Brontornis is an extinct genus of giant bird that inhabited Argentina during the Early to Middle Miocene.[1] Its taxonomic position is highly controversial, with authors alternatively considering it to be a cariamiform, typically a phorusrhacid (terror bird) or an anserimorph.

Taxonomy

The first fossils of Brontornis burmeisteri were described by paleontologists Francisco Moreno and Alcides Mercerart in 1891, the fossils being a left femur, tibiotarsus, fibula, and tarsometatarsus all from the same individual found in the Lower-Middle Miocene strata of the Santa Cruz Formation in Santa Cruz Province, Argentina.[2][3] In the same paper, two distal tibiotarsi from the same area were referred to Brontornis as well.[3][4] Unknowingly, Moreno & Mercerat also named a species now seen as synonymous with Brontornis burmeisteri, Rostrornis floweri, that includes: various bill and skull fragments, seven vertebrae and fragments, femoral head, lower part of left femur, ectocondyle of right tibiotarsus.[4][3] Some pedal phalanges and a trochleae of tarsometatarsus were also referred to the type, but they haven't been described in detail.[3] These fossils were found in the lower Miocene Monte León Formation, one of the two formations the taxon is definitively known from.[3][2] Some additional fossils, including a quadrate, were referred to Brontornis by Moreno & Mercerart in 1891, but these were dubiously referred. Mercerat named another taxon synonymized with Brontornis, Stephanornis princeps, in 1893, though the fossil is now lost so this assessment is unverifiable.[3]

Moreno's rival, Florentino Ameghino, also found fossils of Brontornis which he named Brontornis platyonyx in 1895 based on four pedal phalanges found at Monte Leon.[2][3] The species has been synonymized with Brontornis. Ameghino also named Liornis floweri based on a distal tibiotarsus, distal tarsometatarsus, and two pedal phalanges of a juvenile that was synonymized with Brontornis in 1967.[5][3] Liornis minor was also synonymized in 1967, but it has since been synonymized with Phorusrhacos.[3][5] Callornis giganteus, another Ameghino taxon, may also be a synonym of Brontornis or a distinct close relative.[5] Recently, the affinities of some Brontornis specimens has come into question due to the uncertain and debated phylogenetic position of the genus and its synonyms.[2]

Evolution

Recent work has cast doubt on the hypothesis that Brontornis is a phorusrhacid. Brontornis may actually represent an anseriform, with other genera traditionally assigned to Brontornithinae (Physornis and Paraphysornis) being true phorusrhacids. The subfamily containing the latter two had been proposed to be renamed to Physornithinae, with Physornis fortis as the type species. If these conclusions are valid, this would mean that there are three groups of giant basal anseriformes, in chronological order of divergence: the gastornithids (Gastornis and kin), Brontornis, and finally the mihirungs of Australia.[6] However, other analyses have also argued that Brontornis exhibits thoracic vertebrae diagnostic of phorusrhacids, supporting its placement within that group.[6]

Brontornis is a genus of birds (Aves), which is sometimes referred to its own family Brontornithidae. These are very large, flightless birds from the Miocene of South America and are known from very fragmentary material. The exact systematic assignment of Brontornis and the Brontornithidae is very uncertain and in a constant flux, which is largely due to the fragmentary nature of the remains. Originally placed on the base of the Phorusrhacidae ("terror birds"),[1][4] there are several different views on its classification today. After several cladistic studies, the Brontornithidae have been found as basal geese relatives.[7][6] On the other hand, they also form the sister group of the Cariamiformes, which combine today's seriema and the Phorusrhacidae.[8] Since the introduction of the Brontornithidae as a family group, this has mostly been considered monogeneric or monospecific.[3] Some authors have considered other genera as possible relatives, but most of these have been regarded as synonyms of Brontornis[3] or Phorusrhacos.[1] However, a tibiotarsus of a large bird similar to Brontornis was found in Oligocene strata in Salla-Luribay, Bolivia, making it the oldest known Brontornithid fossil known.[9]

Traditionally, Brontornis was usually attributed as a genus to the extinct family of the Phorusrhacidae ("Terror birds"),[1][3] which was quite widespread in South America and comprises large to very large, mostly predatory birds. These are related to the seriama, sharing features such as a hook-shaped upper beak and the curved ungues, which had sharp claws and thus distinguish the birds as predatory carnivores. Within the Phorusrhacids, Brontornis was referred to their own subfamily of Brontornithinae, very large and massive birds which also included physical territories and paraphysis. The allocation to the Phorusrhacidae was mainly based on the strong lower jaw symphysis and the targeted Tarsometatatarsus at the front and back, and was supported by Herculano M. F. Alvarenga and Elizabeth Höfling in 2003.[1] A revision of the genre of Federico L. Agnolin in 2007 rejects the assignment based on these characteristics to the Phorusrhacids, since they also occur in other early large running birds, for example in Anserimorphs or within the Dromornithidae.[6] The rotation of the middle shape of the Tibiotarsus and the construction of the square leg suggest for a closer relationship with the goose family (aneriform) rather than Phorusrhacidae.[6][2] For these reasons, Brontornis was excluded from the Phorusrhacids and moved to the base of the goose birds by Agnolin.[6][2] Physornis and Paraphysornis, on the other hand, have been considered close relatives of Brontornis in their own subfamily in Phorusrhacidae, Brontornithinae,[10][1] though it is sometimes referred to as Physornithinae.[11][12][6]

This phylogenetic position for Brontornis had originally been favored by the first descriptions of the genus, but Mathilde Dolgopol de Sáez classified it as a relative of geese and Gastornis in 1927.[13] Subsequently, after Agnolin's revision, his analysis was met with some approval from other paleontologists, but disagreements from other.[14][15]

A phylogenetic analysis of Phorusrhacidae in 2011 again concluded that Brontornis was justified in the placement with the special expression of a fragmented thoracic vertebrae.[16] Once again, suggesting that Brontornis sat within Anserimorpha.[11]

With other cladist analyses suggested the structure of resemble that of Anserimorphs.[17] The lack of the striking bone footbridge (Pons Supratendineus) on the front of the lower joint of the tibiotarsus of Brontornis was also pointed out several times, which in occurs in the Phorusrhacidae.[5][18] Furthermore, the short and robust construction of the mandible contrasts to the long and slim mandibles of Phorusrhacids, again suggested that Brontornis isn't a phorusrhacid. According to the examinations already mentioned, the different design of the lower jaw also results in a different diet of Brontornis than Phorusrhacids.[18][13]

However, a study from 2017 suggested that Brontornis belonged to sister taxon to Cariamiformes. As a result, the genus moved close to the Phorusrhacidae, but not directly in it.[19] Suggesting that the previous study a misinterpreted the orientation of the tarsometatarsus as a central point of systematic assignment of Brontornis. It was pointed out that, the previous studies only used sparse material of Brontornis. However, a 2021 study once again found Brontornis to be a Gastornithiform.[2]

Description

Due to the size of the finds, a height of 280 centimetres (9.2 ft) is assumed. The pronounced massiveness of the bones leads to weight estimates between 350 and 400 kilograms (770 and 880 lb)[1] or 319 to 350 kilograms (703 to 772 lb),[17][13] however, some finds have clear size differences that can reach up to 33% based on the tarsometatarsus. A comparison of the tarsometatarsi of two B. burmeisteri specimens, FM-P13259 and MLP-91 (lectotype), both coming from the same geographical region and geological formation, shows them as not to present any anatomical differences, apart from size, where in the first is around one third smaller than the second. The idea is that they are examples of intraspecific variation, possibly sexual dimorphism. There is the possibility that they represent two species.[20] These measures would make Brontornis the fourth-heaviest bird found thus far, after Aepyornis maximus, Dromornis stirtoni, and Pachystruthio dmanisensis.[20]

There is uncertainty about the species' diet, due to the lack of well preserved skull material and overlap between specimens.[17] Due to the original placement within the "terror birds" grouping, some researchers believe that Brontornis could have been a carrion eater.[1] Correspondingly, art and skull reconstructions depicted Brontornis with a sharp and hooked top beak,[1] though paleontologists are unsure because the tip of the preserved mandibles is missing.[13]

Contrarily, some paleontologists have proposed an herbivorous diet for Brontornis.[6] Studies on the lower jaw indicate that it was most likely not suitable for tearing animal food. The width and strong lower jaw is similar to that of Gastornis and Aepyornis, two herbivorous large birds. Likewise, the ungues of Brontornis do not show stronger bends compared to Phorusrhacids and thus do not allow raptor-like claws for tearing meat, which suggests a more plant-based diet.[18][13] Considering its enormous body size, it is assumed that Brontornis inhabited more open landscapes, as they have also been proven for the Santa Cruz formation.[21] The short and wide Tarsometatarsus compared to the Tibiotarsus suggests a slow locomotion adapted to the enormous body mass.[16]

Discovery and Naming

Etymology

The genus name Brontornis is derived from the Ancient Greek words brontē (βροντή), meaning "thunder," and ornis (ὄρνις), meaning "bird," collectively translating to "thunder bird" and alluding to the taxon's enormous size and imposing, resonant presence. The specific epithet burmeisteri honors Hermann Burmeister (1807–1892), the prominent German-Argentine naturalist and director of the Museo Público de Buenos Aires, who played a key role in early fossil collecting efforts in Patagonia and advanced the study of Argentine paleontology. The taxon was formally named and described in 1891 by Francisco P. Moreno and Alcides Mercerat in their publication "Catálogo de los pájaros fósiles de la República Argentina conservados en el Museo de La Plata" (Anales del Museo de La Plata, v. 1), where they interpreted the remains as those of a gigantic, flightless bird akin to modern waterfowl but of thunderous proportions.[4][5] This nomenclature follows a pattern seen in other South American giant birds, such as Phorusrhacos ("rag-bearer"), emphasizing their formidable attributes.[4]

Type Specimen

The type series of Brontornis burmeisteri was formally described in 1891 by Francisco P. The lectotype, designated MLP 88-91, consists of the left femur, partial left tibiotarsus, left fibula, and left tarsometatarsus belonging to a single individual.[4] These elements were recovered from strata near Lago Argentino in Santa Cruz Province, Patagonia, Argentina, corresponding to the Early to Middle Miocene (approximately 17.5–11.6 million years ago).[4] The original type series also included fragmentary tarsometatarsi (MLP 88-92, a left element preserving the median and internal trochleae; and MLP 88-93, a right element with the median trochlea). Referred specimens expand the known material of B. burmeisteri and include additional postcranial elements from the Santa Cruz Formation in the same region. For instance, two incomplete left tibiotarsi from the Santa Cruz Formation—MLP 20-110 (distal half) and MLP 20-581 (distal end)—have been attributed to this species based on shared morphological features such as robusticity and trochlear proportions.[4] The earliest potential representative of Brontornithidae, the family encompassing Brontornis, is an unnamed taxon from the late Oligocene Salla Formation in Bolivia, known from hindlimb bones that exhibit brontornithid-like proportions but cannot be confidently assigned to the genus. These fossils formed part of broader collections amassed during late 19th-century paleontological expeditions across Patagonia, with storage and study at the Museo de La Plata, founded by Francisco Moreno.

A subsequent cladistic analysis by Agnolin (2021) recovered Brontornis within a Gastornithiformes clade, closely allied with Gastornis and dromornithids, supported by graviportal hindlimb metrics (e.g., tibiotarsus/tarsometatarsus ratio of 1.88) and the absence of a supratendinal bridge on the tibiotarsus; this positioning implies four most parsimonious trees with 1564 steps.[2][1] A 2024 Bayesian phylogenetic analysis by Degrange et al. further supported phorusrhacid affinity, placing Brontornis within Phorusrhacidae with strong posterior probability (≈1) as sister to Physornis and Paraphysornis in the subfamily Physornithinae, based on hindlimb characters and integration into a broader terror bird phylogeny.[3] These conflicting phylogenetic placements carry significant implications: an anseriform or gastornithiform affinity would challenge assumptions of terror bird gigantism as exclusively tied to carnivory, suggesting instead a parallel radiation of massive, herbivorous Galloanseres in post-Paleogene South America. The reliance on incomplete skeletal material continues to limit cladistic resolution, with ongoing analyses needed to clarify whether Brontornis represents a neoavian predator or a divergent anserimorph giant.[1][2]

Description

Osteology

The postcranial skeleton of Brontornis burmeisteri is primarily represented by hindlimb elements, including an incomplete femur, tibiotarsus, and tarsometatarsus from the lectotype (MLP 88-V-23-1), as well as referred specimens such as a complete tarsometatarsus (FM-P13259). These bones exhibit a robust morphology consistent with a graviportal, weight-bearing build, characterized by dense cortical bone and minimal pneumaticity in the preserved elements. The femur is notably short and massive, featuring a transversely wide patellar groove, prominent impressiones obturatoriae for muscle attachment, and a lateral excavation on the medial surface of the condylus lateralis. The tibiotarsus is elongate with a strong cnemial crest, a nearly straight shaft that is proximally ellipsoidal in cross-section, and a distally anteroposteriorly compressed end; it lacks an ossified supratendinal bridge (pons supratendineus) and possesses an unbifurcated canalis interosseus distalis that opens solely to the incisura intertrochlearis lateralis. The robust tarsometatarsus is short, wide, and craniocaudally flattened, with a block-like hypotarsus featuring a distinct medial crest and a small distal vascular foramen, further emphasizing adaptations for supporting substantial body mass rather than speed.[9][10][1] Cranial elements of Brontornis remain virtually unknown, with no preserved skull material available; inferences about its head structure are thus drawn from postcranial comparisons and limited isolated bones like the quadrate (MLP 20-111), which bears two condyles with the caudal one reduced, differing from the three-condyle condition in some relatives. This scarcity necessitates reliance on hindlimb osteology for taxonomic and anatomical assessments. Distinctive traits include the pedal phalanges, which are short, robust, and blocky, with massive, transversely wide, and ventrally flat non-ungual phalanges and triangular ungual phalanges that lack sharp, hooked tips, consistent with non-predatory foot function for stability rather than grasping or slashing. Referred specimens, such as a tarsometatarsus approximately 25% smaller than the lectotype, indicate intraspecific variation in bone robusticity, potentially attributable to sexual dimorphism.[9][10][1][7] In comparisons with other large flightless birds, Brontornis shares hindlimb proportions with Physornis, particularly the block-like hypotarsus and overall robusticity of the tarsometatarsus, supporting close morphological affinities. It differs from Phorusrhacos in exhibiting less cursorial adaptations, such as a shorter, wider tarsometatarsus (length/width ratio of 5–6) and absence of features like a bifurcated canalis interosseus, aligning instead with a graviportal posture.[10][1][11]

Size and Proportions

Brontornis burmeisteri is estimated to have reached a height of approximately 2.8 meters (9.2 feet) when measured from the ground to the top of the head with the neck extended, based on scaling from preserved hindlimb bones such as the femur (approximately 42 cm long) and tibiotarsus (75 cm long).[12][7] The height at the shoulder or back level is estimated at around 1.75 meters, highlighting the contribution of a relatively long neck to the overall stature.[12] Weight estimates for Brontornis range from 350 to 400 kg (770–880 lb), derived from allometric scaling of hindlimb bone circumferences compared to extant ratites like ostriches and extinct elephant birds such as Aepyornis maximus.[7] More refined volumetric models based on skeletal reconstructions suggest a slightly lower range of 319–350 kg.[12] These figures position Brontornis among the heaviest known birds, comparable to species such as Pachystruthio dmanisensis (over 400 kg) but smaller than Vorombe titan (average 643 kg), Dromornis stirtoni (450–500 kg), and Aepyornis maximus (approximately 450 kg).[7][13] In terms of proportions, Brontornis exhibited a graviportal build with hindlimbs comprising about 60% of its total height, as inferred from the combined lengths of the femur, tibiotarsus (75 cm), and tarsometatarsus (40 cm), which support a bipedal stance and an elevated center of gravity.[7][1] The long neck, accounting for roughly 35% of the height difference between shoulder and head levels, is inferred from relative bone lengths and comparisons to ratites, indicating adaptations for foraging or vigilance.[12] Scaling methods rely on allometric relationships to ostriches (Struthio camelus) and elephant birds, with potential variations in estimates attributable to sexual dimorphism or ontogenetic stage in the limited fossil sample.[7][1]

Paleoecology

Habitat and Distribution

Brontornis burmeisteri was endemic to Patagonia in southern Argentina, with all known fossils recovered from the Santa Cruz Formation and the Monte León Formation.[14][7] The genus is restricted to the Santacrucian South American Land Mammal Age of the late Early Miocene, dating to approximately 17.5–16 million years ago.[15] The paleoenvironment of these formations featured a mosaic of open temperate humid forests, semi-arid woodlands, grasslands, ponds, and marshlands across the Andean foreland, under a subtropical climate with annual rainfall of 1000–1500 mm and pronounced seasonality, including cool wet winters and dry warm summers.[15][16] This setting occurred during the Miocene Climatic Optimum, preceding the major biotic exchanges of the Great American Biotic Interchange and supporting high South American endemism.[15] Brontornis coexisted with diverse vertebrates in these ecosystems, including early litopterns and notoungulates, as well as other giant flightless birds like Phorusrhacos; no direct competitors for its niche are evident in the fossil assemblages.[15][3]

Phylogenetic analyses suggest differences from phorusrhacids such as Phorusrhacos, indicating it was ill-suited for hunting large prey.[17] Some analyses reconstruct it as omnivorous or zoophagous, potentially consuming small animals, insects, or carrion, while others propose a primarily herbivorous strategy akin to gastornithids, inferred from limited cranial material.[17][4] Blunt phalanges on the pedal bones further support scavenging or low-level foraging, as they indicate limited grasping ability for active pursuit.[4] The absence of stable isotope studies, due to the fragmentary fossil record primarily consisting of hindlimb elements, limits direct confirmation of its trophic niche.[4] Locomotion in Brontornis was graviportal, emphasizing stability over speed to accommodate its estimated 350–400 kg body mass.
