Champ Car

[edit]
Ranger in the Champ Car race at Long Beach in 2005

Ranger was the 2002 Canadian Formula A Karting champion and 2003 North American Fran Am 2000 Pro Champion. He raced in the Toyota Atlantic series in 2004 with number 27, the same as Quebec racecar drivers Gilles Villeneuve and Jacques Villeneuve, scoring six podiums (top-three finishes) and winning the Rookie of the Year award.

Ranger made his debut in the Champ Car World Series in 2005 with Conquest Racing, also driving the No. 27 car. He became the youngest driver in the series' history to finish on the podium with a second place at Monterrey. After a few solid finishes at the beginning of the season, Ranger's year went downhill as he mostly struggled in the second half of the season, but held on to tenth in the points championship. [1] In 2006, he remained with the Conquest Racing team. He ranked tenth in the standings with a best finish of fifth at the 2006 Lexmark Indy 300.[1]

NASCAR

[edit]

With no sponsorship and Champ Car merging with the Indy Racing League, Andrew Ranger moved to stock car racing in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series to drive the No. 27 Ford for Dave Jacombs.[2] He won the second race in the series at Mosport International Raceway, and the season points championship.[1] He has also won at Montreal and Trois-Rivières during 2008. He has four poles to go along with his wins at, Mosport Int'l Raceway, Edmonton (2007); Edmonton (2008).

In 2009, he was the class of the field for the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, winning the Dickies 200 at Mosport International Raceway, the A&W 300 at SunValley Speedway (his first ever oval), The Rexall Edmonton Indy, Vortex Brake Pads 200 at Mosport International Raceway, the GP3R 300 at Circuit Trois-Rivières and the Komatsu 300 At Riverside Speedway. On top of all of this he has two poles and many podium finishes. Ranger ended up winning the title by 167 points for his second Championship in three years.

He drove for Fitz Motorsports at the August 2008 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal and he also drove for the team in four of the remaining ten races of 2008 with a best finish of 19th at Bristol Motor Speedway. In 2009, he drove the No. 11 Tide/Ridemakerz.com /Toyota Camry to a third place finish after leading many laps in the 2009 Napa Auto Parts 200 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. For 2010 he will drive for the No. 27 Baker-Curb Racing Nationwide team with sponsorship from Dodge including Montreal.

For 2010, Ranger drove part-time at the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series with the No. 27 Dave Jacombs Dodge. He ran some races for NDS Motorsports in their No. 35 Waste Management Chevy in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and West series. He won the race at Infineon Raceway in the K&N Pro Series West on June 20. He picked up the win from pole in Lime Rock Park in the K&N Pro Series East series. On July 17, he won from the pole at the Toronto Indy 100, being the first driver to win all three NASCAR regional touring series in one year. His third win of the year was at Trois-Rivières and at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve where he bumped Jason Bowles in the last turn for the win both times from the pole. In 2011, he again won at Montreal and Toronto on a limited basis schedule.

Ranger at Road America in 2011

Ranger raced in the K&N Pro Series and the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series again in 2011. On May 22, 2011, Ranger won the ARCA race on the road course at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, New Jersey. On June 25, 2011, Andrew competed in the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Road America finishing sixth. Ranger made his Sprint Cup Series debut at Watkins Glen finishing 35th for FAS Lane Racing.[1]

For 2012, Ranger ran in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series and Nationwide Series for GC Motorsports. He won two Canadian Tire events in his home province of Quebec at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and Circuit ICAR along with the ARCA event at New Jersey Motorsports Park.

In 2013, Ranger ran a partial schedule in the Canadian Tire Series. He also ran the road courses in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and in the ARCA Racing Series. He won at New Jersey Motorsports Park in the ARCA Racing Series for the third year in a row.

Ranger at Autodrome Chaudière in 2015

In 2014, Ranger left Dave Jacombs's team and joined D. J. Kennington's DJK Racing to drive the No. 27 Dodge.[3] He would remain with the team through 2019. Ranger did not participate in the abbreviated 2020 Pinty's Series season held during the COVID-19 pandemic. He returned to the series in 2021 driving for Rick Ware Racing's new Pinty's Series team. The team also gave him one race in their Xfinity (previously Nationwide) Series No. 17 car, which they field jointly with SS-Green Light Racing.[4] He wanted to compete, but was replaced by J. J. Yeley.[citation needed]

Andrew Ranger is a Canadian professional stock car racing driver known for his unparalleled success in the NASCAR Canada Series, where he holds the all-time record for victories and has secured three championships. Born on November 20, 1986, in Roxton Pond, Quebec, Ranger began his motorsport career in open-wheel racing, capturing the Formula Renault 2.0 Fran-Am championship in 2003 before competing in the Champ Car World Series during the 2005 and 2006 seasons. He transitioned to stock car racing and established himself as a dominant force in the NASCAR Canada Series (previously known as the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series and NASCAR Pinty's Series), winning titles in 2007, 2009, and 2019 while amassing more victories than any other driver in the series' history. Ranger has also made select starts in American NASCAR national series, including the Xfinity Series, Camping World Truck Series, and Sprint Cup Series, as well as other circuits such as the ARCA Menards Series. Active in the NASCAR Canada Series for nearly two decades, Ranger continues to compete at a high level, consistently earning top finishes and reinforcing his status as one of Canada's most accomplished and enduring racing talents.

Early life

Birth and background

Andrew Ranger was born on November 20, 1986, in Roxton Pond, Quebec, Canada. Roxton Pond remains his hometown. As a Quebec native, Ranger is connected to the province's motorsport tradition, which includes prominent drivers such as Gilles Villeneuve and Jacques Villeneuve. His long-time use of car number 27 reflects this heritage, as the number was notably used by both Gilles and Jacques Villeneuve and held special significance for Ranger.

Entry into motorsport

Andrew Ranger began his competitive racing career in karting, achieving notable success at a young age. In 2002, at age 15, he captured the Canadian Formula A Karting Championship. The following year marked his transition to car racing, where he entered the Formula Renault 2.0 Fran-Am series in his first season competing in single-seaters. At age 16, Ranger won the North American Fran Am 2000 Pro Championship, securing five race victories, nine podiums, and the title before he even possessed a driver's license. This rapid rise from karting to immediate success in formula racing highlighted his exceptional talent and quick adaptation to open-wheel competition.

Open-wheel racing career

Karting and junior series

Andrew Ranger began his involvement in motorsport at a very young age in Quebec, accompanying his father, race-car driver Robert Ranger, to races across Quebec, Ontario, and the United States starting from three years old. This early exposure laid the foundation for his competitive career in karting within the province. In 2002, at age 14, Ranger captured the Canadian Formula A Karting Championship title, marking his emergence as a standout talent despite the challenges of leaving home to compete. This victory represented a significant achievement in national karting competition and demonstrated his potential for higher levels of the sport. The following year, Ranger transitioned to single-seater formula cars as a rookie driver. At only 16 years old in 2003, he competed in the Fran-Am Series (Formula Renault), winning five races and securing the championship—even before he had obtained his driver's license. This quick progression from karting to a major junior formula title highlighted his exceptional adaptability and skill in open-wheel racing at a young age.

Toyota Atlantic and Champ Car

Ranger competed in the Toyota Atlantic Championship in 2004, securing six podium finishes and winning Rookie of the Year honors as an 18-year-old driver from Quebec. He advanced to the Champ Car World Series in 2005 with Mi-Jack Conquest Racing, competing in 13 races and accumulating 140 points to finish 10th in the drivers' standings. In only his second Champ Car start at the Tecate/Telmex Grand Prix of Monterrey, Ranger achieved a second-place finish, becoming the youngest podium finisher in series history at 18 years, 6 months, and 2 days old. Ranger remained with Mi-Jack Conquest Racing for the 2006 season, contesting all 14 races and again placing 10th in the championship with 200 points.

Stock car racing career

NASCAR Canada Series

Andrew Ranger transitioned to stock car racing in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series (the predecessor to the current NASCAR Canada Series) in 2007 after his open-wheel career, quickly establishing himself as a top contender. In his debut full-time season, he won the inaugural championship, securing his first victory at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and maintaining the points lead from that race to the end of the year. He added championships in 2009 and 2019, becoming a three-time series champion. According to his official driver profile on NASCAR.ca, Ranger is the most winningest driver in series history with 31 victories, along with 28 pole awards, 89 top-5 finishes, 131 top-10 finishes, and 2,695 laps led across 170 starts. Recent seasons have showcased both challenges and strong performances. In 2023, Ranger endured a roller-coaster campaign, with mechanical issues in the first four races leading to laps-down finishes or retirements, before rebounding with his first top-5 at the Streets of Toronto; he finished the year with 3 top-5s, 6 top-10s, one podium (second place in race two at Ohsweken Speedway), and an average finish of 13.1. Ranger returned to form in 2024, earning 3 wins, 7 top-5 finishes, and 11 top-10 finishes over the 13-race schedule to place third in the final championship standings with 513 points, demonstrating his continued competitiveness as a seasoned veteran.

Other NASCAR competitions

Andrew Ranger made sporadic appearances in NASCAR's national and regional touring series beyond his primary focus in the NASCAR Canada Series. In the NASCAR Xfinity Series, Ranger competed in 17 races between 2008 and 2013. He recorded two top-10 finishes, highlighted by a career-best third-place result in 2009 that included leading 10 laps in the event. His average finish across those starts was 26.6. Ranger made a single start in the NASCAR Cup Series at Watkins Glen International in 2011, where he started 35th and finished 35th after completing 75 of 92 laps. In the NASCAR Truck Series, he entered one race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in 2014, qualifying sixth and finishing fifth while leading four laps. In 2010, Ranger achieved notable success in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series, becoming the first driver to win in the East, West, and Canada Series divisions in the same year. He secured a victory in the K&N Pro Series East at Lime Rock Park and in the K&N Pro Series West at Infineon Raceway (now Sonoma Raceway).

Achievements and records

Championships and statistics

Andrew Ranger is a three-time champion in the NASCAR Canada Series, having won the title in 2007, 2009, and 2019. He leads the series all-time in wins, poles, top-five finishes, and top-ten finishes. Ranger has also recorded runner-up finishes in the championship standings in 2016 and 2021.

Awards

Andrew Ranger received the BG Products Rookie of the Year award in the Toyota Atlantic series for the 2004 season. This honor recognized his strong debut performance, which included six podium finishes across 12 starts as a first-year driver. In 2009, Ranger was presented with the Most Popular Driver Award in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series at the Night of Champions Touring Awards Gala, an honor bestowed in addition to his series championship that year. This fan-driven recognition underscored his strong support within the Canadian stock car racing community.

Television appearances
