History
[edit]On 18 December 2015, a test pattern began broadcasting on channel 76, reading "New Channel Coming Soon".[3] Seven acknowledged the broadcast, and director of programming, Angus Ross, formally announced on 1 February 2016 that Seven was launching a new channel, and more details would be released soon.[4] During the ad-break of miniseries Molly on 7 February 2016, Seven announced that channel 76 would be named 7flix, and would be launched on 28 February 2016.[1][5][6][7] The "New Channel" test pattern then was replaced with a continuous promo loop for 7flix.
7flix began broadcasting at 6am on 28 February 2016 in MPEG-4.[8] The channel airs movies in its prime time slots with television series and other entertainment at other times.[9] 7flix was added to Seven's live-streaming service, PLUS7 Live, upon its launch.
On 13 April 2016, it was announced the channel would amend its schedule, shifting its focus from movies to more American dramas. This change began in the weeks prior, when Grey's Anatomy premiered at 8:30pm, which was initially designated as a "movie-exclusive" time slot. The change also saw the addition of repeats of Criminal Minds to Thursday nights.[10]
On 3 June 2016, 7flix became available on more TVs as the channel switched to MPEG-2.[11]
On 3 August 2017, 18 months after launching in metropolitan areas, Prime7 announced that it would carry 7flix to regional stations in northern and southern New South Wales, regional Victoria and Mildura.[12][13] The channel launched at 6:00 am on 3 September on digital channel 66, in an MPEG-4 format.[14]
In December 2019, the Seven Network announced that 7flix would rebrand in 2020 to target a young female audience. In July 2020, the Seven Network unveiled its new rebranding of 7flix, with a new purple ribbon-like design and text and on air graphics to coincide with the revamp of its multichannel stations.

Launch and Initial Focus
On 7 February 2016, the Seven Network announced the launch of 7flix, a new free-to-air digital multichannel dedicated to general entertainment, during an advertising break in the miniseries Molly.[8] The channel was positioned to fill a gap in the network's multichannel offerings, emphasizing accessible content for metropolitan audiences in major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide.[9] 7flix officially launched on 28 February 2016 at 6:00 a.m., broadcasting exclusively in MPEG-4 format with a standard-definition resolution of 576i SDTV on logical channel number 76.[10] From its debut, the channel targeted a broad audience with a mix of movies, sitcoms, and family-oriented programming, aiming to provide light entertainment suitable for diverse viewers. The initial lineup featured a heavy emphasis on films such as Despicable Me, Pitch Perfect, and Frozen, alongside US imports including multiple episodes of Once Upon a Time airing back-to-back on launch day, The Muppets pilot, and series like The Amazing Race and Scandal.[11][9] This strategy sought to capitalize on popular, binge-friendly content to quickly build viewership among households with digital TV capabilities.[12] By April 2016, just weeks after launch, 7flix adjusted its programming to incorporate more American dramas in primetime slots, reducing the frequency of movies to better align with audience preferences and compete in the multichannel landscape.[13] Key additions included Grey's Anatomy on Monday evenings at 8:30 p.m. and repeats of Criminal Minds on Thursdays, reflecting a pivot toward serialized storytelling that appealed to viewers seeking dramatic narratives over standalone films.[13] This shift helped stabilize the channel's ratings, achieving an average audience share of around 1.5% in its early months.[13] The channel's reach expanded nationally on 3 September 2017, when Prime7 affiliates introduced 7flix to regional audiences in New South Wales, the ACT, Victoria, and the Gold Coast on logical channel number 66, marking a significant increase in availability beyond metropolitan markets.[14] This rollout, announced in August 2017, allowed rural and regional viewers access to the same entertainment-focused content, further solidifying 7flix's role within the Seven Network's portfolio.[15]Rebranding and Audience Shift
In late 2019, Seven West Media announced a major rebranding for 7flix set to take effect in 2020, pivoting the channel's strategy from general entertainment to content specifically tailored for younger female viewers.[16] This shift aimed to better position 7flix within the multichannel landscape by appealing to a key demographic underserved by other Seven Network offerings.[17] The rebrand, fully implemented in mid-2020, introduced a refreshed visual identity designed to create a distinct and modern presence separate from channels like 7two and 7mate.[18] Post-rebrand programming emphasized premium movies, scripted dramas, and light-hearted comedies that resonate with the target audience, incorporating feel-good series and narratives featuring strong female protagonists to foster relatability and emotional connection.[5] This audience-focused repositioning contributed to heightened engagement in drama and lifestyle-oriented content, aligning with broader gains in Seven Network's performance among younger viewers; for instance, the network added 3.8 share points in the 25-54 demographic and 6.5 points in grocery buyers during the second half of 2020.[19]Recent Developments and Expansions
In 2023 and 2024, 7flix aligned with the Seven Network's broader strategy of maintaining a focus on drama and entertainment programming, as outlined in the network's annual upfront presentations, without introducing significant overhauls specific to the multichannel.[20] The 2025 upfronts further emphasized this continuity, announcing over 20 new local entertainment series across the network, including dramas and reality formats that support 7flix's encore and repeat scheduling indirectly through shared content pools.[21] The Seven Network's nationwide MPEG-4 upgrade rollout, completed across major markets by late 2025, improved overall broadcast efficiency and picture quality for compatible devices, benefiting multichannels like 7flix—which has used MPEG-4 since launch—by freeing up spectrum for enhanced network services.[22] On 7 October 2025, the Seven Network implemented broadcast adjustments in Sydney, including a shift to full MPEG-4 transmission for main channels and retuning requirements for some households; 7flix, already in SD MPEG-4, was unaffected in format but aligned with the multiplex updates.[23] This change enhanced accessibility for HD sets on primary channels while phasing out legacy formats, marking a completion of the MPEG-4 transition in Australia's largest market.[24] In September 2025, Seven West Media announced a proposed merger with Southern Cross Media, approved by the ACCC on November 12, 2025, to create a larger national media entity; as of November 16, 2025, the deal remains pending completion but could influence future strategies for Seven's multichannels, including 7flix.[25][26] Streaming expansions via 7plus in 2024 and 2025 provided minor but notable enhancements to 7flix content access, including a December 2024 partnership with Fetch TV to launch a dedicated 7plus app, facilitating on-demand viewing of 7flix programs on additional devices and contributing to a 30% growth in the platform's user base.[27] These updates positioned 7plus as a central hub for 7flix's drama library, with projections for it to become Australia's leading free-to-air streaming service by the end of 2025.[28] No major controversies affected 7flix during this period, allowing steady integration with the network's entertainment initiatives.[20]Programming
Format and Genres
7flix operates as a 24/7 free-to-air digital television multichannel within the Seven Network, emphasizing a mix of imported international content, primarily from the United States, premium Hollywood movies, and occasional encores of Australian-produced programs.[29] It functions as a dedicated entertainment outlet, broadcasting in 576i SDTV resolution using MPEG-4 encoding, with advertisements and promotional segments integrated throughout to highlight crossovers with other Seven Network offerings.[30] The channel's primary genres encompass comedy, drama, reality television, and feature films, supplemented by subgenres such as children's programming in morning slots, news and documentaries, and soap operas.[29] Scheduling follows structured patterns designed to engage viewers, including extended marathons of episodic series, dedicated afternoon blocks for movies, and primetime evenings focused on dramatic content targeting young adults.[11] Initially launched with a broad entertainment focus from 2016 to 2020, 7flix underwent a significant rebranding in 2020 to skew towards younger female demographics, incorporating more lifestyle-oriented and feel-good programming while retaining its core mix of genres.[17][18] This shift aligned with the channel's evolving identity as a versatile entertainment hub, prioritizing accessible, binge-friendly formats over niche specialization.[31]Children

The channel's comedy lineup in 2025 focuses on light-hearted US imports and sitcom marathons rather than new original productions, with episodes of The Goldbergs providing family-oriented humor through 1980s nostalgia and relatable sibling dynamics.[34][35] These selections highlight everyday comedic scenarios, appealing to viewers seeking easygoing entertainment without heavy commitments.[36]Drama

7flix's former programming included a range of discontinued shows across various genres, particularly during its launch phase in 2016 and leading up to the 2020 rebrand, which shifted focus toward young female audiences.[17] These titles were gradually removed from the schedule as the channel evolved its content strategy. Adult AnimationThe channel broadcast the 2015 reboot of The Muppets, a short-lived series that aired for one season starting in late 2016 as part of the initial lineup.[48][49] Children/Preschool
Early kids' blocks on 7flix featured programming for children and preschool viewers in the mornings during the channel's first few years, but these were discontinued before the 2020 audience shift, including Beat Bugs.[17][50] Comedy
Comedy programming included extended marathons of The Big Bang Theory, which ran on the channel until 2020, and How I Met Your Mother, an initial staple added around 2018 that later departed the schedule.[17][51] Drama
Dramas on 7flix encompassed Grey's Anatomy, which had a run from 2016 to 2020, the Marvel series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the fairy-tale drama Once Upon a Time, and Roswell, New Mexico.[52][53][54] News/Documentaries
Pre-rebrand, 7flix aired limited runs of factual series and documentaries as part of its broader entertainment mix, including MythBusters.[17][55] Game Shows
The channel briefly included encores of local game shows, such as educational competitions like It's Academic.[56] Reality
Reality content featured encores of the Australian renovation series House Rules.[44] Other
In food and lifestyle, cooking shows from Food Network were integrated following the 2019 closure of 7food but later discontinued.[17] Religious programming appeared infrequently, while US soap opera imports, such as dropped serials, were part of early offerings before being phased out.[17]
