STS-51-C was the fifteenth mission of NASA's Space Shuttle program and the first dedicated exclusively to the United States Department of Defense, launched on January 24, 1985, from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center aboard the orbiter Discovery.[1] The crew, commanded by Thomas K. Mattingly II with pilot Loren J. Shriver and mission specialists James F. Buchli, Gary E. Payton, and Ellison S. Onizuka, successfully deployed a classified military payload into geosynchronous orbit using an Inertial Upper Stage booster.[1][2] The three-day mission, which concluded with a landing at Kennedy Space Center on January 27 after 49 orbits, marked Discovery's third flight and demonstrated the Shuttle's capability for national security payloads despite challenging cold-weather launch conditions that later highlighted solid rocket booster vulnerabilities.[1][3] The payload, widely understood to be an electronic intelligence (ELINT) satellite such as Magnum, underscored the program's role in supporting strategic defense objectives through space-based reconnaissance.[2]
