Snagit (formerly SnagIt[3]) is screen capture and screen recording software for Windows and macOS. It is created and developed by TechSmith and was first launched in 1990. Snagit is available in English, French, German, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish versions.

Snagit replaces the native print screen function and extends it with additional features.[4]

Features

[edit]

The features are structured around the three main steps of the software workflow:[5] capture, edit and share.

Capture

[edit]

Snagit Capture allows the user to capture an image or record a video. There are various capture methods, including fullscreen selection, specific region selection, menu selection, text recognition (OCR with Grab text) and panoramic selection. Alternatively, the software can record a video (from a specific region or fullscreen).

Hotkeys (Windows) and shortcuts (Mac) are available to speed up the capture process.

The Snagit Capture file (.snagx)[6] is a cross-platform compatible file format used to store image captures both on Windows and Mac. Snagit 2021 and earlier versions stored image captures in .snag (Windows) and .snagproj (Mac) formats; the two formats were not compatible.

Videos recordings are stored in .mp4 format.

Edit

[edit]

Using Snagit Editor, a captured image can be resized, annotated with arrows and callouts, or given other effects such as borders. Another feature is to create a video from the captured images (narrating a set of screenshots).

The software also allows the creation of tutorials (using the Step tool[7] and/or using the Simplify tool, which allows you to create Simplified User Interfaces[8]). There are also confidentiality features (blurring areas, cropping images). Video editing is limited to basic features such as trimming.

Share

[edit]

The resulting image or video can be shared as a local file (supported formats include PNG, JPEG, HEIF, WebP and MP4), to another application (Microsoft Outlook, Apple Mail, Camtasia) or uploaded online (YouTube, Google Drive, FTP).

Although most of the main features are identical between the Windows and Mac versions of the software, some effects are specific to one version [9] (e.g.the watermark effect is only available on Windows and the reflection effect only on Mac).

TechSmith Fuse (Android and iOS)

[edit]

Snagit can connect through Wi-Fi to the TechSmith Fuse app. Images, videos and screen recordings stored on mobile devices can be sent directly to the Snagit file library.

History

Origins and Early Development

TechSmith Corporation was founded in 1987 by Bill Hamilton as a custom software development firm in , initially focusing on consulting services for businesses and educational institutions. Hamilton, a graduate with a background in , recognized the challenges faced by technical professionals in capturing and sharing visual information from computer screens. This led to the creation of Snagit (originally stylized as SnagIt), which debuted as a product in 1990 as a basic screen capture utility for Windows operating systems. The tool's initial purpose was to enable users, particularly technical communicators and trainers, to capture static images from their screens for use in documentation, manuals, and educational materials, addressing the limitations of early Windows print-screen functions. Early versions of Snagit were rudimentary, emphasizing simplicity and reliability over advanced features. Snagit 1.0, released in , provided core functionality for full-screen or window-specific screenshots in format, without built-in editing capabilities, capture, or video support. By 1993, version 2 introduced minor enhancements like improved capture options and basic output scaling, while remaining limited to static image grabs and distributed primarily as to encourage widespread adoption among professionals needing quick visual aids. These releases catered specifically to the needs of technical communicators, allowing them to illustrate software interfaces and processes efficiently in an era when digital documentation was emerging. Throughout the , Snagit operated under a model, where users could try the software for free before purchasing a , which helped it gain traction in professional and academic circles despite competition from basic OS tools. By the late , TechSmith transitioned Snagit to a full commercial licensing structure, reflecting its growing popularity and the company's shift toward product-based revenue as a dedicated software provider. This evolution solidified Snagit's role as an essential tool for , laying the groundwork for its expansion beyond mere screenshots. Bill Hamilton remained involved with TechSmith as chairman until his death on December 15, 2024.

Key Milestones and Version Evolution

Snagit's development in the marked its expansion from basic image capture to include dynamic content recording. Video recording capabilities were introduced in version 4.0 in 1997, enabling users to capture screen actions as files. Version 7, released in 2004, enhanced these features, including web capture of video files, allowing users to capture screen actions and audio alongside static screenshots for more versatile documentation and tutorials. The product's branding evolved around 2010 with the standardization of the name to Snagit, dropping the capitalized "It" from the original SnagIt for improved consistency across marketing and documentation materials. This change coincided with version 10's release, which enhanced capture workflows and editor tools to support growing user demands for efficiency. During the 2010s, Snagit advanced its capture technology with the introduction of panoramic scrolling capture in version 13 (June 2016), enabling seamless recording of long or wide content such as full web pages, documents, or spreadsheets without manual stitching. This feature significantly improved usability for technical writers and educators handling extended interfaces. In recent years, Snagit shifted toward AI integration and modern licensing. Version 2023 (October 2023) simplified annotations with tools like Screen Draw, allowing real-time on-screen markup during video recordings using customizable arrows, shapes, and step numbers to streamline feedback and instructional . The following year, version 2024 (early 2024) enhanced video stability through a new recording engine supporting 60 frames per second, better audio-video , and reduced file sizes by 10-20% for smoother performance in professional workflows. A pivotal change occurred in 2025 with the transition to an annual subscription model starting with version 2025.0 (February 12, 2025), replacing perpetual licenses to provide ongoing updates and support; base individual pricing was set at $39 per year. This release debuted Screentelligence, a suite of AI-powered features including Step Capture, which automatically records user clicks and generates editable, numbered step-by-step guides from screenshots for effortless .
