Synopsis
Queen of Masks follows the lives of four women whose close college friendship is tested by long-buried secrets from a decade ago. The story begins with a reunion at Joo Yoo Jung's bridal shower, where successful lawyer Do Jae Yi, arts foundation chairwoman Joo Yoo Jung, and ambitious hotel vice president Yoon Hae Mi gather after years apart.[6] Their former friend Go Yoo Na unexpectedly returns from the United States, having been implicated as a murderer due to lies and a betrayal in a murder case for which they falsely accused her, covering up their own involvement.[1][6] Do Jae Yi, a renowned human rights attorney and social media influencer, balances her public persona as a defender of the vulnerable with private ambitions to become mayor, including covert dealings with corrupt politicians.[2] As Go Yoo Na reenters their world, driven by the search for her missing daughter and a quest for justice over the past deception, tensions escalate among the friends, whose polished lives—marked by professional success in law, culture, and business—begin to crack under the weight of hidden truths.[2][1] The narrative unfolds through investigations into the old crime, instances of blackmail, and profound moral dilemmas that force each woman to confront their roles in the betrayal.[7] Leading to a climactic confrontation, the series explores the unraveling of their facades as Go Yoo Na's revenge plot intensifies, threatening to expose the lies that bound and divided them, forcing confrontations over their shared past.[2][6]Themes and analysis
The series Queen of Masks explores central themes of betrayal and fractured female friendships, as four college friends reunite after a decade, only for long-buried secrets to erode their bonds.[8] The narrative delves into the masks of ambition and success that conceal deep vulnerabilities, portraying how high-achieving women maintain facades amid personal traumas.[8] Revenge serves as a catalyst for uncovering truth, propelling the protagonists to confront past injustices and reclaim agency.[5] On a broader level, the drama offers social commentary on patriarchal pressures faced by high-achieving women in elite Korean society, highlighting how systemic inequalities exacerbate personal conflicts.[9] Morally grey characters embody jealousy, desire, and power struggles, illustrating the tensions between solidarity and individual ambition in a male-dominated world.[8] Issues such as sexual assault and corruption underscore the vulnerability of even the most powerful women, critiquing societal complicity in perpetuating injustice.[5] Symbolically, the "masks" motif represents the facades of perfection that the characters wear to navigate social expectations and hide their flaws, with protagonist Do Jae-yi's collection of masks visually reinforcing themes of deception and identity.[8] The bridal shower scene symbolizes lost innocence and the onset of relational fractures, marking a turning point where superficial harmony gives way to underlying tensions.[8] A pivotal murder cover-up illustrates complicity in systemic injustice, serving as a metaphor for how elite individuals evade accountability for their actions.[9] Character arcs deepen these themes, with each woman's journey reflecting the conflict between solidarity and self-interest; for instance, Do Jae-yi's transformation from a betrayed lawyer to a figure of justice mirrors her personal reckoning through legal battles against corruption.[5] Go Yoo-na's return after fleeing highlights the costs of betrayal and the desire for redemption, while Ju Yu-jeong and Yoon Hae-mi's paths explore jealousy and addiction as barriers to genuine friendship.[8] Ultimately, the ensemble's evolving dynamics underscore the potential for female unity to overcome patriarchal manipulation, though not without moral ambiguity.[5]Cast and characters
Main cast
Kim Sun-a portrays Do Jae-yi, a prominent human rights lawyer known for defending the vulnerable and building a substantial social media following through her advocacy work.[10] Jae-yi is depicted as ambitious and resilient, navigating complex moral landscapes while aiding political figures to advance her own career aspirations, all while concealing personal traumas from her past.[11] Sun-a's performance captures Jae-yi's principled yet cautious demeanor, drawing on her experience in intense roles to convey the character's internal conflicts and determination.[9] Oh Yoon-ah stars as Go Yoo-na, who was framed for a murder a decade ago, leading to her incarceration and subsequent flight to the United States where she rebuilt her life with marriage and a daughter.[10] Upon returning, Yoo-na emerges as vengeful and manipulative, her transformation marked by a hardened resolve to confront those who betrayed her.[11] Yoon-ah embodies this evolution through a layered portrayal that shifts from apparent normalcy to simmering intensity, highlighting the character's post-incarceration psyche and driving the central revenge dynamics.[8] Shin Eun-jung plays Joo Yoo-jung, the ambitious and ruthless chairwoman of the Young Woon Arts Foundation, whose path to success is shadowed by past losses, including the death of her first love, and recent engagements that test her stability.[10] Yoo-jung's character is defined by her corporate savvy and unyielding drive, often prioritizing power amid unfolding conflicts with her former friends.[11] Eun-jung's interpretation brings depth to Yoo-jung's ruthless edge, using subtle expressions to illustrate her navigation of personal vulnerabilities within high-stakes professional environments.[5] Yoo Sun depicts Yoon Hae-mi, a guilt-ridden and empathetic executive who serves as the first female vice president at the Mariana Hotel, having risen through hard work while concealing her impoverished family background and history of addiction.[10] Hae-mi's arc involves empathetic support for her friends juxtaposed against her own remorse over past events, contributing to the group's entangled conflicts.[11] Sun's empathetic delivery underscores Hae-mi's internal guilt, portraying her as the emotional anchor among the leads with a performance that balances warmth and underlying turmoil.[5]Supporting cast
Oh Ji-ho portrays Choi Kang-hoo, Do Jae-yi's boyfriend and a restaurant owner who becomes entangled in the central mystery through his secret investigations into the women's shared past, ultimately escalating the conflict by uncovering evidence of corruption before his demise.[5] His role provides emotional support to Jae-yi while advancing subplots related to betrayal and hidden family ties among the protagonists. Lee Jung-jin plays Song Je-hyeok, the primary male antagonist and director of an orphanage, who is revealed as the masked assailant from a decade-old incident that shattered the four friends' lives; as the ex-husband of Go Yoo-na and fiancé to Joo Yoo-jung, he manipulates relationships to sustain his illicit operations, driving the narrative's themes of vengeance and deception.[5][9] His actions heighten tensions by exploiting the women's vulnerabilities, forcing confrontations that reveal backstories of abuse and cover-ups. Shin Ji-hoon appears as Cha Leo, a key figure in Yoon Hae-mi's personal circle, contributing to subplots involving family dynamics and corporate intrigue at the Mariana Hotel, where his involvement helps expose internal conflicts and alliances. His character aids in revealing backstory through interactions that highlight Hae-mi's professional pressures. Song Young-chang depicts Kang Il-goo, a powerful conglomerate chairman and Jae-yi's undisclosed biological father, who serves as the overarching villain by founding the secretive Angels' Club and orchestrating murders to protect his empire, thereby propelling the plot toward its climax through escalating threats to the group.[5] Jang Eui-soo plays Jo Yong-pil, a dedicated associate in Jae-yi's law firm who assists in legal maneuvers and investigations, supporting the main narrative by providing procedural insights and comic relief amid high-stakes cases without delving into the protagonists' personal arcs. His role facilitates the uncovering of evidence tied to the antagonists' schemes.Production
Development
The development of Queen of Masks began with the formal announcement of its production on December 5, 2022, when RaemongRaein Corporation disclosed a production and supply contract with Channel A valued at 11.2 billion KRW, marking a significant investment equivalent to about 27.3% of the company's 2021 revenue.[12] This agreement positioned the series as a key project for Channel A's Monday-Tuesday prime-time slot, with an initial planned premiere in March 2023 and a runtime of 70 minutes per episode across 16 episodes.[13] The creative team was led by screenwriter Im Do-wan, making his television drama debut after establishing a reputation writing Korean musicals, and director Kang Ho-joong, who envisioned the project as a female-centric thriller exploring complex interpersonal dynamics among women.[14][15] The initial concept centered on a tale of deep friendship shattered by betrayal, evolving into a revenge narrative where past lies resurface to threaten the protagonists' success and solidarity.[16] Script development drew influences from real-life social issues, including women's solidarity amid professional challenges and scandals within elite circles such as law, politics, and media, emphasizing themes of hidden truths versus protective facades in a competitive society.[17] Im Do-wan noted that revisions intensified the narrative, making it more provocative and fatal than the original planning stage, with heightened stakes in character motivations and plot twists to amplify emotional and suspenseful elements while maintaining the 16-episode structure.[17]Casting and filming
The casting process for Queen of Masks began in late 2022, with Kim Sun-a entering discussions to star as the lead character Do Jae-yi, a prominent human rights lawyer known for defending the vulnerable. Her involvement was officially confirmed in January 2023, marking her return to television in a role that leveraged her reputation for embodying resilient and multifaceted women in prior dramas.[18][11] The ensemble was rounded out with Oh Yoon-ah cast as Go Yoo-na, the overseas returnee entangled in the central conflict; Shin Eun-jung as Joo Yoo-jeong, the arts foundation director; and Yoo Sun as Yoon Hae-mi, the hotel executive. These selections emphasized experienced actresses capable of navigating intense emotional dynamics among the four friends. Director Kang Ho-joong commended the lineup, stating it was "perfect without question," as each performer brought an unquestionable authenticity to their role without needing extensive deliberation. No open auditions were reported, with the process focusing on negotiations with established talent to assemble the group quickly.[11][19] Filming for the 16-episode series took place primarily in Seoul starting in early 2023, capturing the drama's high-society atmosphere through urban settings like corporate high-rises and upscale residences. The production schedule aligned with the Monday-Tuesday broadcast slot, incorporating techniques such as dynamic cinematography to heighten suspense in key confrontation scenes. Kim Sun-a prepared for her role by researching legal and advocacy procedures to authentically portray a celebrity attorney. The shoot proceeded without significant delays or budget issues, concluding in time for the premiere on April 24, 2023.[16]Broadcast and release

Queen of Masks received mixed reviews from critics, who praised its strong female leads and suspenseful twists while critiquing its melodramatic excess and occasional predictability.[8] The South China Morning Post described it as a "tacky but enjoyable high-society soap," highlighting the compelling dynamics among the four central women navigating power and betrayal.[8] Reviewers noted the series' ability to maintain tension through jaw-dropping revelations, particularly in the finale, though some found the soapy theatrics restrained compared to similar prime-time melodramas.[5] Key praises centered on the acting, with Kim Sun-a's portrayal of Do Jae-yi earning acclaim for its intensity and emotional depth as a determined lawyer seeking justice.[5] The ensemble's chemistry among the female characters was lauded for effectively representing women's issues in high-society settings, contributing to a female-centered narrative.[3] However, criticisms included pacing issues in the middle episodes, where the plot occasionally dragged amid repetitive conflicts, and elements that felt overly predictable despite the twists.[28] Audience reception was generally positive, with an average score of 7.2/10 on MyDramaList from 395 users, reflecting appreciation for the suspense and character development.[3] On Viki, it scored 8.9/10 from 1,899 ratings, indicating strong engagement among international viewers.[2]Awards and nominations
