History

[edit]

Elecom was founded in May 1986 in Osaka, Japan by Junji Hada (葉田順治, Hada Junji).[2] The company opened a facility in Miyakojima-ku and manufactured office furniture such as computer desks.[3] In November of the same year, they opened an office in Itabashi in Tokyo. The following November, offices were opened in Nagoya and Fukuoka.[3] They introduced an oval mouse in 1988, different than the common rectangular mouse that was popular at that time, and the oval mouse became the global standard.[2] A Tokyo distribution center was opened in December 1988.[3]

Their first numeric keypad was launched in September 1989. The following September, an office was opened in Sapporo, and their Sendai office was expanded to include a distribution center in March 1991. Elecom Sales (エレコム販売株式会社, Erekomu Hanbai Kabushikigaisha) was spun-off in July 1991, with offices in Minamikawachi. Elecom Computer Products was established in the United States in September 1992.[3]

Seiko Epson sued Elecom and manufacturer Ester Industries in September 2000, claiming that Elecom's manufacturing and sales of ink cartridges compatible with Epson printers infringed on their patent.[4] The suit was dismissed in March 2002 when the Japan Patent Office withdrew Seiko Epson's patent, stating it did not meet the requirement for originality.[n 1][4]

Elecom won the top spot in the categories for mobile phone audio accessory, mobile phone battery charger, smartphone case, smartphone screen protector, and tablet accessory every year from 2017 to 2020 in the annual BCN Awards[5][6][7][8] (given out by the POS marketing information company BCN since 2000). Due to COVID-19, demand for webcams and microphones tripled or quadrupled due to the increase in people working from home.[2] At the same time, due to the increase in popularity of notebook computers, the demand for its computer stands has sharply decreased, causing them to quickly change the company's product focus.[2]

A charity golf tournament was hosted by Elecom at the Yomiuri Country Club in on June 17, 2020, to raise money for healthcare workers due to the impact of COVID-19. It was the first professional golf tournament since the spread of the virus.[9]

In June 2020, Daiwa Securities reported they had reduced their holdings in Elecom from 5.20 percent to 3.45 percent.[10]

History

Inception and early innovations (1986–2000)

Elecom Co., Ltd. was founded in May 1986 in Osaka, Japan, by Junji Hada as an office automation (OA) furniture manufacturer targeting home appliance retailers, with an initial capital of ¥3 million, focusing on the production and sales of personal computer desks.[13][7] In November of the same year, the company opened its Tokyo Sales Office in Itabashi-ku to expand its domestic reach.[13] By March 1987, Elecom began diversifying into OA accessories, such as floppy disk cases, marking an early shift from furniture toward computer-related products.[13] This expansion continued with the establishment of Nagoya and Fukuoka Sales Offices in November 1987, followed by the Sapporo Sales Office in September 1990, enabling broader distribution across Japan.[13] A pivotal innovation came in October 1988 when Elecom launched its first input device: an oval-shaped computer mouse, which departed from the era's dominant rectangular designs and prioritized ergonomic comfort for users.[13][14] This mouse quickly gained traction and established itself as a global standard for ergonomic mouse design, influencing subsequent developments in the industry by emphasizing user-friendly shapes that reduced hand strain during prolonged use.[14] Building on this success, the company introduced complementary peripherals, such as a ten-key keyboard in September 1989 and floppy disk drives in September 1990, further solidifying its position in the burgeoning personal computing market.[13] During the 1990s, Elecom transitioned from basic peripherals to a wider array of PC accessories, including the launch of its LAN products under the LANEED brand in April 1994 and the stylish Lunarisse series in June 1994, which earned Good Design Awards for six products that September.[13] This period of growth culminated in international expansion with the establishment of its U.S. subsidiary, ELECOM COMPUTER PRODUCT INC., in September 1992, aimed at penetrating the North American market and distributing its innovative peripherals abroad.[13] These developments laid the groundwork for Elecom's evolution into a key player in consumer electronics, driven by a focus on practical, design-oriented solutions for everyday computing needs.[13]

Growth, acquisitions, and recent developments (2001–present)

In November 2001, Elecom was listed on the JASDAQ Securities Exchange, marking a key step in its growth.[13] This was followed in March 2005 by a listing on the Tokyo Stock Exchange First Section.[13] In 2002, Elecom secured a significant legal victory in a patent dispute with Seiko Epson over ink cartridge technology for printers. The Japan Patent Office invalidated Epson's patent for lacking originality, leading to the dismissal of Epson's infringement lawsuit against Elecom and affirming Elecom's rights to produce compatible peripherals.[15] Elecom pursued strategic growth through key acquisitions to broaden its product portfolio and technological capabilities. In November 2004, the company acquired Logitec Corporation, a specialist in wireless LAN products, via a stock purchase, integrating it as a wholly owned subsidiary to strengthen its networking offerings.[16] In July 2011, Elecom established Hagiwara Solutions Co., Ltd. as a subsidiary to focus on storage solutions and industrial memory products.[13] Further expanding into broadcasting and communications, Elecom acquired a 96% stake in DX Antenna Co., Ltd. in March 2017 from Funai Electric Co., Ltd., later increasing it to full ownership, which enhanced its lineup of antennas and receiving devices.[17] In May 2014, Elecom acquired Japan Data Systems Co., Ltd. as a subsidiary, bolstering its embedded systems capabilities.[13] In May 2021, it acquired Force Media Inc., and in 2023, added groxi Inc. in June and the Tescom Electric Group in July, further diversifying its portfolio in data solutions, software, and electrical components.[13] In April 2022, Elecom transitioned to the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market.[13] By the late 2010s, Elecom had established a leading position in the Japanese market for mobile accessories, holding top share in categories such as smartphone cases, battery chargers, and audio products.[18] The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 accelerated demand for remote work tools, with Elecom experiencing a surge in sales for webcams and microphones—shipments of telework-related products increased significantly from February onward, prompting expanded production to meet the needs of hybrid work environments.[19] This shift also influenced product focus, moving toward home office essentials like adjustable computer stands to support ergonomic setups. Through 2025, Elecom continued diversifying its digital equipment offerings, including a planned full acquisition of Nippon Antenna Co., Ltd. via share exchange effective November 25, 2025, to integrate advanced broadcasting technologies and bolster B2B capabilities.[20]

Products and innovations

Computer peripherals

Elecom's computer peripherals encompass a broad range of PC hardware, including mice, keyboards, USB flash drives, cables, and hubs, all engineered with an emphasis on ergonomic design and seamless connectivity. The company's mice lineup features ergonomic models such as the EX-G series, which adopt an oval shape inspired by the original 1988 design that departed from traditional rectangular forms to promote natural hand positioning and reduce strain during prolonged use.[21] Keyboards include specialized gaming variants like the TK-VK720A, incorporating rapid trigger mechanisms for responsive input and silent operation to minimize noise.[22] USB flash drives, cables, and hubs, such as the compact 4-port USB 3.0 models supporting 5 Gbps transfer rates, facilitate efficient data management and device expansion without requiring external power sources.[23] A cornerstone of Elecom's innovation in this category is the evolution of its mice from the pioneering 1988 oval model to contemporary wireless and high-precision variants. Early designs prioritized comfort by mimicking the hand's natural curve, setting a precedent for ergonomic peripherals that have influenced industry standards. Modern iterations, including the IST PRO trackball mouse for precise control in CAD applications and the EX-G Pro for gaming, incorporate multi-connection options like Bluetooth and wired USB, alongside customizable buttons for enhanced functionality.[24][25] In gaming devices, features such as SPARK LE-UWB connectivity enable low-latency wireless performance, available in the VM800 series across various hand sizes and finishes.[26] Recent innovations include the Huge Plus trackball mouse, released in November 2025, featuring a 52 mm ball, 10 programmable buttons, and multi-device Bluetooth connectivity for enhanced precision and ergonomics.[27] These advancements reflect Elecom's "Human Interface" philosophy, focusing on usability to bridge users and technology.[28] Elecom's peripherals have garnered significant recognition for their design and functionality, particularly through the Good Design Award, which the company has won over 150 times as of 2024, including for products in this category and continuing annually into 2025.[29][30] These awards highlight innovations in comfort, such as the ergonomic contours in mice and the durable key mechanisms in keyboards rated for up to 10 million keystrokes.[31] Hubs and cables, often compact and bus-powered, exemplify practical enhancements like LED indicators for status monitoring and compatibility with high-speed USB standards, underscoring Elecom's commitment to reliable, user-centric hardware.[32]

Mobile accessories and other products

Elecom offers a range of mobile accessories designed to enhance portability and protection for smartphones and tablets, including cases, touch pens, protective films, chargers, and mobile batteries. These products emphasize durability and compatibility with modern devices, such as USB-C charging solutions and anti-scratch films that maintain touch sensitivity. For instance, their smartphone cases feature shock-absorbent materials and lanyard options for everyday carry, while tablet stands provide adjustable angles for hands-free viewing and charging integration.[6] In the mobile audio category, Elecom produces headphones and earbuds tailored for on-the-go use, incorporating noise reduction and wireless Bluetooth connectivity. Models like the LBT-TWS16 series offer compact, lightweight designs with AAC codec support for clear audio during calls or media playback, and built-in microphones for seamless integration with smartphones. These accessories prioritize comfort and battery life, with some variants featuring IP-rated water resistance for active lifestyles.[33][34] Beyond core mobile items, Elecom diversifies into supplementary products such as webcams, microphones, and digital equipment. Their webcams, like the UCAM-CF20FB model, deliver Full HD 1080p resolution with facial recognition for secure logins and integrated microphones for video conferencing, compatible with Windows systems. Microphones include stand-type flexible arm options with mute functions, enhancing audio clarity in professional settings. For digital equipment, camera bags and carrying cases provide padded protection for cameras and laptops, often with multiple compartments for accessories.[35][36][37] A notable example in this category is the Off Toco series of sling bags for cameras, which feature water-repellent polyester material and a multi-functional 2-style design allowing use as either a sling or shoulder bag. These bags provide large capacity without bulkiness, fitting a camera with lenses, a laptop up to 14 inches, and additional accessories, making them suitable for commuting or travel backup. User reviews and tests highlight their durability and high value for money due to the versatile features at an affordable price point.[38][39] Elecom also extends to office furniture and ergonomic supports, including computer stands, monitor risers made from sustainable paper materials, and storage units like desks and partitions. These items focus on space efficiency and ventilation to prevent overheating, with foldable designs for easy setup in home or professional environments.[6][40][41] The COVID-19 pandemic prompted a notable shift in Elecom's market adaptations, with increased remote working driving demand for webcams, microphones, and audio accessories to support virtual meetings and home offices. This surge aligned with broader trends in protective solutions and charging products, as consumers sought reliable ecosystems for hybrid lifestyles, leading Elecom to expand its low-carbon "THINK ECOLOGY" lineup for these categories.[6]
