Microsoft Ignite is an annual conference for developers, IT professionals and partners, hosted by Microsoft. The first conference, then known as TechEd, happened in 1993 in Orlando, Florida, United States.
After the TechEd conference held in Barcelona, 2014, Microsoft changed its conference schedule and introduced the name Microsoft Ignite starting in 2015. Thus marking the transition from the TechEd name to the current one.
The conference normally lasts between three and five days, and consists of presentation and whiteboard sessions and hands-on labs. It offers opportunities to meet Microsoft experts, MVPs and community members. Networking is enhanced through parties, community areas and "Ask the Expert" sessions. The event also includes an exhibition area where vendors can show off technologies and sell products. There is a vast content catalog from which attendees can select sessions that will be most beneficial. An agenda is published online before the conference begins. From 2024, Microsoft merged its partner event, Microsoft Inspire, with Microsoft Ignite to have one single event for both formats.[1]

Origins in TechEd
Microsoft TechEd was launched in 1993 in Orlando, Florida, as a conference designed to deliver technical education to IT professionals on emerging Microsoft technologies, including the newly released Windows NT 3.1 operating system and related server tools.[5][22] The event drew approximately 3,000 attendees in its inaugural year, focusing on practical skills for deploying and managing Windows-based systems amid the shift toward client-server architectures.[23] Key milestones in TechEd's early growth included the introduction of regional events, beginning with the first European edition in 1996 in Nice, France, to address international demand for localized training. Expansion continued with the launch of TechEd India in 2003, targeting the burgeoning developer community in Asia, and TechEd Africa in 2005 in Sun City, South Africa, to support IT infrastructure development across emerging markets.[23] These additions emphasized hands-on training tailored to regional needs, such as server deployment in diverse environments, while maintaining a core focus on empowering IT professionals with actionable expertise.[24] The format evolved from modest initial gatherings into expansive multi-day events, incorporating interactive sessions, demonstrations, and dedicated hands-on labs that allowed participants to experiment with Microsoft software in real-time.[25] By the mid-1990s, attendance at the annual North American flagship event had surged to over 7,000, with structured tracks on system administration and certification preparation.[23] Certifications became integral, integrating testing centers and prep resources to align with programs like the Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP), which had debuted in 1992.[26] TechEd solidified Microsoft's position as a leader in IT education by fostering a global community of skilled practitioners and promoting certification as a benchmark for professional competency.[27] The conference's emphasis on practical, technology-driven learning helped bridge the gap between product releases and enterprise adoption, influencing industry standards for technical training throughout the 1993–2014 period.[28]Rebranding to Ignite
In July 2014, Microsoft announced the unification of several conferences into a single enterprise technology event to replace TechEd and encompass a broader scope beyond traditional technical education. The name Microsoft Ignite was revealed on October 16, 2014, ahead of the final TechEd Europe event in Barcelona from October 27–31.[6][29] This shift unified several disparate events—including TechEd, the Management Summit, and dedicated conferences for Exchange, SharePoint, Lync, and Project—into a single enterprise technology conference, streamlining logistics and enhancing overall impact based on customer and partner input.[29][6] The primary motivations for the rebranding aligned with Microsoft's strategic pivot under CEO Satya Nadella toward cloud computing via Azure and modern enterprise platforms, seeking a more dynamic and inspirational branding to ignite innovation in mobile and cloud-centric environments.[29] By consolidating content around enterprise solutions like cloud infrastructure, big data, and productivity tools, Ignite aimed to deliver not only education but also forward-looking vision and guidance to better serve IT professionals navigating digital transformation.[29][6] Initial Ignite events introduced heightened emphasis on executive keynotes, such as those delivered by Satya Nadella, to set a strategic tone, alongside deeper integration of Microsoft's partner ecosystem for collaborative sessions and networking.[29] The debut conference, held May 4–8, 2015, at Chicago's McCormick Place, attracted over 23,000 attendees, marking it as one of Microsoft's largest gatherings to date.[30] On a global scale, the rebranding preserved regional editions while applying the updated unified format, as seen in the transition of events like TechEd New Zealand to Ignite NZ in 2015, ensuring localized relevance with the new innovative emphasis.[13]Merger with Microsoft Inspire
In 2024, Microsoft announced the merger of its annual partner-focused event, Microsoft Inspire, with Microsoft Ignite to create a unified flagship conference that combines technical content for IT professionals and developers with business and partner tracks.[31] This integration aimed to streamline Microsoft's event portfolio by bringing together customers, partners, and internal teams in a single platform, fostering greater collaboration and efficiency in delivering insights on cloud, AI, and digital transformation.[32] Previously, Inspire had served as the primary venue for partner ecosystem announcements, awards, and strategy sessions since its rebranding from the Worldwide Partner Conference in 2016.[20] The merger was implemented starting with Microsoft Ignite 2024, held as a hybrid event from November 18 to 22 in Chicago, Illinois, featuring shared keynotes and integrated programming to enhance partner engagement while maintaining the event's core technical depth.[33] Key elements included dedicated partner tracks alongside IT and developer sessions, with live and virtual access to over 300 sessions, allowing seamless interaction between audiences without fragmenting the experience.[34] This structure enabled partners to participate in technical deep dives, such as those on Azure AI integrations, while accessing business-oriented content like the Microsoft Partner of the Year Awards, which recognized 144 winners from 113 organizations across 115 countries.[20] The merger contributed to record-breaking attendance at Ignite 2024, with over 200,000 registrations globally and more than 14,000 in-person attendees in Chicago, reflecting heightened interest from both customer and partner communities.[3] New sessions emphasized AI-driven partnerships, including breakout tracks on leveraging the Microsoft AI Cloud Partner Program for business growth and innovations like AI-powered tools in Partner Center to assist with compliance and opportunity identification.[35] These additions underscored the event's role in accelerating partner-led AI adoption, with announcements highlighting expanded opportunities in areas like Azure AI Foundry and Microsoft 365 Copilot integrations.[34] As of 2025, the unified Ignite format continues as Microsoft's premier annual event, scheduled for November 18–21 in San Francisco, California, with a sustained focus on AI-era innovations to further empower the partner ecosystem alongside technical advancements.[4] This ongoing integration positions Ignite as a central hub for ecosystem-wide collaboration, building on the 2024 success to drive broader adoption of Microsoft's cloud and AI solutions.[17]Event Format
