The Brightside World Tour[1] was the fourth concert tour by American folk rock band the Lumineers, in support of their fourth studio album, Brightside (2022). The tour began on February 24, 2022, in Nottingham, and concluded on September 3, 2022, in Chicago.
Background
[edit]On May 20, 2021, the band first announced tour dates in Europe for early 2022. These dates were originally announced as a standalone leg before Brightside was first announced. On February 8, 2022, the band then officially announced the Brightside World Tour, making the European leg now part of the tour, along with announcing North American dates for summer 2022. The tour was set to begin on February 1, 2022, in Prague, but instead began on February 24, 2022, in Nottingham due to ongoing concerns of the COVID-19 pandemic. Several shows from this tour were rescheduled from III: The World Tour back in 2020. Tickets from the postponed III: The World Tour dates were honored at the new dates for this tour.

Announcement and planning
On May 20, 2021, The Lumineers announced their return to Europe with a series of arena and amphitheater shows scheduled for early 2022.[7] This initial reveal focused on dates across Central and Western Europe, including the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, the UK, and Ireland, with tickets going on presale to fan club members shortly after. The full Brightside World Tour was officially unveiled on February 8, 2022, expanding the itinerary to include a comprehensive North American leg alongside the European dates, positioning the outing as the main promotional vehicle for the band's fourth studio album, Brightside, released on January 14, 2022, via Dualtone and Decca Records.[2] The album's tracks, including the title song and "Big Shot," were integrated prominently into the setlist planning to showcase the new material live for the first time.[1] Planning for the tour encompassed approximately 62 shows across Europe and North America, emphasizing major venues such as arenas in urban centers and outdoor amphitheaters during the summer months to accommodate larger crowds. Later, in May 2022, two dates in South Africa were added to conclude the tour.[2][3] Several dates were rescheduled from the band's prior III: The World Tour, which had been disrupted in 2020, allowing original ticket holders to attend the updated performances while adding fresh stops to the route.[8]COVID-19 impact
The COVID-19 pandemic forced the postponement of The Lumineers' III World Tour dates originally planned for 2020 and 2021, with several of those shows ultimately rescheduled and integrated into the Brightside World Tour as part of the band's return to live performances.[9][10] For instance, the band's September 15, 2020, concert at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City was moved to August 13, 2022, as part of the Brightside itinerary, honoring original tickets for the delayed event.[11] Ongoing pandemic restrictions led to a shift in the tour's start date from an earlier planned slot on February 1, 2022, at Tipsport Arena in Prague, Czech Republic, to February 24, 2022, at Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham, England.[12] The European leg, initially announced with 22 dates, was scaled back to 11 shows due to lingering COVID-19 concerns and venue limitations.[13] Planning for the tour incorporated health protocols aligned with local regulations, including venue capacity limits and requirements for proof of vaccination or negative testing at early 2022 dates to ensure attendee safety.[14] These measures reflected the evolving pandemic landscape, with organizers monitoring trends and exceeding minimum guidelines where necessary.[10]Promotion and production
Marketing campaigns
The Lumineers launched the BRIGHTSIDE Tour Club in February 2022 as a fan membership program providing presale access to tickets and exclusive content, such as behind-the-scenes updates and merchandise offers, to build early excitement for the tour.[15] Announced on February 10, 2022, via the band's official social media, the club offered a four-day presale window starting February 14 for North American dates, prioritizing members for premium seating and fostering direct fan engagement.[8] To generate hype, the band released promotional video content, including "BRIGHTSIDE World Tour: Episode 1" on their official YouTube channel on March 7, 2022, featuring tour videographer Austin Roa discussing tour preparations and performing snippets of songs, while encouraging viewers to join the Tour Club for ticket access.[16] This episode, part of a series teasing the tour's visual and musical elements, garnered over 43,000 views and served as an entry point for fans to explore the connection between the tour and the supporting Brightside album.[16] Ticket sales and announcements were handled through partnerships with major platforms Ticketmaster and Live Nation, which facilitated presales and general onsales starting February 18, 2022, for the initial North American leg.[17][18] These collaborations enabled seamless distribution, with Citi cardmembers receiving additional presale opportunities, helping to sell out multiple venues quickly.[19] Social media campaigns amplified the album-tour synergy by sharing teasers of setlist highlights from Brightside tracks and announcements of special guests like Caamp and James Bay, posted across Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter to drive ticket sales and fan interaction.[20][21] For instance, posts in early 2022 highlighted guest performances to underscore the tour's collaborative energy, linking back to the album's themes of renewal and community.[22]Sustainability initiatives
The Brightside World Tour collaborated with the environmental nonprofit REVERB, a partner since 2019, to integrate eco-friendly practices across its operations, including the establishment of 51 nonprofit activations at shows (hosted by 26 nonprofits) to promote climate action.[6] Key efforts focused on waste reduction, with the tour avoiding more than 52,000 single-use plastic bottles through the provision of water refill stations and reusable bottles for fans, artists, and crew.[6] Venue-level initiatives further supported sustainability, as 88% of stops offered vegan entrees to minimize animal agriculture impacts, 97% provided recycling facilities, and 42% included composting options; excess catering was donated to local food banks or shelters at select shows, while batteries were reclaimed and hotel toiletries redistributed to community organizations.[6] To address the tour's carbon footprint, a comprehensive offset program neutralized 12,875 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions via investments in verified climate projects, with over $210,000 allocated specifically to climate justice initiatives and decarbonization efforts within the music industry.[6] Production elements emphasized resource efficiency, incorporating reusable serviceware for catering and buses, alongside the elimination of single-use signage at 78% of venues to reduce waste.[6] On-stage setups utilized energy-efficient LED lighting, including 112 modules of SACO A12 LED integrated into custom-framed set pieces by Tait Towers, which supported the tour's modular stage design across multiple dates.[23] The sustainability program also achieved significant charitable outcomes, surpassing its fundraising target by raising over $750,000 for nonprofits through fan donations, Eco-Village events, and direct contributions, such as $80,000 to MusiCares for music community support and $5,000 grants to local environmental organizations in each tour city.[6]Setlist and performances
Typical setlist
The typical setlist for the Brightside World Tour opened with the title track "Brightside" from the band's fourth studio album, setting an energetic tone for the performance.[24] This was followed by a mix of staples including "Cleopatra" from the 2016 album Cleopatra, "Ho Hey" and "Flowers in Your Hair" from the 2012 self-titled debut, "Angela" from the debut, "A.M. RADIO" from Brightside, and "Dead Sea" from the debut.[25] These songs formed the backbone of the main set, blending new material with fan-favorite hits to maintain high engagement throughout the show.[26] The setlist balanced representation across the band's discography, featuring approximately 3-4 tracks from Brightside—such as "Brightside," "A.M. RADIO," and "Where We Are"—alongside 4-5 selections from the self-titled album (e.g., "Ho Hey," "Angela," "Flowers in Your Hair," "Dead Sea," and "Slow It Down") and 3-4 from Cleopatra (e.g., "Cleopatra," "Ophelia," and "Sleep on the Floor").[25] Additional tracks from III (2019), like "Gloria" and "My Cell," rounded out the selection, ensuring a retrospective feel while prioritizing the promotional focus on Brightside.[24] Encores typically concluded with "Ophelia" or "Sleep on the Floor," often followed by "Stubborn Love" from the debut album, providing an uplifting close.[25] The overall runtime averaged 90-100 minutes, encompassing 18-20 songs in a structured format that allowed for audience interaction and acoustic elements.[26] While minor variations occurred between early tour dates in May-June 2022 and later shows in August-September—such as occasional inclusions of covers like "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?"—the core 18-20 song structure remained consistent across the 66 documented performances.[25]Special guests and notable shows
The Brightside World Tour featured a rotating lineup of opening acts that varied by leg and date, bringing diverse folk, indie, and rock influences to the performances. These included folk artist Gregory Alan Isakov for select North American dates from July 12 to August 16, 2022; the band CAAMP for shows from May 18 to June 17 and September 3, 2022; British singer-songwriter James Bay for specific U.S. arena dates; pop artist Ashe for early summer North American stops; soulful performer Abraham Alexander for European dates in 2023 extensions; and tenor Daniel Rodríguez for summer 2022 North American concerts alongside Isakov.[2][8][27][28][29][30] Among the tour's standout performances, the March 4, 2022, show at London's O2 Arena marked a significant post-COVID milestone, recognized as the venue's first full-capacity concert following pandemic restrictions, symbolizing a return to live music gatherings.[31] The band's North American leg debut at the inaugural Innings Festival on March 20, 2022, in Tampa, Florida, integrated baseball-themed elements reflective of the event's MLB sponsorship and "innings" motif, with the Lumineers delivering an energetic set amid festival activities like player meet-and-greets.[32][33] Joint performances added unique highlights, such as CAAMP joining the Lumineers onstage for covers of "Ho Hey" during select North American dates, blending the openers' rustic sound with the headliners' signature folk-rock energy. At the August 23, 2022, concert at Orlando's Amway Center, fans received thrown setlists marked in red ink to emphasize tracks from the Brightside album, enhancing the interactive experience for attendees.[26]Tour dates
European leg
The European leg of the Brightside World Tour served as the tour's kickoff, running from February 24 to March 16, 2022, and featuring 11 arena shows across the UK, Ireland, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Norway, and Poland. Originally planned as a larger 22-date run, the itinerary was scaled back due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns, with the band adapting to regional restrictions such as masking requirements and vaccine verification at venues in EU countries like France and Belgium. The leg began in the UK, where high demand led to sold-out performances at major arenas, reflecting the band's strong fanbase in the region following the pandemic hiatus.[13] The tour opened at Nottingham's Motorpoint Arena on February 24, with subsequent UK and Irish dates drawing large crowds at full capacity, as restrictions had been lifted in those areas. Continental stops included intimate arena settings in cities like Madrid and Amsterdam, where attendance was impacted by capacity limits in some locations, though shows proceeded with health protocols in place to ensure safety. Special guests, such as Gregory Alan Isakov, joined for select dates, including the opener in Nottingham and the London show.[34][35][36]| Date | City | Country | Venue | Notes |

North American leg
The North American leg of the Brightside World Tour kicked off on March 20, 2022, with a set at the Innings Festival held at Raymond James Stadium Grounds in Tampa, Florida.[39] This opening performance marked the band's return to live stages following the release of their fourth studio album, Brightside, and set the tone for an extensive run across the continent. The headline portion of the leg commenced shortly after on May 18, 2022, at Daily's Place in Jacksonville, Florida, launching a series of over 45 concerts that spanned the United States and Canada until the tour's close on September 3, 2022, at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois.[40][41][42] The itinerary progressed from spring-focused arena and mid-sized venue dates in the Southeast and Midwest to a robust summer slate of outdoor amphitheater shows, culminating in larger stadium finales during the early fall. Notable stops included dual nights at Budweiser Stage in Toronto, Ontario, on June 11 and 12, and an indoor arena performance at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, on July 29.[43] Venues generally accommodated 10,000 to 20,000 attendees, with the summer segment prioritizing open-air settings like Pine Knob Music Theatre in Clarkston, Michigan, and Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre in Maryland Heights, Missouri, to embrace seasonal weather and enhance the folk-rock atmosphere.[17] Logistical adaptations were evident in the outdoor-heavy schedule, where shows occasionally faced weather-related delays or modifications, such as extended setup times for rain protection at amphitheaters to ensure safety and continuity. Special guests like Caamp appeared at select dates, including several early summer stops and the Chicago finale, adding variety to the album-centric performances.[22][42] This leg represented the tour's largest volume of dates, emphasizing intimate yet expansive energy tailored to North American audiences.Festivals and additional notes
The Brightside World Tour included select festival appearances that complemented the band's headline itinerary. On March 20, 2022, the Lumineers performed at the inaugural Innings Festival Florida at Raymond James Stadium Grounds in Tampa, Florida, sharing the bill with acts such as Green Day and Incubus. Later, on July 9, 2022, they headlined the WonderStruck Music Festival at Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, alongside Vampire Weekend. These festival slots provided opportunities for broader audience engagement beyond traditional concert venues.[44][2] Several dates on the tour incorporated rescheduling from the band's previously postponed III: The World Tour, disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, including the July 26, 2022, show at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri. No major cancellations occurred during the 2022 run, though minor adjustments were made for logistical reasons, such as venue availability. The tour adopted a hybrid format, utilizing both indoor arenas and outdoor amphitheaters to accommodate varying weather and capacity needs, such as the outdoor performance at the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington, on July 16, 2022. Ticket prices ranged from $25 for lawn seating to upwards of $150 for premium options, with presales through the band's BRIGHTSIDE Tour Club proving successful in securing early fan access and contributing to strong overall attendance. The tour's box office performance averaged approximately $554,000 per show, reflecting robust demand.[11][28][22][45]South African leg
The tour concluded with a brief leg in South Africa, featuring two performances in November and December 2022. These shows marked the band's return to the region and served as the international finale for the Brightside World Tour.[3]| Date | City | Country | Venue | Notes |
