Early life
Stephen Puth was born on April 13, 1994, in Rumson, New Jersey.[8] He grew up in a musically inclined family as the younger brother of singer Charlie Puth and twin sister Mikaela Puth, with parents Debra, a music teacher and HBO commercial writer, and Charles Otto Puth Sr., a builder and real estate agent.[9][10][2] From a young age, Puth was exposed to music through his mother's classical piano lessons, which she provided to all three of her children, fostering an early family encouragement of musical pursuits.[9][11] Puth learned the basics of piano through this familial guidance and taught himself guitar in seventh grade before pursuing more structured training.[11] His brother Charlie's rising fame in the mid-2010s further highlighted the supportive musical environment of their upbringing.[8]Education
Puth attended Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania, where he majored in history.[12] During his studies, he took time off for a finance internship and later a full-time job in the field, but found it unfulfilling.[13] After leaving the finance role, Puth relocated to Los Angeles and secured an internship at a record company, which provided his initial immersion in the professional music industry.[13] There, he downloaded music editing software and began writing songs as a hobby, initially intending them for other artists.[13] This period marked a pivotal transition, as Puth decided to commit to music full-time, drawing on encouragement from his brother Charlie and his growing passion for songwriting over his academic pursuits.[12]Career
Songwriting and early career
Stephen Puth entered the music industry as a songwriter following a brief stint in finance after college, which he found unfulfilling. Around 2016, he relocated to Los Angeles and secured an internship at a record company, where he began experimenting with music production software and crafting songs for other artists.[14][13][15] His initial foray into professional songwriting was encouraged by his brother, Charlie Puth, who urged him to channel personal experiences, such as heartbreak, into lyrics after hearing Stephen describe emotions through everyday analogies. Puth quickly built a portfolio of pop and R&B tracks tailored to emerging artists in the teen pop scene, focusing on relatable themes of romance and youth.[16] Key early credits included co-writing "Are You Ready?" for British band The Vamps on their 2017 album Night & Day, a high-energy pop track that showcased his knack for catchy hooks. He also contributed to Daniel Skye's 2017 single "I Want You" (featuring XXXTentacion), blending R&B elements with introspective lyrics about desire. Puth provided songs for groups like PRETTYMUCH, Jack & Jack, and singer Stanaj, helping establish his reputation in the burgeoning pop landscape.[17][8] Remaining unsigned through 2017 and 2018, Puth's co-writes during this period, including additional pop-oriented collaborations, drew attention from label executives and paved the way for his signing with Arista Records in 2018. This pre-label phase solidified his skills in crafting commercially viable material for younger audiences.[14][15]Solo releases and performances
In 2018, Stephen Puth signed a recording contract with Arista Records, marking his transition from behind-the-scenes songwriting to a front-facing solo artist.[18] This deal paved the way for his debut as a lead performer, with Puth releasing a series of pop-oriented singles that showcased his smooth vocals and emotional lyricism. Puth's debut single, "Sexual Vibe," arrived on December 5, 2018, introducing his groove-driven style with themes of initial attraction.[18] He followed with the ballad "Half Gone" in March 2019, exploring heartbreak and vulnerability.[19] That June, "Look Away" was released, a reflective track co-written with his brother Charlie Puth, which charted in the top 40 on the Billboard Pop Airplay chart.[20] Closing out the year, "Crying My Eyes Out" dropped in December 2019, delving into post-breakup sorrow. Building on this momentum, Puth issued "Watching You Walk Away" in May 2020, a solo single emphasizing introspection and farewell. Later that October, he collaborated with Sofia Reyes on "Whose Arms," a duet blending pop and Latin influences while positioning Puth as the lead vocalist.[21] Around the same time, Puth contributed vocals to the collaborative single "Like Gold" with Loud Luxury and Frank Walker, highlighting his versatility in dance-pop settings.[22] In late 2020, Puth released the EP Like Gold, featuring solo tracks including the title song. Puth began performing live to promote his releases, opening for Norwegian singer Astrid S during her Los Angeles and New York shows in 2019.[23] Into 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, he participated in virtual events like the Global Citizen's Together At Home series in April and delivered intimate sets, including a February appearance at iHeartRadio's KIIS Next Up.[24][25] More recently, Puth returned with "Steady Love" in June 2024, a upbeat track co-led with producer John De Sohn that celebrates enduring relationships.[26] He followed this with "Road Runs Out" in May 2024, partnering with Sonny Wern on a resilient pop anthem about pursuing love against odds.[27]Production and collaborations
Following his early songwriting endeavors, Stephen Puth expanded into music production after signing with Arista Records in 2018, focusing on pop and electronic dance music (EDM) genres.[5] Puth's production credits include the 2020 track "Like Gold" for the Canadian duo Loud Luxury, featuring vocals from Puth himself alongside Frank Walker, which blended uplifting house elements with pop sensibilities.[22] He has also produced for electronic artists such as Lost Frequencies and Vicetone, contributing to their dance-oriented releases in the early 2020s.[5] Additionally, Puth co-produced "Talk" for the Norwegian duo Marcus & Martinus on their 2024 album Unforgettable, a mid-tempo pop song emphasizing emotional introspection through layered keyboards and piano arrangements.[28][29] In recent collaborations, Puth featured on "Close Your Eyes" with Swedish producer Lucas Estrada and Polish DJ Tribbs, released in January 2024 as a melodic house track exploring themes of relational distance.[30] Later that year, in August 2024, he collaborated again with Tribbs on "River," an EDM single with soaring synths and vocals reflecting perseverance and pursuit.[31] His most recent project, the October 2025 single "SOS" with Polish DJ Gromee, fuses deep house rhythms with urgent pop hooks to convey themes of emotional rescue.[32] Puth has further extended his production work into K-pop, co-producing the 2021 track "Hate that..." for SHINee member Key (featuring Taeyeon), an R&B-infused song with guitar-driven melodies and introspective lyrics about lingering resentment in relationships.[33] He has also contributed to various dance and electronic remixes, enhancing tracks with polished beats and vocal integrations.[5] Throughout the 2020s, Puth's production career has evolved toward international partnerships, spanning European markets with artists from Norway, Sweden, and Poland, as well as Asian projects in South Korea, broadening his influence beyond North American pop scenes.[5][32]Artistry
Musical style
Stephen Puth's music is primarily rooted in pop, infused with R&B and soul elements that lend a smooth, emotive quality to his vocal delivery.[12] His voice often carries dusky, romantic tones, making it particularly suited for ballads and mid-tempo tracks where emotional depth is emphasized.[34] This style is evident in his expressive phrasing, which blends soulful influences with contemporary pop accessibility, creating an intimate yet radio-friendly sound.[12] Signature elements of Puth's work include groove-oriented tracks driven by piano melodies and self-taught guitar riffs that merge classic and modern sensibilities.[14] Classically trained on piano, he incorporates its melodic foundation into many compositions, while his guitar work adds layered, riff-based textures that evoke a retro-modern fusion.[35] These instruments contribute to a laid-back yet engaging pop framework, often highlighting romantic and introspective themes through rhythmic grooves and harmonic richness.[1] Puth's style has evolved from upbeat, vibe-focused pop in his early singles, such as "Sexual Vibe," which features sultry, retro-leaning grooves, to more acoustic introspection in tracks like "Look Away."[36] In the 2020s, his sound shifted toward EDM-infused collaborations, incorporating electronic dance elements in songs like "Like Gold" with Loud Luxury and "Close Your Eyes" with Lucas Estrada and Tribbs, expanding his pop base with pulsating beats and broader production scopes. This progression continued in 2025 with releases such as "In The Air Tonight" with Moguai and Kiara, and "SOS" with Gromee.[5][37][6] This progression reflects a versatile approach, balancing personal balladry with dance-oriented energy while maintaining core pop and soul underpinnings.[36]Influences and training
Stephen Puth's musical influences draw heavily from classic rock and soul artists, shaped by his family's record collection. He has cited Van Morrison, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Otis Redding, Bill Withers, James Taylor, and Aerosmith as key inspirations, appreciating their structural approaches to songwriting and emotional depth.[38][36] Growing up in a musical household also exposed him to modern pop through his family's environment, blending these vintage sounds with contemporary genres. Puth received classical piano training from his mother, Debra Puth, a music teacher who instructed all three of her children in the instrument from a young age.[39][15] Dissatisfied with classical repertoire by seventh grade, he became self-taught on guitar, honing the skill independently. Lacking formal conservatory education, Puth gained practical expertise through music industry internships, where he assisted professionals and learned production techniques on the job.[36][40] His brother Charlie Puth's successful career served as a significant motivator, pushing Stephen to refine his songwriting and pursue music professionally. Early songwriting became a form of self-therapy for Puth, helping him process personal experiences and develop his craft into professional-level skills. These elements contributed to his broader inspirations, fusing 1970s soul influences with modern production methods acquired through hands-on experience.[36]Discography
Singles as lead artist
Stephen Puth's career as a lead artist began with his signing to Arista Records in 2018, marking the release of his debut single focused on themes of attraction and romantic tension. His early singles predominantly explore personal relationships, heartbreak, and introspection through a mix of pop, acoustic, and ballad styles. While achieving modest commercial success, particularly on radio airplay, his lead releases have garnered steady streaming attention without major chart-topping breakthroughs.[1] "Sexual Vibe," released on December 3, 2018, served as Puth's debut single, characterized by its groove-pop sound and lyrics centered on sexual attraction and playful tension in a budding romance. The track's upbeat rhythm and confident vocals highlighted Puth's smooth delivery, drawing initial buzz for its retro-inspired vibe. It accumulated millions of streams across platforms, establishing his solo presence.[41][42][15] Follow-up single "Half Gone," released on February 28, 2019, shifted to a heartfelt ballad exploring the emotional toll of repeated heartbreaks, where each failed relationship leaves one feeling incomplete. With soulful verses building to a crooning chorus questioning love's feasibility, the song resonated through its vulnerable lyrics and 1960s undertones. The accompanying music video, premiered on March 1, 2019, amplified its introspective theme.[43][19] "Look Away," released on June 14, 2019, adopted an acoustic pop style and delved into reflections on a past love, capturing the pain of avoidance after a breakup; co-written with his brother Charlie Puth, it peaked at number 39 on the Billboard Pop Airplay chart and entered the top 40 overall. The song's stripped-back production and nostalgic tone contributed to its radio success, with an acoustic version further boosting streams to over 10 million on Spotify.[44][20][45] "Crying My Eyes Out," released on November 22, 2019, emerged as an emotional ballad about overcoming heartbreak and reclaiming strength post-relationship. Its groovy guitar line and enchanted vocals conveyed resilience amid sorrow, with the official video released on December 13, 2019, emphasizing themes of closure. The single maintained Puth's pattern of modest streaming gains, aligning with his overall catalog's 223 million total streams, predominantly from lead and collaborative efforts.[46][47][48] In 2020, Puth released "Watching You Walk Away" on May 14, an introspective track portraying the recurring agony of a partner's departure and the struggle to hold onto a fading connection. The lyric video, shared shortly after, underscored its relational turmoil through poignant storytelling. Later that year, "Whose Arms" (featuring Sofia Reyes), released on October 9, 2020, introduced bilingual elements via Reyes' contributions while Puth led on verses about jealousy and uncertainty in love—questioning a lover's whereabouts and loyalty. The duet's pop structure and acoustic video release on December 1, 2020, highlighted its emotional depth, contributing to Puth's evolving solo narrative.[49][50][51][52] Puth's lead singles post-2020 have been limited, with his focus shifting toward collaborations; however, his early catalog reflects a consistent exploration of romantic vulnerability, achieving niche radio and streaming impact without widespread commercial dominance.[34][15]| Single Title | Release Date | Style/Theme | Notable Achievement |
