Wrong Side of Paradise is the fifth studio album by hard rock band Black Star Riders, released on January 20, 2023.
It is the first Black Star Riders album to feature drummer Zak St. John, and the last to feature guitarist/songwriter Christian Martucci, who left the band in the summer of 2022. It is the first Black Star Riders album to be recorded without founding member Scott Gorham, who left shortly before the recording sessions.
Release
[edit]On June 6, 2022, the band announced the album would be released on January 20, 2023.[1][2] The album was announced alongside a new track and video "Better Than Saturday Night", as well as a 10th Anniversary UK tour for February 2023. Scott Gorham and Jimmy DeGrasso rejoined the band for the UK tour dates as part of the 10th Anniversary commemorations.[1][2]
Wrong Side Of Paradise is available on multiple different formats, including limited coloured vinyl (green, blue, red and black/white split), black vinyl, signed CD, cassette and digital download. A special edition of the album containing two bonus tracks can be found on CD (which comes with a 24-page booklet) and USB stick formats. Various collector bundles are also available.[3][2]
Warwick said of the new album: "I am very proud of this record, Black Star Riders fifth release and the first with our new and exciting relationship with Earache Records. As with all BSR albums, "Wrong Side Of Paradise" is an anthemic statement of intent, driven by ferocious guitars and thundering drums. I can only write about my own personal experiences, my families, my friends and how I see a world that is unravelling and changing faster than we can comprehend. That being said, I’m a firm believer in the power of positivity, something that echoes throughout this album."[1][2]
"Better Than Saturday Night" was premiered globally via Planet Rock Radio. In discussing the song and its accompanying video, Warwick said: ""Better Than Saturday Night" is a feel-good, uplifting tune about staying strong in the face of adversity, being true to yourself, and the power of positivity. I wrote it for my kids, but subliminally I think I also wrote it for myself and everyone for those days when we need to find a little bit of extra strength. We wanted to reflect the positivity, power, attitude and strength to endure sentiment in the lyrics of the song. And no better way to do that than Black Star Riders rockin' out with the Los Angeles Roller Derby Dolls.”[1][2]

Lineup changes
In September 2021, founding guitarist Scott Gorham departed Black Star Riders to focus on reviving Thin Lizzy, marking the first major lineup shift just before the recording of Wrong Side of Paradise.[3] This exit, announced on September 21, left the band without one of its original architects since its 2013 formation as a Thin Lizzy offshoot, and Gorham was not replaced for studio work, reducing the group to a four-piece configuration.[5] Recording for the album commenced in October 2021, making it the first Black Star Riders release without Gorham's contributions.[3] To fill the drumming role vacated by Chad Szeliga's departure, Los Angeles-based drummer Zak St. John joined as a permanent member in September 2021, providing his first full album performance on Wrong Side of Paradise.[6] St. John's integration occurred amid the band's transition to Earache Records, allowing the core lineup of vocalist/guitarist Ricky Warwick, bassist Robbie Crane, and guitarist Christian Martucci to proceed with sessions at Studio 606 in Northridge, California, and Toochtoon Sound in Redmond, Oregon.[7] Post-recording, in June 2022, guitarist Christian Martucci exited the band due to scheduling conflicts with his commitments to Corey Taylor and Stone Sour, rendering Wrong Side of Paradise his final album with Black Star Riders before its January 2023 release.[8] Martucci, who had joined in 2018 following Damon Johnson's departure, handled lead guitar duties during the album's creation alongside Warwick.[9] These personnel shifts significantly altered Black Star Riders' dynamics, with Ricky Warwick emerging as the sole remaining founding member and primary driver of the band's continuity and creative vision.[10] Warwick emphasized that such changes were natural as members pursued other priorities, but the focus remained on the music, allowing the band to maintain its hard rock identity without disruption to the album's production.[11] The reliance on Warwick's leadership ensured a streamlined quartet approach, fostering a "gang mentality" in songwriting while adapting to the evolving roster.[11]Development
The development of Wrong Side of Paradise was primarily driven by vocalist Ricky Warwick, who handled the bulk of the songwriting by composing riffs and full tracks on his own during periods of isolation, often starting with acoustic ideas before refining them digitally.[11][12] Drawing from personal experiences amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Warwick channeled frustrations and introspection into the material, viewing the lyrics as a form of diary that captured societal and individual challenges.[12] The pandemic's disruptions, including travel restrictions and band availability issues, encouraged this solo approach while extending the creative timeline.[12] Conceptualization began in late 2020, as Warwick gained clarity on the album's direction during lockdown, aiming for a tone that emphasized optimism and escapism to counter global negativity, a shift from the band's more acerbic prior works influenced by collective band reflection on recent events.[11] By mid-2021, demos were prepared and shared with the group, coinciding with lineup shifts such as the departure of founding guitarist Scott Gorham.[11][13] The band ultimately selected 11 tracks for the standard edition, focusing on songs that balanced hard rock energy with contemporary production elements to maintain the group's signature drive while evolving their sound.[11][14] This curation prioritized thematic cohesion around resilience and personal growth, setting the stage for the album's reflective yet uplifting character.[11]Recording and production
Sessions
The recording sessions for Wrong Side of Paradise occurred in the fall of 2021, shortly after the departure of founding guitarist Scott Gorham, marking the band's first album without his contributions.[7] Primary tracking took place at Studio 606 in Northridge, California, and Toochtoon Sound in Redmond, Oregon, with production handled by Jay Ruston, a longtime collaborator who emphasized the band's core sound during the process.[15][7] These sessions introduced new drummer Zak St. John to the lineup alongside vocalist Ricky Warwick, bassist Robbie Crane, and guitarist Christian Martucci, following the departure of previous drummer Chad Szeliga.[15][2] Overdubs and final mixes were finalized by late 2021, with special editions of the album later incorporating bonus tracks "Cut 'n' Run" and "Suspicious Times," co-written by Warwick and Martucci.[16][2]Producer and team
The production of Wrong Side of Paradise was led by Jay Ruston, a Grammy-nominated producer renowned for his work with hard rock and metal acts including Steel Panther, Anthrax, and Stone Sour, who brought a polished hard rock aesthetic to the album through his long-term collaboration with Black Star Riders.[17][7][18] Ruston served as the primary producer, overseeing the recording process that began in October 2021, as well as handling engineering and mixing duties to ensure a tight, dynamic sound.[19][20] Assisting Ruston on engineering was John Douglass, who contributed to tracking and overdubs, providing additional support during the sessions at Studio 606 in Los Angeles and Toochtoon Sound in Redmond, Oregon.[21] The mixing was completed by Ruston at TRS West in Los Angeles, focusing on refining the album's raw energy into a cohesive hard rock package.[20] Mastering was handled by Paul Logus, whose work enhanced the overall clarity and punch of the tracks.[22] Additional collaborators included session keyboardist Fred Mandel, who added atmospheric elements to select tracks, and Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliott, who provided guest backing vocals on "Better Than Saturday Night," recorded separately by engineer Ronan McHugh at Joe's Garage in Dublin, Ireland.[23] These contributions helped shape the album's blend of classic rock influences and modern production values without additional session players noted for other roles.[24]Composition
Style
Wrong Side of Paradise is characterized by a predominant hard rock style, drawing heavily from Thin Lizzy's dual-guitar approach with its emphasis on interlocking guitar lines and harmonic interplay.[25][26] The album features driving rhythms and anthemic choruses that evoke the band's Celtic rock roots, creating a sense of urgency and communal energy throughout.[2][25] This release marks an evolution from Black Star Riders' previous albums, incorporating more modern production techniques while remaining anchored in 1970s and 1980s rock structures.[2] Recorded partly at Dave Grohl's Studio 606, the sound benefits from polished engineering, without overshadowing the organic rock foundation.[2][25] Frontman Ricky Warwick has described the album as a "new chapter" for the band, signaling their transition to a four-piece lineup and a decade-long milestone.[2] Key sonic elements include prominent guitar riffs, as heard in the title track's chunky, riff-driven opener, alongside upbeat tempos and layered vocal and guitar harmonies that enhance the album's accessibility.[26][2] These features contribute to a blend of classic hard rock vigor with contemporary polish, distinguishing Wrong Side of Paradise within the genre.[25]Themes
The album Wrong Side of Paradise centers on themes of resilience and positivity in the face of adversity, drawing inspiration from the isolation and uncertainties of the pandemic era alongside personal growth. Ricky Warwick, the band's frontman, infuses the lyrics with reflections on enduring hardship, as seen in tracks like "Riding Out The Storm," which confronts depression with a motivational call to reject negative thinking and push forward.[25][2] Similarly, "Don't Let The World (Get In The Way)" emphasizes perseverance against external pressures, portraying stories of underdogs who refuse to be defeated by life's obstacles.[25][27] Social commentary permeates the record, addressing modern divisions, metaphorical walls, and escapism, often balanced by uplifting counter-narratives. The title track evokes a mood of paranoia and societal fragmentation, alluding to contemporary barriers and the dread of a divided world.[25] "Catch Yourself On" critiques the rise of conspiracy theories and the toxic influence of social media, warning against becoming "slaves to technology" that erodes independent thought and fosters isolation.[28][2] In contrast, "Better Than Saturday Night" provides an escapist yet optimistic escape, celebrating simple joys as a rebellion against gloom with its infectious, feel-good refrain.[25][27] "Green And Troubled Land" further explores political doublespeak and historical burdens, particularly in the context of Northern Ireland's ongoing tensions, urging progress over regression.[25][28] Autobiographical elements from Warwick's life add depth, weaving in reflections on his upbringing and the band's evolution. Songs like "Pay Dirt" and "Catch Yourself On" incorporate vernacular from his Glasgow and Belfast roots, evoking personal nostalgia and the grit of his formative years.[25][28] The album also contemplates Black Star Riders' history, marking a decade since inception and addressing the band's future following Scott Gorham's departure, with Warwick positioned as the enduring creative force.[28] Overall, the tone represents a shift toward a more acerbic and introspective edge compared to prior releases, grappling with themes of loss and societal ills, yet it retains the band's signature rock 'n' roll optimism. Tracks such as "This Life Will Be The Death Of Me" culminate in defiant, hopeful choruses that affirm life's value despite its trials, blending reflection with an unyielding spirit.[2][27][28]Release and promotion

The lead single from Wrong Side of Paradise, "Better Than Saturday Night", was released on June 6, 2022, featuring backing vocals from Def Leppard's Joe Elliott and accompanied by an official music video that captures the band's high-energy performance alongside a Los Angeles roller derby team.[32][33] "Pay Dirt" followed as the second single on September 7, 2022, showcasing the band's riff-driven hard rock style through its official audio release, which served as a lyric video to highlight the track's gritty lyrics and driving guitars.[34][35] On November 2, 2022, Black Star Riders issued a cover of The Osmonds' 1972 hit "Crazy Horses" as the third pre-album single, delivering a high-energy rock reinterpretation with pounding rhythms and fiery guitar work, supported by an official audio release that emphasized its raw, galloping intensity.[36][37] The final pre-release single, "Riding Out the Storm", arrived on December 2, 2022, with an official music video filmed in downtown Los Angeles featuring new guitarist Sam Wood, underscoring themes of resilience amid personal and global turmoil through its anthemic, mid-tempo arrangement.[38][39] Each single was promoted through targeted social media campaigns by Earache Records, including teaser clips and behind-the-scenes content, alongside radio premieres on stations like Planet Rock to generate buzz ahead of the album's January 2023 launch.[40][34]Tour
To promote Wrong Side of Paradise, Black Star Riders embarked on a 10th anniversary UK tour in February 2023, featuring former members Scott Gorham on guitar and Jimmy DeGrasso on drums alongside the current lineup. The tour included special guests Michael Monroe and Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons, with dates from February 13 in Nottingham to February 26 in London. Additional promotional shows continued into 2024, including a performance at KK's Steel Mill in Wolverhampton on November 15, 2024. As of November 2025, no further tour dates have been announced.[7][41][42]Reception
Critical reception
Upon its release in January 2023, Wrong Side of Paradise by Black Star Riders received generally positive reviews from music critics as of 2023, who praised its energetic hard rock sound and continuation of the band's Thin Lizzy-influenced style.[25][2][43] Outlets such as Louder Sound awarded it 3.5 out of 5 stars, highlighting Ricky Warwick's capture of Thin Lizzy's romance and strut through rousing choruses and motivational themes.[25] The Rockpit gave a higher score of 9 out of 10, commending the album's relentless drive and high-quality production by Jay Ruston at Studio 606.[2] Similarly, Ever Metal rated it 8 out of 10, noting its solid modern hard rock execution and ability to stand independently despite historical roots.[43] Critics frequently lauded the album's reflective lyrics addressing social issues like depression, political doublespeak, and the dispossessed, alongside its joyous mood and chiming guitars that evoke Thin Lizzy's mid-period energy.[25][2] Reviewers positioned it as a strong new chapter for the band following lineup changes, including Scott Gorham's departure, with Warwick's vocals and guitarist Christian Martucci's riffs emerging as highlights for their urgency—Martucci having performed on the album before leaving the band in 2022.[2][43] The production was also a point of acclaim, blending funk backbeats with contemporary elements to create a punchy, stripped-back sound.[25][2] While overwhelmingly positive, with aggregate sentiment around 80% favorable across major outlets, some critiques pointed to occasional formulaic elements, such as the cover of "Crazy Horses" adhering too closely to the original without innovation.[25][43] Ever Metal suggested the stylistic shift away from dual guitar solos might surprise Thin Lizzy purists, introducing a subtle melancholy amid the warrior spirit, though these were minor detractors in an otherwise celebrated effort.[43][25]Commercial performance
Upon its release on January 20, 2023, Wrong Side of Paradise debuted strongly on various UK charts, peaking at number 6 on the UK Albums Chart, number 2 on the UK Independent Albums Chart, and number 1 on the UK Rock & Metal Albums Chart, where it charted for six weeks.[44] It also reached number 2 on the Scottish Albums Chart.[44] Internationally, the album entered the German Albums Chart at number 23[45] and the Swiss Albums Chart at number 24.[46]| Chart (2023) | Peak Position |
