Caleb Shomo began writing Beartooth songs while still a member of metalcore band Attack Attack!, to which he contributed a mix of keyboards, guitar and unclean vocals. The project was originally dubbed Noise, but was switched to Beartooth upon realization the name was already taken.[2] Shomo named the band after Bear Tooth Court, where original touring bassist Nick Reed grew up.[3] Shomo has stated that Beartooth was "supposed to be a mere distraction" while he was still a member of Attack Attack! and nothing beyond that, having no intentions to record or play live music; however, after his departure from Attack Attack!, he then focused on the project full-time – a move that would see Beartooth "surpass [Shomo's] wildest expectations."[4] After making the decision to make Beartooth a live act, Shomo recruited Reed, guitarist Taylor Lumley, and drummer Brandon Mullins for live performances.

Shomo has said that "Set Me on Fire" was the first Beartooth song ever written, followed by "I Have a Problem". These songs, as well as "Go Be the Voice" and "Pick Your Poison", were released online in December 2012.[2] After uploading a live music video for "I Have a Problem",[5] Beartooth announced a string of one-off dates that brought them right into fans living rooms, mostly in the Midwest, following the buzz surrounding the band's live performance in the "I Have a Problem" live video.[6] They played a date on the 2013 Vans Warped Tour[6] and were featured on the entire 2015 tour.[7]

On June 7, 2013, Shomo announced that Beartooth was now signed to Red Bull Records.[8] They released their debut EP Sick for free on their website on July 26, 2013, with Shomo singing, producing and playing all instruments on the record.[9] On August 17, 2013, the band released a video for "I Have a Problem", not to be confused with the earlier live version.[10] On December 18, 2013, the band were confirmed for the Warped Tour 2014.[11] On November 14, the band released a music video for the song "Go Be the Voice".[12]

Disgusting and lineup changes (2014–2015)

[edit]

On January 6, 2014, Kamron Bradbury, formerly of City Lights was announced as the new rhythm guitarist.[13] In early 2014, Reed left Beartooth and was replaced with Oshie Bichar of City Lights for a U.S. tour with Memphis May Fire throughout February and March.[14][15]

On April 29, 2014, Beartooth released a live music video for their new song, "Dead" set to appear on their forthcoming album, Disgusting.[16] On May 13, 2014, it was announced through Facebook the release date for the debut full-length album, Disgusting, as June 10, 2014, along with its track listing.[17] The first single for the album was released on the same day, titled "Beaten In Lips", along with its music video.[18] The album was available to stream online a day before its release.[19] As with Beartooth's debut EP, Shomo sang, produced, and played all instruments on Disgusting, except for "In Between", co-produced by John Feldmann.[20]

Beartooth participated in the Warped Tour 2014 throughout July to early August in order to promote the album.[21] In Europe they embarked on their first headlining tour while it was also announced that they would tour as support to Pierce the Veil and Sleeping With Sirens.[22][23] In August it was announced that they would also be headlining in their first ever North America tour throughout October with support acts Vanna, Sirens & Sailors, Sylar and Alive Like Me.[24] In February 2015 they toured the United Kingdom in support of Don Broco, We Are the In Crowd and Bury Tomorrow as part of that year's Kerrang! Tour.[25] In March Beartooth will tour across America in a series of 'DIY venues' and house shows some of which are secret, with support act Ghost Key, stating that it is a means of giving back to their fans and that they love the experience performing in a house, much like how the band first toured.[26] In May the band's single 'I Have a Problem' was a confirmed track for the then-upcoming game Guitar Hero Live.[27] From May and early June they toured the UK with support from The Color Morale and Dead Harts, also performing at the Slam Dunk and Download festivals.[28]

Aggressive and lineup changes (2015–2018)

[edit]

It was made known by Caleb Shomo that the band are working on new material via his Instagram in August, however a release date was not mentioned.[29] In August the band performed at Reading and Leeds, later supporting heavy metal band Slipknot along with Suicidal Tendencies in North America and Canada in October, and toured as a headline act in the UK in November.[30][31] On April Fools' Day the band released a "swingcore jazz" version of their song "Dead" as a prank to fans stating that it was brand new material, however they did state that the album's recording had finished in March and would be released later this year.[32] On April 4 the band announced that they had parted ways with their drummer Brandon Mullins on good terms and wished the best for him, they also assured fans that this would not interfere with upcoming tours with former Being as an Ocean's drummer Connor Dennis stepping-in in a touring capacity.[33] The band then toured as headline act from early March to mid May with a variety of support acts; Silent Planet, Ghost Key, Stray from the Path, My Ticket Home and Former on mixed dates and has been announced as one of the performers of Download Festival 2016.[34][35]

On April 16, 2016, it was leaked that Beartooth would release Aggressive on June 3.[36] The band later confirmed the album title and premiered its title track on Sirius XM's Octane channel that day.[37]

On December 8, Shomo stated on a Twitch stream in that he was "aiming for an album release by spring 2021" and that singles would "definitely" be released before then.[52] On December 18, the band released a remixed/remastered version of the band's second studio album Aggressive with added vocal layers and instrumentation.[53]

On March 19, 2021, the band surprise-released a new song called "Devastation".[54][55] A week later the band released "The Past Is Dead" and revealed the title of their fourth album to be Below.[56][57] It was also announced that the album would be released on June 25.[56][57] It was also announced that guitar tech Will Deely had become the band's new guitarist.[56] On April 23, "Hell of It" was released as the album's third single.[58][59] On May 21, one month before the album release, the band released the fourth single "Fed Up"[60] which frontman Caleb Shomo revealed "was written mid lockdown" in 2020 during, and about the COVID-19 lockdowns.[61] The album's fifth and final single, "Skin", was released on the same day as the album.[62][63] On March 18, 2022, the band released a deluxe edition of Below which featured two new songs titled "Fighting Back" and "Permanently Sealed" as well as an alternative version of the song "Skin" and several live tracks.[64]

The deluxe edition also featured a few live and remix tracks from the album.[76]

Musical style and influences

[edit]

Beartooth's style has been described as metalcore,[67][77][78][79][80] alternative metal,[81][82][83][84][85] hard rock,[70][79][86] melodic hardcore,[87][88][89] hardcore punk,[88][90] melodic metalcore,[91][92] post-hardcore,[93][94] and pop-punk.[77] Beartooth's style on both their EP Sick and their album Disgusting has been described as metalcore, but with more prominent punk rock influences than the style of Caleb Shomo's previous band Attack Attack! and without the electronic elements that Attack Attack! employed. Reviewers have also highlighted his emphasis on catchy choruses. Chad Childers of Loudwire commented that "the former Attack Attack! rocker [Shomo]... is delivering a mix of metalcore and old-school punk on his new band's Disgusting album",[95] while Rock Sound described Beartooth as "mix[ing] metalcore with nu metal and... massive choruses",[96] Kory Grow of Rolling Stone wrote that compared to Attack Attack!, the "smarter, leaner Beartooth have anteed up the aggression with poppy hooks and slinky hardcore riffing"[97] and Justin Mabee of HM Magazine said of Disgusting: "while much of the album tends to focus on two-steps, thrash and hardcore, Shomo came from a place where catchiness was in every song".[98] Shomo was also named one of Alternative Press' "15 best screamers in modern metalcore" in February 2014.[99] Another source called the band nu metal revival.[100]

Shomo himself commented on his intentions with Beartooth's style in an interview with Alternative Press in January 2013, when Sick had not been released yet, saying: "We just want to make fun, punk-rock, hardcore, wild music, play crazy shows and have a good time without any pressure from anything". When asked about the absence of electronic elements, which he has often worked with, from his new music, he stated: "I don't want any electronics in Beartooth. It is very hardcore and punk roots sounding. I have my electronic thing and I have this more hardcore thing, and I don't want those things to bleed into each other musically."[2] In an interview with Kerrang! Shomo stated that he does not intend to change the band's sound on their second album, and that it will be dark and intense like their debut.[31]

The band have cited influences including Ariana Grande,[101] AC/DC,[102] Every Time I Die, Underoath, Slipknot, Ice Cube, New Found Glory, Blink-182,[103] James Hetfield of Metallica,[104] Britney Spears, NSYNC, One Direction,[105] Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, Foo Fighters[106] and Disturbed.[107]

History

Formation and Sick (2012–2014)

, a from , founded Beartooth in 2012 as a solo bedroom project following his departure from the electronicore band Attack Attack!, where he had served as keyboardist, clean vocalist, and producer since 2007. Born on December 1, 1992, Shomo drew inspiration from his personal battles with issues, including depression and self-image struggles, using the project as a therapeutic outlet to document his emotions like a . Initially conceived without plans for a traditional band, Beartooth allowed Shomo to channel isolation and raw aggression into music, blending intensity with melodic elements reflective of his production background. On June 7, 2013, Shomo announced Beartooth's signing to Red Bull Records, marking a pivotal shift from a private endeavor to a professional venture. He handled all instrumentation, production, and vocals for the debut EP Sick, recorded in his home studio to capture unfiltered vulnerability. The EP, consisting of four tracks—"I Have a Problem (Sick Version)," "Go Be the Voice," "Pick Your Poison," and "Set Me On Fire"—was released for free digital download on July 26, 2013, via the label's platform, emphasizing accessibility for fans grappling with similar themes. Critics praised its aggressive metalcore sound laced with electronic influences, noting the EP's catchy riffs and anthemic choruses as a fresh hybrid that resonated with the genre's evolving landscape. The artwork featured a stark, minimalist design with a prominent bear tooth motif against a dark background, symbolizing the band's primal, introspective edge. As Sick gained traction online, Shomo assembled a live lineup to perform the material, transitioning the project toward a full band concept while retaining creative control. Early shows began in late , including support slots on a U.S. tour with , , and Defeater, where Beartooth's high-energy sets built a following through mosh-pit-inducing breakdowns and Shomo's visceral stage presence. The band's culminated in their first major festival appearance on the , playing the full run across multiple dates and stages, which exposed them to broader audiences and solidified their reputation in the hardcore scene. These performances highlighted the EP's live viability, bridging Shomo's solo vision with collaborative energy ahead of further developments.

Disgusting and early lineup changes (2014–2015)

In mid-2014, Beartooth assembled its first full touring lineup to support the promotion of their debut full-length album, marking an evolution from the solo production of frontman on the earlier Sick EP. The band's second release, Disgusting, arrived on June 10, 2014, through . Written, performed, produced, and mixed entirely by Shomo, the album delved into raw themes of self-loathing, depression, and desperation, continuing the introspective narrative from prior work. Track highlights included "In Between," a standout single that captured the album's emotional intensity with its anthemic chorus and aggressive breakdowns. The record debuted at No. 48 on the and reached No. 6 on the Top Hard Rock Albums chart, establishing commercial momentum for the band. Promotion for Disgusting began with Beartooth's participation in the full 2014 Vans Warped Tour, where they performed alongside acts like The Ghost Inside and , building grassroots buzz through high-energy sets. Later that year, the band launched a headline U.S. tour in October, supported by Vanna, Sirens & Sailors, , and Alive Like Me, showcasing tracks from the new album in intimate venues across the Midwest and East Coast. They also joined the co-headlining world tour of and as special guests, extending their reach through late 2014 dates in . Into 2015, Beartooth supported on select European and U.K. dates, further solidifying their international presence. The period saw the release of early music videos, such as "Beaten in Lips" in May 2014 and "In Between" in April 2015, which highlighted the band's chaotic live energy and contributed to visual promotion. Early lineup adjustments occurred amid this touring schedule, with the original live bassist Nick Reed having departed in 2014 and replaced by Oshie Bichar. Guitarist Taylor Lumley remained through this period. The era also saw significant fanbase expansion, driven by the viral success of singles like "," which amassed over one million U.S. sales and earned RIAA certification, amplified through active engagement and streaming platforms.

Aggressive and lineup instability (2015–2018)

Following the success of their debut album, Beartooth experienced ongoing lineup instability as the band expanded its touring commitments, with Connor Denis transitioning from a touring role in 2016 to a permanent member in 2018 to provide consistency amid frequent changes. Brandon Mullins departed in 2016 following the recording of Aggressive, citing the physical and mental toll of extensive touring. Further turnover came in April 2018 when guitarist Taylor Lumley left the band for personal reasons, leading to temporary reliance on session and touring musicians for live performances until the addition of Zach Huston as lead guitarist in June 2018. During this period, frontman took an expanded role in production for the band's second studio album, Aggressive, which he wrote, performed on all instruments, and co-produced, marking a shift toward heavier, riff-driven soundscapes compared to their debut. Released on June 3, 2016, via , the album debuted at No. 25 on the and topped the Alternative Albums chart, with standout tracks like "Hated" showcasing aggressive breakdowns and Shomo's raw vocal delivery. The record's creation was influenced by Shomo's personal burnout from the pressures of success after Disgusting, as he later described the closing track "" as capturing that exhaustion. Beartooth's touring schedule intensified from 2016 to 2018, solidifying their prominence in the scene through headlining slots on the Vans Warped Tour in both 2016 and 2018, as well as festival appearances like 2017 alongside Korn and High Elevation Festival 2017 with Korn and . The band expanded internationally, making their first Australian run in June 2017 supporting with shows in , , , and , while also venturing to for performances. This era included the band's initial arena-scale shows, such as at Chicago Open Air in 2016 with Slipknot, highlighting their growing draw despite internal challenges. Shomo's experiences with burnout prompted him to seek therapy, which began shaping his songwriting toward themes of recovery and aggression during live sets and promotional efforts. Promotion for Aggressive continued with music videos and singles, including a live video for "King of Anything" released in June 2017 from their deluxe edition reissue, emphasizing the band's high-energy performances. The period saw increased media attention, with Alternative Press premiering the title track "Aggressive" in April 2016 and featuring the band in Warped Tour coverage, while Kerrang! highlighted their rising status through tour reviews and interviews on their heavier evolution. Rumors of a potential label shift circulated in 2017 amid the deluxe release, but Beartooth remained with Red Bull Records. These developments underscored the band's resilience amid flux, as Shomo balanced creative control with the demands of a burgeoning career.

Disease and creative evolution (2018–2019)

In 2018, Beartooth achieved a degree of lineup stability following years of turnover, with Caleb Shomo maintaining his role as the band's primary creative force alongside drummer Connor Denis on a full-time basis and the addition of guitarist Zach Huston. The band's third studio album, Disease, was recorded with Shomo collaborating for the first time with outside producer Nick Raskulinecz at his Rock Falcon Studio in Nashville, Tennessee, marking a departure from Shomo's previous solo production approach. Released on September 28, 2018, through Red Bull Records—a label the band had previously partnered with—the album debuted at No. 40 on the Billboard 200 chart. Disease emphasized vulnerability and introspective songwriting, incorporating melodic structures that pivoted from the band's earlier aggression toward more accessible rock elements. The tracklist featured songs like "Infection," which explored themes of internal conflict, alongside "Disease," "Fire," and "You Never Know." Lyrically, represented a thematic shift toward mental illness, , and personal recovery, drawing directly from Shomo's experiences with depression, anxiety, and his ongoing journey, which he described as an "outworking of and ." Shomo has noted that the album served as a means to destigmatize struggles, with tracks confronting the "demons" of emotional turmoil in a raw, confessional manner. Critics praised the record's emotional depth, highlighting its whirlwind of highs and lows as a maturation in Shomo's expression, blending intense screams with soaring melodies to convey vulnerability without sacrificing energy. To promote Disease, Beartooth embarked on a fall 2018 U.S. headline tour, followed by the "Disease Tour, Part II" in spring 2019 with support from Of Mice & Men, , and Dead American. The band also performed at major festivals, including a hometown headline slot at Sonic Temple Art & Music Festival in , in May 2019, where Shomo reflected on the band's evolution in a documentary. These shows underscored the album's live appeal, with fans connecting to its themes of resilience amid the high-energy performances. In 2019, Beartooth released a deluxe edition of Disease on October 25, expanding the original tracklist with new songs such as "Used and Abused," which was issued as a single, along with "Clever," "Messed Up," and "Takeover." Complementing this, the band surprise-dropped The Blackbird Session, an acoustic EP featuring reimagined versions of tracks like "Disease" and "Clever," offering stripped-down interpretations that further highlighted the album's melodic and emotional core. This output solidified Disease as a pivotal release in the band's creative evolution, earning acclaim for its honest pivot toward melody and introspection while maintaining Beartooth's signature intensity.

Below amid pandemic disruptions (2020–2021)

The severely disrupted Beartooth's operations in 2020, forcing the cancellation of planned headline tours and live performances as lockdowns took hold worldwide. Having just completed the Diseased & Disguised co-headlining tour with in early 2020, the band faced abrupt halts to their momentum, with frontman shifting to remote songwriting from his home studio in . This isolation period, which Shomo described as a "time capsule" of 2020's emotional toll, fueled the creation of their fourth studio , Below, emphasizing raw, introspective themes of depression and personal struggle amid global uncertainty. Lineup adjustments compounded the challenges, as longtime guitarist Kamron Bradbury departed the band on May 24, 2020, citing personal reasons after six years of contributions to their evolving sound. Bradbury's exit left the group with Caleb Shomo (vocals, production), Zach Huston (lead guitar), Will Deely (rhythm guitar, joining circa 2021), Oshie Bichar (bass), and Connor Denis (drums), a core that carried forward into the album's development. To adapt to restrictions, Beartooth pivoted to virtual engagements, including the "Journey Below" livestream event on June 28, 2021, and an online album release party on July 1, 2021, featuring live performances, fan interactions, and behind-the-scenes content to maintain connection with supporters. Below was recorded with a stripped-down, aggressive production style reflective of the era's constraints, self-produced by Shomo and released on June 25, 2021, via . The album debuted at No. 30 on the , marking their highest chart entry to date, driven by singles like "Devastation," which captured the visceral frustration of isolation and battles. Shomo openly discussed how the exacerbated his struggles with depression, using the record as a therapeutic outlet and advocating for awareness in interviews, emphasizing themes of that resonated with fans facing similar isolation. As restrictions eased, Beartooth resumed limited touring in late 2021, starting with the Below Tour on in , supported by and , focusing on smaller venues and festivals to rebuild safely. They performed at drive-in concerts earlier in the , such as the September 2020 event at Menominee Nation Arena in , but transitioned to traditional setups by fall, including a high-energy set at the festival on November 12, 2021, signaling a cautious return to live energy post-disruption.

The Surface and ongoing developments (2022–present)

In 2022, Beartooth solidified its core touring lineup, consisting of founder on lead vocals, rhythm guitarist Will Deely, lead guitarist Zach Huston, drummer , and bassist , marking a period of stability following previous changes. This configuration, with Huston joining in and Deely in , allowed the band to focus on new material without the disruptions of earlier lineup flux. The band's fifth studio album, The Surface, was recorded primarily by Shomo with production assistance from Jordan Fish, formerly of , emphasizing a polished sound incorporating pop elements alongside aggression. Released on October 13, 2023, via , the album explores themes of emerging from personal darkness, personal growth, and pursuing happiness, as Shomo described it as "a story of change." Standout tracks include "Riptide," which addresses self-doubt, and "I Was Alive," a radio hit reflecting resilience. The Surface debuted at number 42 on the , selling 17,000 album-equivalent units in its first week, and topped the Top Hard Rock Albums chart. A deluxe edition followed on September 20, 2024, adding the new single "ATTN.," which critiques modern distractions. Post-release, Beartooth embarked on extensive touring from 2023 to 2025, including a co-headlining spring 2023 U.S. run with and a 2024 North American headline tour supported by , , and Sleep Theory. The band headlined a summer 2024 U.S. tour with Currents, Boundaries, and Nevertel, followed by a European leg, and performed at festivals such as Rock am Ring in . In 2025, they joined the multi-headliner Summer of Loud tour alongside , , and , with additional dates supporting and appearances at When We Were Young and Inkcarceration festivals. A January 2025 hometown show in , at The Schottenstein Center celebrated the band's roots, later released as the live album I Was A… LIVE on July 11, 2025, capturing a full set without major pandemic-era interruptions. By late 2024, Shomo revealed in interviews that he had completed an entire seventh album's worth of material, teasing collaborations with for its production and hinting at a potential release. Shomo's side projects, including production for other artists, have been limited amid Beartooth commitments. As of 2025, the band remains active, with Shomo continuing to advocate for awareness through lyrics and discussions, emphasizing destigmatization and in tracks like "Might Love Myself" from The Surface. Commercially, Beartooth achieved over one billion global streams by 2025, with The Surface generating 91,000 equivalent units; vinyl reissues, including ultra-clear variants and the 2025 live album on double LP, underscored sustained fan demand.

The band's sound features Caleb Shomo's distinctive vocal style, blending harsh screamed verses with melodic clean choruses, which creates a dynamic contrast central to their aggressive yet anthemic delivery. Heavy breakdowns, characterized by chugging guitar riffs and pounding rhythms, form a core component, often punctuated by rapid tempo shifts and occasional synth layers that add electronic textures reminiscent of influences from Shomo's prior work. Instrumentation emphasizes guitar-driven heaviness, with palm-muted riffs providing groove, blast beats on drums for intensity, and bass lines reinforcing the low-end drive, while later works introduce subtler acoustic elements for emotional depth. Over their career, Beartooth's sound has evolved from the raw, visceral aggression of their early releases—Sick (2013) and Disgusting (2014)—which prioritized unrelenting energy and minimal melodic respite, to a more introspective and hybrid approach in subsequent albums. By Disease (2018) and Below (2021), the band incorporated greater melodicism, balancing heavy elements with soaring hooks and varied pacing to explore emotional vulnerability. This progression reflects Shomo's personal growth, transitioning from chaotic intensity to structured catharsis while maintaining metalcore foundations. Production techniques have also advanced, beginning with Shomo's solo handling of all instruments, recording, mixing, and mastering on Sick and Disgusting, which imparted a gritty, DIY aesthetic. Later albums retained Shomo's central role but embraced collaborative input from band members, enhancing polish and integration of electronics. The 2023 album The Surface marks a notable shift toward accessibility, with pop-leaning production that amplifies hooks and incorporates guest vocals—such as country artist HARDY on "The Better Me"—to broaden appeal without diluting heaviness. Beartooth's hybrid style draws comparisons to contemporaries like .
