Gameplay

[edit]

After examining a structure in Earth's orbit with her crew, scientist Kate Ward wakes alone on an alien planet. Players control Ward as she attempts to learn what happened and how to return. Scars Above is an action-adventure game played from a third-person perspective. Ward must battle her way through the hostile creatures on the alien planet using weapons and utilities that she crafts.[2] Ward can heal herself and recharge her devices using alien monoliths, but doing so requires her to backtrack and fight through enemies that she previously defeated. The monoliths are also checkpoints that she returns to when she dies.[3]

Gameplay

Combat

Scars Above features combat where players control Dr. Kate Ward, engaging enemies from an over-the-shoulder perspective using a centered on guns. These crafted weapons include the V.E.R.A. for shock , the Thermic Charger for fire-based incendiary attacks, the Cryo Launcher for ice grenades that can freeze foes, and the Corrosive Launcher functioning as an acid to dissolve armor. The guns interact through combo effects, such as freezing an enemy with the Cryo Launcher and then shattering it with electric or fire shots for increased , or using on water-submerged targets to chain shocks to multiple foes. Kate also has access to melee options via the Electric Cutter, a short blade effective against smaller, early-game enemies like mutated spiders but largely underutilized in later encounters due to its limited range and damage. Dodging is a core defensive mechanic, allowing rolls in any direction to evade attacks, though stamina limits rolls to roughly two before a cooldown, and hitbox inconsistencies can lead to unfair damage. plays a key role, with ammo scavenged from environmental pickups like plants and defeated enemies, while is restored using fiber injections crafted from collected fibers or replenished at checkpoints; overuse of gadgets like shields or decoys drains a shared battery that recharges slowly. Enemies consist of varied organic alien creatures, such as aggressive Jumpers that lunge quickly, armored Scorpiods requiring corrosive shots to expose weak points, and larger Exo-Alluvials with color-coded vulnerabilities like red bulbs for damage. These foes exhibit distinct behaviors, from swarming in groups to chaining combos that punish stationary players, and many have scannable weak points that reveal optimal strategies. Boss fights, against massive Lovecraftian entities like The Alpha, demand —such as dodging charge attacks or targeting self-healing phases—and through switching and use, often incorporating environmental hazards for added challenge. Combat progression occurs through upgrades at ancient monoliths, where knowledge points earned from scanning new enemies or collecting purple orbs are spent on skill trees for (enhancing weapons and gadgets) and (improving health and stamina). This unlocks new abilities like quick reloads, extra health packs, or advanced gadgets such as time-slowing bubbles, balancing escalating difficulty with risk-reward tactics where optional skirmishes yield resources but avoidance preserves ammo for tougher encounters. Diverse biomes introduce enemy variants adapted to their environments, such as water-based foes vulnerable to . The game draws influences with permadeath-like tension in higher difficulty modes like , where death resets progress to the last monolith without resource loss, but frequent checkpoints encourage experimentation without severe punishment. The game features three difficulty modes—Rookie (easiest, focused on story), Specialist (normal), and (hardest)—which can be adjusted at any time in the options menu.

Exploration and progression

In Scars Above, players navigate a mysterious alien through open-ended within largely linear yet interconnected biomes, such as lush forests, icy caverns, and toxic swamps, which encourage thorough searching for hidden paths and collectibles. These areas feature environmental hazards like poisonous gases, unstable prone to collapsing, and hazardous that require careful traversal to avoid damage. is often necessary to access previously unreachable sections, particularly when returning to ancient monoliths scattered throughout the biomes for healing, saving progress, and applying upgrades. Resource scavenging forms a core loop of advancement, where players collect materials like fiber from the environment to craft utilities such as shield recharges or gadgets that aid navigation. These resources are gathered amid dynamic hazards, including areas with electrified pools or frozen surfaces that can impede movement if not addressed. Puzzle-solving integrates elemental manipulation to progress, utilizing tools like the plasma rifle for electricity or frost grenades to alter the surroundings—for instance, electrifying water surfaces to create conductive bridges across gaps or melting ice barriers to reveal new routes. Other challenges involve aligning alien artifacts or redirecting energy flows, rewarding scientific problem-solving over brute force. Player progression relies on a dual skill tree system in and , unlocked by accumulating "" points earned from collecting glowing orbs hidden in the environment and scanning unique objects or phenomena during . These data logs not only provide lore entries but also incentivize comprehensive coverage to maximize upgrades, such as enhanced mobility or gadget efficiency, which further facilitate traversal. Monoliths serve as primary checkpoints, fully restoring health, ammunition, and ability cooldowns upon interaction, while also allowing skill tree investments. Upon death, players respawn at the last activated , necessitating replay of the intervening section and repopulation of hazards, which emphasizes strategic checkpoint usage during extended expeditions.

Development

Concept and design

Scars Above drew inspiration from Soulslike games, incorporating challenging combat that emphasizes learning enemy patterns through trial and error, as well as sci-fi horror titles like Alien, Dead Space, and Resident Evil for atmospheric tension and survival mechanics, with the goal of crafting a narrative-driven third-person shooter centered on a female lead. Additional influences included Star Trek for themes of exploration into the unknown, Forbidden Planet for ancient alien civilizations, and literature such as Alice in Wonderland to frame the protagonist's descent into a bizarre, hostile world as a metaphorical "rabbit hole." The core concept for protagonist Kate Ward positioned her as a non-warrior scientist and engineer, drawing from figures like Ellen Ripley and real-life astronaut Mae Jemison to highlight resourcefulness over brute force, which necessitated adaptive gameplay where players rely on intellect and environmental interactions rather than traditional combat prowess. Early prototypes at Mad Head Games focused on testing these mechanics, particularly elemental interactions grounded in real-world physics, chemistry, and biology—such as exploiting weaknesses with science-based weapons—to ensure the system felt methodical and tied to Kate's expertise. World-building conceptualized the alien planet as a ruined scarred by a long-extinct , featuring biomes like jungles, frozen tundras, and desolate ruins that reflect environmental decay and hidden horrors, evoking a Lovecraftian dread through biome-specific creatures adapted to their surroundings. Art lead Slobodan Danilović contributed to this vision by leveraging tools like Maya for modeling environments and assets, creating a cohesive sci-fi aesthetic that underscores the planet's mysterious and foreboding nature. Game director Ivan Zorkić steered the project's themes toward STEM representation, portraying Kate's journey as an exploration of 's dual role in and peril, while delving into psychological depth through her isolation on the , which amplifies feelings of and personal growth. Zorkić noted, " is something that will save humanity… Scars is a story about how both danger and a chance for lie in our desire for knowledge." The game was first announced in June 2021 during the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase as Mad Head Games' debut AA title, with the studio emphasizing intricate, linear storytelling over vast open-world scale to deliver a focused, compelling narrative experience.

Production

In November 2020, the studio was acquired by Saber Interactive, a subsidiary of Embracer Group, which supported its shift toward larger-scale projects. Mad Head Games, a Serbian video game studio founded in 2011 with offices in Belgrade and Novi Sad, Serbia, as well as Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, led the development of Scars Above as its first major third-person action-adventure title following earlier casual and hidden-object projects like Rite of Passage: The Perfect Show. The studio, which had evolved from casual game development to console-focused core titles over more than a decade, drawing on their technical, artistic, and creative expertise to handle in-house production from concept to completion. Prime Matter, a publishing label under (part of the ), provided essential support for multi-platform development, including resources for console ports, testing, and marketing, enabling the use of Unreal Engine 4 for the game's creation across PC, , , , and Xbox Series X/S. Development faced challenges in shifting to core game procedures, such as implementing new workflows for action-oriented mechanics and ensuring compatibility with last-generation consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One, which required optimization to maintain performance in the game's intricate alien environments. The timeline spanned prototyping and early work prior to a pre-alpha reveal in mid-2021, followed by full production phases through 2022, culminating in the February 2023 release. Behind-the-scenes efforts emphasized art production, including to craft the enigmatic alien biomes and ruins, and audio design to immerse players in the hostile world through environmental soundscapes and creature effects. integration featured actress as protagonist Dr. Kate Ward, whose scientist persona influenced narrative delivery without traditional , focusing instead on performance that aligned with the character's background. Post-concept refinements involved playtesting to balance combat and puzzle difficulty, adjusting trial-and-error elements to reduce frustration for broader audiences while preserving the challenging Souls-like feel, based on iterative feedback during production.
