"Beautiful Now" is a song by Russian-born German musician Zedd from his second studio album, True Colors (2015), featuring vocals from American singer-songwriter Jon Bellion. It was written by Zedd, Bellion, Antonina Armato, David Jost, Tim James and Desmond Child. The song was released on 13 May 2015 as the album's second single. The song was commercially successful and has been featured on a number of worldwide music charts.
Background
[edit]On 8 May 2015, as part of his True Colors promotional campaign, Zedd premiered "Beautiful Now" at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, Illinois. Five days later, he announced that he would release the song onto iTunes at 9:00 PM PST.[1] A few hours prior to its release, he tweeted the lyrics from the song's beat break: "BAH BAH BAH BABABAH BAH BAH BABABAH BAH BAH BAH BABABAH BABABABA".[2] The official audio for the song was uploaded to Zedd's YouTube channel at that same time.[3]
Composition
[edit]"Beautiful Now" is a progressive house song with influences of dance-pop written in the key of D major. It runs at 128 BPM.[4]
Music video
[edit]The music video for "Beautiful Now", directed by Jonathan Desbiens, was released on 11 June 2015.[5]
Synopsis
[edit]The video intertwines five different stories together. The first is of a woman who supposedly drowned her female lover in a pool; the second involves an elderly Central American man who is journeying on an unsuccessful mountain climbing attempt; the third involves the son of a man whose home is invaded by armed robbers; the fourth involves Zedd portraying a liquor store robber who becomes hostile with the management by threatening him with a knife; and the fifth depicts a distraught girl laying down on a railroad.
As the song progresses, the video intercuts to scenes of family happiness, good times with friends, dancing and rejoicing before concluding the five stories. The first woman's lover is pulled from the water before drowning, and the ex realizes the gravity of the situation; the old man attempts to climb the mountain and falls, but survives, without reaching the summit; the armed robbery victim's son confronts the hostiles at gunpoint and subdues them; Zedd's character reflects over what sunk him to his current point in life and seems to change his ways; the suicidal girl is missed by the train and reflects on her life and why she chose such an extreme act. All five people in the stories see themselves in a reflection in various surfaces as their stories are closed and they all resolve to be better people.[6]
Reception
[edit]As of 28 January 2026, the video has over 249 million views and over 2.1 million likes on Zedd's YouTube channel.[5]

Grey remix
[edit]On 29 July 2015, Los Angeles-based duo Grey released their remix of "Beautiful Now" on SoundCloud as a free download. The remix is known for its significant deviation in sound from the original, using a vocoder to give Bellion's vocals a different melody and robotic distortion, and accompanying them with a darker and melodically distinct background inspired by Egyptian music. The remix quickly began receiving coverage across electronic music websites and communities, and was acclaimed for its uniqueness and originality. It also became notable for only being Grey's first release despite its professionality, leading to speculation that the alias belonged to an experienced group of producers now going anonymous.[11] The alias belongs to brothers Kyle and Michael Trewartha, the former of whom previously operated under the alias Singularity.
Eventually, the remix came to the attention of Zedd, who liked and reposted the remix to his official SoundCloud page, and later released the track for purchase on iTunes on 11 September 2015.[12] Zedd has since continued to actively support Grey, playing their remix of Skrillex and Diplo's "Where Are Ü Now" featuring Justin Bieber at his True Colors Tour. He also went on to call Grey "hands down the best electronic music act right now" on Twitter.[13] Grey has since officially remixed two other songs from True Colors; "Papercut" and "True Colors", and toured with Zedd in 2017 as part of his Echo Tour.

Songwriting
The song "Beautiful Now" was collaboratively written by Anton Zaslavski (known professionally as Zedd), Jon Bellion, Antonina Armato, David Jost, Tim James, and Desmond Child during the development of Zedd's second studio album, True Colors.[9][10][11] Zedd began writing the song on piano, creating a vocal-piano demo to ensure emotional depth before adding electronic production elements.[12] The songwriting sessions were part of Zedd's broader work on the album.[12] Desmond Child co-wrote the track, drawing from his experience crafting pop anthems.[13] The track was completed in early 2015, ahead of the album's finalization and release. This collaborative approach allowed the song to blend electronic production elements with introspective lyrics, setting it apart within the album's diverse tracklist.[12]Recording and production
The production of "Beautiful Now" was led by Zedd, in collaboration with Rock Mafia as co-producers.[14] Jon Bellion provided the lead vocals, while Zedd's brother Arkadi Zaslavski contributed guitar.[14] Engineering support included vocal mixing by Ryan Shanahan and Zedd, with the overall mix handled by Zedd.[14] The track was mastered by Mike Marsh.[14] Key production elements featured layered synthesizers for a soaring electronic texture, alongside programmed drums set at 128 beats per minute to drive the EDM structure.[15][16] Vocal processing emphasized Bellion's performance in the drop sections, enhancing the dynamic build characteristic of the genre.[17] The recording built upon songwriting contributions from Zedd and Bellion, finalizing the material for Zedd's album True Colors. The sessions took place in the lead-up to the album's release in May 2015, with Bellion adding vocals to an existing instrumental track developed by Zedd.[17]Composition
Musical structure
"Beautiful Now" is classified as progressive house with influences from pop and electropop genres.[18][19] The track is composed in the key of B minor and maintains a tempo of 128 beats per minute, contributing to its energetic, danceable feel.[16][20] It adheres to a standard electronic dance music arrangement, structured around verses, a pre-chorus, chorus, and drop, incorporating build-ups with synth risers leading into a piano-led breakdown.[21][22] The album version lasts 3:38, whereas the extended mix extends to 5:15 to accommodate club play.[23][24]Lyrics and theme
The lyrics of "Beautiful Now," written by Zedd, Jon Bellion, Antonina Armato, David Jost, Tim James, and Desmond Child, center on the core theme of embracing the transient beauty of the present moment despite underlying uncertainties and personal struggles.[11] The song portrays a sense of redemption and immediacy, urging listeners to cherish connection in the "now" rather than resisting its impermanence, as captured in the repeated refrain "We could be beautiful now."[9] This theme reflects a universal experience of vulnerability, where fleeting joy offers empowerment amid emotional challenges.[25] The verses depict scenes of raw emotional turmoil and intimacy, highlighting vulnerability and doubt. In the first verse, lines such as "I see what you're wearing, there's nothing beneath it / Forgive me for staring, forgive me for breathing" evoke a moment of profound exposure and hesitation in a relationship, while "We might not know why, we might not know how / We're gonna get there somehow" introduces uncertainty about the future path.[9] The second verse builds on this with "We got to live fast, got no time to lose it / Got to take a chance, got no time to choose it / We might not know why, we might not know how / We're gonna get there baby somehow," shifting toward resilience through urgency and determination to seize the moment despite the unknown.[9] In contrast, the pre-chorus and chorus pivot to empowerment, declaring "This won't be forever, so why try to fight it? / We're beautiful now," which transforms personal fragility into shared affirmation and immediacy, emphasizing connection as a source of strength.[9] Jon Bellion's vocals and co-writing infuse the track with emotional depth, drawing from themes of vulnerability that align with his broader artistic style of introspective pop.[25] The bridge employs abstract metaphors of light and transience, with "Let's live tonight like fireflies / And one by one light up the sky / We disappear and pass the crown," symbolizing brief, illuminating moments of beauty that fade yet inspire, without a linear narrative but evoking redemption through ephemeral glow.[9] This lyrical uplift is briefly enhanced by the song's musical drop, amplifying the shift to hopeful resolution.[26]Release
Commercial release
"Beautiful Now" was released on May 13, 2015, as the second single from Zedd's second studio album, True Colors, via Interscope Records.[11] The track premiered live five days earlier, on May 8, 2015, at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, Illinois, marking the kickoff event for Zedd's True Colors promotional campaign.[27] The single was initially issued as a digital download featuring the original mix and became available on iTunes and major streaming platforms immediately after its official release date.[11] It was also released internationally, peaking at No. 5 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 3 on the Australian ARIA Charts. Subsequently, remix EPs were made available digitally, including versions by producers such as Zonderling, KDrew, and Dirty South.Promotion

The track was integrated into Zedd's live sets during the promotional campaign leading up to the official True Colors Tour, which launched on August 6, 2015, in Vancouver, and featured the song as a key element in setlists across North America and Europe, including at the Firefly Music Festival on June 19, 2015.[28][29] Jon Bellion joined Zedd for select live appearances, notably a debut performance of the song on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on May 21, 2015, where they were accompanied by Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger and Zedd's brother Arkadi Zaslavski.[30] Additional media tie-ins included a medley performance with Lady Antebellum at the 2015 CMT Music Awards on June 10, blending the track with the country group's "Long Stretch of Love" to crossover audiences.[31] The song also appeared in festival sets, such as Ultra Europe on July 11, 2015, enhancing its presence in electronic dance music events.[32] Radio promotion targeted Top 40 and dance formats in the US and Europe, with the single impacting playlists following its May release and climbing to No. 1 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart on the issue dated August 29, 2015.[33] Sync licensing extended its reach through a T-Mobile commercial titled "Don't Stop the Beat," which aired during the 2015 American Music Awards on November 22 and highlighted Zedd's tour footage.[34] A social media campaign on Zedd's Instagram included teasers building to the official audio premiere on May 13, 2015, utilizing the hashtag #BeautifulNow to engage fans and drive streams.[1] The music video, released on June 11, 2015, served as a key promotional tool, garnering over 247 million views as of November 2025 and amplifying the single's thematic message.[35]Critical reception
"Beautiful Now" received mixed reviews from music critics. In a review of Zedd's album True Colors, Billboard critic Andrew Hampp described the song as "a ballad so mawkish it could be mistaken for satire", critiquing Jon Bellion's "vague niceties" in the lyrics.[3] Sputnikmusic's review noted that while the collaboration was "sub-par", Bellion's vocals stood out as "the best in the mystical 'Beautiful Now'".[36] Insomniac's track-by-track analysis called it a "trance-like and atmospheric" track that elevates a "generic anthem" into a high-energy piece suited for live sets.[26] On user-driven platforms, the song has been more positively received, earning an average score of 79 out of 100 on Album of the Year based on 30 ratings as of 2025.[37]Music video
Production
The music video for "Beautiful Now" was directed by Jonathan Desbiens, professionally known as Jodeb.[38][39] Produced by Vision Film Co., the video was filmed over 12 days in May 2015 across multiple international locations, including six days in Guatemala and six days in the Czech Republic.[38][35] The narrative concept revolves around interconnected stories depicting five individuals confronting personal struggles, with a focus on intense emotions that tie into the song's theme of redemption.[38] A diverse cast of actors, including Katerina Vintrova as Emmaline, Luis Eduardo Escobedo Gowans as Blair, Luiiziitoo Saantay as Hernian, Anton Zaslavski as Isaac, and Tereza Sindelárová as Audrey, portrayed the parallel tales; Zedd appears as Isaac, while Jon Bellion does not appear.[38][39][35] The production utilized cinematic techniques, such as dynamic framing and atmospheric lighting, to emphasize the characters' emotional arcs in a visually striking manner.[38]Synopsis
The music video for "Beautiful Now" interweaves five vignettes depicting individuals confronting personal crises on the edge of life and death, filmed across urban and rural landscapes in the Czech Republic and Guatemala.[38] In the first storyline, a young woman, overwhelmed by a heated breakup, submerges her lover in a pool, only for the victim to be rescued moments later, leading the perpetrator to a stunned realization of the consequences.[40] A second narrative follows an elderly man in a rural Central American setting who bids farewell to his family before mounting a horse to scale a perilous volcano; he stumbles and falls but presses on with quiet determination.[41] The third vignette portrays a young villager whose home is invaded by armed robbers, resulting in his father's death, after which he tracks the intruders and holds them at gunpoint in a tense standoff.[40] Zedd himself stars in the fourth segment as a troubled youth who shoplifts alcohol from a store and brandishes a knife against the clerk during a confrontation.[41] The fifth story centers on a teenage girl who positions herself on active railroad tracks as an oncoming train barrels toward her, narrowly surviving the passage and emerging contemplative.[42] Throughout the 4:12 runtime, key visuals emphasize slow-motion sequences of these high-stakes moments, building tension that resolves into redemptive glimpses of survival and reflection, often synced to the song's rising chorus and instrumental drop.[35] Flashbacks to joyful, carefree episodes—such as dancing, embraces, and laughter—provide stark contrasts to the present peril, heightening emotional depth. Abstract transitions employ light flares and lens effects to fluidly shift between the gritty urban environments of Prague and the rugged rural terrains of Guatemala, underscoring themes of isolation and renewal.[38] The narratives converge symbolically in the climax, where each character encounters their own reflection—through water, mirrors, or shadows—prompting a pivotal choice toward hope and self-forgiveness, culminating in a collective aura of beauty amid adversity that echoes the track's lyrical message of embracing the present.[41]Release and reception
The official music video for "Beautiful Now" premiered on YouTube on June 11, 2015, distributed by Interscope Records.[35][39] As of November 16, 2025, the video has accumulated 247 million views and 2.1 million likes, reflecting sustained audience engagement.[35] Critics praised the video for its emotional depth and inclusive portrayal of diverse narratives, including themes of love, loss, and resilience across global settings; SPIN described it as a "stunning" and "moving" work that "aims high" with thoughtful, interwoven stories.[40] Similarly, Complex lauded its ambitious structure and creative execution in covering multiple vignettes.[41] However, some reviews noted clichéd tropes and underdeveloped elements in the not-overly explained plotlines, such as abrupt resolutions in the character arcs.[40] The video received no major awards or nominations but was highlighted in Complex's 2015 coverage of standout EDM visuals.[41] Its release significantly boosted streams of the single, enhancing the track's promotional momentum within Zedd's True Colors album rollout.Commercial performance
