Key Information
History
[edit]Arzi and Sadovnik met and began writing songs together when they were 14. Three years later, they formed Red Cotton, a four-member psychedelic rock band that included Udi Naor and Yovav, Arzi's brother.
The year after releasing their debut album, 2006's memory card, the band made plans to go to London but only managed to reach Amsterdam. After four months the Red Cotton band broke up, with Arzi and Sadovnik electing to remain in Amsterdam, and tour Europe, broadening their musical experience and repertoire. After spending some time living in Amsterdam and touring Europe, the two Dj/Producers with Naor as the head producer started a rave party brand in Tel Aviv called "Break It!". The first Red Axes EP was released in 2010. During the following years, Red Axes went on to release on a variety of labels including Crosstown Rebels, Hivern Discs, Permanent Vacation, Correspondent, Life and Death, Dark Entries, Multi Culti, and I'm a Cliche.
Red Axes' first full-length album, Ballad of the Ice, appeared under the I'm a Cliché label[1] in 2014.[2] The vocal- and guitar-heavy album included additional collaborations with Abrão as well as a cover of Bauhaus '"Bela Lugosi's Dead." Following the release of the Ballad of Ice" album, the duo initiated a worldwide tour, gaining international recognition both on the dance floors and in the music charts worldwide.
In 2016, the duo launched their own record label named Garzen Records,[3] releasing records such as: The White Screen, Abrao, Deaf Chonky, The Crotches, Siam and their own latest album "The Beach Goths".[4] Beach Goths was produced in their studio in collaboration with the extended Garzen family – Abrão, Eylonzo Crotch, Gabriel Broid, Adi Bronicki, Thomas Jacksonn & Iñigo Vontier were all featured in the 12 track album with the stated intention of creating a "new psychedelic cosmic adventure" for fans.[5] The result has been described as "innovative in the simplicity with which it talks to the soul of the listener as well as in the assortment of music references that every single track contains. The Beach Goths consists of 12 tracks that can be viewed as paths; none of them is restricted to a specific interpretation though, what is clearly defined is the element that brings them together – an invitation to approach music in the most natural way, in the awareness that every listening experience conceals a purely and exclusively subjective interpretation."[6]
Over 2016, they went on to produce "Kill The DJ", characterized by dark, new wave flavors, and had two releases on Multi Culti (including remixes of 'Waiting for a Surprise'). They issued three collaborations with Moscoman: ‘Dikembe Manutu’, a more Middle Eastern-flavored ‘Subaru Pesha’ and a remix of ‘Fernandez’, characterized by its unexpected tangents and a trippy EP for Endless Flight. It was their ‘Sun My Sweet Sun’ that "perhaps drew most attention with its bells, chimes and simple but highly memorable flute melody".[7]
In 2016 they established their own festival, called: "Garzen Festival"[3] and curated party nights around the world. Red Axes have various performing acts either as Dj's, live electronic duo, or as a Live band called "Red Axes 4".[3]
International appearance venuses of Red Axes have included: Sonar, Burning Man, Coachella, Berghain/Panorama Bar,[3] Glastonbury, Dekmantel, DGTL, Field Day, Pacha Ibiza, Fusion, Nachtdigital, FYF, Convenanza, ADE, Beats in space and Houghton.
In 2016, the duo initiated the "Red Axes around the world" project in Africa, in which they travel to remote locations, performing recordings and workshops with local musicians and students. These activities are being compiled into a serial documentary, the first episode having been filmed in Ethiopia and the Ivory Coast.

Origins
Red Axes was formed in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 2010 by Dori Sadovnik and Niv Arzi as an electronic and indie music project.[1][6] The duo's origins trace back to their earlier collaboration in the post-punk band Red Cotton, which they co-founded in the mid-2000s alongside other members, including Arzi's brother on guitar.[7][8] During this period, Red Cotton toured extensively across Europe, an experience that exposed Sadovnik and Arzi to diverse musical scenes. The tour ended in Amsterdam, where the pair spent four months immersing themselves in the local club culture—particularly at venues like Club 11—sparking their interest in electronic sounds and prompting a shift away from rock towards dance-oriented production.[9][10][5] After their return to Tel Aviv from Amsterdam around 2006–2007, Sadovnik and Arzi launched the "Break It!" party series, an underground event focused on psychedelic electronic music that infused fresh energy into the local scene and served as a testing ground for their emerging production ideas.[6][1][11] This initiative directly preceded the official formation of Red Axes the following year, bridging their rock roots with their new electronic direction.[5]Members
Red Axes is the electronic music project of Tel Aviv-based duo Dori Sadovnik and Niv Arzi, both of whom serve as producers and DJs.[6] Dori Sadovnik, a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and DJ, grew up in Tel Aviv immersed in rock and indie music scenes during his teenage years. He played guitar in the psychedelic rock band Red Cotton, which he co-founded, and is known for his guitar and synthesizer work within Red Axes.[5][7] Niv Arzi, also a producer and DJ with expertise in electronic music production, hails from Tel Aviv and developed an early passion for rock and indie sounds before delving into dance music. He contributes significantly to mixing and live DJ sets for Red Axes, drawing from his background as a crate digger attuned to electronic music history.[7][6] Sadovnik and Arzi have maintained a long-standing collaboration since their teenage years in the mid-2000s, initially as members of the post-punk and new wave band Red Cotton, which evolved into the formation of Red Axes.[5][7]Musical Style and Influences
Style
Red Axes' music is characterized by an eclectic blend of electronic and indie elements, seamlessly integrating genres such as disco, house, garage rock, post-punk, psychedelic rock, and techno. This genre-blending approach creates a distinctive sound that defies conventional categorization, often featuring dusty, twangy electric guitar riffs alongside disco-inspired drum-machine rhythms and industrial percussion. Their productions emphasize a rock 'n' roll foundation infused with electronica, resulting in tracks that range from dubby left-field house workouts to brooding, spacey techno with a sinister sense of humor.[1][12][7] Central to their style are hypnotic rhythms and captivating basslines that drive the listener through psychedelic terrains. These elements include less rigid, gnarly grooves derived from classic house and techno beats, often layered with unsettling echoes and spiky textures that add an earthy, psychedelic quality. The duo's fusion of cultural influences, such as Tel Aviv's indie and punk scenes with global club sounds from Amsterdam and Manchester, incorporates Middle Eastern undertones and African rhythms, evoking a timeless, risk-taking ethos that appeals to diverse dancefloors.[13][7][12] Over time, Red Axes' sound has evolved from psychedelic rock roots—stemming from their origins in a post-punk band—to a more dance-oriented electronic production. This progression reflects a shift from rockist, songwriting-focused structures with simple chords to balanced hybrids of rehearsal-room experimentation and club-ready beats, incorporating darker new wave flavors and progressive house elements. Their style draws briefly from post-punk and new wave influences, enhancing the quirky, alternative edge without adhering strictly to those forms.[7][13][12]Influences
Red Axes' musical influences draw heavily from post-punk and new wave, genres that shaped their early sound during their time in the band Red Cotton, where they explored brooding, angular structures and experimental edges.[1][14] Their foundational inspirations also include punk, garage rock, and psychedelic rock, reflecting the raw energy and improvisational spirit they encountered as teenagers immersed in Tel Aviv's underground scene.[15][16] In parallel, the duo absorbed influences from both old and new club sounds, blending disco's groovy propulsion with contemporary house, techno, industrial, and EBM elements to create hypnotic, rhythm-driven tracks.[7][2] These electronic roots were amplified by exposures to European rave culture, particularly during trips to Amsterdam around 2007, where they encountered vibrant, genre-blending parties featuring Daft Punk-inspired hype and colorful techno-indie fusions.[7] Culturally, Tel Aviv's dynamic nightlife and electronic music community served as the duo's primary incubator, fostering a sense of freedom and experimentation amid small clubs and bars that hosted eclectic performances.[2][13] This local vibrancy intersected with global scenes, incorporating eclectic fusions of African motifs—drawn from their 2017 travels and recordings in Ethiopia and Ivory Coast—[17]and subtle Middle Eastern flavors inherent to the Israeli context.[18][12] These diverse influences propelled Red Axes toward a singular path in electronic music, prioritizing personal expression and genre defiance over mainstream trends, resulting in a distinctive blend that resists easy categorization.[7][19]Career
Early Career
Red Axes began releasing electronic music in 2009-2010 with early EPs, including the 2011 Bela EP on the German label Klasse Recordings, which featured the titular track alongside "The Tower" and its remixes, establishing their initial sound rooted in house and tech house elements.[20] This EP marked a key point in their transition from prior post-punk endeavors to production and DJing as a duo, following their return to Tel Aviv after time in Amsterdam.[6] Throughout the early 2010s, Red Axes built momentum within Tel Aviv's vibrant underground party scene by organizing the "Break It!" series starting in 2009, which infused the local nightlife with psychedelic electronic sounds and drew crowds to venues like abandoned factories on the city's east side.[6][13] Their DJ sets and events at spots such as The Block and Breakfast Club helped cultivate a community blending post-punk influences with dance music, fostering grassroots growth amid the city's evolving club culture.[13] By the mid-2010s, Red Axes gained initial international exposure through European label connections, culminating in key releases like the 2016 Sun My Sweet Sun EP on Permanent Vacation, which included tracks such as "Way to Neptune" and became a notable anthem in club circuits.[21][13] That same year, they collaborated with Moscoman and Krikor on the Subaru Pesha single for Disco Halal, featuring an instrumental version and a Roman Flügel remix, further bridging their Tel Aviv roots with continental audiences via performances in Europe starting around 2012.[22][6]Label and Major Releases
In 2016, Red Axes founded Garzen Records as an independent label based in Tel Aviv, Israel, to serve as a platform for their own productions and collaborations with like-minded artists, emphasizing artistic freedom and eclectic electronic sounds.[23][24] Prior to establishing Garzen, the duo released their debut album Ballad of the Ice in 2014 on the I'm a Cliché label, marking a transitional phase that blended post-punk influences with emerging electronic elements and set the stage for their label's focus on experimental dance music.[25] The Beach Goths, their sophomore album issued on Garzen Records in 2017, explored beach goth aesthetics through a fusion of psychedelia, industrial grit, and dreamy Mediterranean shore vibes, evoking escapism in tracks that weave balearic, disco, and new wave motifs.[26][27] In 2020, they released their self-titled third album on Dark Entries Records, incorporating jagged guitars, spacy arpeggios, and hypnotic vocals that continued their punk-infused electronic evolution.[3] In 2023, Red Axes shifted to Fabric Originals for their fourth studio album One More City, delving into urban explorations via narratives of transient city life and fame-chasing, as heard in songs like "Kid Caffeine," while incorporating funk, techno, and post-punk grooves with guest contributions from artists such as Clams and Autarkic.[28]Tours and Projects
Red Axes initiated their "Trips" series in 2018 as a multimedia project to explore global musical traditions through travel, recording collaborations with indigenous artists, and cultural workshops, beginning with excursions to Africa in 2017. The inaugural installment, Trips #1: In Africa, documented their journeys to Ethiopia and the Ivory Coast, where they recorded with local musicians such as the seven-piece Ivorian band Yakomin and students from the Insaac Music School in Abidjan. This EP, released on !K7 Music, features tracks like "Abidjan" incorporating Yakomin's rhythms, "Addis" blending Ethiopian wind and string instruments with electronic elements, and "Musica Electronique" created during youth workshops. Accompanying the release was a documentary short highlighting these exchanges, emphasizing the duo's aim to foster cross-cultural dialogues by integrating traditional sounds into their psychedelic electronic framework.[17] Following the release of their 2017 album The Beach Goths on Garzen Records, Red Axes embarked on extensive international tours to promote the record, performing across Europe, North America, and Asia. These circuits included high-profile appearances that showcased the album's fusion of italo-disco, techno, and rock influences in live settings, with the duo expanding their reach to new markets such as a three-city tour of India in February 2018, spanning New Delhi, Bangalore, and Mumbai. This solidified their presence on the global electronic music scene and allowed them to connect with diverse audiences through extended DJ sets and live instrumentation.[29] Building on the energetic, underground ethos of their Tel Aviv-based "Break It!" party series, which they launched in 2009 to infuse the local scene with psychedelic electronic vibes, Red Axes translated these concepts into international events during their tours. This expansion manifested in immersive, all-night performances that echoed the non-conformist spirit of "Break It!", featuring original material and improvisational elements to create communal experiences abroad. In celebration of their tenth anniversary in 2020, they announced an "All-Night, 100% Originals" tour comprising February gigs across Europe, where they committed to playing exclusively their own productions, further evolving the party format into a global touring staple.[30][31]Discography
Albums
Red Axes' debut studio album, Ballad of the Ice, released in 2014 on the I'm A Cliché label, features 10 tracks that blend electronic production with rock elements, incorporating post-punk and new wave influences alongside dub and disco foundations.[25] The album integrates house rhythms with guitar licks and weathered drum kits, evident in tracks like the choppy rockabilly of "Watkins" and fragile synth-driven fairground lullabies, culminating in a cover of Bauhaus' "Telegram Sam."[5] Produced by the duo Dori Sadovnik and Niv Arzi, it represented a pivotal shift in their sound, emphasizing simplicity and strong songwriting inspired by acts like Solid Space.[5] Critics hailed it as a watershed release for its fresh ideas and innovative fusion, with label head Cosmo Vitelli noting the duo's adept handling of dance music conventions alongside creative experimentation.[5] The duo's sophomore effort, The Beach Goths, arrived in 2017 as a self-release on their Garzen Records imprint, comprising 12 tracks that juxtapose goth aesthetics with beachy, free-form abandon to create eclectic party music rooted in late '70s and early '80s post-punk.[26] Production highlights wiggly, kaleidoscopic arrangements, including collaborations with artists like Abrão and Eylonzo Crotch, as heard in the snaky fuzzbox bass and blues guitar of "Ride The Sus" or the revved-up psychobilly drums in "Tarzan Blues."[32] The album draws from psychedelic punk, hard rock, and mystical electronica, using unconventional recording techniques to bridge acoustic and electronic realms with progressive flair.[33] Reception emphasized its fun, dancefloor-friendly energy and unique twists on familiar '80s sounds, positioning it as an ideal blend of gig and club vibes across decades.[32][34] In 2020, Red Axes released their self-titled third studio album on [Dark Entries](/page/Dark Entries) Records, an 11-track LP marking their 10-year anniversary with jagged guitars, spacy arpeggios, and hypnotic vocals that fuse their post-punk roots with electronic experimentation.[35] Tracks like "Brotherhood (Of The Misunderstood)" featuring Autarkic and "Watching You" highlight their shape-shifting style, earning praise for bridging underground indie and club music. In 2023, Red Axes issued their fourth studio album, One More City, through Fabric Originals, a 12-track collection produced at their Axes Studios in Tel Aviv and mastered at Metropolis Studios in London.[28] The record reflects the urban pulse of Tel Aviv, critiquing the local club scene's post-Covid commercialization while narrating tales of fame-chasing wanderers across cities, infused with post-punk, techno, disco, and a glammy edge.[28] Key collaborations include Clams (of Warmduscher) on the thumping opener "Kid Caffeine," Fantastic Twins on the high-energy "High Speed," and Cole Alexander on "Bring It On," showcasing the duo's reconnection to instrumental jamming and Tel Aviv roots.[37][28] Early previews lauded its originality and genre-defying hedonism, merging analogue-feeling electronics with cathartic vocals to evade conventional club norms.[37][38] As of November 19, 2025, Red Axes have announced their fifth studio album, LOUD, scheduled for release on November 21, 2025, via their Bandcamp page, featuring tracks like "Girl" and "We Do For Love" that emphasize their gritty, shape-shifting electronic edge.[4]Singles and EPs
Red Axes' debut release, the Bela EP, arrived in 2011 on Klasse Recordings, featuring the titular track alongside "The Tower" and its remixes, establishing their early sound rooted in house and tech house elements.[20] This EP served as an introduction to the duo's production style, blending groovy basslines with atmospheric textures, and helped garner initial attention in underground electronic circles. Their follow-up, the Tour de Chile EP, was released in 2012 on I'm A Cliché, comprising 5 tracks that showcased their emerging eclectic style influenced by global rhythms and electronic experimentation.[39] In 2013, the single "Caminho de Dreyfus" featuring Abrão on Correspondant marked their breakthrough, with its psychedelic disco grooves and remixes contributing to their rising international profile.[40] In 2016, the Sun My Sweet Sun EP on Permanent Vacation showcased a more experimental edge, with the title track's extended 8:47 runtime exploring indie dance rhythms at 120 BPM, accompanied by "Way to Neptune" and "Cockroach."[41] The release highlighted their growing versatility, incorporating psychedelic influences that foreshadowed later full-length works. That same year, "Subaru Pesha," a collaboration with Moscoman and Krikor on Disco Halal, emerged as a standout single, featuring disco-house grooves and remixes by Roman Flügel, contributing to their rising profile in international club scenes.[40] Subsequent EPs further propelled their career, such as the 2017 Kalacol EP on Life and Death, which included tracks like "Kalacol" and "Vego Gam," emphasizing deep, hypnotic techno that built anticipation for their album The Beach Goths.[42] On Phantasy Sound, the 2018 Sipoor EP and Some Lights EP captured critical acclaim for their fusion of post-punk and electronic elements, with "Sipoor" receiving heavy DJ support and marking a pivotal shift toward darker, narrative-driven sounds.[43] The 2019 Sound Test EP continued this momentum, offering concise club tools like the title track, reinforcing their reputation for innovative remixes and originals.[44] That year, the Trips #2: Vietnam EP on !K7 Music explored African and Vietnamese rhythmic fusions across 4 tracks, including "Ho Chi Min," expanding their global collaborative approach.[45] Leading into the One More City era, the 2022 single "Flawless" featuring ECHO on Shall Not Fade delivered a club mix with pulsating synths, acting as a bridge to their evolving goth-infused style. In 2023, the pre-release single "Kid Caffeine" featuring Clams from the forthcoming album introduced thumping, luxuriant beats, generating hype through its fusion of new wave and techno.[37] Also in 2023, the Mumia EP, a collaboration with Polo & Pan on Permanent Vacation, featured 4 tracks blending nu-disco and electronica, including remixes that highlighted their experimental edge.[46] These standalone releases collectively advanced Red Axes' trajectory, from underground debuts to high-impact club anthems that expanded their global fanbase.Live Performances
Notable Festivals and Venues
Red Axes have made significant milestone appearances at prominent international festivals and venues, showcasing their distinctive live electronic sets that blend post-punk energy, psychedelic elements, and dancefloor grooves through a combination of synthesizers, guitars, and percussion. These performances, often featuring the duo in a full live band format, have highlighted their evolution from Tel Aviv underground scenes to global stages from 2016 to 2025.[12] In 2016, Red Axes launched their own event, the Garzen Festival in Tel Aviv, which they curated to emphasize experimental electronic and indie sounds reflective of their local scene. The festival's soundtrack compilation included multiple tracks by the duo, such as "What Is in Your Head" and "Only with Your Two Hands" featuring Ryskinder, underscoring their curatorial and performative roles in fostering a platform for like-minded artists. This inaugural edition marked a pivotal moment in their career, allowing them to headline and shape an event that drew on their raw, genre-defying aesthetic.[24] Their debut at Sónar Festival in Barcelona in June 2016 exemplified their kinetic live prowess, with a set featuring vocalist Abrão that integrated intense electronic rhythms and live instrumentation, earning acclaim for feeling "totally in our element" amid the festival's innovative atmosphere. Returning in 2019, they expanded this format by incorporating a third musician on electronic drums, delivering a performance full of light, emotion, and dancefloor momentum at SónarVillage, further solidifying their reputation for immersive, personality-driven shows. These appearances at the renowned Spanish event highlighted how Red Axes' sets transcend traditional DJ formats, emphasizing their punk-infused electronic live energy.[12][47][48] At Glastonbury Festival in the UK in June 2016, Red Axes performed a one-hour live set on the Silver Hayes stage from 19:00 to 20:00, debuting their sound to the festival's diverse audience and showcasing brooding, left-field house tracks that bridged indie rock influences with electronic propulsion. This slot on one of the world's largest festivals demonstrated their ability to command large crowds with detailed, high-energy performances rooted in their Tel Aviv origins.[49] Red Axes' appearance at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in the USA on April 21, 2017, featured a live set in the Yuma Tent, where their eclectic mix of dubby house and industrial-tinged electronics captivated attendees during the daytime slot, marking a key North American breakthrough. The performance underscored their genre-bending style, blending raw hooks and psychedelic vibes in a festival setting known for its broad appeal.[50][51][52] As regulars at Berghain in Berlin, Germany, Red Axes delivered a notable DJ set at Panorama Bar on August 30, 2019, as part of the Finest Correspondant event, where their brooding cuts and new wave influences resonated in the venue's intimate, underground environment. This appearance, among others in the 2016-2025 period, exemplified how their sets at the iconic club venue amplify their non-conformist electronic sound, often shifting between live and DJ formats to maintain a fresh, intense connection with club-goers.[53] In more recent years, Red Axes performed at Houghton Festival in the UK in 2023 and 2024, delivering live sets on the Outburst stage that showcased their evolving rock-infused electronic sound to enthusiastic crowds. They also appeared at Festiwal Tauron Nowa Muzyka in Kraków, Poland, in 2024, continuing their tradition of high-energy festival shows.[54][55][56]Collaborative Performances
Red Axes have frequently incorporated live collaborations to enrich their performances, blending their electronic sound with diverse influences from guest artists. A primary collaborator is Brazilian musician Abrão, whose soulful vocals and percussion have been integrated into their sets, adding organic layers to their post-punk-infused electronic style. Similarly, they have teamed up with Romanian producer Moscoman for joint DJ sets that fuse cosmic disco and acid house elements, creating dynamic, improvisational experiences that push beyond their solo productions.[12][57][58] Their live formats vary to accommodate these partnerships, ranging from straightforward DJ duo performances where they manipulate vinyl and digital elements in tandem with guests, to full electronic live sets featuring modular synths and drum machines. In more expansive configurations, they perform as the "Red Axes 4," an augmented band that includes additional instrumentalists like guitarists or vocalists, allowing for real-time jamming and a rock-oriented edge that amplifies the collaborative energy. This flexibility has enabled them to adapt their sound onstage, incorporating live instrumentation to evoke a raw, communal vibe distinct from pre-recorded tracks.[59][60] Notable collaborative events include their 2016 appearance at Sónar Festival in Barcelona, where Abrão joined them for a live set that highlighted rhythmic interplay and vocal improvisations, drawing crowds with its fusion of Brazilian rhythms and Israeli electronica. They also shared a memorable back-to-back DJ session with Moscoman at Boiler Room's Tuscany event that same year, showcasing seamless transitions between their respective styles in an intimate outdoor setting. In 2017, Red Axes launched their "around the world" initiative in Africa, conducting workshops and recordings with local musicians in Ethiopia and Ivory Coast; these sessions evolved into live performances and tours featuring artists like Yakomin and Insaac Students, incorporating traditional instruments such as the krar and balafon to create hybrid electronic-African soundscapes during subsequent festival appearances.[57][61][58][62][63]Awards and Recognition
Awards
As of 2025, no major awards for Red Axes are documented, despite their continued output and influence in the global electronic scene.Rankings
In 2016, Red Axes achieved notable recognition in Resident Advisor's annual polls, ranking No. 35 in the Top 40 live acts of the year for their dynamic performances blending electronic elements with live instrumentation.[64] Their track "Sun My Sweet Sun," released on Permanent Vacation, placed No. 26 in the Top 50 Tracks poll, praised for its percussive, summery vibe that drove dance floor energy.[65] These placements highlighted the duo's growing influence in the electronic music scene, particularly for their ability to fuse house, post-punk, and psychedelia in live settings. Post-2016, Red Axes continued to garner attention in electronic music circles, though specific poll rankings were less prominent. Their releases, such as the 2023 album One More City on fabric Originals, contributed to the label's recognition as Best Breakthrough Label at the DJ Mag Best of British Awards, underscoring their role in innovative underground sounds.[66] However, no major annual polls like Resident Advisor's replicated the 2016 accolades in subsequent years. These rankings affirmed Red Axes' status as a staple in global club and festival circuits, leading to bookings at events like Love International in Croatia and expanding their reach through releases on labels such as Crosstown Rebels.[5] Their live act's emphasis on personality and eclectic instrumentation, as noted in industry features, solidified their reputation for delivering immersive experiences that bridged underground scenes worldwide.[5]References
