Press It is the debut studio album by South Korean singer Taemin. It was released on February 23, 2016, by SM Entertainment.[3] The title song for the album is "Press Your Number".

Background and release

[edit]

On February 15, 2016, SM Entertainment announced Taemin would release his first full album entitled Press It on February 23.[4] On February 22, a performance video for "Drip Drop" was uploaded to YouTube.[5] The official music video for the album's single, "Press Your Number", came out the next day on February 23.[6] Prior to the album and "Press Your Number" music video release, Taemin performed two showcases for the press and fans on February 22. The fan showcase was streamed live through Naver's V app.[7]

Composition

[edit]

Press It was produced over the course of a year and a half. The title track, "Press Your Number", was originally written by Bruno Mars, with composition by The Stereotypes. The demo was originally made years prior and was purchased by SM Entertainment. Taemin said that he did not meet with Mars to work on the song.[8] Taemin did, however, pen new lyrics for the song in order to appeal to the Korean market. In addition, another song given to him for this album was "Already", written and composed by his bandmate Jonghyun.[9] While on Jonghyun's Blue Night radio show, Taemin talked about how he took special care in selecting every song on the album himself, even though he didn't write them all. "Soldier" was the first song he had written for an album and it was conceived during his travels abroad.[10] The final song on the album, "Hypnosis", was originally supposed to be included on Taemin's debut EP Ace.[11]

Release and critical reception

[edit]

Press It reached number one on Gaon Album Chart.[12] On the US Billboard charts, Press It debuted at number two on the World Albums chart[13] and number seven on the Heatseekers chart.[14] On March 1, Taemin received his first music show award for "Press Your Number" on SBS's The Show[15] and during the same week won awards for Show Champion,[16] M! Countdown,[17] and Music Bank.[18]

Press It is the debut studio album by South Korean singer Taemin, a member of the boy band SHINee, released on February 23, 2016, by SM Entertainment. The album marks Taemin's first full-length release following his 2014 mini-album Ace, and it features ten tracks blending pop, R&B, and electronic dance music elements, with the lead single "Press Your Number" showcasing a sultry, retro-inspired sound.[1][2] Produced in collaboration with various songwriters and including Taemin's first songwriting credits on "Press Your Number" and "Soldier", the record highlights his maturation as a solo artist. Upon release, Press It achieved commercial success in South Korea, topping the weekly Hanteo and Synnara album sales charts and debuting at number two on the Gaon Monthly Album Chart with 76,684 copies sold in its first month.[3][4] By the end of 2016, it ranked 18th on the Gaon Yearly Album Chart, accumulating 115,232 units.[5] Internationally, the album peaked at number two on the Billboard World Albums chart and at number seven on the Heatseekers Albums chart, while the single "Press Your Number" reached number three on the World Digital Song Sales chart.[6][7][8] The project received praise for its cohesive sound and Taemin's charismatic performances, solidifying his position as a prominent figure in K-pop's second generation.[9]

Development

Background

Taemin, the youngest member of the South Korean boy group SHINee, began transitioning toward a solo career while continuing group activities following the release of his debut extended play Ace in August 2014.[10] This mini-album marked him as the first SHINee member to pursue individual endeavors, building on his established role as a dancer and performer within the group since their 2008 debut.[11] The shift allowed Taemin to explore personal artistic concepts, setting the foundation for more ambitious solo projects amid SHINee's busy schedule of tours and releases.[12] On February 15, 2016, SM Entertainment announced via press release that Taemin would release his first full-length solo album, Press It, on February 23, positioning it as a significant milestone after approximately 1.5 years of preparation since Ace.[12] Taemin was deeply involved in conceptualizing the album, contributing lyrics to several tracks, including the lead single "Press Your Number," to convey themes of longing and emotional intensity.[11] This project represented his evolution as an artist, emphasizing innovative dance and music elements developed over the extended preparation period.[10] Pre-release activities built anticipation, starting with teaser images and videos unveiled on February 16 and 17.[10] A performance video for the pre-release track "Drip Drop" was released on February 22, showcasing Taemin's choreography in a futuristic R&B style.[13] That same day, Taemin held an album showcase at the SMTOWN COEX Artium in Seoul, performing selections from Press It for media and fans, highlighting the album's cohesive vision.[11]

Recording and production

The production of Press It took place over approximately one and a half years, following the release of Taemin's debut extended play Ace (featuring the single "Danger") in August 2014.[14] This extended timeline allowed for extensive collaboration with international and domestic producers to craft the album's sound. The project marked Taemin's first full-length solo effort under SM Entertainment, involving meticulous studio sessions focused on blending pop sensibilities with intricate vocal and rhythmic elements. Recording primarily occurred at SM Entertainment's facilities in Seoul, where engineers such as Woo Min-jung and Jeong Eui-seok handled key sessions for multiple tracks, including mixing and digital editing. Additional international input came remotely or through co-productions, as seen in the title track "Press Your Number," which was produced by Bruno Mars, Philip Lawrence, and The Stereotypes; Taemin adapted the Korean lyrics alongside Tenzo & Tasco to fit the urban dance-pop style. Similarly, "Already" (titled "Beolsseo" in Korean) was written and produced by Taemin's SHINee bandmate Jonghyun in collaboration with Teddy Riley, Adam, and Dom, with Taemin contributing background vocals to enhance the R&B-infused ballad. For "Soldier," Taemin wrote the lyrics and provided background vocals, while the composition and arrangement were handled by Aaron Benward, Felicia Barton, and Matthew Tishler, emphasizing emotional piano-driven balladry. Taemin played an active role throughout the process, participating in vocal direction and background vocals on select tracks like "Already" and "Soldier" to refine the performances, and guiding the overall artistic direction toward a fusion of dance-pop energy and mature sensuality. The album comprises 10 tracks with a total runtime of 37 minutes and 24 seconds, showcasing a diverse range of genres while prioritizing Taemin's vocal nuances and choreographic synergy.[15][2]

Music and artwork

Composition

Press It is Taemin's debut studio album, blending elements of dance-pop, contemporary R&B, and electronic music, characterized by sensual and mature themes that reflect his artistic growth from earlier solo releases focused on youthful energy to more introspective and seductive expressions.[2][16] The album's ten tracks showcase a diverse range of styles, emphasizing Taemin's versatility as a performer and songwriter while exploring themes of desire, vulnerability, and resilience.[17] The title track, "Press Your Number," is an upbeat urban dance-pop song with electronic influences, featuring lyrics centered on a phone motif that conveys longing and invitation in a relationship.[18][19] Clocking in at 3:46, it is composed in the key of A♯ minor, with a tempo of 120 BPM that drives its mid-tempo groove.[20] Among the standout tracks, "Drip Drop" incorporates future bass elements with R&B undertones, evoking water-themed sensuality through dripping sound effects and immersive production that heightens the track's intimate atmosphere.[21] "Already" stands out as a poignant ballad co-written and produced by fellow SHINee member Jonghyun, delving into themes of regret and farewell with emotive vocals and minimalistic arrangement.[22] "Soldier," a motivational track with hip-hop inflections, features Taemin's self-penned lyrics that symbolize perseverance and protection in love, marking a personal evolution in his songwriting.[23][24] Instrumentation across the album heavily relies on synthesizers for atmospheric depth, prominent bass drops in the electronic tracks to amplify energy, and layered vocals that enhance Taemin's expressive delivery, creating a cohesive yet varied sonic landscape.[18][21] Songwriting credits highlight Taemin's growing involvement, with him contributing lyrics to three tracks: co-writing "Press Your Number" with Tenzo & Tasco, fully penning "Soldier," and participating in "Guess Who" with additional collaborators like Kenzie. Other tracks feature contributions from producers such as Park Sung-hee for "Drip Drop," Jonghyun for "Already," and various SM Entertainment staff for the remaining songs, underscoring a collaborative effort that supports Taemin's mature artistic voice.[25][23][17]

Packaging and artwork

The packaging of Press It features a sturdy square format with a thick photobook enclosed in a non-plastic cover, designed for durability and aesthetic appeal.[26] The album is available in multiple versions, including A, B, C, and D, each with distinct cover art showcasing Taemin in varied poses that emphasize a sensual and mysterious aesthetic.[27] Each version includes a CD, a photo booklet filled with high-quality images from the album's photoshoot, a random photocard, and in some cases, a folded poster.[28] The photobook highlights behind-the-scenes elements and diverse concepts, such as Taemin in tied-up or piano-playing scenarios, tying into the album's overall futuristic and intimate theme inspired by digital interactions like pressing phone buttons.[29] The artwork, produced by S.M. Entertainment's in-house team, uses bold colors and lighting to evoke a digital, "pressed" vibe that complements the title track's phone motif.[2]

Promotion and release

Singles and promotion

The lead single from Press It, "Press Your Number", was released on February 23, 2016, alongside the album. The accompanying music video, directed by Beomjin J., presents a cinematic narrative involving Taemin as a fugitive in a high-stakes chase, incorporating themes of seduction through stylized dance sequences and visual motifs of pursuit and desire.[30] Two performance videos for the track followed shortly after: Version 1, released on February 23 and filmed at the Los Angeles River to highlight intricate footwork and solo choreography, and Version 2, released on February 25, which emphasized mirrored dance formations with backup dancers.[31] [32] Prior to the album's launch, "Drip Drop" served as the pre-release track, with its performance video unveiled on February 21, 2016, showcasing Taemin's fluid movements in a minimalist setting to build anticipation.[33] Promotional efforts included teaser images released in the weeks leading up to the album, depicting Taemin in bold, colorful poses that hinted at the record's mature aesthetic.[34] On February 22, Taemin held an album showcase in Seoul for press and fans, featuring live renditions of tracks from Press It and discussions on the project's creative direction.[10] Live promotions commenced immediately after release, with Taemin performing "Press Your Number" on major South Korean music programs, including his comeback stage on M Countdown on February 25, 2016, followed by appearances on Music Bank on February 26.[35] [36] The track earned four music show wins in March 2016, including victories on The Show (March 1), Show Champion (March 2), M Countdown (March 3), and Music Bank (March 4), marking a successful rollout.[37] These performances tied into broader SHINee activities, such as integrating solo elements into the group's SHINee WORLD TOUR IV in Japan – The Dizzy dates starting in March 2016. Additional marketing encompassed radio interviews in South Korea, where Taemin elaborated on the album's themes, and fan events focused on the Seoul showcase, with parallel promotions in Japan leading to the Japanese version of "Press Your Number" on February 26, 2016.[10]

Release formats and regions

Press It was released on February 23, 2016, in South Korea by SM Entertainment.[38] The album was issued in digital download format, enabling immediate global availability through major streaming and purchase platforms such as iTunes and Spotify.[1] Physical releases consisted of CD editions in three distinct versions—A, B, and C—each with unique artwork, packaging, and included photocards to appeal to collectors.[27] The standard Korean CD edition carried the catalog number SMK-0632.[27] Internationally, distribution was handled primarily by SM Entertainment, with digital releases reaching markets including Japan via EMI Records shortly after the Korean launch; the Japanese digital single for the title track "Press Your Number" followed on February 26, 2016.

Reception

Critical response

Upon its release in February 2016, Taemin's debut studio album Press It received largely positive reviews from K-pop critics, who commended its sensual themes, mature artistry, and Taemin's growth as a performer. Allkpop praised the album's sultry beats and seductive lyrics across its ten tracks, noting how they emphasized Taemin's evolving sensuality and dance-focused identity, with particular acclaim for the title track "Press Your Number" and its urban pop vibe, written by Bruno Mars.[18][22] Korean media outlets echoed this sentiment, focusing on Taemin's vocal development and the album's innovative choreography. Allkpop highlighted how tracks like the ballad "Already" featured time changes that effectively showcased Taemin's improved vocal range and emotional depth, marking a step forward from his 2014 mini-album Ace.[18] The Bias List awarded "Press Your Number" a near-perfect 9.5 out of 10, lauding its crisp funk production, layered vocals, and nimble chorus, while giving the pre-release single "Drip Drop" an 8.5 for its daring glitchy sound and extraordinary performance video, though noting its jittery beat as initially off-putting.[39][40] Criticisms were minor but present, often centering on production choices and track consistency. The Bias List pointed out that "Drip Drop" lacked a strong baseline and memorable hook amid its overwhelming array of sounds, potentially making it feel repetitive in its EDM-infused restlessness.[40] Some reviewers, including user aggregates on sites like Rate Your Music, critiqued the album's ballads for occasionally lacking vocal depth despite strong lyrics, averaging a 3.4 out of 5 from over 400 ratings, which reflected a solid but not flawless reception.[17] Overall, the album was seen as a bold statement in 2016's solo landscape, prioritizing conceptual sensuality and performance over exhaustive vocal experimentation.

Commercial performance

Press It achieved solid commercial success upon its release, selling 115,232 physical copies in South Korea according to Gaon Chart data (now known as Circle Chart) through 2016, marking Taemin's highest-selling solo album at the time.[5] This figure contributed to its certification as gold by the Recording Industry Association of Korea (RIAK) for surpassing 100,000 units in 2016.[41] In its debut week, the album recorded 72,563 copies on the Hanteo Chart, setting a personal record for Taemin's first-week sales and topping both Hanteo and Synnara weekly rankings. Digital performance was strong, with downloads propelling it to the top of iTunes Album Charts in 7 countries upon release. Revenue from physical sales alone was estimated at approximately 2 billion KRW, underscoring its profitability in the domestic market. In Japan, it sold approximately 9,000 physical copies via Oricon tracking, reflecting modest but notable international demand.[42][43] Post-release, streaming contributed to sustained growth, with the album amassing 78.7 million plays on Spotify as of November 2025, driven by tracks like "Press Your Number" (26 million streams) and "Drip Drop."[44] This steady accumulation highlighted the album's enduring appeal amid evolving consumption trends.

Legacy and accolades

Accolades

The title track "Press Your Number" from Taemin's debut studio album Press It achieved significant recognition on South Korean music programs in early 2016, securing four wins. It first triumphed on SBS MTV's The Show on March 1, earning Taemin his inaugural music show award as a solo artist.[49] The following day, March 2, it claimed victory on MBC Music's Show Champion, marking Taemin's second win for the track.[50] On March 3, "Press Your Number" won on Mnet's M Countdown, competing closely against MAMAMOO's "You're the Best" and solidifying its chart dominance.[51] The streak concluded with a fourth win on KBS2's Music Bank on March 4, where it outperformed GFRIEND's "Rough" in the final scoring.[52] At the 2016 Mnet Asian Music Awards held on December 2, "Press Your Number" received the Best Dance Performance – Solo award, highlighting Taemin's innovative choreography and stage presence as a standout solo contribution that year.[53] The album Press It itself garnered acclaim at the 31st Golden Disc Awards on January 14, 2017, winning the Album Bonsang in recognition of its commercial and artistic success, with SHINee member Minho accepting the award on Taemin's behalf.[54]

Cultural impact and legacy

Press It solidified Taemin's position as a solo icon in K-pop, serving as a pivotal career milestone that showcased his evolution from SHINee's maknae to an independent artist capable of leading mature, experimental concepts. The album's bold aesthetic and intricate choreography established a benchmark for his subsequent releases, including the 2017 mini-album Move, which built on its sensual motifs with even more provocative staging, and the 2023 full-length Guilty, where Taemin further explored themes of desire and introspection in his songwriting and visuals. This progression highlighted Taemin's growing artistic autonomy, influencing his reputation as a trendsetter who consistently pushes the boundaries of male solo performances in the industry.[55][56] The album pioneered sensual dance-pop within male K-pop solos, blending R&B grooves with theatrical elements that emphasized fluidity and emotional depth in choreography, a style that diverged from the high-energy group dynamics prevalent at the time. Tracks like "Press Your Number" introduced a noir-inspired narrative with intimate, body-focused movements, setting a template for vulnerability in male idol expressions that resonated beyond 2016. This innovation inspired a wave of covers and choreography recreations, particularly on TikTok, where user-generated content featuring the title track amassed millions of views by 2025, fueling viral dance challenges among global fans and aspiring performers.[57][58] By 2025, Press It continued to shape Taemin's enduring legacy as a dance virtuoso, with media retrospectives marking its 9th anniversary through fan-driven tributes and analyses of its lasting choreography influence, often highlighted in Instagram reels celebrating SHINee's solo milestones. The album's title track alone surpassed 26 million streams on Spotify, contributing to the project's overall digital footprint exceeding 78 million album streams on the platform, underscoring its sustained popularity across generations. Taemin's post-release momentum also amplified his international fanbase, leading to rapid sell-outs of his 2018 Japan arena tour across 32 shows, which drew from the heightened visibility Press It brought to his solo persona in key markets.[59][44][60] Furthermore, Press It's impact extended to fourth-generation idols, many of whom cite Taemin as a role model for his pioneering approach to performance artistry, with groups like NCT incorporating similar sensual and narrative-driven elements in their solos and concepts. This influence is evident in acknowledgments from artists such as NCT's Ten and Haechan, who have publicly praised Taemin's dance precision and conceptual depth as inspirational cornerstones for their own careers.[61][55]
