Release

[edit]

On June 6, 2022, the band announced the album would be released on January 20, 2023.[1][2] The album was announced alongside a new track and video "Better Than Saturday Night", as well as a 10th Anniversary UK tour for February 2023. Scott Gorham and Jimmy DeGrasso rejoined the band for the UK tour dates as part of the 10th Anniversary commemorations.[1][2]

Wrong Side Of Paradise is available on multiple different formats, including limited coloured vinyl (green, blue, red and black/white split), black vinyl, signed CD, cassette and digital download. A special edition of the album containing two bonus tracks can be found on CD (which comes with a 24-page booklet) and USB stick formats. Various collector bundles are also available.[3][2]

Warwick said of the new album: "I am very proud of this record, Black Star Riders fifth release and the first with our new and exciting relationship with Earache Records. As with all BSR albums, "Wrong Side Of Paradise" is an anthemic statement of intent, driven by ferocious guitars and thundering drums. I can only write about my own personal experiences, my families, my friends and how I see a world that is unravelling and changing faster than we can comprehend. That being said, I’m a firm believer in the power of positivity, something that echoes throughout this album."[1][2]

"Better Than Saturday Night" was premiered globally via Planet Rock Radio. In discussing the song and its accompanying video, Warwick said: ""Better Than Saturday Night" is a feel-good, uplifting tune about staying strong in the face of adversity, being true to yourself, and the power of positivity. I wrote it for my kids, but subliminally I think I also wrote it for myself and everyone for those days when we need to find a little bit of extra strength. We wanted to reflect the positivity, power, attitude and strength to endure sentiment in the lyrics of the song. And no better way to do that than Black Star Riders rockin' out with the Los Angeles Roller Derby Dolls.”[1][2]

Wrong Side of Paradise is the fifth studio album by the band , released on 20 January 2023 by . The album consists of 11 tracks and was recorded in 2021 at Studio 606 in Northridge, California, and Toochtoon Sound in , with production handled by Jay Ruston. Black Star Riders originated in 2012 as a continuation of Thin Lizzy's live lineup, featuring former members Ricky Warwick and Scott Gorham, and has released four previous studio albums between 2013 and 2019. Following Gorham's departure in 2021, Warwick remains the sole original member, with the current lineup comprising Warwick on lead vocals and guitar, Sam Wood on guitar, Robert Crane on bass, and Zak St. John on drums. The album's lead single, "Better Than Saturday Night" featuring Def Leppard vocalist Joe Elliott, was released on 6 June 2022. Described as an anthemic hard rock record with ferocious guitars and thundering drums, Wrong Side of Paradise draws from personal experiences to convey themes of positivity amid challenges, including depression in "Riding Out the Storm," social media critique in "Catch Yourself On," and political commentary in "Green and Troubled Land." It has been praised in music reviews for its riff-driven energy and as one of Warwick's strongest works, earning high marks such as 9/10 for maintaining the band's legacy despite lineup changes.

Background

Lineup changes

In September 2021, founding guitarist departed to focus on reviving , marking the first major lineup shift just before the recording of Wrong Side of Paradise. This exit, announced on , left the band without one of its original architects since its 2013 formation as a offshoot, and Gorham was not replaced for studio work, reducing the group to a four-piece configuration. Recording for the album commenced in October 2021, making it the first release without Gorham's contributions. To fill the drumming role vacated by Chad Szeliga's departure, Los Angeles-based drummer Zak St. John joined as a permanent member in September 2021, providing his first full album performance on Wrong Side of Paradise. St. John's integration occurred amid the band's transition to Earache Records, allowing the core lineup of vocalist/guitarist Ricky Warwick, bassist Robbie Crane, and guitarist Christian Martucci to proceed with sessions at Studio 606 in Northridge, California, and Toochtoon Sound in Redmond, Oregon. Post-recording, in June 2022, guitarist exited the band due to scheduling conflicts with his commitments to and , rendering Wrong Side of Paradise his final album with before its January 2023 release. , who had joined in following Damon Johnson's departure, handled duties during the album's creation alongside .
