sustain its theatrical run.[23]Soundtrack
Composition
The soundtrack of Raundal was composed by Harsshit Abhiraj, who crafted a fusion of traditional Marathi folk elements—such as the rural "Shramgeet" (labor songs) inspired by Maharashtra's harvest traditions—with dramatic orchestral arrangements to amplify the film's portrayal of agrarian struggles and intense action sequences.[26] The album comprises six tracks with a total runtime of 29 minutes and 53 seconds, emphasizing melodic simplicity and emotional depth to resonate with themes of rural hardship.[27] Lyrics were written by Dr. Vinayak Pawar and Balasaheb Shinde, while prominent vocalists included Javed Ali, Vaishali Made, Sonu Nigam, Divya Kumar, and Ganesh Chandanshiv; the background score was handled separately by Rohit Nagbhide to provide atmospheric tension.[28][29] Recording occurred post-filming at Yashraj Studios in Mumbai, where music programmers and arrangers like Avi Lohar collaborated with Abhiraj to layer authentic folk instrumentation over orchestral swells, ensuring the score supported the narrative without dominating the dialogue.[30] The title track, "Dhagan Aabhal," sung by Javed Ali and Vaishali Made with lyrics by Pawar, stands out for evoking the farmer's emotional turmoil through imagery of gathering clouds and inner storms, symbolizing drought and despair.[31] Songs like "Bhalari" further integrate folk rhythms to underscore scenes of rural labor, blending cultural authenticity with cinematic drama.[26]Track listing
