Family background
Kwon Nara, born Kwon Nara on March 13, 1991, in Incheon, South Korea, hails from a close-knit family as the eldest of three daughters.[1] Her two younger sisters, Hara and Bora, share a strong sibling bond with her, occasionally appearing together in public or on social platforms, though they maintain low profiles outside her spotlight.[13] Her parents have played a supportive role in her life and career decisions. Following a serious car accident, her parents advised changing her legal name from Kwon Nara to Kwon Ah-yoon in 2017, viewing the original name as potentially unlucky.[14] This decision reflected their protective influence during a challenging period in her early career with the girl group Hello Venus.[15] While details about her parents' professions remain private, Kwon Nara has described her father as warm and caring, often citing him as her ideal type of partner.[16]Education and early interests
Kwon Nara developed an early interest in the entertainment industry during her childhood. As a young girl, she aspired to become a flight attendant, but her ambitions shifted toward acting and singing as she grew older, reflecting a growing fascination with performance arts.[6] She moved to Bundang, Gyeonggi-do at age 7 and began learning judo in elementary school, earning a second-degree black belt by middle school.[17] In middle school, Nara's potential caught the attention of industry scouts when she was street-cast due to her striking height of 172 cm and proportional figure, leading to her recruitment as an acting trainee under Fantagio Entertainment. This opportunity marked the beginning of her formal entry into the entertainment world, where she began honing her skills in acting while also learning singing and dancing to broaden her prospects in broadcasting. Despite her initial focus on acting, she ultimately debuted as a member of the girl group Hello Venus in 2012, channeling her early passions into a multifaceted career.[18][6] For her formal education, Nara attended Bundang Daejin High School, completing her secondary studies there. She later pursued higher education at Dongduk Women's University, earning a bachelor's degree in Broadcasting Entertainment, which aligned closely with her professional aspirations in media and performance.[2]Career
Pre-debut acting and training
Kwon Nara entered the entertainment industry at a young age, making her acting debut in 2006 with a minor cameo role as a high school girl in the comedy film Birthday Teacher (also known as Mr. Wacky), directed by Kim Dong-wook. At just 15 years old, this early appearance marked her initial foray into acting, though it was a small bit part without significant screen time or dialogue.[19] During her middle school years, around 2004–2006, Kwon was scouted by Fantagio Entertainment and began training as an actress under the agency. This period focused on developing her acting skills, aligning with her growing interest in performance arts. Fantagio, known for managing actors and idols, provided structured training that included acting workshops and possibly vocal coaching, given her later dual career path. She has mentioned in interviews that her passion for acting led her to pursue formal studies in the field before shifting toward music.[20][21] Prior to her official debut as a member of the girl group Hello Venus on May 9, 2012, Kwon continued her acting endeavors with brief cameo appearances in television dramas. Notably, she featured in a minor role in the SBS family drama Take Care of Us, Captain, which aired from January to February 2012, allowing her to gain on-set experience while completing her trainee period. These early opportunities, though limited, helped build her foundation in acting amid her transition to idol activities under Fantagio's collaboration with Pledis Entertainment.[22]Music career with Hello Venus
Kwon Nara debuted as a member of the South Korean girl group Hello Venus on May 9, 2012, under Tricell Media, a joint venture between Pledis Entertainment and Fantagio, with the release of their first mini-album Venus.[23][24] In the six-member lineup, she served as the visual and sub-vocalist, contributing to the group's vocal harmonies and stage presence alongside leader Alice, main vocalist Lime, lead vocalists Yoo Ara and Seungyeon, and maknae Yooyoung.[25] The lead single "Venus" marked their entry into the K-pop scene, earning quick recognition for its retro-inspired sound and choreography, with the group performing on major music shows shortly after release.[26] Following their debut, Hello Venus built momentum with a series of releases that showcased evolving concepts from innocent charm to more mature themes. In July 2012, they issued the repackaged mini-album Like a Wave, featuring the title track of the same name, which highlighted their dance-pop style.[27] Their second mini-album, What Are You Doing Today?, arrived in December 2012, promoting the upbeat single "What Are You Doing Today?" and solidifying their presence with fan events, including their first fan meeting in February 2013.[28] Nara remained a core member through lineup changes, including Alice's departure in July 2014, followed by the addition of Seoyoung and Yeoreum in December 2014, contributing vocals to key tracks like the 2013 mini-album Would You Stay for Tea? and the group's first full-length album A Far Cry in 2015.[4] The group's mid-2010s era brought greater visibility with bolder concepts, exemplified by the 2015 single "Wiggle Wiggle," a dance track that peaked at number 66 on the Gaon Digital Chart and became one of their signature hits for its confident energy and viral choreography.[29] This was followed by the mini-album I'm Ill that year, featuring the title track "I'm Ill," and subsequent releases like the 2016 single "Paradise" and the 2017 mini-album Mystery of Venus with "Mysterious," where Nara's visual appeal and vocal support helped maintain the group's sexy, empowering image.[30] Throughout these promotions, she balanced music activities with early acting pursuits, appearing in cameos that foreshadowed her career shift. Hello Venus's activities wound down in the late 2010s amid individual endeavors, culminating in the expiration of the members' contracts on April 26, 2019, leading to the group's disbandment.[24] Nara penned a heartfelt letter to fans expressing gratitude for their seven years together and announcing her departure from Fantagio to focus on acting, marking the end of her music career with the group.[31]Acting debut and breakthrough
Kwon Nara began dipping her toes into acting while actively promoting with the girl group Hello Venus, making several cameo appearances in television dramas between 2012 and 2016. These early roles included a brief stint as a stewardess in Take Care of Us, Captain (2012) and supporting parts in series like I Need Romance 3 (2014) and Cunning Single Lady (2014), allowing her to gain initial on-screen experience amid her music career.[6][32] Her official acting debut came in 2017 with the SBS romantic comedy-thriller Suspicious Partner, where she portrayed Cha Yoo-jung, a sharp prosecutor and the childhood friend of lead character Noh Ji-wook (played by Ji Chang-wook), who becomes entangled in a love triangle. The series, which blended legal drama, romance, and suspense, achieved high ratings and critical acclaim, airing from May to July 2017 and drawing widespread attention for its engaging plot twists.[22][9] This role marked Nara's breakthrough, earning her praise for her poised performance and emotional depth, particularly in scenes exploring betrayal and unrequited love. Her portrayal helped solidify her transition from idol to actress, culminating in a nomination for Best New Actress at the 2017 SBS Drama Awards, which highlighted her potential in the industry.[32][33]Rise to prominence and lead roles
Kwon Nara's ascent to lead status came in 2019 with the lead role of Han So-geum, a cunning psychiatrist entangled in a web of medical conspiracies, in the KBS2 thriller Doctor Prisoner, opposite Namgoong Min.[34] The series' intense narrative and her portrayal of a morally ambiguous figure drew critical acclaim, culminating in a Best New Actress win at the 2019 KBS Drama Awards and solidifying her reputation for embodying strong, multifaceted women.[7] Kwon Nara's prominence further escalated in 2020 through her supporting yet pivotal role as Oh Soo-ah, the ambitious executive secretary in the JTBC hit Itaewon Class, a drama that highlighted themes of social justice and revenge, boosting her visibility with its global success on platforms like Netflix.[35] Building on this, she took on lead roles such as Yeo Sa-ryeon, a female secret royal inspector, in the 2021 KBS historical action drama Royal Secret Agent, and dual leads as Min Sang-un/Kim Hwa-yeon in the 2021–2022 tvN fantasy epic Bulgasal: Immortal Souls, depicting a reincarnated immortal across centuries, which allowed her to explore emotional depth and action-oriented sequences alongside Lee Jin-wook.[36] These projects underscored her growing influence in securing diverse, high-profile roles that emphasized resilience and complexity.[37]Recent endeavors and agency changes
In 2024, Kwon Nara starred as Han Bom, a determined lawyer assisting ghosts in the supernatural romantic comedy drama The Midnight Studio, which aired on ENA from March to April and featured co-stars Joo Won and Yoo In Soo.[38] The series highlighted her ability to portray idealistic yet resilient characters, earning praise for her chemistry with the ensemble cast. Later that year, in July 2024, she was cast in the upcoming Disney+ black comedy drama Knock-Off as Moon Yoo-bin, a designer involved in creating high-end counterfeit luxury bags alongside her sister.[39][40] The project, led by Kim Soo-hyun and Jo Bo-ah, marks her entry into a crime-thriller genre, with production ongoing into 2025 but no confirmed premiere date as of November 2025.[41] Regarding agency transitions, Kwon Nara's contract with C-JeS Entertainment ended in April 2023 after less than a year, following her signing in June 2022.[42] She then joined Ghost Studio in June 2023 to focus on acting endeavors.[42] In June 2025, she signed an exclusive contract with Sublime, an agency representing prominent actors such as Song Kang-ho and Hyeri, signaling a new phase in her career with emphasis on diverse projects.[43][11] Sublime highlighted her unique aura and solid acting skills in the announcement.[44]Filmography
Films
Kwon Nara made her acting debut in film at the age of 15 with a minor cameo role in the 2006 comedy Mr. Wacky, where she portrayed a high school girl.[2][42] The film, directed by Lee Byung-chun, follows a spoiled playboy who takes a job as a high school teacher to inherit his grandfather's fortune, blending humor with themes of personal growth.[45] Her next and more prominent film role came over a decade later in the 2018 teen romance Fantasy of the Girls (also known as A Girl's World or Sonyeoui Segye), directed by Ahn Jung-min, where she played the lead character Lee Ha-nam, a charismatic senior student cast as Romeo in an all-girls high school's production of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.[7][46] The movie explores themes of first love, identity, and subtle queer undertones through the story of freshman Sun-hwa (Roh Jeong-eui), who is unexpectedly cast as Juliet and develops feelings for Ha-nam during rehearsals.[47] Released theatrically on November 29, 2018, after premiering at festivals in 2016, the film received praise for its fresh take on high school romance and Nara's androgynous, captivating performance as the school's admired figure.[48][49] As of 2025, these remain her only feature film credits, with her career primarily focused on television dramas.[7][2]| Year | Title | Role | Notes |
