Debut and initial launch
The Changan CS35 Plus was developed as a premium successor to the original Changan CS35 subcompact SUV, which had been in production since 2012 and catered to entry-level urban drivers, with the Plus model offering upgraded features for buyers seeking greater refinement and technology integration.[1] Positioned in the competitive subcompact SUV segment, it emphasized enhanced connectivity and modern amenities to appeal to tech-oriented city dwellers.[4] The vehicle made its global debut at the 2018 Chengdu Auto Show on August 31, 2018, where Changan highlighted its design as a "connected SUV" with intelligent features co-developed with Tencent, including an AI in-car system for seamless access to entertainment and navigation services.[1] This initial reveal showcased the model's compact dimensions—4,335 mm in length, 1,825 mm in width, and 1,660 mm in height—optimized for urban maneuverability while promising a more upscale experience over its predecessor.[4] Following the auto show, the CS35 Plus received its official launch in China on October 31, 2018, in Guangzhou, with eight trim levels priced from 69,900 yuan to 104,900 yuan to ensure broad accessibility.[4] The initial powertrain consisted of a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated Blue Core engine (JL478QEP) delivering 128 horsepower (94 kW) and 161 Nm of torque, mated to either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission for efficient city driving.[4] Early marketing campaigns focused on the model's affordability and practicality for urban environments, underscoring its compact footprint alongside entry-level luxuries such as LED headlights for improved visibility and a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system integrated with the Tencent ecosystem for voice-activated controls and multimedia.[4] These elements positioned the CS35 Plus as an intelligent, value-driven option in China's burgeoning connected vehicle market.[1]2021 facelift
The 2021 facelift of the Changan CS35 Plus was announced by Changan Automobile in early March 2021, with an official launch on March 10, 2021, serving as a mid-term refresh to better align the model with the brand's evolving family design language while building on the original 2018 introduction.[5] This update introduced subtle evolutionary enhancements aimed at improving visual appeal and user experience without overhauling the core platform. Production of the facelifted version commenced in 2021 for both the domestic Chinese market and select export destinations, with introductory pricing starting at approximately 69,900 yuan.[6] Exterior revisions focused on a more dynamic and cohesive appearance, featuring a larger front grille with a prominent "large-mouth" air intake and integrated red decorative accents for a sportier vibe.[5] The headlights were updated to slimmer LED units connected by an LED daytime running light bar, complemented by sharper overall front bumper styling and new alloy wheel designs.[7] At the rear, the taillights were redesigned into a connected, through-type LED setup for a modern, unified look, while faux skid plates were removed to streamline the profile.[7] Inside, the cabin received a refreshed layout with a redesigned dashboard incorporating softer, higher-quality materials and chrome accents on elements like air-conditioning vents and center console buttons.[5] Key updates included a dual-screen setup comprising a 9-inch full LCD instrument cluster and a larger 10.25-inch central touchscreen, alongside a new three-spoke multifunction steering wheel and relocated HVAC controls below the vents for improved ergonomics.[7] Connectivity was enhanced through the infotainment system, supporting basic smartphone mirroring, though native Apple CarPlay and Android Auto required aftermarket integration in many markets.[8] The powertrain was updated with the introduction of a 1.4-liter turbocharged Blue Whale engine delivering 158 horsepower and 260 Nm of torque, mated to a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission, replacing the previous 1.6-liter naturally aspirated unit and providing significantly improved performance over pre-facelift figures.[5] These changes contributed to improved efficiency, achieving a combined fuel consumption of approximately 6.1 L/100 km under standard testing conditions.[9]Design and features
Exterior styling
The Changan CS35 Plus is a 5-door subcompact crossover SUV measuring 4,335 mm in length, 1,825 mm in width, 1,660 mm in height, and offering 180 mm of ground clearance, providing a compact yet practical footprint for urban driving.[2] Its body design emphasizes a rugged, athletic stance with pronounced wheel arches and a relatively high ride height that enhances its SUV character without compromising maneuverability in tight spaces.[10] In its pre-facelift form from 2018 to 2020, the CS35 Plus featured angular lines that conveyed a dynamic, edgy aesthetic, complemented by split LED headlights that separated the main beams from daytime running lights for a distinctive front fascia. The design incorporated a floating roof effect achieved through dark C-pillars and roof rails, paired with standard 17-inch alloy wheels that underscored its youthful, sporty profile.[11][12] The 2021 facelift introduced refinements for a more premium and cohesive appearance, including a bolder hexagonal grille that integrates seamlessly with slimmer LED daytime running lights and sculpted side fenders for enhanced muscularity. Higher trims offer optional 18-inch alloy wheels, chrome accents on the grille and window surrounds, and integration with a panoramic sunroof that accentuates the floating roofline. Aerodynamic elements such as roof rails for utility and a shark-fin antenna contribute to overall efficiency, while color options extend up to eight exterior shades across markets, allowing customization between vibrant hues like red and more subdued grays.[7][2][13]Interior and comfort
The Changan CS35 Plus features a five-passenger seating configuration with 60/40 split-folding rear seats, providing 403 liters of cargo space in standard form that expands to 950 liters when the rear seats are folded. This layout emphasizes urban practicality, including underfloor storage in the cargo area for added versatility.[14] Interior materials vary by trim and model year, with soft-touch plastics adorning the dashboard and door panels across all variants for a premium feel. Higher trims incorporate leatherette upholstery, often in dual-tone schemes with red accents on seats and door cards, while pre-facelift models (pre-2021) used simpler fabric seating that was updated in the 2021 refresh to more refined dual-tone options and ambient lighting for enhanced cabin atmosphere. Base trims feature cloth seats and manual air conditioning, whereas premium variants add a panoramic sunroof and wireless charging pad for greater convenience.[15][16][5] Comfort amenities include dual-zone automatic climate control with rear vents and PM0.1 air filtration in select models, ensuring equitable temperature distribution. The driver's seat offers multi-way adjustability, including lumbar support in higher trims, while heated front seats are available on premium configurations for colder climates. Rear passengers benefit from adequate space, with reviews noting sufficient headroom and legroom for adults up to 178 cm tall—approximately one fist plus for headspace and two fists for legroom—making it suitable for family use despite its compact footprint. The infotainment screen integrates seamlessly into the dashboard for a cohesive layout.[17][18][19][20]Technology and infotainment
The Changan CS35 Plus features a central infotainment system centered around a 10.25-inch floating touchscreen display, which serves as the primary interface for vehicle controls and entertainment. This system runs on Changan's Incall 3.0 intelligent platform, co-developed with Tencent for deep integration into the "All in Car" ecosystem, enabling seamless person-to-vehicle, person-to-person, and person-to-content interactions. It supports core functions such as built-in navigation, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free calling and audio streaming, and multimedia playback from external sources. Higher trims include over-the-air (OTA) update capabilities to enhance software features and performance remotely.[19][21] Connectivity options emphasize practicality, with standard Bluetooth pairing and multiple USB ports—typically two in the front console and additional rear outlets for charging and media playback—totaling up to four across the cabin. While native Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not standard, the system supports wireless phone mirroring via Changan's Carbit Link technology in post-facelift models, allowing screen projection from compatible smartphones. An optional 360-degree camera system provides surround-view imaging for parking assistance, displayed directly on the infotainment screen in premium variants.[22][3][23] The audio setup includes a six-speaker system tuned for balanced sound distribution throughout the cabin, with steering-wheel-mounted controls for volume, track skipping, and call management to minimize driver distraction. Voice recognition functionality, integrated into the Incall 3.0 platform, allows natural language commands for tasks like navigation routing, climate adjustments, and media selection, enhancing hands-free operation. The 2021 update added faster processing for smoother interface navigation and introduced wireless mirroring compatibility.[24][25][26] Additional convenience technologies include keyless entry with a smart remote key for proximity unlocking and remote engine start, paired with push-button ignition for effortless starting. Premium trims equip a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, providing customizable displays for vehicle data, navigation prompts, and infotainment integrations, complementing the overall tech ecosystem without overlapping into advanced driver assistance features.[27][17][23]Specifications
