"Call You Mine" is a song by American production duo The Chainsmokers featuring American singer-songwriter Bebe Rexha. It was released as a single on May 31, 2019, along with its music video, serving as the fourth single from the duo's third studio album World War Joy.[2] "Call You Mine" marks The Chainsmokers' third collaboration with Bebe Rexha, following their remixes of "Take Me Home" by production trio Cash Cash, featuring Rexha on vocals, and their remix of her debut solo single, "I Can't Stop Drinking About You".[citation needed] Its music video won Best Dance Video at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards.[3]
Promotion
[edit]On May 28, 2019, both The Chainsmokers and Bebe Rexha shared a snippet of the music video, tagging each other and captioning it "Friday" and "FRIDAY 5/31", respectively.[4][5]
Music video
[edit]The music video was directed by Dano Cerny.[6] The music video is shown in reverse, and is about Rexha, implied to have stopped being a fan of the Chainsmokers, plotting the murder of them. She gives a sexy dance in a club, which the duo enjoys, then proceeds to poison their drinks before dragging them to her car and driving away from the cops.[7]

Call You Mine
View on GrokipediaBackground and development
Concept and writing
"Call You Mine" was conceived as a romantic electropop track delving into themes of possessive love and longing, reflecting the intense desire to claim a partner amid relational uncertainty.[8] The song's creation was inspired by The Chainsmokers' eagerness to reunite creatively with Bebe Rexha, building on their established partnership after successful prior tracks.[9] The writing credits are attributed to The Chainsmokers—comprising Alex Pall and Drew Taggart—alongside Bebe Rexha and co-writer Ali Tamposi, with additional contributions from producers Louis Bell and Andrew Watt.[10] The songwriting process commenced in early 2019 during studio sessions for what would become the World War Joy EP, serving as a promotional precursor to The Chainsmokers' anticipated full-length album.[11] Central to the lyrics are explorations of uncertainty in relationships, where the recurring phrase "call you mine" symbolizes a yearning for commitment and exclusivity despite emotional risks. Bebe Rexha infused the track with personal touches of vulnerability, drawing from her own experiences to heighten the song's emotional authenticity.[1] This marked the first featured vocal collaboration between The Chainsmokers and Rexha, following her uncredited background vocals on "Don't Let Me Down" in 2016 and their earlier remix work together.[12]Recording and production
"Call You Mine" was recorded in 2019, with primary production led by The Chainsmokers and co-producer Andrew Watt.[12] Bebe Rexha's vocals were captured in multiple takes to achieve a wide dynamic range, incorporating ad-libs that added emotional depth to the performance, while Chainsmokers member Andrew Taggart contributed additional layers of synthesizers.[13] The production featured pulsating bass drops, synth-heavy verses, and a gradual build-up leading into the chorus, elements that defined the track's EDM-pop structure; it was mixed by Jordan Stilwell.[14] Following edits to streamline the drop sections for optimal radio compatibility, the song's final runtime was established at 3:37.[15] "Call You Mine" is an electropop song composed in G major with a tempo of 104 beats per minute (BPM). It features a moderate energy level of 70% and danceability of 59%, blending electronic production with pop sensibilities. The track follows a standard verse–pre-chorus–chorus structure, including two verses, a repeating pre-chorus and bridge, a post-chorus, and an outro. It was written by Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall of The Chainsmokers, along with Steve Mac, Alexandra Tamposi, Andrew Wotman, and Tony Ann, and produced by The Chainsmokers and Andrew Watt.[16][13] Lyrically, the song explores themes of intense romance, nostalgia, and relational uncertainty in a young love on the brink of fading. It reflects on the excitement of early connection—"Two kids with their hearts on fire"—contrasted with current estrangement, culminating in a plea for recommitment: "Can I call you mine?" The chorus recalls a pivotal moment of vulnerability and possession, emphasizing regret over lost passion. Bebe Rexha provides the lead vocals, delivering lines with emotional intensity.[12]Release and promotion
Single release
"Call You Mine" was released digitally worldwide on May 31, 2019, through Columbia Records as the fourth single from The Chainsmokers' third studio album, World War Joy.[17][12][2] The track was distributed in standard digital download format and made available for streaming on major platforms including Spotify and Apple Music.[18][19] It was initially bundled as part of a four-track EP titled World War Joy... Call You Mine, which also included "Do You Mean" featuring Ty Dolla $ign and bülow, "Kills You Slowly", and "Who Do You Love" with 5 Seconds of Summer.[11] A promotional CD single followed later in 2019 via Sony Music.[20] In the United States, the song received radio airplay promotion, with adds to Top 40 stations and Hot AC formats in the weeks following its digital launch. A remix package was issued digitally on July 19, 2019, featuring versions by Lookas, Keanu Silva, Asketa & Natan Chaim, and others.[21][22] The single served as a key promotional tie-in for The Chainsmokers' World War Joy tour.[23]Marketing efforts
The Chainsmokers and Bebe Rexha began promoting "Call You Mine" with teasers on May 28, 2019, sharing 15-second clips from the upcoming music video and countdown graphics across social media platforms including Instagram stories and Facebook, which featured cryptic previews drawing from Rexha's previous work to generate buzz ahead of the Friday release. A pre-save link was also provided to fans, encouraging early engagement.[24][25] The single was cross-promoted as part of The Chainsmokers' third studio album World War Joy, with announcements highlighting its role in the project's ongoing rollout alongside collaborations like those with 5 Seconds of Summer and Ty Dolla $ign, tying into the album's thematic artwork and narrative of joyful chaos. Upon release on May 31, 2019, "Call You Mine" secured placements on major streaming playlists such as Spotify's New Music Friday, amplifying its reach to millions of listeners.[24][10] Andrew Taggart of The Chainsmokers discussed the collaboration with Rexha in radio and podcast interviews shortly after launch, emphasizing her vocal contributions and the song's emotional depth during appearances like the Apple Music show in early June 2019. The track made an early live debut during a performance on NBC's Today show Citi Concert Series on June 21, 2019, where The Chainsmokers and Rexha delivered it alongside other World War Joy material to a live audience in New York City. The music video dropped simultaneously with the single on May 31, 2019.[26][27][2]Critical reception
"Call You Mine" received generally positive reviews from music critics, who praised its catchy production and Bebe Rexha's vocals, though some noted its formulaic nature. OutLoud Culture described it as an "EDM banger" with emotional depth, predicting it could become a hit.[28] Music Matters Media called it a "fun pop song" that is "extremely relatable lyrically" and makes listeners want to "vibe to and dance along with."[29] Billboard highlighted its "upbeat rhythm" and melody that "simmers with just a hint of sensual darkness."[2] In a mixed review, The Edge SU awarded it 60 out of 100, commending the "well-produced" track and "catchy chorus" that showcases Rexha's voice, but criticizing its "predictable" and "safe" approach with "unoriginal lyrics."[30]Music video
The music video for "Call You Mine" was directed by Dano Cerny and released on May 31, 2019, alongside the single.[3][31] It stars The Chainsmokers' Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart alongside Bebe Rexha and unfolds in reverse chronology as a noir thriller set in a Los Angeles nightclub. The story begins with Rexha driving a Mercedes with the unconscious duo in the back, rewinding to reveal a night of dancing and flirtation that ends with Rexha poisoning them out of obsessive love, followed by her fleeing from police.[8][32] Produced by Hound Content, the video has garnered over 400 million views on YouTube as of May 2025.[3][4] It won Best Dance Video at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards.[8]Commercial performance
