Eric Curran is an American professional racing driver known for his two championship titles in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Prototype class, which he won in 2016 and 2018. He competed extensively in sports car racing series, achieving notable success in prototype machinery with teams such as Action Express Racing and Whelen Engineering Racing, and has over 30 professional race victories to his credit along with multiple pole positions. Curran began his racing career in 1994 competing in SCCA club events in the Northeast United States, initially with a modified Volvo in Improved Touring and American Sedan classes, where he secured multiple championships including the 1999 SCCA A Sedan National Championship. He progressed to professional competition, racing for manufacturers such as Nissan and Acura in the early 2000s before joining Whelen Engineering in 2007, with whom he earned significant results in series including the Rolex Sports Car Series and IMSA prototypes. His IMSA tenure included standout performances such as a second-place overall finish in the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2018 and the 2019 Michelin Endurance Cup title. In addition to his driving career, Curran founded West Coast Exotic Cars, a dealership specializing in the buying, selling, and consignment of high-end exotic, luxury, and muscle cars, leveraging his extensive motorsport network and experience. Following his departure from full-time IMSA Prototype racing in 2019, he has continued occasional competition in historic and other series while focusing on his business ventures.

Early life

Early life and background

Eric Curran was born on June 8, 1975, in Sarasota, Florida. He is American by nationality. Little additional information is publicly available about his early life or background prior to his involvement in motorsports.

Racing career

Early racing and SCCA

Eric Curran began his racing career in 1994, competing in the Sports Car Club of America's Improved Touring B (ITB) class aboard a 1971 Volvo 142. Between 1994 and 1999, he recorded 21 race wins and four championships in the ITB class while racing in the Northeast region. In 1999, Curran transitioned to the American Sedan class, driving a Chevrolet Camaro. He won four races in the class that season and captured the SCCA National Championship Runoffs title in American Sedan. This victory earned him recognition as the 1999 SCCA A Sedan National Champion. These accomplishments in SCCA club racing established Curran's credentials as a competitive amateur driver and facilitated his progression to professional sports car series.

Rolex Sports Car Series

Eric Curran began his involvement in the Rolex Sports Car Series in 2007 upon joining the Whelen Engineering motorsports program, marking the start of a long-term partnership with team owner Sonny Whelen and Marsh Racing. He primarily competed in the GT class, often sharing driving duties with Boris Said in the No. 31 Chevrolet Corvette. During his time in the series, Curran recorded 3 wins and 4 poles, contributing to consistent performances across multiple seasons before the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series concluded in 2013. A highlight came in the final race of the 2013 season at Lime Rock Park, where Curran and substitute co-driver Lawson Aschenbach captured the GT class victory after Aschenbach secured pole position, marking Marsh Racing's first GT win of the year in the team's final event with the Corvette platform. His accomplishments in the Rolex Sports Car Series established a strong foundation for his continued success in IMSA's subsequent unified championships.

United SportsCar and WeatherTech Championship

Eric Curran competed in the United SportsCar Championship (later renamed the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship following the series' rebranding) for Whelen Engineering Racing, an Action Express Racing program. He drove the No. 31 prototype entry, initially the Whelen Engineering Corvette Daytona Prototype (DP) and subsequently the Cadillac DPi-V.R from 2017 onward. His primary co-drivers during this period were Dane Cameron in the earlier seasons and Felipe Nasr in later campaigns. Curran earned his first series victory at the 2015 Chevrolet SportsCar Classic in Detroit, partnering with Dane Cameron to win in the Whelen Engineering / Team Fox Corvette DP. In the 24 Hours of Daytona, he recorded second overall and second in class finishes in both 2018 and 2019 aboard the No. 31 Cadillac DPi-V.R. He also achieved multiple top-10 finishes in the Rolex 24 at Daytona between 2015 and 2019. Curran holds an FIA Gold racing licence.

Championships and major results

Eric Curran is a two-time champion in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship's Prototype class, securing the driver title in 2016 and 2018. In 2016, he won the championship co-driving for Action Express Racing in the Coyote Corvette DP, earning 314 points across the season. His co-driver for that title was Dane Cameron, with the pair contributing to the team's success in the endurance-focused series. In 2018, Curran claimed his second Prototype championship with Whelen Engineering Racing in the Cadillac DPi, accumulating 277 points. Curran recorded a total of eight wins in the Prototype class of the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship across his career, along with numerous podium finishes that underscored his consistency in the series' top category. Notable supporting results include a third-place finish in the Prototype standings in 2015 with Action Express Racing (304 points) and a runner-up position in 2017 with Whelen Engineering Racing (291 points). Outside of sports car racing, Curran made brief forays into stock car competition, competing in two races in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (now Xfinity Series) in 2012, where he achieved a best finish of 34th at Watkins Glen International and ended the season 85th in points. This represented a minor diversion from his primary focus on endurance and sports car racing.

Eric Curran appeared as himself in two episodes of the television series NASCAR on ESPN in 2012. These appearances were tied to his participation in the NASCAR Nationwide Series that year, specifically during coverage of the NAPA Auto Parts 200 and the Zippo 200 at the Glen. These represent his only verified television credits, with no other film, television, acting, producing, or stunt roles documented on his IMDb profile.
