Jeremy Shada (/ˈʃdə/; born January 21, 1997[1]) is an American actor, musician and singer. He is best known for his work as the voice of Finn the Human from the American animated television franchise Adventure Time and Lance in Voltron: Legendary Defender.[2] He is also known for his performances in the sketch-comedy series Incredible Crew, the 2020 Netflix musical series Julie and the Phantoms, and DreamWorks Dragons: The Nine Realms.

Key Information

Life and career

[edit]

Shada began acting at the age of seven, soon after moving to Los Angeles with his family. He was inspired to act by his older brother, actor Zack Shada.[3]

Shada initially appeared in commercials. Later on, he began auditioning for voice acting and theatrical performances, taking advice from a voice-over agent. His first live-action theatrical role was as Young Kurt Diamond in No Rules.[4] He has since appeared in additional live-action and voice acting roles, such as playing young Charlie Pace in childhood flashbacks on Lost.[5]

In 2009, Jeremy Shada's agent approached him with the idea of auditioning for the role of Finn in Adventure Time; his brother Zack had been the original voice of Finn (originally named Penn) in the pilot episode of Adventure Time three years prior. After viewing the pilot on YouTube, Shada matched his voice with the voice of his brother in auditions with Adventure Time creator Pendleton Ward and the show's producers, which earned him the role.[6]

In 2012, Shada joined the cast of Nick Cannon's sketch-comedy series, Incredible Crew.[7] In June 2012, to promote Incredible Crew's 2013 premiere, Cartoon Network released a music rap video titled "Running Errands with My Mom" which features Shada performing and rapping the lyrics. The video has since generated over one million views.[8]

Due to his acting career, Shada was homeschooled.[9]

Musical career

[edit]

Along with his brother Zack, Shada is a member of the pop-punk band Make Out Monday, which was formed in 2014. The band performed at the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con.[10]

Personal life

[edit]

On March 8, 2020, Shada married Carolynn Rowland, a company dancer with Los Angeles Ballet.[11][12] Their son was born in August 2024.[13][14]

Jeremy Shada (born Jaden Jeremy Shada; January 21, 1997) is an American actor, voice actor, and musician best known for voicing the adventurous protagonist Finn the Human in the Cartoon Network animated series Adventure Time from 2010 to 2018.[1][2] Born in Boise, Idaho, Shada moved to Los Angeles with his family at the age of five, where he was raised; he began his acting career at age seven, inspired by his older brothers Josh and Zack, who are also actors.[2][3][4] Shada's early roles included appearances in television shows such as Lost as young Charlie Pace and Ghost Whisperer as Liam Fletcher, alongside voice work in animated projects like Batman: The Brave and the Bold as young Robin.[4] His breakthrough came with Adventure Time, where he voiced Finn across 229 episodes, contributing to the show's critical acclaim and cultural impact as a coming-of-age adventure blending humor, fantasy, and emotional depth.[2] Following this, Shada expanded his portfolio with prominent roles including Reggie Peters in the Netflix musical series Julie and the Phantoms (2020), Lance McClain in Voltron: Legendary Defender (2016–2018), and various characters in films like ParaNorman (2012) and video games such as Gears 5 (2019).[1][2] In addition to acting, Shada pursued music, joining the punk-pop band Make Out Monday in 2014 as lead vocalist and guitarist, releasing albums like Kicking Cars (2014) and touring extensively before the band's hiatus; he has since developed a solo career, releasing Neon Dreams in 2024.[2][5] Homeschooled and graduating high school in 2013, he resides in the Los Angeles area and maintains an active presence on social media, engaging fans with his positive outlook and creative endeavors.[2]

Early life and career

Early life

Jeremy Shada was born Jaden Jeremy Shada on January 21, 1997, in Boise, Idaho.[2][1] He is the youngest son of Linda and Dean Shada, with two older brothers, Josh and Zack, both of whom pursued careers in acting and music.[6][7] Growing up in Boise, Shada developed early interests in acting and music, inspired primarily by his brother Zack's involvement in the entertainment industry.[2][8] In 2003, at the age of six, Shada's family relocated to Los Angeles to support his brothers' professional aspirations.[2] In the Los Angeles area, Shada was homeschooled during his early education to allow flexibility for his emerging pursuits.[9][10]

Acting career

Shada began his acting career at the age of six, appearing in a commercial for Little Tikes toys, and soon expanded to numerous other national commercials.[1] He transitioned to small television roles, including guest spots on shows such as Judging Amy and Monk.[1] His first live-action theatrical role came in 2005 as Young Kurt Diamond in the film No Rules.[11] Shada's breakthrough arrived in 2010 at age 12 with the role of Finn the Human in the animated series Adventure Time, which he voiced through its conclusion in 2018.[11] The recording process typically involved short sessions, often conducted in groups to capture natural dialogue flow under the direction of supervising producer Kent Osborne, contrasting with the lengthy nine-month animation timeline per episode.[12] As Shada aged through puberty, Finn's voice deepened naturally, mirroring the character's growth and contributing to the show's appeal across generations.[13] The series, a cultural phenomenon, significantly elevated Shada's profile, opening doors to broader voice and live-action opportunities.[14] Beyond Adventure Time, Shada continued voice acting in animated series such as Penn Zero in Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero (2015–2017) and Tom Kullersen in Dragons: The Nine Realms (2021–2023).[15] He has also lent his voice to video games, including reprising Finn in MultiVersus (2022).[15] In live-action, notable roles include the web series Mr. Student Body President (2016), where he played the lead character, and Reggie Peters in the Netflix musical series Julie and the Phantoms (2020).[11] Post-2020 projects include voicing Finn in the spin-off Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake (2023) and Gingerbrave in Cookie Run: Kingdom (2021–present), alongside a live-action appearance in The Paloni Show! Halloween Special! (2022).[15][11] Shada's performances earned recognition, including a 2018 Behind the Voice Actors Award win for People's Choice Voice of the Year and a nomination for Best Vocal Ensemble in a Television Series for Adventure Time.[16] For Julie and the Phantoms, he shared in the cast's 2021 MTV Movie + TV Award for Best Musical Moment ("Edge of Great").[16]

Musical career

Shada's interest in music began early, influenced by his musical family, including his brothers Josh and Zack, who are also performers. Around 2010, he started sharing cover songs on YouTube, gaining initial exposure through platforms that allowed him to showcase his vocal talents alongside his burgeoning acting career.[17] In 2014, Shada co-formed the pop-punk band Make Out Monday with his brother Zack Shada, along with John Spicer, Seth Renken, and Logan Charles. The band debuted with the single "Hope Less Romantics" and quickly built a following, releasing their first EP, Kicking Cars, later that year. They followed with the EP Expectations in 2014 and the full-length album Meet Me Halfway in 2016, blending pop-punk energy with folk-rock elements. Make Out Monday toured extensively from 2015 to 2017, performing across the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom, and signed with SharpTone Records in 2018. The band remains active, releasing new material as recently as October 2025 with the single "Back to the Feeling."[18][19][20] Shada transitioned to a solo career in the late 2010s, releasing his debut EP Mad Love in 2021, which featured introspective tracks exploring relationships. His first full-length album, Vintage, arrived on October 1, 2021, comprising 12 songs that pay homage to modern romance through a mix of upbeat pop and nostalgic vibes; standout tracks include "Back in Fashion," "Pretty Little Lies," and the duet "This Feels Right" with his wife, Carolynn Shada. The album marked a personal evolution, inspired by his marriage and a shift toward independent artistry. Shada continued with the 2024 album Neon Dreams and the 2025 EP Between Dreams, further establishing his solo sound rooted in indie pop.[21][22][23] Throughout his music endeavors, Shada has collaborated on soundtracks and live projects, including vocal features on various releases. He has produced music videos for solo tracks like "Dancing With Strangers" and "If Looks Could Kill," often directing or co-producing to emphasize visual storytelling. Tours have included the Vintage Mini Tour in 2022 and ongoing performances supporting his releases, blending high-energy sets with acoustic intimacy. His acting role as Finn the Human on Adventure Time influenced his music by incorporating original songs into episodes, such as "Time Passes Like a Cloud," which honed his songwriting skills and bridged his dual careers.[24][25]

Personal life

Relationships and family

Shada married Carolynn Rowland, a former corps de ballet dancer with the Los Angeles Ballet, on March 8, 2020.[11][26] The couple welcomed their first child, a son named Caden Stone Shada, on August 13, 2024.[27] Shada and Rowland frequently share glimpses of their family life on social media, highlighting joyful moments with their son and their efforts to maintain date nights amid parenting and professional commitments. As of August 2025, they shared updates about their son's first birthday.[28]

Interests and philanthropy

Shada has expressed a strong interest in gaming as a personal hobby, particularly enjoying video games like Super Smash Bros. and board games during his downtime.[9] In philanthropy, Shada has supported causes related to youth mental health and medical research. In June 2023, he participated in an Adventure Time pop-up shop event in Wynwood, Miami, partnering with Be Strong—a national charity focused on improving youth mental, emotional, and relational wellness through peer-to-peer programs—where 20% of proceeds from cookie sales were donated to the charity.[29] In October 2023, he attended the Buoniconti Fund's 38th Annual Great Sports Legends Dinner with his wife, an event raising funds and awareness for spinal cord injury research and paralysis cures.[30] Beyond these efforts, Shada maintains an active social media presence on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, where he frequently interacts with fans through posts about daily life, convention appearances, and community events, fostering connections with the Adventure Time fanbase.[28] In interviews, he has highlighted the importance of balancing his professional commitments with personal time, crediting his versatile career in acting and music for allowing flexibility in pursuing non-work activities.[3]

Filmography

Film

Shada made his feature film debut in the 2005 independent drama No Rules, portraying young Kurt Diamond, the son of a police officer who infiltrates an underground MMA fighting ring to solve a murder. In the same year, he provided the voice for the Alien Boy in the Disney animated comedy Chicken Little, a minor character among the extraterrestrial family that adds to the film's chaotic alien invasion plot twist.[31] Shada contributed to the ADR loop group for the 2006 direct-to-video animated sequel Bambi II, supporting the vocal ensemble in the story of young Bambi searching for his missing mother and learning courage. He lent additional voices to the ensemble cast of the 2009 animated adventure Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, enhancing the quirky inhabitants of Swallow Falls during the food-precipitating catastrophe. In 2010, Shada voiced additional characters in the animated sci-fi film Quantum Quest: A Cassini Space Odyssey, a educational tale following a young probe's journey through the solar system inspired by NASA's Cassini mission. Shada provided additional voices for the 2011 coming-of-age dramedy That's What I Am, set in 1963, where a teacher navigates schoolyard bullying and personal challenges through the eyes of his students. In the 2012 stop-motion animated horror-comedy ParaNorman, Shada voiced the pug dog, a loyal pet companion to the protagonist who sees ghosts and must stop a witch's curse on his town. Shada voiced Howard Nixon in the 2014 independent comedy Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie, playing a nerdy ally to the titular retro gaming critic battling an alien invasion via console wars. He appeared uncredited as himself in the 2015 mockumentary Uncle Kent 2, a satirical follow-up where a filmmaker desperately pitches ideas at a comic convention amid creative burnout. Shada voiced the lead role of Cody Maverick, a young penguin surfer seeking his father, in the 2017 direct-to-video animated sequel Surf's Up 2: WaveMania, which follows a celebrity surf team competing in a magical tournament.[32]

Television

Shada's television career spans both live-action guest roles and prominent voice acting in animated series, beginning with small parts in the mid-2000s and evolving into lead roles by the 2010s. His early appearances included portraying young Charlie Pace in the episode "Fire + Water" of the ABC series Lost in 2005. He followed this with a guest spot as Liam Fletcher in the episode "The Prophet" of Ghost Whisperer in 2008. In 2009, Shada provided the voice of Young Robin across 5 episodes of Batman: The Brave and the Bold. During this period, he made guest appearances in live-action shows, including as the First Baseman in the episode "The Situation" of Parenthood in 2010. He voiced Ross Caliban in the episode "The Heist" of Spider-Man in 2018. Shada continued his voice work in the 2020s with the recurring role of Reggie Peters, the laid-back bassist in the fictional band Sunset Curve, in all nine episodes of the Netflix musical comedy series Julie and the Phantoms in 2020. That same year, he reprised Finn the Human in the four-part miniseries Adventure Time: Distant Lands, contributing to episodes released between 2020 and 2021. From 2021 to 2023, Shada led the voice cast as the dragon-riding teen Tom Kullersen in the DreamWorks animated series Dragons: The Nine Realms, appearing in all 52 episodes across eight seasons. Video games

Jeremy Shada began his video game voice acting career early, providing the voice for young Paxton Fettel in the horror shooter F.E.A.R. 3, released in 2011 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.[33] Shada is best known in gaming for voicing Finn the Human, the adventurous protagonist from the Adventure Time animated series, across numerous tie-in titles developed primarily by Little Planet and WayForward. These games allowed him to extend his performance from the television show into interactive adventures set in the Land of Ooo, often featuring side-scrolling action, dungeon exploration, and RPG elements. His portrayals captured Finn's youthful enthusiasm, bravery, and occasional naivety, contributing to the games' appeal to fans of the series.[15] The following table summarizes Shada's key video game voice credits, focusing on titles, characters, release years, and primary platforms: In addition to these, Shada has contributed voices to various characters within the expanding Cookie Run mobile game franchise, such as Villager Cookie and Peanut Butter Choco Cookie in Cookie Run: Kingdom. Albums

Jeremy Shada's musical output in full-length albums includes his work as former lead vocalist and guitarist of the pop-punk band Make Out Monday from 2014 to around 2021, and his solo career as a pop artist. These releases showcase his evolution from band-driven rock to introspective pop, often exploring themes of romance, heartbreak, and self-discovery. The 12-track album, self-produced with collaborators, draws from 1980s aesthetics while addressing modern romance, with Shada handling lead vocals, guitar, and keyboards on several cuts. Critics noted its nostalgic charm and Shada's versatile voice, with American Songwriter describing it as a "tribute to love and romance in the modern age." The 48-track compilation captures the show's whimsical score. Similarly, on Julie and the Phantoms: Season 1 (Music from the Netflix Original Series), released September 11, 2020, by Republic Records, Shada sings as Reggie on hits including "Edge of Great" and "Bright," blending rock and pop in ensemble performances that propelled the soundtrack to No. 2 on the Billboard Soundtracks chart. These albums underscore Shada's vocal role in animated and live-action musical narratives.[50]

As a founding and former member of the pop-punk band Make Out Monday, formed in 2014 with his brother Zack Shada and others, Jeremy Shada contributed vocals to several early singles that gained traction in the alternative rock scene. These tracks were primarily from the band's debut EP, Kicking Cars, released on November 16, 2014, and focused on youthful romance and energy without significant chart success but building a dedicated fanbase through online streaming.[54][55] Key Make Out Monday singles include:
  • Hope Less Romantics (July 21, 2014): Debut single from Kicking Cars; energetic pop-punk track on hopeless romance, marking the band's entry with Shada's prominent vocals.[55]
  • Sirens (2014): Follow-up single from the same EP; explores themes of allure and danger in relationships.[54]
  • Twixter (2014): Promotional single from an expanded edition of Kicking Cars; reflects on young adulthood limbo, released to sustain band momentum.[54]
These band efforts preceded Shada's full shift to solo work, with no new Make Out Monday singles featuring Shada after the mid-2010s. The band remains active without him as of 2025.[54]

Other appearances

Shada contributed vocals to several original songs on the soundtrack for the Netflix series Julie and the Phantoms, where he portrayed the character Reggie Peters. Notable tracks include "Edge of Great," performed with Madison Reyes, Charlie Gillespie, and Owen Patrick Joyner, which highlights the band's ethereal rock sound, and "Finally Free," a collaborative piece emphasizing themes of liberation and performance. He also featured on "Now or Never" alongside Gillespie and Joyner, capturing the series' high-energy musical sequences. In the animated series Adventure Time, Shada voiced Finn the Human and sang multiple songs integral to the show's episodes and albums. Examples include "All Gummed Up," a whimsical track from the series' musical specials, and "Food Chain" with Hynden Walch, which humorously explores ecological themes through catchy lyrics.[56] Other contributions encompass "Balloon Music," a lighthearted balloon-themed ditty, and "Call to the Universe," featured on the 2019 Adventure Time compilation album.[57] Beyond soundtracks, Shada has participated in select collaborations, such as the Gilligan Moss remix of "All Gummed Up / Dropdown Rainbow" from Adventure Time, blending original vocals with electronic production. Shada has released covers and YouTube originals, including an acoustic rendition of "Singing in the Rain," paying homage to the classic Gene Kelly standard with a modern twist.[58] A notable YouTube original is "Home Is Where My Horse Is," an upbeat folk-inspired song created as a tribute to his character Reggie, first shared in 2020 and revisited in fan discussions through 2025.[59] As of November 2025, Shada continues to engage with soundtrack material, with renewed interest in Julie and the Phantoms tracks like "Edge of Great" highlighted in online content.
