Upbringing and family
Dev Joshi was born on November 28, 2000, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, to parents Dushyant Joshi and Devangna Joshi.[2][3] He grew up in a supportive Gujarati family in Ahmedabad, where his parents played a pivotal role in nurturing his early passion for performing arts.[4] His father, a businessman based in Ahmedabad, and his mother provided constant encouragement, often accompanying him on travels between home and Mumbai for initial opportunities.[4][3] Joshi's childhood in Ahmedabad was shaped by the city's vibrant cultural scene, including exposure to traditional Gujarati performances that sparked his interest in acting from a young age.[4] At the age of three, he began participating in theatre and regional Gujarati shows, gaining initial experience through community and stage events that honed his skills.[4] He attended Hiramani Senior Secondary School, where his family helped him balance these early pursuits with academics by coordinating with teachers during frequent absences for auditions and rehearsals.[4] A notable aspect of his upbringing was the unwavering family support during his nascent career steps; his mother, in particular, stayed by his side during shoots, offering guidance on expressions and ensuring he kept up with schoolwork, while his parents encouraged auditions that led to his television debut.[4][3] This foundation in Ahmedabad's environment transitioned into formal education and his entry into professional acting.[4]Academic background
Dev Joshi completed his primary and secondary education at Hiramani Senior Secondary School in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He completed his secondary education (12th standard) in the science stream.[5] During this period, he began his acting career as a child, managing the demands of shoots in Mumbai by spending approximately 20 days per month there and returning to Ahmedabad for the remaining time to attend classes.[4] After school, Joshi enrolled at L.D. Arts College in Ahmedabad to pursue a bachelor's degree in Political Science, a choice driven by his longstanding curiosity about national governance and political dynamics.[6] This academic focus aligned with his developing worldview, fostering an interest in historical and political narratives that paralleled aspects of his professional roles.[6] Throughout his undergraduate studies, Joshi continued to balance academics with his acting commitments on shows like Baalveer, crediting family support—particularly from his mother—for helping him maintain this equilibrium without compromising either pursuit.[7] He has described this multitasking as a core mantra, starting from his school days and extending into higher education.[8] Following his bachelor's degree, Joshi completed a master's degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy from the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) in Switzerland in November 2024, further emphasizing his commitment to political and global studies alongside his career.[9][10]Personal life
Marriage and relationships
Dev Joshi met Aarti Kharel, a Nepali banker, during a road trip in Europe in 2024, where their shared interests in travel and adventure sparked a romantic connection that progressed steadily over the following months.[11] The couple announced their engagement on January 19, 2025, in an intimate ceremony held in Lumbini, Nepal, a site of profound cultural and spiritual significance as the birthplace of Gautama Buddha, reflecting their emphasis on meaningful traditions over extravagance.[11][12] The event, attended by close family and friends, featured traditional Nepali elements and was shared publicly through a heartfelt video posted by Joshi, highlighting their commitment to faith, love, and lifelong partnership.[12] Joshi and Kharel married on February 25, 2025, in a low-key wedding ceremony also in Lumbini, Nepal, surrounded by immediate family and blending Indian and Nepali customs in a private celebration that prioritized emotional intimacy.[13][14] Joshi later described the occasion as finding his "perfect companion," underscoring the couple's compatibility and mutual support.[13] As of November 2025, Joshi and Kharel remain married, occasionally making joint public appearances, such as a March 2025 interview where they discussed their relationship and future plans, while maintaining a focus on privacy amid Joshi's acting commitments.[15][16]Interests and hobbies
Dev Joshi harbors a deep passion for exploration and adventure, frequently documenting his journeys across diverse landscapes in India and his adopted home in Spain. In 2024, he relocated to Madrid, embracing a new phase of life filled with cultural discovery and personal growth, as evidenced by his shared excitement for fresh beginnings and global experiences.[17] This interest extends to his entrepreneurial venture, We Book Memories, co-founded with his wife Aarti Kharel in 2025 as a travel service aimed at creating hassle-free and memorable trips for others.[18] In the realm of philanthropy, Joshi founded the D3 Caring Social Club in 2020, a non-governmental organization focused on providing clothes and food to underprivileged communities in India.[19] Joshi maintains a disciplined fitness routine centered on outdoor activities, including daily cycling to stay active and build endurance, a habit he developed during his early acting days to balance a demanding schedule.[20] He also incorporates morning runs to enhance metabolism and energy levels, emphasizing a holistic approach that prioritizes mental well-being alongside physical health.[21] Beyond fitness, his hobbies encompass swimming, skating, watching movies, and trekking, reflecting a youthful enthusiasm for recreational pursuits.[22] Additionally, Joshi holds a Master's degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy, deepening his understanding of global dynamics.[10] Rooted in his Gujarati upbringing in Ahmedabad, Joshi engages with his cultural heritage through traditional elements like Garba dances during family celebrations, blending them with his international lifestyle. He actively uses social media platforms, particularly Instagram, to share glimpses of his travels, fitness endeavors, and personal reflections, fostering a connection with fans worldwide and highlighting aspects of his adventurous persona.[23]Acting career
Early roles and debut
Dev Joshi began his professional acting journey at the age of three, initially appearing in stage performances, theatre productions, and regional Gujarati shows, which laid the foundation for his early exposure in the entertainment industry.[4] He made his television debut in 2006 at age five with the Hindi fantasy-drama series Lucky on Star Plus, portraying a supporting child role in the show's narrative about a young protector discovering his powers.[24] By his early teens, Joshi had accumulated over 20 credits in Gujarati films—such as Jay Jalaram and Bewafa Pardesi—alongside numerous advertisements, showcasing his versatility in regional cinema.[25][26] Based in Ahmedabad, Joshi navigated significant challenges as a child actor, including the demands of commuting between his hometown school and Mumbai shoots; he spent approximately 20 days a month filming while dedicating the rest to catching up on his syllabus at Hiramani Senior Secondary School, often relying on his mother and classmates for academic support.[4][27] This rigorous schedule proved taxing, particularly with subjects like mathematics, which he described as a "nightmare," requiring creative study techniques amid 10-day shooting stretches.[28] His consistent performances in these early ventures earned him initial recognition within Gujarati regional media, highlighting his talent as a promising young performer and facilitating his shift to prominent national television opportunities.[4]Baalveer franchise
Dev Joshi was cast as the titular character Baalveer in the Indian fantasy television series Baal Veer, which premiered on Sony SAB on October 8, 2012, when he was just 11 years old.[29] The role marked his breakthrough as a child actor, portraying a young superhero orphan who discovers his extraordinary abilities after being transported from Earth to the fairy realm of Pari Lok.[30] In the original series, which ran until 2016, Baalveer possesses powers derived from seven fairies, including super strength, flight, invisibility, and the ability to manipulate elements like water and fire, using them to battle evil forces such as the villainous Bhayankar Pari and protect children from everyday threats.[31] The character's arc evolves from an innocent boy learning his destiny to a confident guardian who emphasizes themes of courage, friendship, and moral values, significantly influencing Indian children's programming by addressing social issues like bullying and child labor through fantastical narratives.[31] This portrayal not only showcased Joshi's versatility in action sequences but also established the franchise as a staple for young viewers, fostering imaginative play and ethical lessons.[32] Joshi reprised his role in the sequel Baalveer Returns (2019–2021), where the storyline shifts to a new generation of heroes while he plays multiple characters, including the senior Baalveer, an ordinary boy named Dev, his younger self Debu, and the masked vigilante Naqabposh, blending legacy mentorship with fresh adventures against interstellar threats.[30] The series received positive fan reception for its innovative multi-role performance by Joshi and expanded mythology, though it concluded abruptly due to production challenges amid the COVID-19 pandemic.[33] In Baalveer 3 (2023), which aired from March 18 to September 9, the plot evolves further with Joshi as a 24-year-old Baalveer stripped of his powers and living incognito as Veer, embarking on a quest to reclaim his identity and combat a new antagonist, Bhasmasur, while training a successor.[34] Fans praised the mature character development and high-stakes action, appreciating how it bridged the franchise's child-centric origins with themes of self-discovery, though the series ended after seven months due to low ratings.[35][36] The franchise continued with Baalveer 4 (2024), streaming on SonyLIV from May 6 to July 23, where Joshi reprised Baalveer in a direct sequel to season 3, facing new threats from dark forces while continuing to mentor young heroes and explore themes of darkness versus light in an epic battle. The season was well-received for its visual effects and Joshi's enduring portrayal, maintaining the show's appeal to family audiences through streaming format.[5] In Baalveer 5 (2025), which premiered on SonyLIV on April 7 and was ongoing as of November 2025, Joshi returned as Baalveer in a storyline centered on an internal conflict where the hero battles aspects of himself, incorporating elements of self-reflection and resilience against personal and external evils. The season has been praised for its innovative narrative focusing on psychological depth alongside fantasy action, with Joshi's performance highlighting his growth as an actor into his mid-20s.[37] The Baalveer franchise has had a profound cultural impact on Indian children's television, inspiring generations through merchandise like board games that encourage problem-solving and real-world initiatives such as school programs promoting environmental awareness.[38][39] Joshi's long association with the role, starting at age 12, allowed him to balance on-set schooling with filming, contributing to his personal growth from child star to seasoned performer while the character remains a role model for bravery and resilience among young audiences worldwide.[40][32] For his performances across the series, Joshi has earned multiple accolades, including Telly and ITA Awards.[41]Other television work
Dev Joshi began his television career with mythological roles during his childhood, portraying Young Shukra in the series Mahima Shani Dev Ki from 2009 to 2010, where he depicted the youthful incarnation of the sage in episodes centered on Shani's divine justice and moral trials.[42] This early work highlighted his ability to embody wise, ethereal characters in a narrative exploring planetary influences and devotion.[43] In 2012, Joshi appeared in a single episode of Devon Ke Dev...Mahadev as Young Markandeya, the legendary child sage known for his devotion to Lord Shiva and his boon of immortality through intense penance.[44] The role required him to convey innocence and spiritual depth amid the show's epic retelling of Mahadev's lore, marking an early foray into grand mythological storytelling.[45] A significant shift came in 2018 with his portrayal of teenage Chandra Shekhar Azad in Chandrashekhar, a biographical drama on Star Bharat that chronicled the life of the iconic Indian revolutionary leader (1906–1931), famed for his fearless resistance against British colonial rule, including daring escapes and leadership in the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association.[46] Following an age leap in the series, Joshi took on the titular elder role, transitioning from a child performer to embodying Azad's fiery patriotism and strategic defiance during key events like the Kakori conspiracy and his vow of never being captured alive.[47] The performance earned praise for its intensity and departure from fantasy genres, with the series itself receiving positive feedback for its authentic depiction of independence-era struggles, including a user rating of 8.1 on IMDb and commendations for strong direction and acting.[48] This role demonstrated Joshi's growing versatility, building on his established popularity from the Baalveer franchise to tackle historical drama. Joshi continued with guest appearances in later years, including a crossover episode in Aladdin - Naam Toh Suna Hoga in 2020, where he reprised elements of his heroic persona in a collaborative storyline involving magical alliances against evil forces.[49] He also featured in the chat-based special Kuch Smiles Ho Jayein With Alia that same year, engaging in light-hearted segments with co-stars to promote ongoing shows.[50] These brief stints in later years reflected his early evolution across genres, paving the way for more mature, multifaceted young adult characters in subsequent projects.[25]Gujarati films
Dev Joshi began his acting career as a child artist in Gujarati cinema, contributing to over 20 films that reflect his early roots in the regional industry. Born in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Joshi's initial roles often involved supporting parts in family-oriented dramas and comedies, marking his entry into the medium around age three. These early appearances helped establish his presence in Gujarati storytelling, which frequently draws from local customs and narratives.[25][51] One notable early project was Maiyar Ma Mandu Nathi Lagtu 2 (2008), a sequel to the 2001 romantic family drama, where Joshi portrayed a child artist in a story centered on the Ram Ratan family's trials of joy and sorrow amid life's twists, ultimately leading to resolution and happiness. The film, directed by Jashwant Gangani, received positive reception for its relatable portrayal of familial bonds, earning a 7.7/10 rating on IMDb based on viewer feedback. Joshi's performance in such roles underscored his budding talent in capturing innocent perspectives within Gujarati cultural contexts.[52] By the 2020s, Joshi transitioned to more mature and prominent roles, showcasing growth from child actor to lead performer in the regional industry. In Purna Purushottam Shree Swaminarayan Bhagwan (2022), a devotional biopic directed by Rakesh Pujara, he took on the central role of Swaminarayan Bhagwan, depicting the life of the 19th-century spiritual leader revered in Gujarati heritage. The film explores themes of faith, devotion, and social reform, highlighting Swaminarayan's influence on Gujarati society. It garnered acclaim for its inspirational narrative, achieving an 8.5/10 IMDb rating from audiences appreciating its cultural depth.[53] Through these contributions, Joshi has played a role in promoting Gujarati culture via cinema, often tying into Ahmedabad's vibrant heritage as a hub of regional filmmaking and traditions. His body of work emphasizes authentic representations of Gujarati values, family dynamics, and spiritual elements, bridging his personal background with broader cultural narratives.[25][51]Other pursuits
Aviation training
Dev Joshi has harbored a lifelong aspiration to become a pilot, a dream he publicly shared in 2024 as he sought to balance it with his established acting career. Having completed his 12th standard in the Science stream, he emphasized the importance of pursuing passions without delay, stating that "we only get one shot at this life." This ambition aligns with his broader curiosity for knowledge and adventure, extending beyond the entertainment industry. In mid-2024, Joshi enrolled in pilot training in Spain, marking the beginning of his structured aviation education. His motivations are deeply personal, inspired in part by the flying abilities of his iconic character Baalveer, a superhero he has portrayed since childhood, which fueled his fascination with aerial experiences. Training in Europe allowed him to immerse himself in the practical aspects of aviation while continuing to develop skills essential for professional piloting. By August 2024, Joshi achieved a significant milestone with his first solo flight, demonstrating rapid progress in his program aimed at obtaining an EASA Private Pilot Licence. In early 2025, he obtained his EASA Private Pilot License.[54] As of November 2025, Joshi holds the license and aspires to qualify as a commercial pilot. This pursuit underscores his determination to diversify his professional life, potentially enabling future roles in aviation alongside acting.Spaceflight project
In December 2022, Dev Joshi was selected as a crew member for the dearMoon project, a private lunar tourism mission funded by Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa.[55] At 22 years old, Joshi became the youngest participant and the first Indian to join the endeavor, chosen from over one million global applicants after submitting an application in 2021 and undergoing physical tests and interviews.[56][55] The dearMoon mission aimed to conduct the first all-civilian circumlunar flyby using SpaceX's Starship spacecraft, orbiting the Moon without landing for approximately one week.[57] Maezawa assembled an artistic crew of eight, including musicians, filmmakers, and athletes, to inspire global creativity through space exploration.[57] Joshi, known for his role in the children's television series Baalveer, planned to document the journey via filming and promote space awareness among India's youth, leveraging his influence to spread messages of positivity and passion.[58][55] The project was canceled on June 1, 2024, due to prolonged delays in Starship's development and an uncertain timeline, compounded by funding considerations.[59][60] Joshi expressed deep disappointment, describing the announcement as heartbreaking and noting it as a long-held dream, though he indicated openness to revisiting space travel once Starship becomes operational.[61] The selection briefly positioned Joshi as a pioneering explorer bridging entertainment and space, enhancing his public persona beyond acting; post-cancellation, he has continued to voice enthusiasm for future space-related pursuits, aligning with his broader aviation interests.[62][61]Filmography and media
