Key Information
History
[edit]Bandera News Philippines started its FM operations in Puerto Princesa, Palawan and it is owned by former RMN Davao and Brigada Palawan radio announcer and current station manager of Bandera News FM, Elgin Robert Damasco.[1] After several months, the company expanded to different cities and towns across the Philippines.[4]
On November 27, 2023, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has issued a cease-and-desist order against radio stations under Fairwaves Broadcasting Network, whose franchise lapsed in 2020. Among the stations were in Bukidnon, Villanueva, Misamis Oriental and Iligan, the latter which was never licensed by the NTC.[5] Damasco explained that the Bandera stations under Fairwaves had their ownership transferred to Palawan Broadcasting Corporation after the latter's franchise was granted in 2021.[6]

Founding and Initial Operations
Bandera News Philippines operates as a regional broadcast entity primarily through its Radyo Bandera FM network, with initial activities centered in Puerto Princesa, Palawan. The company's headquarters are situated in the Macasaet Business Complex on Roxas Street, serving as the base for its early radio endeavors.[1] Initial operations involved launching FM radio stations dedicated to news and public affairs programming, starting with coverage in Palawan to deliver timely local information and community engagement content. The flagship station in Puerto Princesa, broadcasting on 89.5 MHz, formed the core of these beginnings, emphasizing independent reporting for regional audiences.[1][3] The network's early model relied on affiliations and acquisitions of existing frequencies to establish a presence, focusing on formats that prioritize factual news dissemination over entertainment, distinguishing it from broader commercial radio outlets in the Philippines.[1]Expansion and Network Growth
Bandera News Philippines grew its radio operations from a single station in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, to a broader network under the Radyo Bandera brand, with Palawan Broadcasting Corporation licensing most outlets.[1] Expansion included additional frequencies within Palawan, such as in El Nido at 88.1 FM.[1] The network extended to Mindanao with stations in Malaybalay and Valencia, Bukidnon, at 88.1 FM and 102.5 FM, respectively, alongside coverage in General Santos City.[1] Further development reached the Visayas, highlighted by the 2021 launch of a station in Iloilo City, positioned as the region's first dedicated news FM outlet.[4] Acquisitions facilitated entry into Luzon, including a 2017 reformatting of a Bulacan frequency into Radyo Bandera News FM. This phased growth established a presence across major island groups, emphasizing news and current affairs programming.[5]Ownership Transitions and Recent Milestones
Bandera News Philippines was established in 2015 in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, initially launching FM radio operations under the ownership of Elgin Robert Damasco, a former announcer from RMN Davao and Brigada Palawan.[6] The company has maintained stable ownership centered on Damasco since its founding, with no documented transfers or shifts in primary control reported in available records.[6] A key early milestone was the simultaneous rollout of Bandera News TV as a regional broadcast network in Palawan, complementing its radio stations and focusing on news and current affairs in standard definition format.[6] Following initial success with its flagship 88.7 FM station in Palawan, the network expanded operations to Mindanao in August 2019, marking its entry into southern Philippines with additional FM affiliates.[7] Subsequent growth included affiliations in Visayas and Luzon, such as the 2022 debut of a news-focused FM station in Iloilo, positioning it as the first dedicated news-FM outlet in that area.[4] In November 2023, the National Telecommunications Commission ordered the shutdown of several Bandera stations in Mindanao and Visayas due to expired congressional franchises, highlighting regulatory vulnerabilities for regional broadcasters, though operations persisted amid appeals and affiliations.[6] Recent achievements encompass station-level recognitions, including the General Santos affiliate earning its seventh Most Outstanding Chamber of Commerce Award (MOCA) in 2025, securing back-to-back wins for 2024 and 2025 as Mindanao's top chamber-affiliated media entity.[8] This underscores the network's growing footprint, now spanning over a dozen FM stations and TV relay points across multiple islands via licensees like Palawan Broadcasting Corporation.[6]Corporate Structure and Ownership
Founders and Key Personnel
Bandera News Philippines was founded by Elgin Robert Damasco, a former radio announcer from RMN Davao and Brigada Palawan, who established the company's initial FM operations in Puerto Princesa, Palawan.[6] Damasco owns the company and has led its expansion into a regional radio network with stations across Mindanao, Visayas, and parts of Luzon, often through licensees like Palawan Broadcasting Corporation.[6] As president, Damasco oversees the overall operations, including the branding under Radyo Bandera and affiliations that extend the network's reach.[6] Key local personnel include station managers such as Eljohn Castano at Radyo Bandera Sweet FM in Bacolod, who handles day-to-day broadcasting in specific regions.[9] In areas like Iloilo, figures such as Dr. Ramel Uy have served as CEO for station-specific leadership, reflecting the network's model of centralized ownership with regional management.[4]Current Ownership and Governance
Bandera News Philippines operates as the primary entity managing the Radyo Bandera radio network and affiliated broadcast services, with its headquarters located at the Macasaet Business Complex in Puerto Princesa, Palawan.[1] Most of its FM stations are licensed to Palawan Broadcasting Corporation, a Puerto Princesa-based media network that holds the broadcast franchises and facilitates operations across regions including Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.[1] This licensing arrangement shifted following the 2020 expiration of franchises previously held by Fairwaves Broadcasting Network, which prompted National Telecommunications Commission cease-and-desist orders against several affiliated stations in 2023, though core operations persisted under the updated structure.[6] Specific details on the ultimate ownership of Bandera News Philippines remain undisclosed in public records, with no verifiable ties to major conglomerates or political families despite occasional unsubstantiated claims in social media discussions. Governance appears decentralized, emphasizing regional station managers for day-to-day oversight, as evidenced by appointments like Rey Espeja Umalay in Iloilo, but lacks transparent reporting on a central board or executive leadership.[4] The network complies with Philippine broadcast regulations under the National Telecommunications Commission, prioritizing local content delivery without noted corporate governance controversies as of October 2025.[10]Broadcast Operations
